Went there for the first time today for a late lunch. Met a friend whom I hadn't seen in about 5 years. Got there early, and sat at the bar. Couple of thoughts.....definitely a place where mostly locals go, crowded, Red Sox nation / Patriots / Bruins / Celtics, etc., the food looked fantastic. Got into a conversation w a couple of locals, and one steered me to the scallop dinner. Time to order, and we switched to a high table in the bar area. I had a bowl of shrimp bisque and the scallops (fried) dinner. Both were delicious, the scallops were definitely not frozen...very fresh. Friend had a turkey club w onion rings. He enjoyed both. The place has a great vibe.....a little bit of a sports atmosphere and great seafood. The menu has some great choices, both for tars as well as landlubbers. Two minor negatives: (1) parking lot is smallish and has more than its fair share of ruts, and (2) me being from New Yawk, I thought the locals pronounced scallops wrong. Where do I even start!!!!!! I have never had fish and chips like this in all my years of living in Massachusetts (26 to be exact). I finally find the best damn food of my life and I now live 6 hours away!!! Of course!!! I'll tell you what, I'd be willing to drive weekly to Herbie's for that fish and chip dinner!!! My friend ordered the scallops and OMG, absolutely delicious!!!! The food was amazingly fresh. This is not a fancy establishment, people. It's a bar/pub. Herbie's was recommended by a friend of mine who lived in Worcester. A place she described as a local bar served with foods that are reasonably cheap deep fried seafoods. I was craving for fried scallops for awhile so I went finally on a Thursday afternoon at 4 pm. Walked in and it was packed with ppl at the bar drinking and having big platters of fried seafoods!!! Was pretty excited to get a takeaway fried scallops roll and fries. While I waited, I did three rounds of keno, waited by the entrance at the bar. Took probably 15 mins to get the takeout which it wasn't too too bad. Got home and saw the fried scallops and fries.... Was very disappointed at the size of the scallops. From what I saw at my friend's pic and Yelp pics, the fried scallops were way bigger!! The batter was a little under cooked both scallops and fries!!! They both need to deep fry second time to get the golden color and crispiness right. Coleslaw was watery!!!! The roll is just a typical hotdog bun. But seriously fried scallops was a little soggy! Probably need to pat it dry then batter it!!!! Deep fry twice!!! This is a C- takeout!!! Would not go back to try anymore food!! Stopped by this past Saturday for their Prime Rib special. Price was on par with what others charge or better. This isn't my first time ordering it. The only drawback was the amount of fat this time around. I'll still try them out in the future in hopes it was a one time issue. read more

This place is a hidden gem! I was looking for a local spot for a seafood plate when I saw the great reviews for Herbie's and I have to say I agree! You can't beat the great prices and it tastes just like the seafood you get at the beach. It came with plenty of fried large to jumbo shrimp (7-8) fries and coleslaw. Here in Worcester, MA I've found the real deal, the closest thing to my hometown's many neighborhood bar/restaurant. Here some speciality include Baked Stuffed Haddock w/seafood stuffing & Hollandaise Sauce for $17.95, a Fisherman's Platter (baked or fried) for $23.95 or Grilled Salmon (Plain, Honey Mustard or Dill Sauce) w/pilaf & veg for $18.95. Been around for over 50 years, this unpretentious and casual restaurant serves up some mighty good fixin's and a strong drink. SATURDAYS THEY HAVE A GREAT LOOKING PRIME RIB TOO. They have a daily specials menu and I happened to be here on a Thursday when it was the only night they offer fried Chicken, one of my southern favorites. It was lightly breaded, pipin' hot and not at all greasy. French fries and cole slaw came with it although you could get mashed potatoes and vegs too. Coleslaw was spiced just right with a hint of sugar without being drowned in mayonnaise. I give this restaurant 4 stars for 2 reasons, the fried scallop and haddock plate I had was perfection (nicely breaded and not greasy...huge, fresh scallops!) and the atmosphere made me feel like I was in a scene from Good Will Hunting. If you are looking for a chill bar, hometown casual feel, check out Herbie's. It was packed because the locals love it and we all know that's always a good sign. Seating is a combination high tops on the bar side and low tops in the opposite dining area. The chairs that are wooden but surprisingly comfortable. The circular bar has ample seating. My husband ordered the crispy chicken wrap with sweet potato fries and a Caesar salad. I had coleslaw and rice pilaf with my meal; both were good. Sorry, I ate my food to fast to take a pic. Don't judge, I get hungry on road trips.‍ If you're in it for the ambience, this may not be your cup of tea. Let me start off with the positives. The iced water and lemon wedge was superb. The onion rings also looked genuinely homemade. We did have to ask for a side of tartar sauce, no big deal. But my only question is, what in the Sysco is going on here ? If you don't know, that's a food distributor who makes mostly pre fabricated food. The burger, French fries, haddock and all other fried foods besides the onion rings came from a bag. I guarantee that fryer is working overtime by how many bags of food it sees. Not to mention, the service was slooooow. They don't seem to have enough staff, not the fault of the waitress. She was very nice! I would come here for a beer and that's it. They were also out of chicken kabobs relatively early in the night. Mainly because it's the only thing that's not fried. Just hop on down to the nearest store if it's only 6 pm and dinner service is for another 3 hours. The prices are low and that's because it all comes from a freshly ripped plastic bag. Moved away from the East Coast. Had to get a fix of seafood. Went to Herbie's and was not disappointed. Great scallops and Haddock dinner. Lobster Saute was also great. I was at Herbie's maybe 6 times (my daughter and wife designated to go after first time). Food is fried but still tasty and ok. They have SUPER SMALL kitchen and looks like they don't care about investing in bigger. If someone want to see how it looks saloons in 16-18 cowboy Midwest century then it's way to go. Dark place even in day hours. Most patrons over 70 years old and they not complaining about nothing (of course not, because not using YELP app :-D ). I'm assuming what's most hold them here is cheap decent for Keno game and SUPER cheap drinks up to 1pm. Noticed stuff about dirty man toilet room about 6 month ago and no handle on door (you must to push with elbow because don't want to touch dirty door) but after today my last visit here no one even move the finger to make any, even small changes. This place is what I'd call a hidden gem. I would never have given it a second thought if my uncle hadn't told me about their prime rib special, the best in worcester (his words) and at an inexpensive price at that. So being the prime rib fanatic that I am, I had to make a trip! Though the outside may not look very welcoming... plain old building with no windows and that's frequent by the older crowd. The food is very tasty! I didn't get to try the prime rib yet, since they only serve that on saturdays but I've tried quite a few other dishes and I haven't been disappointed! All at dirt cheap prices too! Which makes me wonder how they even make money... Their clam chowder is particularly delicious, very generous with the clams, big pieces in every bite! LOVE. What a hidden gem this place! I used my trusty Yelp App to steer me here and glad it did. Went for business lunch on a Wednesday. The place was PACKED and had to wait. What is this place? It looks like a dive bar. 60% of the customers were retired, 20% drunks with no teeth, and the other working class. This place isn't for the faint of heart. It's a Worcester institution where you'll find all types of people, a wide selection of beverages, and a large, varied menu. The first half of my group arrived. We ordered food and drinks and then watched the place fill up before our eyes as we waited for the remainder of our party. Our drinks arrived immediately, our food wasn't too far behind. The food is higher quality than one might expect at first glance of this place. I've heard that for years, which is why we gave it a shot in the first place. The second half of my group arrived and asked the waitress how long it might take to get a burger because we had time restrictions. She said, "You don't come to Herbie's when you're in a rush." I thought it was a very honest, helpful answer. It was obvious that it was busy and she didn't humor the idea of trying to get us out in time. I appreciated that. The best thing about this place is the price. Really cheap and affordable. Small menu, but the specialty menu is larger. I was hesitant on ordering the salmon but figured I'd give it a shot. It was pretty plain and bland, nothing crazy. The carrots were okay pretty plan. The best was the sweet potato fries. After we ordered when she came back to put the napkins on the table I asked for a side order of sweet potato fries and she seemed a bit annoyed. Wasn't very friendly.
