I really didn't want to leave this review for Herb because of great reviews and feedbacks from my friends and Subaru enthusiasts. As a Subaru Ambassador myself, I have recommended people to this dealership and now I am not so sure anymore. I took my 2015 Subaru WRX in for diagnosis of an AC issue. It is a 4 year Subaru that has less than 23K miles on it. Granted, a car that is 4 years old with this little miles shouldn't have any AC issues. I already got the refrigerant refilled a year prior at Herb and this year, the AC completely stopped working. I understand that I no longer have warranty at this point and I contacted Subaru of America and they told me they would work with me. After diagnosis, Herb told me that there is a leak in the evaporator (a small radiator inside the dashboard that provides cold air for AC). They quoted me $1800 including labor and parts to fix the issue. Now, my Subaru is modded but they are all engine modifications. None of the mods would explain why the AC broke down in this car. The service rep made it sound like engine modifications caused the AC to die and it needs much more than whatever it is to fix the issue. I was extremely upset. SoA later contacted me and said they would give me $750 towards the repair if I get my car fixed at Herb. Now that is still over $1000 out of pocket. At this point, I decided to pick up my car and fix it somewhere else. When I went to pickup my car, the service rep ignored me. I waited over 30 minutes for them to pull up my car. After I got my car back, one of the plugs under the dash was unplugged (unprofessional). After this incident, the service rep followed up with me via text and email asking for a good review and feedbacks. I responded with exactly happened and it has been over 1 month, I have yet to hear back from the dealership. It seems to me that they only care when you give them good reviews and feedbacks. They don't care about you if you don't do work there or provide them with constructive criticisms. I did take this car to a local mechanic and we fixed this issue with a little over $400, less than 4 times the amount Herb asked for ($200 for parts and $200 for labor). The core was replaced under 3 hours. Now I am not saying Herb doesn't do a good job, but quoting $1800 for a job that costs $400 shows me how greedy this dealership is. I was going to purchase a Subaru Ascent here, but now I will take my business elsewhere. I do not want to give my money to a dealership that does not care about me or my car. read more

Took my car in for the second time for a recall inspection and an oil change. I was hesitant to take it back to this shop because the last time I had an oil change and my tires rotated several months before, one of the mechanics overtorqued and the nuts on my wheels and when I was changing a tire the treads on the bolts were damaged and I had to pay to get several replaced. Due to the recalls I had to take it to a Subaru dealership so went in with the request my tires not be removed. When speaking with Micheal Goodman who did my intake paperwork he immediately wanted to remedy the situation offering to potentially cover the claim of the replaced bolts and going as far as covering the cost of the oil change that day. I was endured the previous mistake wouldn't happen again and that Subaru is a family and trust is what they want for their business. I definitely felt better and I was grateful for the compensatory oil change. Will definitely be headed back for more service in the future. read more

Love this place, great service and comfortable waiting area. Love that they give free donuts in the morning and complimentary car wash and vacuum when you take your car for service. They have a waiting area where you can watch tv or sit at a desk and plug in your laptop. They have snack machines too and free hot chocolate and coffee. My service advisor for the last few years has been Rodney and he is the BEST! There is a service center closer to my house but I travel further to come to this one as they are more professional. read more

Though this is a 5 star review, I'd like to explain that it is only a 5 star review because of the salesman Matt Phelan! With that being said..... I came into this location on Saturday the 29th to potentially purchase a Crosstrek. When I walked into the show room, when I tell you nobody even budged I'm serious. No one greeted me and came up to me to offer me help, does nobody want to sell a car????? All The salesmen on the floor of the show room just looked at us and turn their heads. So I went ahead and looked at the car that I was interested in all by myself. I was told that if I want it to look at the car I had to walk all the way to the Audi dealer lot to view it by the receptionist. Mind you, that's not a short walk. So I looked at the car and then left that day and didn't even bother to go back in the dealership. Instead I spent the day purchasing another car from another dealership with my boyfriend. Then the following Monday the 1st, I came back because I was interested in purchasing the car even though I had one on hold at another dealership nextdoor. I was willing to come back and give it a shot. The lovely gentleman from Koons Ford, who helped my boyfriend buy a car that Saturday recommended I go see Debbie Holt at Subaru so that's what I did. When I arrived on Monday to see Debbie the receptionist explained to me that Debbie wouldn't be there until 1 PM and I was on a time crunch. Matt Phelan walked up to my friend and I and offered to help us, and let me just say once again nobody else came up to us and asked us if we needed help. Matt was the only person that walked up to us and asked us if we were looking to buy a car. Wtf??? Do I look poor to this dealership or something??? The salesmen all carried a snobby attitude and looked very bored so they should've been welcoming and ready to make a sale. Considering I was the only potential client in the show room. Anyways come to find out the information about Debbie's schedule was wrong, she ended up showing up about an hour and a half after I was told she wouldn't be in until 1pm which was like 10:30am (kind of a bummer) but I'm glad Matt came to help us because I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! He is amazing at his job let me tell you that! He answered all my questions about the car I was interested in buying just off the top of his head. He didn't second-guess himself not once. He was even honest and told me the things that I wouldn't like about the car. He offered to show me the car in a bunch of different colors and package features just to make it work with my budget. Not only that but he was super friendly and relatable to my friend and I. We had a few good laughs. He exceeded my expectations and made my car buying experience amazing. I can definitely say without a doubt that if Matt had not helped me I would have NOT bought a car from this dealership. I do have to say the gentleman in the finance area who helped me sign for the car ( please forgive me as I forget his name ) was very friendly as well and relatable. He was a gem and he's off enjoying his vacation now! Lol. Also I would like to mention as I was sitting down at Matt's desk discussing the car buying options, there seemed to be a managers meeting in the office right next-door... they were having a very heated conversation, they neglected to close the door or have any regard that there were clients in the show room. Even as they came out of their meeting and saw that we were sitting there they had no regard to apologize or say hello as they walked bye. What's with the attitudes people???? After chatting with a sales person I decided not to buy my car from here. The Sales Representative Al Goldenberg was very disrespectful. I inquired about a vehicle and told him I had a trade. He gave me a price on a vehicle and I proceeded to negotiate the price. When I asked that he take my negotiated price to the General Manager, he then gave me a new price higher than the MSRP and told me he was was going home for the weekend and for me to have a great week. Then days later another sales person continued to call me. How do you have the audacity to quote me a higher price then the MSRP then tell me to have a nice weekend. That was malicious, wreckless and disrespectful -- and then call me and ask me if I am still interested in buying a car. Absolutely Not! read more

SUMMARY: Dealership made a mistake which was followed by a mishandling of the situation. Upon hearing of the situation, the dealership contacted me personally and made things right. The team did a fantastic job of meeting my (admittedly high) expectations. DETAILS (THE ORIGINAL STORY): Rod Andrade quoted us on a 2017 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Touring. We had come to him with a TrueCar certificate, which he said he could match. We confirmed the specifications multiple times. We then had a miscommunication where he claimed he made a mistake on the quotation. His manager Michael Roy said they wouldn't honor the quotation. The car was specified down to trim level and options MULTIPLE TIMES via email AND on the phone, yet they only pulled out after they got my credit card information? Super shady. Listen, I get it. Mistakes happen. But not in the way these guys played it out, and not without even trying to make amends for it. In fact, these guys came back and threw a quotation that was $4,000 HIGHER than the original quote. Compared to other dealers in the area, I know this quote is about $3,000 higher than it should be. UPDATE: Herb Gordon Subaru went above and beyond to make things right, and I wish to commend them for doing so. Ed Sarecky, the GM, called me personally to apologize and to make it right. Rod called me personally to apologize as well. This alone went a long way in making things right. These were sincere apologies and their desire to rectify the situation led me to accept their offer to purchase a vehicle from them. We worked with Ed, Rod, and Bryan to order the exact vehicle we wanted at the original quoted price. The team worked diligently to ensure we got our vehicle earlier than expected (before Christmas as opposed to every other dealership which quoted mid-January), that the process was smooth, and that we got the best deal possible. I would like to call out the following people for their exceptional service, transparency in the process, their sincerity, and just because they deserve the praise: Ed Sarecky, General Manager Rod Andrade, Sales Bryan Liddiard, Finance Would I buy a car from them again? Best experience at a dealership I've ever had! I was in the market looking for a bigger car than the one I currently had due to the needs of having an infant and requiring more safety features (I had a very barebones vehicle) and cargo space. I had set up a test drive time with Muhammed. He listened to my needs and immediately got me set up. He provided me with a tentative quote afterwards, no pushiness or passive aggression. I reached out by email afterwards asking if we could negotiate on pricing over email before I went in again to finalize the offer, and he was very receptive and quick to respond. Jim, one of the financing guys was also really friendly and explained all the packages they offered. All in all, took a week of email contact, and about 2 hours of time at the dealership afterwards to settle everything. They also introduced us to all the functions of the new car before we drove off the lot. Really stress-free and enjoyable. read more

I did all my research (including test drives) at other car dealerships before going to Herb Gordon, so I can't speak for their ability to help you "find the car that's right for you", but they were a pleasure to work with. After deciding on a car, I found that they had the exact model, color, and option package that I wanted. I calculated a fair price for the 2015 Forester that I planned on buying, and made an offer lower than that (as any negotiation would begin). I was contacted the next day by Michael Roy (General Sales Manager) with his response. Rather than pinning me to that one vehicle, Michael sent me two options. One was slightly higher than the price I offered, but the other (which met all my option needs) was actually a few hundred LOWER than my offer (go figure). The differences between the cars were not readily obvious in the general descriptions of the individual cars, so I asked Michael to send me the window stickers for each so I could do a side-by-side direct comparison without having to drive a half hour to the dealership. He sent me the .PDFs first thing in the morning (the difference was things like heated side mirrors, bumper cover, cargo net - nothing major). After having already test driven the car at another dealership, I knew this was what I wanted. I stopped by that day after making a last minute appointment. I was greeted at the front and passed on to a salesman named Rich Cross. He too was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The car I wanted was already pulled up to the front by the time I arrived (30 minutes after making the appointment), and we took it for a test drive. The price I was able to negotiate was $1100 lower than the best price I could find for the exact same car with the same options at any other dealership in the DC metro area. I can't remember the finance guy's name (he was newer), but he too was very helpful. I understand it's their job to sell the extended this and that for the car, but I didn't feel overly pressured and was able to turn down the options without stressing. He did his job well and didn't try to convince me that I was making a mistake by not taking the extended warranties. I appreciated that big-time. Haven't gone for my first car service yet and probably won't for a while, but when I do, I'm sure it'll go smoothly. read more

I bought my Subaru here in 2011 from John, and absolutely loved working with him. The process was straightforward, and he really works to give you the best price possible (believe me, I brought my stingy Asian father here. If we didn't get the best price, he would raise hell). Since then, I've returned here on the regular to get my car serviced. They always complete the work in a timely, efficient manner, and pricing is fair. Best part? The service guys give my car a wash whenver I get an oil change. The free coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, and wifi in the waiting room don't hurt either. I don't really know anyone that says "Gosh, I love going to my car dealer..." Except for me. My dad is thinking about buying another Subie (he currently drives an 04 Forrester also purchased here), and when the time comes to buy, you can be sure we will come back to Herb Gordon. I moved cross country, from SF to DC, and my 2011 Impreza went with me. The cross country trip put enough miles on the odo that it was time for a 30k service, the first of the major ones. I had just put on new tires, and have grazed a curb or 3 in the last four years, so I figured it was time for an alignment check too. I don't know the DC area well enough yet to have a relationship with an independent shop, so I looked around and found that, among the various review website, Herb Gordon had the highest ratings. I made a service appointment online about 2 weeks in advance and requested a loner car for the day of the service. I showed up today at about 7:15am for a 8am appointment (traffic lighter than expected). They open at 7:30 and immediately had 4-5 people greeting the cars that had queued up. I had the good fortune to be helped by Greg, who was impeccably professional. I was out the door in a loner Forester in about 5 minutes, after confirming the services I wanted done. About 5 hours later, I got a call from the dealer informing me that my car was ready to be picked up. Imagine that--they actually called me! I picked the car up around 6:30 (the cashier is available until 7:30), and was back on my way out again in another 10 minutes, with a detailed receipt in hand of the work done, as well as the inspection, and a receipt that came in right at the estimate. So: no hassle, fast service, no gimmicks or added services I didn't want, free loaner vehicle, a call as soon as the car was ready. What more could I ask for, really? Only two nitpicks: (1) the sticker on the windshield says to return 3000 miles from now. I know that's been standard practice for years, but 3000 miles is too short of an interval for an oil change on a modern car, unless driven in special circumstances, and (2) the receipt shows the alignment was done and the car seems better than ever, but the receipt doesn't actually show whether the car was adjusted or if instead everything was already in spec. Update: A day after this review was posted, I received a call from Greg, the service manager. He emailed me a copy of the alignment spec sheet, which showed the car before and after the alignment was done (and my car was out of spec and adjusted), and told me the technician misprinted the sticker--it should have been 7500 miles. I believe him, as, upon closer inspection, the sticker indicated I should come back in 3500 miles, which is an interval no one recommends. read more

Anyway, I got a nice call from Vitaliy detailing what the techs found, when the part would be in and when I could pick up. When I picked my Impreza up, he explained what they fixed. I think it super nice they take the time to do that, instead of treating you like you know nothing. I've been to car shops before where they ignore you or treat you differently because you're female. We recently bought a 2018 Subaru Outback from Marc Lasanta at Herb Gordon Subaru in Silver Spring, MD. We got a very good price on the car, and Marc was a pleasure to deal with. I'd go back to Herb Gordon for another Subaru if we could afford two new cars at once! Meantime, I'll recommend them to friends. After my husband's old car died, I researched new cars that were crashworthy, fuel-efficient and affordable. (I pick the cars for our family because I'm obsessive about auto safety.) I considered several mid-sized SUVs, and we test drove a couple. But dealers either hounded me, or dodged questions about their car's performance on Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests. After settling on a 2018 Subaru Outback--which passed the newest IIHS crash tests--I discovered the Costco auto buying program. It funneled me to Herb Gordon Subaru. Marc responded immediately to my email and answered all my questions. No slickness. Just nice, polite, helpful. It was such a relief after the fraught conversations with other dealers. And he was efficient--which mattered because I had to leave town and needed to get the car deal done fast. Marc got the white Outback we wanted transferred to Herb Gordon's lot within hours. When my husband and I got to the dealership that evening, the price and options on the Outback were as expected. No haggling. No stress. We also got Subaru's zero percent financing, which was handled by a guy named Mark, who made the process easy. After all the paperwork was done, a woman named Beth walked us through the all of the features and electronics on the car. She was quiet, cool and a total pro. She knew her stuff and explained everything very well. Only hiccup was that roof rails still had to be attached to the car and the service department could not could not do it that night. (It was after 8:00 p.m. by then.) But honestly, it didn't matter to me. Customer service and lack of customer need & interest have become less and less important to the person (s) who are here to help you with such an important investment. The phone call was answered very professionally and was not quick to respond " I don't know or maybe" He invited us in and though we had been through a less than good experience at another Subaru dealer in Gaithersburg we opened up to allow the sass person and the entire Herb Gordon family the opportunity. Let's back up a few weeks when a simple "here are the options we have questions about and would like in my wife's car " turned into..." No eyesight is not available on this car" and " build it online and that's all that is available to us " put my wife into a holding pattern with buying a car. That experience in Gaithersburg made her so upset since we have bought more than 3 cars from them. Now Let's get to the amazing orientation and options and why you should drive to Herb Gordon. All questions, options were easy to answer by Jim and sales manager Steve was just a joy to come to a very fair and agreeable trade in without any haggles. He also sped up the process on ordering my wife's car and kept his word to find one sooner if he could. The new car arrived and they also helped me keep my wife surprised and entertained for the delivery. Everyone including Diego in finance, the staff in the showroom made an amazing Subaru experience become the new standard and how every retail experience should feel like. The knowledge of Jim comes from years of dedication as he's been there for almost 10 years, but don't let the friendliness, comic relief and excellent customer service fool you! LOVE this place and will be bringing my Subaru in to have it serviced here from now on. I had taken my car to Firestone to find out why the steering wheel felt so heavy. Firestone changed some pump supposedly. Yet, the steering wheel was still almost impossible to move. Firestone suggested I have my "rack and pinion" changed. Sounded fishy. I took my car to Herb Gordon Subaru and found out that the pump that Firestone had put in was leaking (it was a reconditioned pump instead of a new one). So, I got a refund from Firestone and Herb Gordon Subaru fixed my car, using NEW products. On top of that, they loaned me a car to use FOR FREE. They have won a customer for life. P.S. - They have donuts in the CLEAN waiting room. Who else does that? Lots of respect for their clients. read more

Since moving to the Silver Spring area in 2010, I've been coming to Herb Gordon Subaru for all my stock part and minor service needs since it's most convenient to me. I'm really rating this dealership with 4.5 stars, as the service here has been excellent. I would give a higher rating if only their parts department would stock aftermarket parts (like Annapolis Subaru), but that's really a minor point. Most of their clients that bring their Subarus here for service have stock configurations, so it's probably not economically viable for the dealership to stock aftermarket parts in this location anyways. It would really only benefit me and a handful of other enthusiasts that I see in the area. :) Making an appointment at Herb Gordon Subaru couldn't be any easier - just go to the dealership website, choose the type of service or repair you need, pick a service advisor to host you, your preferred day and time, and then "submit". Done! You can elect to register your name and contact info with the site if you believe you'll be making future appointments. If you do, then registration will only have to be done once. I was a bit concerned at first coming here since in no way is my Forester XT stock. I wasn't sure how the service advisor(s) would react or respond. Fortunately, it wasn't an issue. I didn't feel as if my vehicle was unreasonably scrutinized nor was my service requests questioned or denied. I knew that my car was out of OEM warranty coverage, so I didn't try to get any service or repair covered by Subaru or the dealership. If you're honest, you really shouldn't have any problems. :) I've been assisted by Vitaliy Khlebnikob and Ken Hanscom at all my appointments, and they have been fantastic to deal with as service advisors. They are courteous, attentive, and did a good job in keeping me informed about the cause of my issues, repairs done, and what to watch out for in the future. As for the parts department, I've been served by James Miller and he's been extremely helpful in locating the random push-clip, retaining screw, and trim piece for my car. I went to Herb Gordon in Silver Spring on Labor Day. I was helped by Mike S. He did a great job and I was prepared by the car from him, but I had a few questions about the type of oil in the car used. I called him back later that day and asked the staff to leave a message for him and left a message on his answering machine for at least three days for him to call me. I never heard from him. In the meantime, I went to another dealership and found a car that I liked and they answered all my questions, so I bought the car from them instead of Herb Gordon. Good customer service is important to me and if Mike S. wouldn't call me before the sale, I don't expect I would hear from him after the sale. It's a shame he didn't return my call, but fortunately I was able to find a great car at a place that valued me as a customer. I purchased a new car from Herb Gordon Subaru last week, and it was the most pleasant car buying experience I have ever had. Everyone at Herb Gordon was friendly and knowledgeable, and seemed to be going for a completely different vibe from the usual car dealership. They even had me test drive the car without anyone from the dealership coming along! There was about a week in between my first contact with the dealership to the purchase of the car. During that time, the salesman (Charles Bulow) communicated with me efficiently and courteously whenever I asked a question, but never tried to apply any kind of pressure. I recently picked my vehicle from being in storage over 4 years. Herb Gordon Subaru happened to be located on my way back to Arlington so I decided to get my car serviced at this location just to double check to see if it had any issues after being in storage for that long. Bob Thompson kindly greeted me and explained what type of service I should get for my vehicle. He also recommended to have the faulty airbags replaced covered under a previous airbag recall. Furthermore, he somehow was able to notice that I was military and quickly added the military discount to my invoice. The facility was in a very high state of police (some of you military review readers will understand this terminology). This was a good car buying experience. I got a great car, Subaru Forester Limited, for a great price. It was listed for a couple thousand less than other dealerships for the same model. Which means they were cutting out all the back and forths to make a quicker sale by giving their real best price. (it was the end of the 2012 model year and we got the last one on the lot, to make room for the 2013s) Lakshaman was great, good honest and basically thats all i could ask for. it was a good experience all around, and i'm super happy with my car too. read more

By far the best Subaru service center I have been to (visited several in NY and MA). I liked that it was so easy to make an appointment online and they have a really nice service waiting room. Excellent customer service and they don't overcharge or push unnecessary "repairs." Will definitely be going back! read more

I've been having my 2012 Forester serviced here since 2014. I've had a few hiccups such as requesting and paying for new wipers only to discover they were never changed the next time it rained (twice). This past month, my car developed a vibration while I was driving on the highway shortly after I was in for an oil change and tire rotation. I pulled into a service station to get the car looked at. They found that the lug nuts on the four tires were only hand tight, and not torqued down. Old wipers are one thing, but this could have been deadly. read more

This is a review of their service department and advisor Vitaliy K. As a former service advisor for 16 years, I can tell you I have a keen eye and can be difficult to please on a service visit. I know how quickly I should be greeted, I know how much things should cost and how long they should take. In my 5 + visits since moving to MD, I have been completely satisfied with every aspect of my experience here. Each oil change/ rotation visit has been done quickly while I wait. I had done a larger service visit and was offered a car for the day even though my Forrester is no longer under warranty. When waiting, I have been given regular updates in a timely manner and am always asked by my advisor if he can pick me up something as I always come over lunch time. This dealer also has a keychain and after 4 or 5 visits, you get a free oil change. I can tell you it was awesome to save the cost of a synthetic oil change just because I am a regular customer. My car is completely washed and dried at every visit. Again, as a former advisor myself, it's hard to wow me, and this dealer has hit the mark. Great job! read more

Nothing like having an appointment and standing by your car for 20 minutes with NOT one person acknowledging you are there. I finally asked for help and I was barked at that they were busy and I would just have to wait. I hate this place. If it wasn't for that my warranty requires that I bring it here I would never come back. It's like this every single time. Once I filled out the survey with bad reviews because of the constant lousy service and the service manager Greg admonished me to NEVER do that. Really?! read more

You guys lost a sale due to Debbie's lack of customer service and her defensive and aggressive way of dealing with a customer. I had a deal in hand and wanted to see if she can work something out with her sales mgmt team. Tried to do by email. She called and i returned her call. It started out fine enough but it shortly turned in to a clear case of her not knowing what car this was for, and when asked about it, her getting defensive that she was dealing with many customers and that I wasnt her customer. Which is totally understandable if it wasnt for her tone and that she sounded like it she was warranted for not knowing about her customer. I misspoke and said I was inquirimg about the white car to which she said, actually the stock number belongs to a blue car. Accused me of not knowing what I wanted... which totally was uncalled for. Her continuous berating attitiude was so off putting that I said nevermind, ill just take my business elsewhere to which she replied, shes not ok with that and that since I made a mistake, she should be ok with her mistake. Again, the point is not the mistake she's made but the way she decided to handle it. Instead of just apologizing in the beginning and moving on, it got down to that shes been in the business 31 years and that shes not a young salesperson and how shes a professional and that you said this so i said this and yoou said this and i said that, yadda yadda. At the end of the quick 5 mins conversation, I just asked that the relationship is obviously not going to work out to which she replied, obviously.. i said im going to hang up now, thank you. She mutters under her breathe, fine leave! And then hangs up the phone. Needless to say, it didnt leave a good taste. For something that could have been an easy thing to move past, she surely escalated it to this. I left a vm with the SM but havent heard back. If you want to deal with a not so young salesperson who have been in the business 31 years who will patrpnize you, there you go. read more

I've been having some problems with my car battery so I was referred to go to this dealership by Subaru Roadside Assistance... and I'm so glad they brought me to this one! Amazing top-notch customer service, friendly and caring staff members, and they don't try to rip you off like most dealerships. Few months ago I took my 2005 Impreza to Herb Gordon Subaru to replace one tire with new tire; when I picked up the car the service advisor told me that his technician said my head gasket leaks and the estimate to replace the head gasket is about $ 2,800;.... I then decided a second opinion and went to Subaru dealer in Annapolis.... the technician from Annapolis Subaru told me that my car is in very good shape and that my head gasket was not leaking at all.....the technician was too gracious that while the car was still lifted took me to the shop and have me see the head gasket myself that it was not leaking. The 50 miles trip to Annapolis was worth the trip saving me the unnecessary repairs . By looking the reviews here, Herb Gordon Subaru seems to be notorious in telling customers their car has a head gasket leak to generate revenue from struggling customer... I have read reviews about few head gasket issues here and most of them were pretty much negative. read more
