I would've never found this hidden hole in a wall spot on my own, but my friends had a coupon so I was down to try & it's a bit of a mistake The spot is very cute. It's decorated like a lounge. Very hard to find, no signs on the back door. Service is good. Nothing wrong there. Best dishes for me were the eggs and the kung pao chicken. The shredded potatoes were flavored well, but very thick cut compared to home made. I usually love Szechuan cuisine and have it once a week, but this place was way too spicy for most of us and we all had . I had to call out of work the next day great if you like a challenge, but I definitely can't go back.

Love the name of this restaurant - if you are Hangry, come to Hengry! They serve up traditional Guizhou - Miao style cuisine, which is quite different than the "regular" Chinese food that one would associate with. For one, they specialize in Miao hot spicy soup, which contains the unique Guizhou-Miao pepper oil with a citrusy aroma. Leo (the owner) and his staff were welcoming and friendly throughout our dining experience. Leo was happy to explain the menu/dishes to us. You order on this tablet at the table; ours had a problem where after we submitted the order, it erased, prompting us to have to resubmit our orders. Other than this minor issue, our overall experience here was fantastic. The ambiance was eclectic, yet comforting. I didn't really get the art work around the walls of the restaurant, but it still worked. As for the food, don't judge - we ate like pigs ... 1. Twice-cooked Pork (5/5) Pork belly that's twice cooked meaning the pork is 1st boiled to tenderize the meat, followed by a 2nd cooking in a wok to make the edges crispy. Well it sure was cooked to perfect crisp and tenderness while giving off a pleasant spicy-roasted flavor. 2. House-fried rice (5/5) Seriously one of the best fried rices I've had. It's very fragrant and peppery, but not too salty. It contains pork-bacon, Chinese sausage, black beans, egg, and green onion. Pairs well with the salted duck dish 3. Salted Duck (5/5) Salt marinated duck that is then boiled/simmered in hot water and finally chilled to give it that dry-aged meat flavor, but yet tenderness and melt-in-your mouth skin. It paired perfectly with the housemate sweet-fermented spicy sauce. Also goes well with the house fried rice. 4. Sichuan Beef and Tripe (5/5) The beef and tripe were fresh and had a good smokey, sichuan pepper oil flavor. The added fresh cilatro and green onions added a refreshing herby kick. 5. Egg Foo Young (5/5) The name of this dish was a bit misleading because egg foo young usually means egg pancake omelette. This is actually steamed egg. The egg was steamed to perfection and it was not "eggy". It is served in light soy with sesame oil sauce and garnished with green onions. 6. Spicy Fish Mint Salad (4/5) Chinese lettuce with a dressing that seemed to be a combination of fish sauce, chili oil, mint, garlic and cilantro. When it first came out, it actually smelled like marijuana (skunk smell), but that quickly dissipated and then you just smell the pleasant aroma of sesame oil. It's kind of a weird dish, but in my opinion, it's unique and still quite enjoyable. Overall, it's light, refreshing, and minty. 7. Miao Sour Soup with lamb (5/5) The lamb was not too gamey, but it was a bit tough, mainly because it's been cooking in the hot pot. Unlike beef, lamb meat gets tougher the longer it cooks. Fortunately, it is sliced very thin, so it is still relatively easy to eat. The soup base was one-of-a-kind amazing made from crushing Miao peppers. It's very citrusy, tangy, and surprisingly, not too spicy despite the intense visual redness of it. The chili oil broth is the good fragrant - aromatic spicy, not just pure heat. This chili oil is unique in that it has a lemongrass flavor that gives the soup flavor that's reminiscent of tom yum. 8. Fried Stuffed Eggplant with Shrimp Paste (4.5/5) Never thought egg plant and shrimp paste would ever go together, but they made it work. The egg plant batter was fried to a perfect crisp and you can taste the batter dough flavor, which I personally like. My bestie said "it's almost like eating a cookie with shrimp inside" - lol. The house-made sweet-tangy sauce paired well reminding me a bit of eating sweet and sour fried fish fillet. 9. Stir-fried Kidney and Liver with Pickled Chili (5/5) Personally, I am not a fan of eating organ meats, but my bestie who does, said it was "good-quality, fresh kidney and liver. The sauce was gingery and spicy." Pairs well with the house fried rice 10. Fried Tofu Balls (5/5) Each order comes with 4 tofu balls. The tofu balls were lightly fried on the outside to a nice crisp, while the inside was tofuie and spongelike to absorb the heavenly spicy-tangy, cilantro-y, sesame oil sauce that came on the side. A+++ dining experience. We'll be coming back to try out more dishes.

Yes! It really is all that! Ambiance, service and food all 5 stars! The ambiance is really cool, I don't know how to describe it. Funky art, and modernist sofas and chairs to sit on. Very nice vibe! The owner recommended we try the fish soup - it's native to his home region. It was fantastic! Of all the dishes we had, this one really met the portion size for family style well. Everything else was delicious. Fried rice, scallion pancake, king pao chicken, and I can't remember the rest but it was all really good! And he was very informative, the service attentive, Friendly but not over bearing. We were there past close and never felt rushed. Group of 5, we each ordered an item, plus we had an appetizer and a few sodas. $134. Not bad for a place this memorable!

Tucked next to a hotel in Alhambra is a restaurant serving Guizhou / Miao style cuisine. I myself am not knowledgeable about this type of Chinese food but Leo provided excellent service and knowledge regarding it. If I'm remembering correctly, the regions distinct mountain peppers are pressed into an oil that provides (in my description) an intense almost citrusy flavor, as if Thai tom yum had a baby with Szechuan spice in a surprisingly refreshing yet hot and savory soup base. It results in an addictive flavor that I've honestly never had before! The decor and ambiance were fantastic as well and I appreciated the eclectic artworks strewn about the restaurant. Would definitely love to come back and try more regional specialties.

The owner (or partner) guy is very polite and friendly! He explained to me how the restaurant named Hengry as: Henry is hungry The only one waiter looks very busy doing the cleaning and dishes serving, but unfortunately he didn't pay attention to any customers needs or asking if we need anything as of a courtesy's working in such of a higher-end restaurant... 1) Miao Sour Soup-fish filet 特色鳕魚酸湯:4.5-star Fish flakes are fresh n tender. Soup offers a light touch of fermented Roman tomato mixing w/similar to lemongrass kinda flavors to brings out the soul of this food items. Sliced Lotus root, seaweed, bean sprouts and wood fungus. It's not so greasy nor rich, yet it's very satisfied! 2). Fish Mint Salad 涼拌魚腥草 4-star I wd give it 5-star if it's not so salty... Crunchy marinated Fish Mint in sesame oil, vinegary sauces is very refreshing. 3). Sautés Mixed mushroom 4-star Various mushrooms, Especially Velvet mushroom is so delish. Love it as the dish did not come in watery as of other places... it's simple yet full of flavors. 4) scallion pan cake 4-star Crispy fluffy delish, it's perfectly to pair with/the above dishes!

Went here to celebrate pre-Thanksgiving dinner with some friends and we had a blast! Glad that they were able to squeeze us in for about 1-1.5hrs before 7pm reservation. The restaurant itself is not your typical Chinese restaurant, in our opinion, the restaurant is pretty fancy and very decorated with a lot of arts. We ordered about 5 different dishes, and all of them are delicious although some of them are too spicy for me. However, according to my friends who like spicy food, they are good. They have parking structure at the back and plenty of space too.

We ordered a sour fish soup but there were only two of us. Not a single regret as we finished it all. The flavoring was spot on and not too spicy or salty. Paired it with a pork belly with green mustard rice plate lunch special and we were very happy. Will return with more people. Food came out quickly!

Wholly hell this place is so good! It's a restaurant next to a motel with lots of free parking. The restaurant is beautiful and hip. Get the sour fish soup you won't regret it. They also have lunch specials every day of the week. We got the pork belly with mustard greens. Everything was amazing and the service is on point. Come here you won't regret it. Happy Yelping!

I had been eyeing this place for a while and finally got to try it for lunch. There was plenty of seating and no wait when we arrived for lunch on Wednesday. You order everything with an iPad at your table. The service was fast and friendly. There's plenty of parking behind the restaurant next to the hotel including covered parking and an upper level. We ordered: Miao Sour Soup with Fish Fillets: Very uniquely flavored tomato-based soup with pieces of white fish, mushrooms, lotus root, bean sprouts, seaweed, scallions, and other vegetables. It had a very strong lemongrass flavor. It looks spicy but it was not at all, as I think the red is from tomatoes. I've never had this combination of flavors before so it was definitely worth trying. The soup is served in a large metal dish with a flame keeping it hot. It's probably enough to serve 4 or 5 people. Potato Pancakes: An appetizer with 3 small potato pancakes which were crispy outside and kind of like mashed potatoes inside. Good. Came with a little bit of cabbage and chili powder. Scallion Pancake: I had thought this would be a different take than the usual but it was pretty standard, not a lot of flavor. Stir-Fried Crispy Pork With Diced Potato: Fried diced potatoes with small fried pork bits, chilies, scallions, garlic and ginger. Mostly potatoes. Just slightly spicy. Overall, a unique restaurant to check out if you're interested in trying different kinds of Chinese food.

First time trying Guizhou cuisine at Hengry and it was such a unique experience! Known for its sour and spicy flavors, the dishes were actually more bold and flavorful than spicy. We ordered family-style for our party of nine and tried the sour soup fish, dragon-style chili oil duck, braised pork belly with mustard greens, fried tofu balls, chili oil chicken, and more. Every dish had rich, layered flavors and felt different from typical Chinese cuisine. The sourness added a really comforting depth that made everything stand out. Definitely a great spot for group dining and for anyone wanting to explore regional Chinese flavors beyond the usual dishes.

Hengry serves bold and vibrant flavors of Guizhou cuisine. It is located in the City of Alhambra. I was previously here for a dinner event. The food was so good. I wanted to return to offer my patronage and support. I arrived at Hengry 15 minutes prior to closing. I got lucky and was able to still place an order. Upon entry, no one was at the hostess stand. A minute or so later, a staff member walked by and I asked him if I could place an order to-go. He asked me to wait and then he went inside the kitchen. Another young gentleman came out to take my order. He was the owner, Leo. He was pleasant and nice. I got a total of 3 dishes as shown below. Wait time was about 15 minutes or so which wasn't too bad. 1. Chinese Lettuce in Sesame Oil - Hands down the BEST vegetable dish ever! Very fresh and crunchy. It has a slight spicy kick to it especially with all the red chili peppers. Great portions. MUST GET EVERY TIME! 2. Stir-Fried Mixed Mushrooms with Red Pepper - Delicious with lots of different types of mushrooms. Flavor was on point! Good portions. Another MUST GET EVERY TIME! 3. Twice Cooked Pork - This one was okay. The pork slices were a little bit tough IMHO. Flavor was good though. I probably won't get this one again. Ambiance is beautiful with all the creative wall artwork. They have different kinds of indoor seating such as loungers, chairs, and bar stools. Inside space is very comfortable and relaxing. Free parking is available behind this restaurant. They do share the parking lot with the hotel to the right of them. Do not park in the plaza that is to the left of them as your car may be towed. Please read the signs. Highly recommend Hengry! If you're up for a new and exciting fine dining experience that comes with a creative twist in Guizhou style, this place is for you!

A fantastic dining experience! There is free parking, which is always nice and they seat you within five minutes of your arrival. It was full of people when we got there but they get everyone in and out and you don't feel rushed at all. There were even people sitting at the bar that was super friendly and they were talking about their favorites. They were clearly regulars. I got a Sauvignon Blanc at the bar and it was a generous pour. They have an iPad for you to put in your order to send to the kitchen and I'm telling you be ready to eat when you hit send because the food comes out within five minutes one after the other. It was amazing and we had such a feast! We even peaked in the private room, which looks stunning and very intimate. We love the insight, art of the restaurant, the LED fireplace , and all the abstract statement pieces. The owner and the manager Mark are so nice and friendly. They really make you feel comfortable and they are very relatable. Now let's get into the food: Chicken dumplings were a 10 out of 10. Can't go wrong with chicken and dumplings. A great flavor. Mix veggie soup was my favorite as it had cauliflower, bok choy, and other mixed veggies. The broth was so tasty, and it was shareable amongst three other people. The cucumber smash was a 10 out of 10. It was so light and refreshing. I love the garlic pieces in the dish and it wasn't overpowering at all. I even had leftovers to take home. The potato scallion pancake came out very fresh. It is light and fluffy. Not a dense writing at all. I like the scallion flavor and eating it with my rice. The mushroom sour soup came highly recommended by the manager. It was pretty good. Especially if you like mushrooms. All the mushrooms were cooked well and the soup was tasty but I wish it was spicier. They do have spicy options, however so I make it that next time. It is huge and shareable for a whole table. Highly recommend if you want something hardy The spicy fried rice was delicious. I wish it was spicier, but that's because I can handle a lot of spice. It was a great balance with the egg and other mixed ingredients. Rice was cooked perfectly. The jumbo shrimp was just what the name says. It wasn't seasoned or had really any flavor just regular steam jumbo shrimp. He came to soy sauce with clothes with garlic in it, which she gave it the flavor and eat it. Still very juicy and well picked shrimp quality. Kung PAO chicken was not my favorite, but I love the nuts in the dish. It had these chili pieces in it. I think that was throwing the flavor off to me, but it has a lot of spices in it so if you like spices and dishes for you. The bell peppers were well cooked in this dish. Everything I had was absolutely delicious. You must try that edamame with garlic as well and grab a drink as you're dying here. It is such a cool vibe for a date night or a group outing. I will be back!

Delicious, delightful, dutiful. The food was delicious. The ambience was delightful. The servers were dutiful. I was a bit skeptical with how well the service was going to be since we placed our own orders on a tablet. I was glad that the servers were still attentive throughout the evening (I only got Leo's name, but there was another person making sure our experience was positive). They continued to offer us drinks and frequent check ins with our group. The food came out quickly. We ordered one scallion pancake- it was crispy on the outside and had a good chew. The mapo tofu hit us with its umami & the Szechuan beef challenged my spice tolerance. Give this place a try before it goes viral!

I've…read moreseen social media influencers rave about it, and several people in my personal life have recommended it too. All I can say is the hype is real. My crew and I went on a Friday night, and even though it was very busy, we were seated fairly quickly. There were four of us, and here's what we ordered: chicken fried rice, Shanghai-style chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, and juicy pork dumplings. Chicken Fried Rice: It was soft and pillowy with great flavor, though I felt it could have used a bit more color. It looked a little pale, but it was still delicious. Shanghai-Style Chow Mein: This was perfect. The flavor was spot on, the sauce was well-balanced, and the noodles had the ideal texture. The ratio of noodles, vegetables, and meat was just right. Sweet and Sour Chicken: This was the highlight for me. My only regret is not ordering more to take home. The chicken was crispy without being overdone, and it was coated in that delicious sweet and sour sauce. Juicy Pork Dumplings: We were at a dumpling house, so we had to order dumplings. These did not disappoint. They were very flavorful, and the broth inside was rich and satisfying. We originally planned to order more dishes, but the portions were generous, and we ended up with just the right amount to leave satisfied. Overall, this place lives up to the hype. I can't wait to come back and try more.

my friend and i stopped by here for lunch…read more - the inside was nice and we got seated right away - we got the chive & pork dumplings and the spicy wontons (w/ pork & shrimp). the dumplings (4.3/5) was yummy and flavorful, our favorite out of the two dishes. the spicy wontons (4.1/5) weren't that spicy but it was also flavorful with the shrimp and pork combo. we did use the spicy sauce from the wontons as a dip for our dumplings and it made it taste yummier. - although the food was yummy, the service was slow. it took a while for them to not only ask for our orders but it took a long time (~30 minutes) for our food to come out. the table that ordered after us got their food before us and they had a bigger party...the servers that were cleaning the tables even looked over at our table and saw that we didn't get our food yet. we got our wontons first and then ~10 minutes got our wontons which made the overall service very slow. overall, this was a decent place to try out during lunchtime.

We come here for the low price wonton noodles, steamed spareribs on steamed rice, and the beef rice…read morenoodle rolls. We also order their HK style lemon iced tea. It's pretty good here and they have complimentary refills! They're known for their rice noodle rolls here and you can order them, along with their small dim sum menu, all day long. The wonton noodles here were just $13.98! They come with 5 large wontons and vegetables over wonton noodles. I always recommend adding chili oil. The steamed spareribs on steamed rice have some bones, just like the ones you find at dim sum. But there's a lot of meat in the steamed rice bowl for a single person. Free parking in rear parking lot. Entrance at the front on Garvey Ave. They have 2 entrances in front now. Left door for to-go orders and right door for dine-in.

The staff are great, communication wise, it was a good service. They don't hover around your table. They let you eat in peace then check back every now and then. We ordered several dishes and each and every one of them were tasty. We came before lunch hour so not sure how busy this place gets. Are we going back? Absolutely! This is on my list to go especially for a weekend out.

Been here a few times now. The only bad experience I had was when they first opened. Their hours…read morewere messy. Went 3 times and it was always closed lol Every visit after was pleasant. We got seated pretty quickly even when they were busy. My most recent visit, the foods improved so much. We got a ribeye. I tried a piece and literally wanted the whole plate to myself lol it was so juicy and so tender!! The salted fish fried rice without chicken was delicious. It wasn't so salty. The rice was perfectly cooked. Bolognese was tasty. It was also not that salty. Perfecto amount of sauce and cheese. The vermicelli was surprisingly better than it looked. I wasn't expecting much from it. However, I noticed I kept eating it hahha The lemon iced tea was a let down. Even though they offered refills, but there were white stuff flowing around. The staff didn't even have an explanation for it. He even mistakenly took it for some passion fruit drinks and said it was some sugar they used. Right when I told him it was lemon iced tea, he said let me change it out for you. He came back, but the drink still looked somewhat weird. I took a sip and toss the whole cup. Seating could be a bit dirty. Will return for the ribeye hehhe hopefully the quality will be the same or even better

I had to be patient and just wait it out until someone left. It wasn't long until I snatched a parking spot. Wow, what a neat and cool looking restaurant! Upon entry, I felt as though I was actually in a restaurant in Hong Kong. I did take-out instead of dine-in, but I'll have to come back to have a dine-in experience. It should be interesting and intriguing for sure. I ordered 4 dishes and 1 drink over the phone. My order was already ready when I got here. Cool beans! Everything was delicious especially the lamb stew... it wasn't gamey or anything. Vermicelli had really good wok flavor. The chow and lo mein dishes were one of the best ever eaten. Quite authentic dishes! Lastly, red bean ice was so good especially with ice cream... yummy! HomeStyle Sauteed Vermicelli Lamb Stew w/ Bean Curd Sheet Hot Pot Tomato Beef Chow Mein Wonton & Beef Brisket Lo Mein Red Bean Shaved Ice w/ Ice Cream Staff was nice and helpful. Prices were on the higher end, but quality foods come with a price. All good. Unfortunately and I don't know how I forgot to take photos of the dishes. All I got was the red bean. I'll have to snap them next time. Perhaps it will be when I dine-in. Can't wait!
