We just moved into our new house, and after a month, our brand new air conditioning unit stopped cooling. I'm very weary of shady service companies always trying to sell parts you don't need for problems you don't have. I found Steve Hempel by his great reviews on yelp and decided to give him a call. Steve was very accommodating with the appointment time. He offered to come on a weekday after I got home from work which I appreciated greatly. He arrived exactly on time, and was very courteous. He quickly found the problem - the installer of my cooling system failed to include a certain part that was needed. Steve had the part in his truck. He installed it within 10 minutes and my air conditioner was working beautifully. Knowing that we had just moved in, he even offered to check out our furnace to make sure it looked good. The entire process took less than 20 minutes. I let Steve know I would be calling him for any future repairs and recommending him to anyone that needed service. read more

A/C was blowing warm air. Probably had a leak and needed freon. Called Hempel Air out to look at unit. Confirmed that A/C needed freon. It is a 3 ton unit with a 6.5 freon capacity. Was charged 7.5 lbs of R22 freon plus service call. Just did not know if some short cuts were taken -- for example, flipping over the R22 freon while charging the A/C unit (slurping). Supposedly this is no no. Coldest of the A/C was not checked after the R22 freon recharge "was done". Also, suspected being overcharged for material, etc. read more

My central heater stopped working last month and it was freezing. Called up Steve, and he was done within 2 hours. A fan was broken in the system. Everything works great now. Will definitely use again. Great price too. read more

Highly recommended! I called Hempel because of all the positive reviews. Sure enough, Steve delivered. He arrived on time, diagnosed the problem and replaced a blown fuse and bad capacitor on the AC unit. He also added additional freon. During the whole time, he was very cordial and took time out to educate me a little about AC. And to top it off, he charged me a very reasonable price. I would definitely use him again. read more

I am not going to parrott all the positive comments here but will say take all the positives below and that's what I experienced. VERY nice guys, very honest, and fair priced. My AC was old and very time consuming to get into yet these guys did and I still have my arms and legs. I HIGHLY Recommend these guys and will call again when needed. read more

Steve was great. Got the work done for less than half the estimate given by another servicer. Came out in one day. Very appreciative of his work and honesty. read more

Steve was awesome! He fixed my furnace in less than 2 hours after a large company couldn't do it. Steve is honest, up front, and very friendly. I would highly recommend thjat anyone with an HVAC issue call Hempel Air first! read more

I had a heating fan problem. Called Steve who responded within an hour, very prompt. We set up an appointment for the next day & he arrived on time. He's very respectful of my property (white carpet) and brought booties which I very much appreciated. Steve really knows his stuff and has been doing this for 30+ years. He was able to diagnose the problem immediately, & had all the parts for the repair in his truck, so I didn't have to wait for any parts to be ordered. He is also very courteous, friendly, & professional. Besides fixing the system, we chatted about this history of various heating systems & the different components & how that affected how everything worked. Very friendly guy. I would not hesitate to call him again & recommend him to my friends & family. Thanks Steve ! read more

This is a great company! I've been in business for twenty years and have finally found an a/c company I can trust! I called and Jason came out within an hour. He had my a/c diagnosed and back running quite quickly. He was extremely thorough and professional. read more

Great service. Was in a real bind - my mother-n-law called late in the evening and had heater trouble - the fan would not turn off even though the thermostat showed that everything should be off. I was out of town and could not help her out. Did get her to turn the unit off through the breaker box. I found Hempel from reviews on Yelp. She contact Hempel and they scheduled an appointment and showed up on time. They did their diag and found the problem and more importantly showed her the shorted control board. Really appreciated their promptness and honesty. Highly recommend Hempel. read more

Hempel Air gets a 5-star rating from us. We have just moved to Diamond Bar, into a house that had been remodeled in the past. The previous owners had expanded the kitchen, master bedroom and bath, but in doing so they did not extend the HVAC ducts/vents to take care of the new space. Both the kitchen and the master bathroom were extremely warm this past summer and we expected they would be cold in the winter. We called a number of HVAC companies to come out and give us an estimate of what was needed to correct the problem. But they never called me back or I had to wait until December. Then I called Jack Hempel. He came right out and checked out the existing ducting and vents in the house. He told us what was needed and gave us a reasonable estimate for the work. We said OK and they scheduled the work for the next week. Jack and his two sons arrived mid-morning of the scheduled day and quickly went to work. They had originally estimated the work would be done by 5:00 PM. But to our surprise they completed the work by 1:30. They added three new vents and replaced one of the vents in the kitchen with a grill that perfectly matched the word cabinets. They even checked the Freon level and replaced the heater filter. They also left the house clean of any work debris. It is great to have a cool kitchen and master bath. We highly recommend Hempel Air. Thank you, Steve and your two sons, for a great job. read more

Steve is a nice guy and seems good at what he does but a bit pricey. Charged for service call. Also charged for diagnostic service which took only 35 minutes total, and not 1 hour he wrote on the invoice. That was another charge. For freon 1 lb. charge. Total of $186. I had 5 lb. of freon put in all service included for $200 from another AC company 3 months ago. read more

AC on my townhouse roof stopped blowing cold air so i took a chance and called Steve at Hempel AC based on Yelp reviews. He returned my call later that day and i was able to schedule an appointment in two days. He was prompt and courteous. Found the problem within minutes and installed the new part which he had in his truck. Total time was less than an hour. Reasonable price. read more

My sons furnace was not working. It was 37 years old. We reviewed yelp for HVAC repair men and found that Hempel Air had a high rating and was local. Steve came over the day we called him and fixed our old heater for a very reasonable price. He did an excellent job. We will invite Steve to bid on replacement of our system. We were very impressed with his knowledge and his friendliness. Good man. An asset to yelp. read more

Always a good investment with this father & son team. They're so nice and friendly and on time too. Call backs are quick. Nothing negative at all. Been my go to people for 7-8 years now. read more

I am surprised by the overall rating for this guy. My AC was not turning on consistently. He came and changed a bunch of parts and it worked while he was there. He charged 3X for the parts and even shamelessly said that he charges that much for parts. After a few months, same problem. he came back and changed a few more parts. Again charged an arm and a leg. Still the same problem. On top of this, he said I don't need to buy another furnace, though I told him my furnace was 15 years old. Of course he doesn't want me to buy a new one. This way, he can keep screwing me. read more

Had my house breaker tripping constantly whenever the a.c. would run. I would reset at least 5-6 times a day last summer. Ugggh!! Called Hempel Air to come down and check it out . Steve came down to West Covina the same day and was able to correct the problem. He gave me a very affordable price before the repair was made. I stayed there with him the whole time and he was very thourough.Steve goes above and beyond. He didn't just fix the problem but also made sure everything else was good. He replaced one bad part plus added another part that was needed. He also checked and adjusted my freon. This was my first time calling a serviceman for my a.c. I was a little hesitant at first and I'm really glad I called Hempel Air. Steve was very kind and he really knows his stuff. I will definitely call him back for all future problems. If I would have known how much it would have cost to fix this problem I would have done this a long time ago. We are so thankful!! read more

Steve didn't once try to upsell me. That alone wins an instant 5 star review. He had practical fixes (read non price gouging) to both my heating and cooling unit. I've had a big name air and heating company come out in the past and I can't say my sphincter has ever quite recovered from that visit. I have heat, I have cooling, I have Steve to thank for that. read more

I have used this company for a very old A/C Unit that is noisy as can be, but works great for a few years and then goes out. Hempel is the only one that can fix this particular model. And they have never gouged me. It's time to give them a call again. I hope they can give me a good price like before. If Hempel tells me it is time to replace the unit, I will. read more

7/14/11 - Steve Hempel came to service my Lennox air conditioning and heating system. In the past I have had another service company and they always tried to tell me I needed to replace parts, add upgrades to my system and generally sell me something I didn't need. After performing a general maintenance and replacing my HEPA filter(which he said should last me about 2 yrs before needing replacing), Steve said that my unit checked out fine. I am very pleased and would recommend him as he is honest and trustworthy. Thanks Steve! read more

I found Hempel via yelp and I have zero regrets. I called and left a message and my phone call was returned at the end of the day. This family run business is great. I had my Freon refilled quick and easy and at a good price. We received a phone call in the morning giving us a time frame and what do you know he actually showed up as scheduled. He didn't mind me asking questions about the unit. My only complaint was the fact that they are so busy during this summer rush. I 100% will call them back for some not emergency servicing once the heat dies down. Hempel Air Conditioning has great service, they are quick, polite, knowledgeable the best part HONEST! read more

Technician come on time, take time to explain a few things then charge $185 for a new capacitor. Capacitor itself should be less than $35 so $150 for 5 minutes labor is wait too much. Yikes. Next time we try to DIY first. read more

These people are the real deal!! I read the reviews on Yelp and called them to check out our a/c that went out during the hottest week of this summer. They were pretty busy and since it wasn't an emergency per se, their nearest appt was within 10 days. I want ahead and scheduled it. Jason, son of the owner Steve came out at the exact scheduled time and after taking a look at our system determined that one of the condessors only needed a fuse and a part and about 3 lbs of freon. This was for a very reasonable cost. And I'm talking reasonable!!! He got it working right away and we had air for the upstairs in no time!! He then proceeded to check the condessor for the downstairs unit and he found that it was in perfect working order but that it was completely empty of freon which led him to believe that there was a large leak in the line. He checked out and tested all the exposed line and couldn't find a leak but determined that the line that was not exposed and running through the inside walls and through the roof would be the culprit. Needless to say, he quoted me a price to replace that portion of the line for a great price!! I was so pleased. Prior to finding Hempel I had two other a/c companies come out to try and fix my a/c units and they gave me these CRAZY prices to replace my existing condessors because they said they were no good!! I'm so happy I went to Yelp for help!! Wow!! Hempel Air is amazing and I would do business with them in a heart beat again!! They are a super reliable, honest and reasonable repair service. read more

We met Steve about a year ago when our air conditioner seemed to be running out of steam. We found him based on the Yelp reviews because most of the other air conditioning repair people we had used left us feeling like they didn't know what they were doing or were intentionally ripping us off. When Steve left, we were so impressed, that we knew that we would hire him to install our new air conditioning unit when we were ready. Fast forward to this year... He came back and gave us a very reasonable price to install our new air conditioning and duct work. Both he and his son were on time, reliable, and charged us exactly what they said they would. We couldn't be happier and our house is now freezing cold - just the way we like it! I can't speak highly enough of them. read more

My AC unit had died and I honestly thought it was done. I called and left a message on Sunday evening, first thing Monday morning I got a call back and made an appt for that day. It was a busted transformer and a glitch with the outside compressor. It was repaired within the hour and I was good to go. The price was ridiculously reasonable and I am so grateful for the prompt service. Hempel AC saved me! thanks so much!! read more

Our heater started making a loud humming noise, so we knew we needed something repaired or replaced. I found Hempel Air in Yelp and based on their good reviews as well as being listed as a local Walnut company, I gave them a call and left a message. Within a couple of hours, I got a call from Steve Hempel. I explained issue to him and he said it was most likely a burned out motor. He said a technician would be out to my house by 2 PM to check. At about 130PM or so the tech showed up and was able to confirm that it was a burned out motor. I OK'ed the work and he completed the job in a timely manner. He also washed out the metal drum which houses the motor and made a couple of other minor adjustments all for what I believe was a fair priced based on what I found on the internet about this type of work. I would use this company again if needed. read more

Many thanks to Steve! Our heater/air conditioner hasn't been working for the past few weeks and since Sunday and Monday were so warm, we were really grouchy without the a/c. But Yelp to the rescue, and Hempel was the highest rated HVAC guys in our area. They did not disappoint. Steve was prompt, quoted a fair price, very informative, was able to diagnose our problem within a few minutes of checking out our unit, (we needed a new capacitor), had the part on his truck, and was able to repair it very quickly. Hempel Air Conditioning is our go to from now on if we ever run into more HVAC problems. Thanks again, Steve! read more

Hats off to Steve for responding so quickly to our panic phone call on a Monday morning. He got us into his schedule for Tuesday but was able to call and come by late Monday because another job ended early. Steve explained what he found to be wrong. He also tested/looked for anything else that might be wrong...letting me know how long it would take to re-cool a house of our size on one of the hottest days of the season. Price for parts and repairs were very reasonable as well. read more

Hempel Air should be your number one choice for air conditioning in this area. There are a lot of air conditioning companies that are purely trying to take advantage of their customers, but not Steve. He is a professional, honest, hardworking, reliable, and ethical air conditioning pro. We left a message with him and we scheduled an assessment. I had done my research, so when he came, I asked the right questions. He didn't try to blow smoke, but gave honest answers. He assessed our situation and offered his solutions and approach. We asked for a bid and he emailed a professional estimate a day or two later. His rates were fair and his service was flawless. We needed a new condenser and evaporator and he busted it out in one day. We were up and running in no time. I highly recommend him for all of your air conditioning needs. You don't need Angie's list to find great people and great companies. I found his company with a google search and even created this new yelp account because of him. I didn't read the reviews until after he had already done the job, and I must say, they are right on the money. Paying it forward! read more

Steve and his son (I believe) stopped by a couple months ago and looked at our condo heating system. In about 5 minutes, they told me why we were not getting any heat... Previously, we had another HVAC person come out who told us we had to change the unit. But with Steve, he told us that we just had to make a connection to one of the pipes. It was that simple. After calling the plumber to connect the pipe, we now have heat again. read more

Really nice and efficient. Didn't try to overcharge. Found the problem and fixed it right away. Highly recommend them

Our A/C kept tripping the circuit breaker. I tried replacing the capacitor and still had the same issue. We called Steve and found out that the compressor had gone out. I thought to myself, this is going to be expensive. Steve was able to install a 20% more efficient system for a very reasonable price. If you need someone who charges an honest fee by all means call Steve. He was the friendliest service person we ever met. Thanks Steve. read more
