Like father like son. Honest, reliable and dependable. In 1999 Steve, (the father) installed a refurbished AC exterior unit and told us it would last 15 or 20 years. Fast forward 23 years and this unit started making a rattling sound. Scheduled next day service with Steve. His son Barry showed up. Replaced a loose screw on exterior panel and only charged for the service visit. Unit humming again. Let us know unit has another 1 or 2 years of life. Another service might have insisted on replacing the unit immediately. Barry informed us his dad retired. We noticed he practices the same honest, reliable and dependable service he learned from his father. read more

Barry and Chris did a great job in removing then reinstalling a brand new 3 Ton AC Condenser unit for us on our 2nd Floor deck. They made the great call to bring in a crane to get the unit up there safely. Big win and fun to watch in action. Barry is keeping his dad's business legacy alive which is great to see and it's important to support our local family run businesses to keep them thriving. Thanks Hempel Air! read more

My wife and I have been living in a cold house for the past month because the repair guy we hired to fix our heater just vanished after indicating he was waiting for the part to come in. And this guy came as a recommendation from a family member. What a joke. So we decided to fire him and search for a new repair guy through Yelp. Hempel Air Conditioning was the first place that showed up when we searched in the Walnut area. We thought we'd give him a try. After all, we needed to have the heater fixed ASAP since it's now going to rain for the next week. I never got to meet Steve, as my wife was the one home at the time, but from what she told me, this guy sounds very knowledgeable and fixed the problem quickly. And the price was very reasonable. He didn't even have to order the part; he just went to a warehouse and found what he needed to get the job done. It's good to know we have a reliable heating/air conditioning person near our house. We'll definitely use him again in the future and would highly recommend him to others. We're finally warm and toasty in our house. read more

Top notch repairman with reasonable rates for AC/HVAC repair service. Steve is punctual, knowledgeable, fast, friendly, and polite. He installed my AC unit in 2004 and I haven't had a problem with the AC. I called him in early 2009 to fix a problem with the programmable thermostat and to install a pump to pump out the water from the AC and into my laundry drain. Such a godsend! If you have AC/heating problems, Steve Hempel is the guy to call at 626-331-4022. read more

I called Hempel based on the great reviews on Yelp. This is one of the reasons why Yelp is the most useful thing on the internet. Without Yelp reviews, you risk getting flakes and phonies especially when it comes to home and A/C repairs. I know since we had to put in over $20,000 worth of repairs into my home after a disastrous stint with a horrible tenant over the course a year. I called Hempel and they were very nice over the phone and accommodated my 9-5 working schedule. Steve stopped by on a Saturday morning when we were having the 100+ daily temperature heat wave. I do appreciate him coming over on a weekend in the busiest season for AC repairs. He found the issue right away. The tenant has yanked out the water hose and broke the reservoir that collected the excessive water. I had several Chinese handy man doing patch up jobs that supposedly would fix the issue to no avail. They ordered the part for me and it took a couple of weeks. They once again accommodated me and came install it over a Saturday. Even though the price was a bit steep at $600. I got a fully functioning AC now and not have to worry about water all over the garage. read more

I left messages, texts and no response till a few days later. I still gave them a chance and made an appointment. I canceled my birthday brunch because i needed service done on my a/c unit. But they were a no show and no call to tell me they're running late!! I left a message and didn't get a response till a couple hours later. I declined the late service he offered me that day. I ended up going with a more reliable company. read more

Thanks to Yelp I found Steve and Hempel Air Conditioning. I noticed his great reviews, gave him a call and left a voicemail. He called back later that afternoon and we set up an appointment for him to be at my house within a 2 hour window on the following day and he showed up as scheduled. My AC unit is 28 years old and in the past, AC repairmen have always tried to sell me on a new unit, but that was not the case with Steve. He's obviously been doing this for a while and immediately recognized my unit, asked me a couple questions, and in a matter of minutes he diagnosed the problem - a blown transformer that shorted out due to some bare wires at the outside unit. He had the part in his truck and fixed everything on the spot. While he was at it, he topped off the freon in my system. His bill was pretty much what I it would have cost just to have my AC unit serviced. Great to find a skilled, honest, and reliable businessman like Steve. I recommend him highly. read more

The story goes like this. I had Edison come over to install the summer energy rebate on my AC. The guy told me my AC is broke because the fan outside on the compressor is not spinning. So I have to fix my AC before they can install that unit on my AC. I contacted Steve and made an appointment. Steve is very prompt. When I talk to him, he is very professional and knowledgeable and answered all my questions about AC (including upgrade into a new AC system). He gave me pros and cons of doing either way, and I've decided just to go with repairing the fan. Steve was really honest, because when he was filling out my freeon he realized it wasn't that low as initially tested, so he immediately reduced the price for the repair. His pricing is affordable and reasonable. I highly recommend Steve for your AC repairs! read more

I had called Steve a few months ago in order to try to diagnose and repair my AC unit due to a low temperature split, and his immediate diagnosis was that due to a AC compressor issue it would be best to replace the whole outside unit for ~$2600 ($1900+700 parts). As I've already researched the typical cost, I was not stunned by the figure. I eventually got my Home Warranty to cover the repair, but only after taking 4 months of constant repairs because they kept misdiagnosing the issue (#1 Added freon - leaked out, #2 Flushout my lines, nope, #3 replaced the compressor pump - all the coolant leaked out a month later, #4 Finally replaced my whole condensor assembly with a new unit - Voila!). While I still saved money with my Home Warranty, Steve got the diagnosis correct the first time around. I called him again a few months later for my Parents AC unit which was not working right. A Costco HVAC guy had came by a while earlier and said we needed a whole new system for $12,000. Steve said it just needed a hard-start capacitor with the HVAC. So for $150 (parts included), he repaired my parents AC unit and other than a simple blown fuse, its been working great since! I'd highly recommend him. read more

Whenever you have an appliance break down, you immediate thought is 'how long to get it fix' and 'how much am I going to get ripped off'. With something as expensive as HVAC, you are bound to be even more nervous. My previous experience with other HVAC repair places were mostly negative. They overcharge for services and try to completely replace your AC unit. I found Steve from Yelp and was glad that I did. Straightforward answers, arrived on-time, and repair my AC at what I thought was quite reasonable charges. Highly recommended. read more

Need to repair/service your HVAC? Great news, you have found the right company, so stop looking & call Steve at Hempel Air 626-331-4022. I have had so many bad experiences that I am very suspect of anyone doing work in my home. I also had never used Yelp for anything but restaurants, so I was surprised I found such a great company via Yelp. Steve is extremely knowledgeable, thorough, professional, reasonable and prompt. He identified our issues (both heating units needed new circuit boards) , ordered the parts & installed them 1 day after they arrived, fixing both our heaters. The AC hadn't worked in years & last guy said both units were "Toast", so we haven't had AC for a LONG time. Steve identified the issues with the AC & fixed them both, turns out the other guy was simply lazy & greedy! I told Steve he was a magician, he laughed. I'm so happy I found Hempel Air & can't wait to recommend this company! read more

As a property manager for 23 years, I call Steve out about 3 or 4 times a year. He never lets me down. Last month in 112 degree weather, he came out same day and took care of my baking tenants. He is experienced, knowledgeable and the most honest hvac guy you could ask for. read more

I turned to YELP to help me find an a/c repair person. After seeing the ratings and reading the comments, I decided to give Steve a call. I left him a message on Mon (8/29) and he returned my call that same evening. Seeing that our a/c was installed in 1996, I told Steve I felt some freon was needed. Given that we were in the middle of a heat wave that week, he stated that he would not be able to come out until Wednesday, 8/31......understandable. He gave me an approx quote for parts/labor and said he'd be here between 1-2p. Fine. Wednesday arrived and at 11:40a he called and said that he could come early if it was ok, said he could be here within 15-20 mins. He got here at 12n. He checked the filters in the furnace first; cleaned and replaced the ones inside. Then he went to a/c unit and stated that the freon was low. As he charged the unit, he cleaned it. Please do not ask what he cleaned, I could not tell you. As he charging the unit, I was able to feel the difference inside right away. After his services were rendered, he gave me my total.... an amount lower than what he quoted me. When he saw my method of payment, he lowered the amount again!!! Steve lived up to the comments and the ratings that others have posted on here. Extremely satisfied with his service. read more

Of course our AC went out two days before a heatwave. Called Steve from Hempel per a recommendation from my Father-in-law and positive yelp reviews. Two business days later he arrived with Barret and diagnosed the issue. Repaired in an hour and some change. So grateful to be sitting in a cooler house! I highly recommend Steve. He's a no nonsense, honest, get it done kind of guy. read more

Our AC went out on one of the hottest days of the year. After reading the reviews on Yelp we called Steve and he responded immediately. He installed a new unit in a couple of hours at a very reasonable cost. The work was first class, friendly, and met all of our expectations. Without reservation we recommend Steve (and his son) for any AC job. Thanks Steve! read more

I cannot talk about their service because I never received a call back. My A/C had stopped working on Sunday and was blowing out warm air. Didn't know where to look for an A/C repairman so I came onto Yelp. Their company received a lot of great reviews so I thought that I'd give them a call. The first time, the number was busy so could not get through. The second time, I left a voicemail but never receive a call back. With the weather the way it is, I guess they were too busy to not call back...? It has already been 3 days past. Maybe others were lucky to get through, and I was not. read more

this is the 2nd time Steve Hempel has come help us. Both times, Steve has been on time, helpful in explaining whats wrong and what he is fixing. The first time I think he had to help us reset our AC system, not sure as my fiance was the one that called him the first time. This time he helped us with our AC condensation tray and clearing out the drains. All done in less than 30 mins. Very nice guy! We definitely recommend him. read more

Been using these guys for years and they never fail to provide excellent service. Fair, reasonable prices and easy to get an appointment.

Look no further! These guys are the real deal. As with everybody else, I found them through yelp. I have around a 11 year old unit that recently went out. Steve confirmed again with me in the morning for our appointment at 2 pm and his son Jason arrived early at 1:50 pm. He was able to diagnose the problem within 10 minutes or so and explained every step of the way. Halfway through, he suggested we add more freon because he said it was low and wasn't cooling as much as it could be. We measured the temperature before adding the freon and after. Sure enough, he was right and the temperature dropped at least another 8-10 degrees. He worked the entire time he was here and explained as best he could what needed to be changed and why. I got an entire fan motor replaced for $385, and 1.5lb for $40. He also changed 2 of my filters free of charge. Absolutely recommend to anyone who is looking to get their A/C serviced. Thanks again Jason! read more

My air conditioner gave out last week. First I called Service Champion. Some nice looking guy came out and told me that we need a new HVAC!!! $20,000 ! He keeps telling me about his new HVAC system. Our house is 16 years old and in decent shape. Could not believe what he was saying. Called Hempel air based on yelp reviews. They came out and told me it was a blow motor and changed it right away and I am back with air. Very nice and professional too. Thank you!!! read more

Steve was very prompt at getting back to me and was very easy to get an appointment catering to our schedule. The diagnostic/initial visit fee was fair. It counts towards the repair if anything is found. Fortunately for our case no major issue was causing our system to fail and he resolved it very very quickly. Why I gave Hempel Air such a high rating is that in addition to a quick fix Steve made my money worthwhile by inspecting the other components of my HVAC, educating me on how my system works, and tips on maintenance and prevention measures to keep it running when he could have took off to his next appointment. This is a testament to Hempel Air's professionalism and emphasis on customer service. read more

Very happy with installation process, customer service and pricing! Steve always calls back if we've got a question. Good, honest business.

Same issue as Anon had (review below) Hempel came out 3 times and my central air unit has gone down 4 times. Last fix was done by son. He showed up took a look and said " I forgot my tools" I'll have to come back tomorrow." Son never apologized for the inconvenience and didn't seem to want to be there or do the job. My instincts wanted not to go with the job but did any ways and my central air is down again. (Freon leaking from unit) Steve installed a condensate pump in my attic 2013 and it went down this summer of 2015. I found a pinched line that was pinched by a zip tie. It leaked down into my ceiling. 1st job - freon leaking - not fixed. 2nd job - replaced condensation pump - broke year and a half down the line. 3 rd job - freon leaking - not fixed read more

My heater wasn't working so I called Steve for help. He showed up on time and was able to figure out pretty quickly what the problem was. He didn't have the part that he needed to fix the heater, so he had to drive to the warehouse to pick up the part for me. The rate he charged was very reasonable. Overall I was very satisified with his work. If my heater/AC breaks down I will definitely give him my business again. read more

After 2 weeks on waiting on my techs who installed my AC to fix my AC. They gave up and told me I had to buy another AC unit. 5-10k. I decided to get a 2nd opinion. This was during the 2015 heat wave and everybody was busy. Voicemail greetings greeted me a we book for the next 2 weeks message. So I finally dialed Steve with Hempel. He came out the very next day and was able to fix my AC within the hr!! Turns out my knuckle head techs installed the motor the wrong way. Steve charged me $500 for a new motor, labor included. I've also recently used Hempel for my office too. Steve sent his son the next day and we received the same consistently great service too. read more

Steve is as good as it gets, he came out to fix our AC a few weeks ago due to a bad wire and it was not getting a good enough current to the capacitor to get the compressor started. he changed the wires and cleaned the contacts, rewired everything, and he also changed out our air filter and check the freon levels, made sure everything is working as it should. he also advised me that our AC/heating unit is a 22 year old model its working fine, but if anything craps out (he observed our compressor is making a weird pitch) it will have to be replaced altogether, and will be costly. but he said he will do his best to see what can be done to keep the unit running until we are ready to change it out. fast forward to this past weekend, our AC is starting to blow out warm air again i gave hm a call to see when he has time to come check our unit again, he came over at the promised time and earlier, found that it was the same issue, and did the whole repair, changed to a thicker gauge wire and made a new contact to see if it will fix the issue and he did it under warranty and did not charge us a single dime. he did advise that if this happens again he will have to try to route in a transistor or a split wire to try to help prevent the wire from being burnt out again. again, if your around this area, you have any AC/Heating issues you got to give this guy a call. his prices are more than fair and he is heck of a cool guy. read more

Steve and Jason had great comunication and were able to repair the system without any hassels. Highly recomend them.

I called left a voice mail and was called early the next day. Steve was available that day to come over and see why my Air Conditioning was not working. I could not meet that soon and made an appointment the next Saturday morning to meet my timetable. Steve showed up 10 minutes early and then took the time to walk me through the whole process of what he was doing. I had a lot of questions but not once was he irritated with me or condescending. He explained to me the routine maintenance that was needed for the unit and also some tips on how to clean the outside unit to improve efficiency. I have an old unit in the house and he also told me what not to do to reduce the chance of the thermostat breaking and how to get the most out of the unit. Steve quickly found the reason for the AC not working, told me why it happened and how it should be fixed. Steve had all the parts in his vehicle and was quick efficient and respectful. Even asked how he should enter and leave the home. His total time at the house was 45 minutes could have been 20 if I was not pestering him with questions. His price was hundreds of dollars less than others I called. I recommend him without reservation and will contact him in the future for any additional work that I need. read more
