Croquettes (Starter included in 4-course dinner (~€58))
Aya E.

Ordered: Bottle of Rosé (~€35): Vin de Pays du Var, Pinchinat, Provence, FR 2020 4-course dinner (~€58) -Starter: three croquettes of red paprika, saffron and Puy lentils, with chervil mayonnaise and mixed herb salad -Main course: pan fried North Sea haddock fillet with mussels and mussel-saffron sauce, la ratte potatoes and celery fennel salad -Cheeses: three Dutch cheeses with fig bread -Dessert - 1) Hemelse Modder: dark and white chocolate mousse with vanilla cream and 2) Tartelette filled with vanilla cream, marinated strawberries and verveine syrup, with meringue and strawberry sorbet Aya's take: A true Dutch meal! Hemelse Modder offers different options ranging from a 3-course to 5-course menu. Service was a bit slow (according to my American standard) but you can tell they really focus on the experience and make everything as it is ordered. The Croquettes had exceptional flavors and the saffron and lentils was a really unique factor. The Haddock Filet was cooked well along with the mussels and mussel-saffron sauce. Again, the inclusion of saffron was genius and somehow worked so well here. I didn't care for the cheese dish honestly; a lot of them were too pungent for my taste. The desserts however were exceptional! We each got a different dessert so we can share and let me say both were amazing. The Hemelse Modder (literally their name) is a must. The mousse melts in your mouth and the balance between dark and white chocolates was divine. The Tartelette was also delicious with one of the best strawberry sorbets I've ever had. If you're looking for an elevated Dutch meal, this could be it!

Chef's daily selection appetizer. White fish with fresh radishes, crema, and onion bits.

First off, the food here is excellent. You should know that there isn't really any a la carte ordering, but you can mix and match the menu as either 3, 4, or 5 courses. My friend and I had the three course menu and enjoyed it immensely. My appetizer was perfect and I absolutely loved it. My main dish had fish that could've been cooked slightly better and vegetables that could've been seasoned slightly better, but it was still excellent. Finally, the mousse for dessert was fantastic. All fresh, seasonal ingredients and attentive service. I find it a bit ridiculous that they are charging for tap water when you're paying around 40-50€ per person. Additionally, while striving to deliver a fine dining experience, they missed the mark on a couple points. Their silverware settings are incorrect, and they did not bring out new silverware after taking our silverware away for one of the courses. They also brought our dessert twice which was a bit of a disruption. These are nit picky things, but my reviews have to be more nit picky when trying to distinguish between fine dining experiences. At this price, almost nothing should be amiss, in my opinion.

This was our first visit to Amsterdam and we wanted to try authentic Dutch food. Our Hotel recommended Hemelse Modder. Food was fresh and the experience was great; Service was excellent. Everything on the menu looked good. Ambiance was also excellent. Highly recommended.

Menu for modern European food

Modern European food, very nice and romantic restaurant. The name of the restaurant means "Heavenly Mud" in Dutch. This place is a farm to table restaurant, you can opt for a set menu or pick items from the regular menu. Every local customer left with a jar of "heavenly mud" it look like some kind of soil fertilizer. The lady in charge was nice enough to offer a table while the restaurant was fully booked for the evening. The place is located within walking distance from the main train station in Amsterdam and it is not "out of the way" or difficult to find", use the Yelp walk options and it will ate you there. Every dish was delicious and I would definitely go back.

I loved this place. What a hidden gem. It wasn't busy when I got there (8 pm) and it was a Saturday...which I thought was rather odd. Regardless, it was very good. The menu was rather difficult to read...not because it wasn't in English...but because I haven't heard of a lot of the unique food they had. The certain type of fowl was wonderful, and the lamb rillettes were also good. Of course the desert was amazing (as it should be). The waiter was very friendly and very attentive. It's also in a quiet area of the city...not super touristy.

This is off the recommendation of our hotel concierge. Went to Hemelse Modder for dinner. The reviews on yelp sounds fabulous with it describing as modern European. Nice to see they are known for their farm to table concept. Stepping in, we could tell it had a very clean, yet inviting warm vibe. We ordered and chosen off their 3 course menu and was able to mix and match between their regular and special menu. I had to cod fillet with vegetables and potatoes. I didn't want the parsley crust and was so glad to chef could accommodate. My wife got the rack of lamb which was cooked to perfection. For appetizer, I got the Dutch shrimp with salad while she got the breast duck. Both were just in awe and went down smoothly. The presentation is top notch. For dessert, I got their house special dark chocolate mousse and she got raspberry tart with vanilla ice cream. Both hit the spot. My 11 years old son ordered a la carte and got French fries for 4 euro and fried haddock. Both did not disappoint. Highly recommended and the wait staffs are extremely hard working and appreciative. Lastly, free wifi.

Unique and cherished dining experience at Hemelse Modder. We enjoyed both vegetarian and meat options from the regular menu and a special anniversary menu. The staff was wonderfully helpful and guided us through the menu and wine pairing. Highly recommend for a unique experience

Myself and my friends had a great meal here on our first night in Amsterdam. The restaurant is recommended in the Lonely Planet guide but this doesn't always mean its going to be great. However, I had a look at the menu on the internet and was impressed with what I saw. The name of the restaurant literally translates as Heavenly Mud - a reflection on the emphasis placed on organic, seasonal produce. It was pouring with rain when we arrived so this restaurant was a real haven from the elements. The decour is modern and light and we received a warm welcome from the waiters which was a pleasant surprise as the Dutch front-of house staff have a reputation for being quite stando-offish which we would definitely experience later in our trip. The restaurant offers three menus: the al la carte menu, a three course set menu and a seasonal set menu. My four friends all chose the standard set menu and I went for the seasonal July menu as I loved the idea that the dishes were designed around produce in season and available from the local farmers. We were given olives and beautiful fresh bread when we sat down. My starter was fillet of red mullet with sorrel sauce - beautifully cooked so that it retained its moisture and full of flavour. Main course was a whole trout served with cockles, beetroot and potato celery cream. The trout was very tasty but extremely filling, I couldn't quite clear my plate. My pudding was incredible - blackcurrant tart with lavender ice cream. The tart was bursting with flavour and the ice cream subtle enough to compliment it beautifully. Also a hit was the signature pudding, the Hemelse Modder, which was a milk and white chocolate mouse. My two friends who sampled this saying it was one of the best puddings that they had ever eaten. All this was washed down with a couple of bottles of Chenin Blanc which was delightful. Hemelse Modder was originally established in 1984, the fact that they have been in operation for over 25 years speaks volume for the quality of the food and service. Its a little pricy but everything is in Amsterdam. At least here you feel like your are getting value for money.

This restaurant was an awesome little find. The service was very attentive and she helped us navigate the Dutch wine list to find a good wine. The menu has three and four course meals. The appetizers were very good. During a warm Amsterdam summer night the chilled summer soup (gazpacho really) was great on a warm night. We both ordered the duck, which was amazing. We walked out from a three nice course feeling satisfied but not overly full. The terrace looked inviting had it not been raining. Very cozy and quaint. Highly recommended. This is a good spot away from the busy streets and crowds for a nice meal.

Pickled salmon was a perfect starter :)

Great place! Three courses of excellent food for about 33 euro. The service was great - very attentive waiters, who provided great wine recommendations. The interior was very simple and slightly rustic in a cool way. "Only" 4 stars because a slightly chewy sirloin steak, they didn't ask us how we wanted our steaks cooked and because of an extremely bitter side dish of the steak. We would like to return in order to taste their signature dish - heavenly mud!

This (25year old) restaurant Heavenly Mud is a real taste experience. The food is awesome, the service is superb. If you are looking for something good, which aint big and much crowed. You should go there, it's worth every penny. Three-course 29,50 euro. English site availible see link.

What an authentic place this is! The waiter was smoking a cigarette outside when we passed by and asked about the place. His friendliness and the nice name of the place made us decide to go inside. And it was worth it. The atmosphere is relaxed, but I would have chosen different lighting, although it is not disturbing. I would really recommend to go for the wine suggestions. The waiter presented the wines as if he was just there yesterday to select them. Nice details about the regions the wine came from. But not as most sommeliers do, but just as this relaxed guy who enjoyed great wines. He makes you really feel a guest. Anyway, food was great, but with four courses, I didn't make it till desert. I have to come back for just one course and desert, because I really have to try the 'hemelse modder', their chocolate desert.

The food was good but nothing that amazed. It took 2.5 hours for 3 courses. The desert was the best part of the meal.

We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.

We did not have one but they were happy to seat the 2 of us and invited us to switch tables once another couple left (they were checking out). Small space, can accommodate groups of 2-4, cozy atmosphere, lots of the traditional blue and white ceramics on the wall (dishes and tiles). Traditional Dutch cuisine: we ordered the Boerenkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and Zuurkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and a slice of apple pie to share for dessert. The food arrived piping hot in about 20 minutes. It was sooo delicious--the tasty juicy sausage pairs perfectly the mashed potatoes with either sauerkraut or kale. The apple pie was also tasty--larger chunks of apple and more spices less sugar than American apple pie from what I can tell. Perfect with whipped cream. A must visit if you're in Amsterdam and want to try traditional fare. Highly recommended!

Located on the Rozengracht, it's super central and easy to get to from just about anywhere in the Jordaan or the Center. * The Atmosphere: It's dark, moody, and has a very cool "late-night" energy. Even if you aren't sure what it is from the street, the vibe inside is unmistakable. * The Food: If you like meat, this is your spot. The burgers are massive and juicy, and the ribs literally fall off the bone. * The Vibe: It's a bit louder and more energetic than a standard restaurant, making it perfect for a night out with a group or a casual date with great cocktails. It gets incredibly busy, so even though it feels like a "hidden" spot from the outside, you'll definitely want to book a table ahead of time. Overall: A total neighborhood win. Don't make the mistake of walking past it for as long as I did!

We entered and seated ourselves, and within 5 minutes, a staff person greeted us, brought us a flask of tap water (tastes great and clean) and two glasses, and gave us menus. We ordered a short rib sandwich for him and a chicken Caesar sandwich for me. These come à la carte but you can add sides if you want. I was glad we didn't because the portion was generous. One thing I've noticed here is that the bread is always high quality--our sandwiches came in baguettes about 8 inches long --I had to cut mine in half to eat it lol. Both were savory and flavorful and satisfying. The meat was tender and well seasoned. We savored every bite! They both had crispy bacon in them as well. Very filling! Just what we needed to energize us after our morning at Keukenhof!
