Probably the Bike capital of... San Antonio, Helotes Bicycle is this small shop within a historic building tended by the coolest guy ever. I prefer to have my bike worked on by him out of any other bike shop in San Antonio. He doesn't stiff you with bogus fees, he changes my tires and has me pay only for the supplies. On other fixes he is reasonable and hes someone you just enjoy talking too and getting information out of. Because its just him, I'm sure hes not as speedy as other shops, but its still quality work. Ive never had to wait more than 3 days for an overall (brake lines, shifters, and new tires.) If your looking for a place to ride start at his shop and ride up to the scenic loop, its gorgeous.

Hank Bicycle Master Mechanic and owner of Helotes Bicycle

Hank at Helotes Bicycles is the best. He has been working in the bicycling industry for decades. He isn't just a repair man he is a collector and shop owner. He used to work from some major bicycle component companies. He knows his stuff! So He's the only one I'll take my bike to in San Antonio. The shop reminds me of my grandpa's workshop... messy, clutter but you better not touch anything because the old man knows where everything it. As example I was redoing a classic cruiser and had some issues with the rear wheel Hank suggested I change the rear cog to a larger one.... he said hold on.... a few minutes later he brought an old one that looks like it's been sitting in this build for 20 years. Yes it was used but this was a old bike so it was perfect. I usually call the shop first to see when the best time to bring in a repair is because space is limited that this little shop is one busy shops around. Tip: Be ready to do business outside on the porch as there isn't much room to stand inside. This place has character oozing out of every corner, it's messy goodness. They once were a specialized brand dealer but as hank put it "They took a look at my shop and I didn't fit there image"..... That's ok with me. If you are looking for a trendy bike shop where everyone is dressed in Spandex and ready to sell you anything and finance a bike for up then this is not where you go. Prices are good: I recently had the bottom bracket worked on and it only cost me $15!

Hank knows bikes. More of a museum of great bikes of the past. True bike mechanic and not a 'technician'. Old world skills and knowledge.

As soon as we walked in into the bike area, we were greeted right away by Henry. Henry was just a great guy. Super nice, really knowledgeable and helpful. He even helped me tie them down in my truck without even asking. Great customer service! Now we did go right when they opened on a Sunday, so it was not busy. I recommend doing the same if you want to get the same attention and help I got. I'm sure they still give good customer service either way but I can't verify that myself. They had everything we needed to start our biking journey. The only negative thing I will say, the helmets were super expensive. They had many colors and options but I didn't want to spend $100+ on a helmet that seemed to be the same quality/materials as any standard helmet. Wish they had other cheaper options for helmets. Also the glove selection was not the greatest. Given that everything else that was so great, these two small complaints aren't too big of a deal. If your looking to get into biking, come here! You won't regret it.

Extremely Disappointing Experience -- Damaged a Well-Maintained Vintage Bike…read more I brought my 40-year-old vintage bike -- which had been meticulously maintained for decades and was in excellent condition -- to this shop because of a stuck nut on the rear wheel. Instead of addressing the issue or replacing just the axle (which I clearly requested), they insisted the entire wheel had to be replaced. Reluctantly, I agreed. After the replacement, I noticed that the freewheel was visibly oscillating, which was never an issue before. When I brought the bike back, their response was dismissive -- claiming the problem was simply due to the bike being "bad quality." That was completely false and insulting, considering the bike's proven condition and history. I even brought a replacement axle and asked them to reinstall the original wheel (which I had marked), but instead of fixing anything, they just said they'd give me the old wheel back -- without doing the work. To support the fact that this is a well-maintained, quality bike, I've uploaded photos of the original purchase receipt from 1986 and the owner's manual -- not many people keep those for 40 years. This bike has never had a scratch and ran flawlessly until this visit. At best, this was unprofessional and careless. At worst, it was dishonest. They ignored my request, pushed unnecessary work, introduced a new mechanical problem, and then refused to restore the bike to its original state. This shop wasted my time, money, and damaged a bike I cared deeply about. I strongly advise others to stay away, especially if you value your bike and expect respect and transparency.
