Hank knows bikes. More of a museum of great bikes of the past. True bike mechanic and not a 'technician'. Old world skills and knowledge.

This place is a scam/disappointment. We have showed up 3 times in a week, different days, different times per the businesses posted hours. Nobody answers the door (after loud knocking) or bothers to return a phone call. Don't waste your time, find a legit bike shop!!! App forces for a 1 star otherwise I would give "0" stars!!! read more

Like to save money? Use this shop. Seriously, folks, when I asked how much I owed him after he changed some components on my bike he said "5 bucks". Is there somehow a time rift back to 1990 at this old run-down shop?? I gladly handed him a 10 and said keep the change!( And I'm really cheap I don't do that very often!) Any other store would have been much higher not to mention he did it there on the spot. Hank has about 40+ years of experience working on bikes and if you are an avid biker he has many cool stories from his days. He fixes the bike right there on the front porch. hIghly recommended!! Very fair pricing !! read more

Hank has worked on every bike I've had since 1984. I've been there when other shops call him for tech assistance and support. He is the most knowledgeable mechanic I know. read more

Probably the Bike capital of... San Antonio, Helotes Bicycle is this small shop within a historic building tended by the coolest guy ever. I prefer to have my bike worked on by him out of any other bike shop in San Antonio. He doesn't stiff you with bogus fees, he changes my tires and has me pay only for the supplies. On other fixes he is reasonable and hes someone you just enjoy talking too and getting information out of. Because its just him, I'm sure hes not as speedy as other shops, but its still quality work. Ive never had to wait more than 3 days for an overall (brake lines, shifters, and new tires.) If your looking for a place to ride start at his shop and ride up to the scenic loop, its gorgeous. read more

Helotes Bicycle - Antiques Near Me - Helotes, Texas

Hank is awesome. I went there during the Summer of COVID-19. All bicycle shops are absolutely slammed. He worked with me to set up a drop off date and tried to get it fixed and tuned for me right away vs a 2 month wait at other shops. I think I paid $30 total to get everything bent back into place and tuned up. Awesome service, awesome value, and an awesome character. read more

Hank at Helotes Bicycles is the best. He has been working in the bicycling industry for decades. He isn't just a repair man he is a collector and shop owner. He used to work from some major bicycle component companies. He knows his stuff! So He's the only one I'll take my bike to in San Antonio. The shop reminds me of my grandpa's workshop... messy, clutter but you better not touch anything because the old man knows where everything it. As example I was redoing a classic cruiser and had some issues with the rear wheel Hank suggested I change the rear cog to a larger one.... he said hold on.... a few minutes later he brought an old one that looks like it's been sitting in this build for 20 years. Yes it was used but this was a old bike so it was perfect. I usually call the shop first to see when the best time to bring in a repair is because space is limited that this little shop is one busy shops around. Tip: Be ready to do business outside on the porch as there isn't much room to stand inside. This place has character oozing out of every corner, it's messy goodness. They once were a specialized brand dealer but as hank put it "They took a look at my shop and I didn't fit there image"..... That's ok with me. If you are looking for a trendy bike shop where everyone is dressed in Spandex and ready to sell you anything and finance a bike for up then this is not where you go. Prices are good: I recently had the bottom bracket worked on and it only cost me $15! read more

Helotes Bicycle - Hank Bicycle Master Mechanic and owner of Helotes Bicycle - Antiques Near Me - Helotes, Texas

If I could put 0 stars I would. Hank may be a wonderful bike mechanic, but he is a very rude and mean salty man. At a recent "Helotes Market days" he screamed at a local vendor who had unknowing parked in his driveway. Instead of politely asking her to move, he screamed and cursed her. I felt absolutely astonished by his actions. I am a new member to this community and a avid biker and I have a jogging stroller that also requires maintenance from a bike shop, but I would never ever put a dime in this mans pocket for how awful he treated this young lady. She politely moved her car and asked that he stop yelling at her, to which he replied "just move your f@&$):g car". And began calling the other vendors and this lady "g0)&$@n gypsies". What an awful man. I was visiting the downtown area to cheer on a friend at the running race. And I happened to come across the market set up. I also noticed his shop. He could use the market days as an advertising opportunity instead of being mean and sour about the whole situation! read more

Just stopped by the best bike repair place in Helotes and San Antonio. Even better, the best owner, person. So friendly, and even learned a little bit about the historic shop! Thank you for taking care of me today!! read more

My bike broke down about a mile north of Helotes Bicycle yesterday on a ride home. I still had 20 miles to go. I walked it to Helotes Bicycle and Hank didn't have what it took to repair it at the time so he gave me a very nice loaner bike to make it the rest of the way home. I returned the next day and he had my bike ready to go at a RIDICULOUSLY reasonable price. I would say this is the best customer service in town by a mile. read more

On 9/9/17 (sorry for the late review but it has lasted the entire year!)we purchased a bike from Walmart and brought it here to be assembled. He did a wonderful job and we've had no problems with it! Don't let anyone else work on your bike!! read more

Got to meet Hank this weekend, and I've gotta say, that is one cool dude who really loves what he does! I would disregard the post that was in no way relevant to the man's business practice (market days gypsies... LOL). I would be upset if vendors were disrupting my potential flow of business too! (After all, once a vendor parks, it's going to be quite a while before they leave) I would not describe Hank as "salty", but more along the lines of "salt of the earth" kind of guy. I say support your local businesses and go pay ole' Hank a visit! read more

This guys is a badass. Set up my Raleigh in a couple hours and didnt over charge me. Would totally recommend.

I went to Helotes Bicycle as my main repair shop for over a decade. Hank is a top-notch mechanic - I have seen him fix dented frames and true up wheels that other bike shops dismissed out of hand. If you have a bicycle that needs any kind of work, you should check with Hank. His rates are reasonable and his work is without peer; the only thing you should keep in mind is that he is almost always busy and it's a one-man shop. If your repair is complex and needs to be done in an hour, he may not be able to help you out. But if you can leave it with him after getting an estimate, you will not be disappointed. Another Yelp commenter mentioned that there are bikes there that are not chained up. Don't worry about it. 10+ years of leaving my bikes with him and there was never a problem. No thefts, no damage, just bikes returned in better shape than I dropped them off in. read more

I talked to Hank a great while and wanted to gather as much knowledge as I could before leaving him to get back upstairs to deep work. I hope he does not retire anytme soon. read more

Hank is an icon of bike repair. After decades of service, you will find bikes antique and new strewn about haphazardly, but Hank knows where everything is. If he is busy, don't expect a social visit, but your bike will be right for a fair price. If you are a "techno-rider", consider Brittons. read more

I have been in need of service for my jogging strollers twice now and have come to Helotes Bicycle. He is very honest and sweet, and takes care of what I need quickly! I will always come back for any bicycle needs!! read more

I've known Hank close to 20 years. I visit his shop when I am restoring one of my bikes and need a hard to find part. If he does not have it in his shop, he will get it. You have to be patient, because he is always busy. But he will make time for you and help you in whatever you need. I love his shop, reminds me of my dad's, but he knows where everything is at. read more

The owner is very rude. I witnessed him verbally berating a lady over a parking spot during a recent market days. He was shouting profanities at her as she offered to move her vehicle. I for one would never do business with this man. read more
