Fantastic Park. I was surprised to find that it is connected to a neighborhood, has a YMCA, and has many paved trails. That would be very good for strollers, small children and biking. Immediately upon entering OP Schnabel Park I see trees, canopy after canopy of trees. It was hot for a Saturday morning. What helped keep the sun off us is the cover and shade provided by the magnitude of trees that create an arch over the walking trails. If walking isn't your vibe, bring your bike! Dogs are welcome on a leash too. There's a covered playground for the kiddos, and the playsets are plastic, not metal We brought a packed lunch to enjoy in the park. it was a beautiful day, there was just enough breeze to keep us comfortable. This park has two play sets one for younger kids and one for older kids. it's also completely covered for shade which is so nice in the warmer months. My kids love this park, our only complaint is there aren't enough swings! We love that after the kids get some energy out playing we can all go on a nice walk through the paved trails which are also pretty shady thanks to the trees! read more

This park is amazing! There are actually a few parks that are connected by a continuous trail but I began my journey at this one. The trails are very well kept, directional signs are everywhere and most of the trails are under the shade of trees. There was so much to take in, I ended up doing 6 miles! I ventured off the paved trails in hopes to see some of the wildlife I had read others talk about. I wasn't disappointed! There was even a little pond that people were fishing out of. This was definitely worth the drive for me and I will be back to explore more of it! read more

Beautiful park with lots of trails. Cliff views, and lots of space and gathering points.

For running or walking, the terrain at OP Schnabel varies from flat, wide concrete paths to overgrown steep and rocky trails. You really have a choice of workouts when you get here. I have seen deer on almost every visit. One time I actually had to shoo the deer off the path to get by. As an example, here are some of my visits: * A 1 mile walk on the easy concrete path with my wife, while we took deer pictures. * A 13 mile training run - started in the park, then down onto the Leon Creek trail system for the distance * A 4 mile off-road run with 300 vertical feet over boulders and roots, with some pavement here and there to connect it all. This park is really nice, super clean. I love that they have parking at each picnic table/ grill area. It's convenient. Tons of wildlife was spotted here, we actually got super close to a deer which was cool. It was a great area to go bird watching if you wanted too. There's also tons of trails that connect to this one, about three to choose from. Lots of people riding bikes, very family friendly. Sadly, we didn't get to see the river flowing this time, it was dry as a crisp but still worth seeing! read more

OP is a very beautiful park, it has paved and unpaved trails. It is nice to walk here because it offers a lot of shade. I used this park mostly for bike riding since I just started to ride a bike again and I am excited to explore the mountain bike trails. It is also connected to Leon Creek Greenway, One time I rode from OP to Military Drive Trailhead, it is a little over 16 miles both ways. They also have pavillions inside the park and a lot of benches along the path. This is one of my favorite parks in San Antonio! read more

Every park has its pros and cons, or should I say trade-offs. While one location may offer one thing you value, it might lack it in other things. No park can be everything for everyone. Having said that if you're looking for a location to get some exercise be it running, walking or biking OP Schnabel Park is the place for you. Firstly, whatever this park lacks in basic amenities like a bigger playground for children, limited restroom facilities and areas for family outings (they do have two pavillion spaces for reservations) it makes up for it with a set of small and long winding pathways; punctuated by breathtaking glimpses of nature. For example while jaunting with a walking buddy the sounds of nature were in full bloom with trees, birds chirping and of course the presence of wandering deer. There are paved and non-paved terrains both meant for the most strident biker or hiker. While the paved areas are accessible for the disabled, I saw people with baby strollers implementing them into their exercise regime. As you move through the pathways they either level off, elevate, go uphill or downhill. No sooner do you arrive at one end only to discover it merging into a completely different walkway. Since the trails are vast it has the capability to break up the monotony of anyone's exercise routine. There are maps even markers onto the side that act as guides. The park is very user friendly. The more you use it the better you can create a fitness regime that works for you. While I do like this park I did leave with some critiques. 1.) Along the park there are signs that encourage walkers and bikers alike to be respectful of each other's space. And for the most part I have seen a common courtesy extended on both ends. However my concern is that there are a few overzealous bikers who feel the need to speed downhill as though it were the "Tour De France." I was almost mowed down by a herd of bikers, with the spandex shorts and the helmets from Tron. There is absolutely no reason to be going 20 miles an hour down these narrow walkways with walkers/joggers going at a slower pace. 2.) At night there is not enough lighting throughout the park which at least for me, raises safety concerns. I implore you to take a walking buddy or better yet form a running or bicycling group. Safety in numbers. 3.) In the near future I hope they consider connecting paths, or winding a few that lead you better to the main parking areas. Sometimes the distance seems much further than when you started. By segwaying trails it can alleviate that feeling that you have wandered nowhere or are lost. Either way I really like this park, with its intricate walkways that lead you throughout the park. If you enjoy doing your daily exercise regime in a natural setting, you will appreciate this park. There are not many places in the city where a biker with Tom Petty is blaring loudly , while a cardinal is flying by. read more

This is a wonderful park!! Very clean, lots of shade, not too crowded, has a big parking lot. Close to YMCA. I have spotted wandering deer twice which was amazing tbh. Plenty of shade provides a very calming atmosphere for your hike. Hiking paths are mostly paved. They have shaded picnic tables and a decent sized playground. They have water fountains and benches along the trails too which I have rarely seen. People working out by the playground in the mornings and evenings. read more

This is a really nice park. Well kept and family friendly. I brought my family here to enjoy the outdoors while playing some Pokémon Go (this was during the Pokémon Go craze). The only reason we discovered this park was because it seemed prime for Pokémon Go. This park is huge and has lots of nice trails. The park was filled with lots of families participating in various activities. This seems to be the spot for summer family fun. There is a pool, trails and fields. Thanks to a video game, I have discovered our family friendly neighborhood park. read more

OP Schnabel Park is a jewel along the fast growing Bandera Road corridor. It's a park where acres and acres of trees and plant life are protected from development. There are miles and miles of walking trails, picnic areas, a playground, and covered pavillion. Keep a watch for wildlife, on my last visit I saw wild Quail! read more

Long in the making, I've seen this place develop slowly but nicely. I believe that mr Schnabel would be honored by this parks appeal. He was inspired by the cleanest cities in Germany, and wanted San Antonio to be as clean and beautiful. This park receives a lot of maintenance and improvements that all parks should hope for. It started off as motorcycle and bicycle trails that were maintained by weekend warriors who wanted a nice place to ride. Local neighborhoods provided the first hikers and explorers who maintained the appearance. YMCA and the City of San Antonio provided the civilized attributes. Now the park is a part of a beautiful stretch of city parks connected by vascular trails and paved paths. Go to this park for practically any outdoor land based park activity, but... KEEP IT BEAUTIFUL! read more

Ok so YES, I did geo-caching here and NO I haven't gotten all of them - mostly because this park is spread out fairly well and many of the caches require bushwhacking. Butttttt... it's also a great place to picnic, work out, ride the bike trails, play basketball, rollerblade or just hang out. The only thing I don't like about it is there's a YMCA location within the park and you have to pass it by at the main entrance. The road gets clogged and congested easy and if you're in a hurry to leave, you might be caught in some minor traffic on your way out of this joint. It's kept up with though. And there are other trailheads and other areas to park but you just have to know where they're located at (one of the trailheads is located behind a Wal-Mart & an apartment complex on Bandera) but I didn't know about it until months after. read more

O.P. Schnabel Park is a large park that offers a YMCA, ball fields, a trail system, a basketball court, pavilions, and a play area. This park is perfect for a leisurely afternoon or a bumpy bike ride, depending on your energy level. I went to OP Schnabel Park the first time to ride my mountain bike and was pretty impressed with the trail system. This park doesn't offer the extensive trails that Breckenridge does, but still provides enough for an hour or so of riding. There are a few trails that are paved and are perfect for walking or a leisurely bike ride. Past that, there are trails that are dirt and lead deeper into the woods. I was a little too timid to go "off-roading" (the entrance to the dirt trails was at a pretty steep angle) the first time I was there, but I am excited to try the dirt trails as some point. This park also has plenty of areas to just relax or enjoy outdoor recreation. Most of the park is covered in dense trees and cactus -we are in Texas, after all-- but some of the ball fields are usually open if you want to play soccer or throw a Frisbee. I've even come a few times to sit outside the YMCA and read or eat. One of the advantages of this park is that is it a decent size, so you can easily find parking and an area for yourself. This park is probably the best and largest park in NW San Antonio and a great place to spend an afternoon. There are tons of trees that offer shade and plenty of things to do to keep you busy and active. read more

Love this park! It's so beautiful! There are deer often around, who don't scatter to easy either. The trails here, which there are quite a few are great. Short trails and long trails, for bikeing, walking or running, and even dog walking, there a trail for everyone, you just gotta know which one to take lol. There is one trail that will take you to the mainland trailhead by the mainland Walmart, doesn't take long at all. A few parts of the trails do get flooded when we have a lot of rain. There is a playground of course and a nice one at that, as well as basketball court and everything a good park should have. Oooo did I mention the pic nic table area is all covered! It's a cool little park with the YMCA located on the grounds. One of my main issues with this park is that the so-called "handicap accessible" paths were not at all handicap friendly, in my opinion. There were some areas where the road had totally eroded. Now, we were just pushing a baby stroller around during our walk but even that was a bit of a challenge in some areas. The particular area that I speak of was the back path that ran along the housing. This park just looks a bit rundown. It could definitely use some sprucing up. The trees/plants spill over the pathways and you could easily get lost with the limited trail mapping and directions. Don't come after the sun goes down or before it comes up because some areas can be a little sketchy. read more

I've made several trips here, but this is my first review. This is a great hidden gem, as I am finding the best walking trails in the city are! You could drive down Bandera Rd and pass this and never have any idea what you're missing! There is also a YMCA as you drive into the area and also some softball/baseball fields in the area. It's part of the Leon Springs greenway project so it's a very long walking path that goes in many different directions. So you can make your journey as long as you'd like! I always have to remember, the further I venture out that I have to walk all the way back! Pup friendly, but please remember to clean up after your pooch! Or at least don't let them poop on the sidewalk! GROSS! Also, family friendly, just be aware you will share the road with cyclists and joggers. Stay to the right when walking and you'll be fine! There are some nature trails, being that this is a very nice tree lined area. I haven't been brave enough to try them yet though! I have also seen occasionally park patrolmen, which is nice and makes me feel safe. As others have mentioned, watch where you walk, when the path narrows there may be "rugged" areas with cracks and chunks missing from the walkway. But by all means get out there and see the trees and the sun and the sky and get your walk on! My doggie and I also recently on a chilly morning saw 4 deer just calmly watching us and then darting across the path ahead of us. My dog had never seen deer before and had no idea what to think!! The best thing for me about this park, is it's about a 5 minute drive from my house! Enjoy! read more

Afternoon walk in the park, our first time here as we are new to this side of town. Trails have a variety of levels, from smoothly paved to rough natural terrain. Saw loads of deer, even along the paved trails. We were about 1/2 mile in when it occurred to me that there probably were plenty of geocaches along the way. I opened my geocache app and we were .2 miles from a level one basic. I gave my husband a crash course in geocaching and off the trail we went. NOW we were in fun terrain, holding branches out of the way, ducking under limbs, using branches to balance as you climb or descend. Great fun. We found the cache and decided this will become a regular thing, exploring all areas of the park. Beautiful ball fields, basketball courts, playscapes and many spots to have a picnic. Great park, worth checking out. read more

Lovely park. The YMCA is right near the entrance off of Bandera. It seems well maintained, but I haven't used them yet. The park though is great. There is a pavilion that I've been to multiple gatherings at. There is always a police presence, which keeps me feeling safe. The kid's play area is safe and clean. The restrooms are well cared for also. Definitely a lovely park. read more

I love this park. It's my go to for a lot of reasons. I like that it's quieter and it has several different routes to go down. It's not to far from where I live but most important is that my kids really enjoy it. The playground I decent and the woods area is a fun spot to explore in case they get bored. There's even a little teepee that someone built that all the kids like to play in now. It's dog and kid friendly. Just be careful with the bikers they are pretty fast and hardcore when it comes to the path. Don't get hit now. Bring plenty of water and always watch out for your surroundings. There is also a YMCA in this area and a the pool. read more

I've been going to OP Schnabel since 2001 or so. It's always been one of my favorite, "hidden" parks in town! I've seen it grow by building the bike trails and I've even done a few basura bash waterway clean ups at the park. read more

Took a quick trip down memory lane a little earlier by visiting OP. My kids used to play baseball through the YMCA when they were younger. Can't tell you how many Saturday mornings and afternoons our family spent behind the backstop cheering on my son and daughter. Since it's not baseball season my daughter and I watched the last part of a soccer game . . . probably 6-8-year-olds. The coaches yelling out instructions to the players while the parents sat in their lawn chairs, encouraging their young players. It's good to see people still keeping their children active and not just staying home and not doing anything together. My children are 18 and 21 now. Those days are long gone, but I hope there will always be facilities and fields like the ones available at OP to encourage an active childhood and family togetherness. read more

I'm not sure how I feel about this trail system. It's great for being one with nature, but running with a friend is a definite must (ideally a friend that also knows the trails). I could see how this trail could be a safety issue since I didn't find too many other runners or bikers on it even at 830am on a Saturday. Not only could you sprain your ankle and have a ways to get back, but there are plenty of places that creeps could hide at (though I didn't actually see any). I ended up making a couple of small loops around the park since I didn't want to overcommit myself or get lost and end up having to run a half marathon or something. I wish there were more trail maps! read more

If you're into hiking but prefer the bunny trails, the OP Schnabel Park is the place for you. This park has something for everyone when it comes to bipedal propulsion. Whether you prefer the ground underfoot to be paved or not, OP Schnabel can accommodate. There really is a lot more here than you might realize from the outside. The trails are actually quite extensive and, surprisingly, well maintained. There are restrooms strategically placed about the park and those not proficient in their land navigations skills, signage to point you in the right direction should you become disoriented. As a coworker stated, as the sun sets you begin to see more and more wildlife. As the pictures can attest, deer are not an uncommon sight. However, as it got darker, the trails began to feel a tad ominous. It would be my recommendation to be out of the park before full on sunset. In all, this is a great park filled with joggers, hikers, bicycle riders, and a few sketchy looking individuals looking as though they're preparing to engage in mopery. Park access is quite easy from Bandera off Hwy 1604 but I'd suggest avoiding rush hour unless you enjoy that sort of thing. read more

O.P. Schnabel is a bikers/hikers paradise. The park has both paved and natural trails and there are even water fountains along the way. Located off of busy Bandera Road, it's hard to imagine that such a peaceful and tranquil place is nearby. I hadn't been here in several years, but came recently for my little brother's baseball game in the fields. I didn't even know that they also had soccer fields, basketball courts, picnic areas, and a swimming pool with a freakin' water slide. There's also a huge pavilion area that can be rented out for parties and whatnot. This is a really great park for people of all ages and interests. I did have to deduct a star because of the absolutely disgusting bathrooms. I know it's a park but, well, I won't even go into the monstrosities that I witnessed. read more

This park is so nice. The trails are great! Lots of different options depending on what you're doing. Throughout the drive there is a lot of picnic tables where you can park your car and have a picnic! Two large basketball courts! The only reason I gave it 3 stars was because of the park for the kiddos. It was ALL metal so it made it really hard for my son to enjoy it in the scorching Texas heat. The only reason we came here was to try the park and when he couldn't play on it, we tried out the trails and had a picnic instead. Pretty disappointed. Very unlikely I will be back unless it's colder outside. read more
