When I moved into my fourth floor walkup in April it was the first time I didn't have a father or boyfriend with me to help me move. So I turned to craigslist (ughh). The site is sketchy to say the least, so I was pleasantly surprised when two normal, friendly, and helpful guys showed up and moved me into my apt in record time. I've used them twice since then and they are always available last minute and for the cheapest rates I've seen. I joke with my friends that Barry is like my NYC rent-a-dad. I got a great deal on two couches on Craigslist, but the seller wanted them out by the next morning - and it was already 8 p.m. Barry was the fourth mover advertised on Craigslist who I called, and was the cheapest by a large margin (and didn't complain about the late notice like some of the others). He showed up early, moved the couches with no problem, and was friendly and easy to work with. Price was as quoted (hourly rate) and he didn't even charge us for the ride out there, just the ride back, even though he picked up my husband at our apartment and drove him out to the pickup spot so he wouldn't have to take the subway. I've worked with a lot of (terrible) movers in New York City and was dreading dealing with another, but Barry is the nicest guy and it was an easy and pleasant move. If I ever have to move something again, he'll be the first person I'll call. p.s. I was worried that the couches wouldn't fit in his truck; I had bought a large three-seater and a two-seater. After we agreed upon the time and rate, the mover flaked and cancelled on me few hours before the day of the move. He did not return calls and just texted me that it is not going to work out for the day of move.that's it !He also mentioned that he forgot about Verrazano Toll. Seriously? You are in moving business and living in Brooklyn and you did not know about the toll. Fine. I had no problem paying extra as I was left out with no choice but he did not respond. I would not recommend booking this mover . Barry, coolest guy on this freaking planet! A friend of mine told me to call Barry to help me move in the pouring rain tonight... I called Barry at approx. 3pm, told him I needed to move about 60 blocks from midtown to the upper east around 8pm. He told me no problem. When he got there, he didn't dick around and loligag.. we started moving immediately. I brought two guys with me to help carry misc. items, but Barry took care of all the tough stuff! (Big dresser, bed, mattress, etc). When we got to my apartment, he carried everything up a 4th floor walk up! Perfect! No complaining, just some great help! The mover flaked out on me 8pm the day before I move and only when I Texted him to confirm! He said his three tires got cut by someone ...if that's true, I do understand and that's why I put two stars instead of one! but really? Shouldn't you tell your customer first thing because my scheduled move was 8am the next day? How do you expect someone to find another mover 8pm the day before? If I don't ask you to confirm, does it mean I will NOT get any notice and will be stupidly waiting at 8am in the morning with no one showing up?? I needed a daybed moved fro Brooklyn to 155th/Riverside, and the mover I'd originally hired flaked on me, so I was pretty frustrated. If I could give him 10 stars I would! I got a killer deal on a new couch and had to find a way to get it to my 4th floor apartment. While I'm not a cheapskate, I AM very thrifty and I've never actually paid people to move me - yes, I've always taken advantage of my family in the past! Well, alas, my family is in CA and I needed help in NY. So I searched Craigslist and hired the cheapest movers I could find - and they flaked out. So I then found HK Movers and they quoted me a very reasonable price. Barry showed up on time and brought a friend to help with the heavy lifting. They were both nice, laid back, and professional. Once we got to my apartment, they really got to show off their skills as they squeezed the sectional sofa through the front door, up the 3 flights of stairs, and then into my apt. I should say it was a super humid day (and Father's Day, no less!) and these 2 worked their butts off. I definitely put them to the test when I asked if they'd move my old, oversized leather couch down to the curb. Without any hesitation, they agreed to do it!! Found HK Movers from Yelp well recommended and they did not disappoint. I texted Barry in the morning about helping me move an armoire I found in Craigslist the same evening. Move was from Washington Heights to Upper West Side. He was great about keeping in contact for meeting place and time. The armoire was pretty massive, about the size of a doorway, so that made things a bit tricky, but it was clear that Barry had done this before. He was very careful to place padding at any points where it could make contact with anything and smart about maneuvering through tight spots. I rode with him from pick-up to drop-off and we had a great conversation on the way. Easily one of the nicest guys I have ever met. Once we got to my place, he helped me get it exactly where I wanted it. AND to top it all off, the price was really great. I would for sure use HK Movers again and recommend them to anyone. read more

Barry was wonderful! He met me at my apartment on the UES and was a pro at fitting all of my stuff into his truck to move to my new apartment near Columbus Circle. I have no clue how we made it in one trip but we did. He even was so kind to help me set up my bed in my new place once we got there on a really hot day in July! The next day when I needed an AC unit installed he was back again. I saw all the great reviews, so I booked with Barry a few days before the move. He quoted me a flat rate of $60 total, with just him and I doing all the work. (I was moving just a bedroom, not a whole apartment, including just a box spring, frame, and many boxes.) He called the day before the re-confirm, and mentioned that his normal rate was hourly and higher and wasn't sure why he quoted me the flat rate. In any case, he re-confirmed for 11am. Then the next day (the day of the move), the texted me at 9:30 saying basically, "Oops, looks like I double-booked, you should find someone else." I was so mad! I assume he "double-booked" by getting someone to pay his normal rate! (I would have paid his normal rate if he'd asked because it still seemed fair.) Good luck trying to get a moving truck and helpers on short notice! He recommended Rob the Mover, who fortunately was able to fit me in during the evening, and did a great job. (See that review.) Barry's last-minute cancellation was extremely frustrating and unprofessional. He seemed fine up until that point, but there's no way I would trust him now. Update/reply to Barry: thanks for the comments and explanation. Yes, I changed my original estimate from 15 boxes to 25 boxes; that was definitely my bad for estimating wrong originally. I didn't require us to have a second guy, I just thought it might help speed up things, but I was willing to have just you and I do it, and not getting another guy wouldn't be a reason not to do the job at all. Found an ad for these guys on Craigslist interspersed among my search results for "FREE COUCH." If that isn't search engine optimization at its best I don't know what is. When I called there was a baby squawking in the background and after some bareknuckled price negotiation on my part (not) we arranged for a pickup/delivery. Barry and colleague arrived 15 minutes late (they'd kept me posted via text the whole time) in a dusty covered pickup which easily fit the 6'8" behemoth. My jealous boyfriend had tagged along to "protect me" and just as we were about to hail a cab back to my place-- "What are you guys doing? Dude, just hop in up front with us." These guys for real are the definition of chill. In a few moments we found ourselves hurtling down West Side Highway squeezed between two middle-aged men straight out of Big Lebowski. The real trial came in transporting the couch from the curb up to my 3rd floor walk-up. I get scared walking upstairs in heels I'm so convinced they'll collapse under the pressure: even with 200-lb couch Barry and friend made it up safely with some serious maneuvering and no complaints. Barry is great! I contacted so many people through yelp, but everyone was either outrageously priced (jacked up their prices for the last day of the month) or totally booked. Barry accommdated my 5 day notice request for the last day of the month move. His offer was also extremely fair. He showed up exactly on time and got right to work. He has this down to a science! He knows the city really well, so he knows which routes to take and how to cut across town the fastest. He even put together the bed that was waiting there for me! He did the entire job in 1 flat hour. No wasted time, no schemes, no hidden fees. I honestly never write reviews for places, but this had to be said. I encountered exactly the same situation as stated in Gabriel M's review. He was the most unprofessional mover I've ever hired. We agreed on a time and he not only did not show up, he didn't call to say he would be late or anything. After realizing that he was late, I had to call him and he said "I told you I wanted to do it earlier". His texts the prior day said "I may check and see if I can do it a little earlier is that ok?", to which I told him I couldn't. He did not respond to that, but just decided not to show up on the day of the actual move. During our conversation, he was incredibly rude: "well I won't be able to finish the (current) job if I keep talking to you" "if you want me to come help you, you should go figure out how late I can show up" "you're welcome to just call another mover, I won't be offended" Really? He also refused to pick up the phone after our first conversation. If you have time to respond to a text, you have time to have a conversation. He said that he could do 4.30 and then when I said that was fine he countered saying "realistically I can't do 4.30". He then asked if we could just leave the items downstairs and he would pick it up. Obviously I couldn't just leave something on the sidewalk for someone who would show up god knows when. Ended up just giving up on this guy and getting someone from Task Rabbit to pick it up instead and that was done in under an hour. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but if you really want a stress free move with someone responsible who isn't going to shrug it off when he bails on you, this probably isn't the right guy for you. Barry! SOOO great. I have hired him twice, once to move from Greenpoint to Astoria and then again from Astoria to Williamsburg. I know, you are wondering "but will all my stuff fit?" "Will he show up?" "WHY DOES MOVING SUCK SO MUCH?!" Yes your stuff will fit, Barry is a professional, he has a system that is flawless and he keeps you updated on his time frame. It's a mover- their days are crazy, and the scheduling is hard. I get that, so I totally appreciated him keeping me updated when he was a few minutes late. And you ride with him to the next place, and he's a really interesting guy, the small talk is great :) Plus, he really doesn't charge much at all. This is the most untrustworthy mover ever. Swore up and down he would be there at 10am. I texted him at 8:30 to confirm day of the move. These guys were awesome! Responded immediately, worked within our last minute time frame, and got all our pieces up our walk up in perfect condition. They were also amazing problem solvers helping us get our oversized couch through the window when it wouldn't fit through the door. We hired Barry and his team to move around several large pieces of furniture within our apartment. They arrived right on time. All furniture was moved safely and without damage. Among other things, they also disassembled a baby crib, moved it to another room, and reassembled it. They attached feet to a very large sofa. They assembled a dismantled queen size bed after moving the pieces. Throughout, they were efficient, conscientious, trustworthy, and very friendly. I booked these guys off of Craigslist to pick up a washer and dryer that I recently purchased. Barry got back to me quickly with a detailed quote that was very reasonable and was able to do the pick up the next day according to my schedule. The day of the move, they were at the location before I got there and were extremely careful and efficient with the move. The truck was nice, had blankets, tape, etc. Overall, I was extremely impressed with these guys; they're definitely great movers for Craigslist purchases! I HIGHLY recommend them! read more

Barry helped me move a queen size mattress, box spring and trunk coffee table from East Williamsburg/Bushwick to Inwood this morning. We had to carry the mattress (which I think is filled with bricks or sand or something it's so damn heavy) up a 5 floor walk up, but he made it happen. Barry's the man...friendly and easy going, dropped some Spiderman and William Dafoe knowledge on me on our drive, and extremely fair with his pricing.
