The Mothers Day brunch buffet meal was the worst meal I have EVER encountered. At $36.95 per person, one should expect to not be served cold powdered eggs, cold sausage, and cold coffee. The macaroni and cheese was vile, the "lemon" chicken was floury and tough. The prime rib I must say was perfect. The establishment is dirty and gross. Our dishes were dirty and sent back. How is this place still in business? Went on a Sunday afternoon. They have a "brunch" buffet and their regular lunch menu. Unfortunately, that ends the list of positive things. The stench in the lobby area that appeared to emanate from an adjacent cluttered room greeted us as we entered. The grungy and outdated appointments everywhere make it clear that the owners haven't spent a dime on this place for decades. The ambiance reminded me of a funeral home. It seemed that grime was present on virtually every surface. The menu is nothing to salivate over. The BLT is more bread than anything. Salads are mostly iceberg lettuce. The kraft singles cheese in the chefs salad was a nice touch. Toward the end of our visit, we discovered that we were the only ones there. I can see why the place might be slow. First, it was so cold in the restaurant we couldn't wait to get out to our car and warm up. We started with a Shrimp Cocktail. The shrimp were huge but so cold they were very hard and the sauce had to be put on with a spoon it was so thick. Very tomato tasting and no zip to the taste. Needed horseradish badly! Butter was too hard for the rolls even after sitting for 20 minutes on the table. Ordered filets medium and they came out VERY WELL DONE and dry as a bone. There was no juice to them whatsoever! They definitely make an effort here. We had a big group, and they brought all the meals out together, they were all hot. The chef clearly put a tremendous amount of efforts into the meal. The waitress did a good job. What is the downside? This restaurant doesn't get a lot of business. So I can't imagine they can keep fresh fish or meat. They've got to keep things frozen, because otherwise the food would go bad. So our group had a variety of things, the rubens were a big success. Their fries are good. The downside is the fish and the beef. The salmon was definitely frozen - it was dense and one texture. The beef didn't have a lot of flavor. It wasn't quick to get our meal, which we didn't mind because it was a big group. But I think that allowed them to de-frost the meat and the salmon. The Caesar salad had a really nice touch of candied bacon on it. So if you stay away from fish/meat that would be better served without freezing. And you go for the sandwiches, or chicken, you'll be better off. So even though we weren't impressed with some of the more expensive meals. Returned with a group last night and felt I need to update this review. There seem to have been a lot of changes since my couple of visits two years ago. First, the staff that we're assigned to our group were very friendly and worked hard. They made our experience pleasant. Second, there were many upgrades to the ingredients used and the chef prepared them properly. The food actually tasted good. I was cautious due to past experiences and ordered the broccoli cheese soup. The salad enjoyed by others looked much improved though and I included a pic. Their French-blue cheese dressing is a tasty surprise. The soup was delicious with broccoli cauliflower carrots and onion and was not overly thick but creamy and had great flavor. There was a burger on the menu that I ordered medium that came out medium (yay!) and seasoned nicely. The bun was fresh as were the lettuce tomatoes and onion. I enjoyed my meal and it was priced right. I also sampled a nibble of the salmon. It was tender and juicy, cooked to perfection, with an interesting sour cream sauce but it could've used some seasoning on the fish. The baked potato that came with it was fluffy. The dinner rolls were improved! For the atmosphere, the pricing on a few of the dishes is still a bit high. It remains dated inside, but it is a historical building. The decor needs freshening still. Expanding the menu & improving the ingredients was a great start! Hopefully they can continue in the direction they're headed. There was a live band last night in one half, which was nice to see the crowd. It was loud in that room but we could enjoy them from way on the other far side of the building just fine. I will not mind continuing to come here and see how they evolve. Kudos on the improvements! read more

Disappointed, wanted to go here for my birthday dinner and especially escargot. After ordering and waiting 15 minutes we were advised that they were out of escargot. The only option was the mussels which we ordered, again after 15 minutes were advised they were out of mussels. I was very hesitant to order the prime rib but figured what else could go wrong so I ordered it and it came out fine. The restaurant was sparsely occupied and perhaps the above is part of the reason. The owners really need to address these issues. This was one of my favorites but after this experience, not so much. read more

Last night I had the prime rib. It was huge and tender and delicious. My son had the escargot and chicken piccata. My husband had the shrimp cocktail (huge shrimp)! And the walleye. My wife and I have eaten here for the past 20 years and have never had a bad meal. If there is a problem the wait staff will take care of it right away. This restaurant is the place that your Grand Parents went to in the 50'and 60's on their date nights. You might be the youngest couple there on a Friday night. It is a great place to get a stiff drink and an awesome prime rib. The prime rib is the best in North East Ohio and is always good. The WORST food and service I have had in years! I took my entire family here for Thanksgiving for their set menu and the majority of the food on our plates was inedible for all of my six family members. The stuffing was so dense and had raw dough inside of it, the ham was primarily nothing but fat and tasted and looked like it came from a ham that was plumped up with hormones and antibiotics, the green beans either came out of a can or were poorly cooked, mash potatoes were poorly prepared and tasted like they were made the prior day, and the pumpkin pie was brought in and not made in-house and was covered with whip cream to try to make up for the poor and cheap taste. The server provided very poor service by not checking in with us, left our drinks empty for an over-extended time, and acted like we were an inconvenience to her. The restaurant was not busy, several staff members were just walking around, and I over heard and saw multiple tables complaining to themselves about the poor service and food. Our entire table complained to our server about the food and showed her the raw stuffing. She didn't apologize, instead brought out a giant bowl of more raw stuffing and said she hopes that this is better. Why would anybody bring more inedible food to the table?!? ZERO quality control and ZERO accountability!!! She cleared off the entire table, but left the raw stuffing on the table. After a few minutes, she then served us the cheap pumpkin pie. I was so disappointed with all of this that I then took the bowl of raw stuffing to the four staff members standing in the hallway, asked to speak with the manager and filed a complaint. They comped our food, but we didn't know this until the sever came back to our table 10 minutes afterwards and said that we don't have to pay for anything in a not-so-kind manner. The management should have formally addressed the complaint and stated this instead of having us wait again for the server. Why is it that so many places like this don't serve good food, don't have good service, and don't have accountable management or owners any more? Do they just don't care any longer and expect people to except their sub-par junk? Customers have power in their voice and where they plan to dine at in the future. We left a $40 tip, but our family will NEVER EVER go back to this place where they sell inedible food. read more

Went to Dinner last Sunday night - Server recommended Prime Rib. We ordered Medium rare and received Well done. It was overcooked and dry. When complained, they gave us a small discount, but basically did nothing to rectify. We couldn't even eat it. Décor is old and outdated. read more

You could get a more respectable salad from Taco Bell! Didn't even try them. Baked potato tasted like it was in a warmer ALL DAY! To be clear on my review. As someone active in the industry, I find it insulting for my server to assume that I came in looking for a free meal. First off, I DIDN'T EAT MY MEAL, THERE WAS HAIR IN IT! Secondly, when this happens where I work, we don't insult our guest by taking $8 off a $28.99 meal, we comp it....for it had two hairs on two different plates of food, witch leaves me to think there was hair everywhere if I had two for two. I remember Hellriegel's to be a beautiful place, elegant with great food and service....Well that was then and this is now! After several years away, today I tried the Sunday Breakfast Buffet. Not only will I NOT RECOMMEND the cold, old hash brown potatoes or the cold bland pre-made pancakes or the watered down orange juice. I was highly disappointed with the service as well. When asked about the meal, we told the waitress we were less than satisfied. My entire meal was in front of me with only one taste of each item because it was not edible. She said nothing, no manager came to speak with us and nothing was taken off the bill. I had to go home & make breakfast...What a waste of time & money. I will not return! My family went to Hellriegels for the first time on Thanksgiving to give us all a break from cooking. The food was horrible. Similar to what one would imagine being served in prison. Cold gravy, turkey that wasn't even a roasted turkey but a cafeteria turkey roll, no flavor at all. Green beans had no seasoning and even the rolls were cold. We hardly ate any of the food and sat with dishes in front of us with almost all the food still on the plates. Waitress brought the check $180 + and didn't even clear our plates or ask us how the food was. Shame on them serving such bad food on a very important holiday.
