I ordered doordash from here, so my review is based on carry-out quality and not dine in. Food reviews below! I got two sweet potato tempura maki, and it was very good! The pricing is super affordable at $6 a roll and it comes with 6 pieces which is nice. Other sushi restaurants usually cut this type of futo maki into 5 pieces and charge $7-8 per roll so you're definitely getting the bang for your buck with this one. I am also a fan of how late Hello Sushi is open-- at a 10:45 closing time, they come in clutch for late night sushi cravings. My only critique is the rice to potato ratio-- it was really ricey and did not have enough filling. The taste of the rice itself was not very appetizing and I could tell it was not the highest quality. That's the reason for four stars, but other then that the sushi is super good and good quality for the price. read more

I'm just not that into you. It pains me to say it because any friend of GrubHub is a friend of mine. You sounded good on paper but when I picked you up, you looked a bit different than your description. I try not to judge a book by the cover because it's all about the insides and not the outside, right? I was sad when I discovered your substance was just as ugly as your appearance. I'm sorry, but I don't think we will be having another rendezvous. I paid $30 on Grub Hub for 4 rolls, 3 of them quite basic. I love sweet potato rolls - so much so that I ordered 2 right off the bat from Hello Sush for $6 eachi. It's hard for me to talk smack about a local business with lovely employees (the girl was very sweet when I picked up my food), but being completely honest it was the worst sweet potato roll I've ever had. It didn't have much flavor and I just wasn't into it. The description said spicy mayo and cream cheese and I think both were lacking or they put in a tiny tab - not enough to add anything to the roll. I didn't even finish the second sweet potato roll, which for me is like food disrespect...how dare a soul not finish all put in front of them!? Waste not, want not - starving children in Africa - don't be rude & finish everything - etc. etc. etc. The shiitake mushroom roll was actually quite tasty. I'm not sure what they soaked the mushrooms in but it added to the flavor. This roll was just $4 so not badly priced either. Unfortunately it had an issue of being very poorly constructed. It was so loosely rolled that when I picked it up, it nearly fell completely apart. I also got a roll which I don't see on their website menu but was on their GrubHub menu which may explain why it wasn't made according to what they listed. I ordered a Philly roll which was again supposed to have a spicy mayo but no spice nor mayo was on it. Stay away from this restaurant. They do not care about the food quality and do not care about their customers. We ordered take-out and noted items missing. When we called, they said they didn't care and wouldn't do anything about it. When we later noticed improperly cooked food, we called back and they reiterated their stance that this was just 'too bad' and we were on our own. So disappointed in this establishment as we have had good food and service from them in the past. I guess if there are any errors in service (such as missing items or miscooked food), they don't care. I've never seen this place busy, but I assure you the food has nothing to do with it. I've tried many different rolls here, all have been excellent, taste and presentation, though the portion is slightly smaller. Their lunch specials are a great deal! Got spring rolls as an appetizer and avocado and vegetarian maki all for $7.95. The place is tiny but nice looking. I love their chopsticks! Wood chopsticks are the absolute best, functionally AND asthetically. Everyone knows chopsticks matter. Otherwise you are stuck looking like a dumb ass while slippery fish slides off your ugly plastic chopsticks. My ginger ale came in a really cool looking tall glass. So, definitely points for presentation. My server was very sweet and attentive, and happy to make recommendations and talk me through my lunch options. At the end she went out of her way to make sure I got the 30% discount on my extra order of rolls. She was one of those rare servers, who genuinely cares that you have a good time, and not just because of tips. Just because it's her job and she's good at it. I was like this, and I can spot them a mile off. The Lunch Special sushi was good! Not out of this world amazing, but very good. Everything was very fresh, especially the avocado. After eating this sushi, I was ready to give this place four stars. Then, because I wasn't quite stuffed totally full yet, I decided to order an extra order of the Sweet Potato Maki. Holy crackers! The other sushi was good, this sushi was INCREDIBLE. It ranks as some of the best sushi I've ever had. Came here just the other night and ordered a lot of food. We started off with crab rangoon ("lagoon" on their menu) and gomae (spinach with sesame paste). Crab rangoon was really hot so if you're hungry to chow down, beware! I love spinach a lot, but the gomae was so-so. For sushi, we tried out the Spider Maki (soft shell crab), the Rainbow roll (crab, tuna, avocado, white fish, etc), Sweet potato maki, and I forget what the fourth roll was now. Everything tasted okay, not the best sushi I've ever had by any means, but it was decent. The service we had was standard, server was nice. This isn't my first time here which I was surprised and when I checked in and was told "This is your first check-in" What?! How could I be so remiss in my check-in responsibilities? I'm ashamed... Ok I'm over it. :) I'm here kinda early I guess - 6:33p on a Monday night. Nobody here. So I'm seated in the other dining room (by "other" I mean not the one where the sushi chefs are). Ok - I'm here by myself in a larger room which is a little odd but I can deal. (Note: during my meal I could hear the door buzzer go off every time more people came in but for some reason nobody shows up in the dining room I'm in. Hmmm - I showered before I went there - what gives?) A very nice women seats me and takes my drink order. I go for the green tea which comes with a tea bag but no place to put it so guess it will just steep longer. Good thing I like a stronger/darker tea. Later on another women comes and is very sweet and brings me soy sauce and pours it for me. She is very attentive throughout the meal for water, more tea (hot water, etc) I order my appetizer and as this place is Thai/Sushi I decide to go with something different. I ask for the "Kra Tong Thong". Now, I'm sure I don't not have the best accent but how off can one not pronounce this item so it's somewhat recognizable? By the look I got - I guess I was way off! So I point and she looks and then repeated just what I said but still gives me this "you REALLY wanna order that??" look. Now I MUST get it cuz something is up with this. It arrives and its - well - not very impressive looking. Nice enough but a little "grocery store frozen appetizer" looking. No sauce. Just ground chicken, maybe some veggies (?) in a tiny phyllo basket. So I try one. It's warm - not hot, dry as the dessert and no spice let alone spiced. Whatever, it's edible and I'm hungry so I finish it. Not recommending that one. Now I understand the look which really meant "Psssst! You don't really want this - it's not very good!" Next comes my entrée - Chirashi - and my Red Sea Maki (spicy tuna, red tobiko, panko topped with salmon and ebi). Both look very good and nicely present. Though I'm not used to Chirashi on a plate vs a bowel. Well, time to take a couple of pics and dig in! The maki is actually very good. However, the chef didn't cut all the way through the nori (seaweed) which makes it a little difficult to pick up without breaking it. Never seen that before - is that something you'd send back in a Japanese restaurant like when the temperature of your steak is wrong in a steakhouse? Hmmm.. The Chriashi was very good though I had one complaint. The Oshinko they circle the fish and rice with is cut in long strips vs bite sized pieces. I think tonight's sushi chef has an aversion to knives or he needs a sharper one. The cut of fish in the Chrashi is very generous and the rice is well prepared. A hearty portion and good value for the price. The biggest disappointment which left the evening on a sour note is that I apparently missed the sign they put on the door which states that they are no longer accepting Groupons or LivingSocial vouchers. Imagine my surprise when I went to use my Living Social voucher at the end of my meal and she wouldn't accept it. My fault for not mentioning I had it when I walked in and to her credit she did take $10 off the bill. Guess my next call is to LivingSocial... So not a perfect experience but not a horrible one. The quality of the fish is good and I would consider going back sometime but mostly because its convenient to my home and the fish is good when you need that oh-so-impotant "Fish Treatment" read more

I stopped going here...now i remember why. Simple order of Goma-ae and we got two fork fulls of spinach over a heap of mixed greens. I called to let them know maybe they made a mistake on the small portion. She confirmed she saw the order and that's the regular size. Then tried to tell me it was a Goma-ae salad. Uh, BS. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken for my brother and there was no rice (although I paid for the rice). When Grubhub called the restaurant, the restaurant told GrubHub that the rice was included with the dish. However, it was not. Furthermore, our drinks where delivered without straws and the delivery man did not want to deliver our food to our door because of his parking spot. First, yelp menu is wrong so beware. Duck salad I ordered was absolutely smothered in onions and the GrubHub menu didn't say it even had onions. No online menus are to be trusted. Once I peeled off the onions (I had the same amount of onions as I had the rest of the food), there wasn't much duck but it was good. Definitely not giving this place another chance. We went in on a slow night, after they were apparently under new management (changes for the better? Or not). I ordered duck curry and somehow they mixed up my order with that of the table next to us. It happens and I get it, but because of the way the restaurant is split up, I had to go into the other half (after 10 minutes spent waiting for someone, ANYONE to check on us) to let them know of the mistake. A whole lot of confusion happened wherein they took the dish away from the table next to us, ignored us for another 5 minutes and then finally came back to tell us that another curry was being made for me and to take the peanut butter curry away (I swear it tasted like peanut butter and coconut milk which is not my thing but if it's yours then This Is The Place For You). Finally my dish arrived and while the red curry itself was tasty (average) the duck had an odd, foul (fowl jokes!) taste to it, and it just wasn't very good. Ended up barely eating any of it. I went here on a Friday night. The space is nice, and we were able to get a table for two without a wait around 7pm. Neighborhood parking was easy, there are also paid street spots closer. Unfortunately, the food and service left a lot to desire. The edamame was overcooked, the spring rolls were soggy and the plum sauce was too sour, and the miso soup came to the table room temperature. I ordered the veggie roll and sweet potato roll, and ate barely any of either. The veggie roll was so packed with vegetables, I'm not sure how it ended up so bland. And the sweet potato roll was a stretch for me - not usually something I'd order - but still, the flavor combination was just off somehow. The waitstaff was largely unavailable, and after our rolls were brought out we had to request soy sauce and dishes. The overall experience did not live up to the lovely space. read more

Nothing fancy, just a few rolls since I cannot eat Thai food due to my peanut allergy. Delivery was QUICK and FRIENDLY. The fish was also really fresh! The deep dark colors of the place and the elegant black lacquered tables are too rich for the view just outside of the big windows on Devon .... and the view is the only thing that reminds you that you are still on Devon Ave .... the service was lively and quick ! the portions of food were Large ! and Delicious ! i must explore more of their offerings ! read more

I ordered their pad thai for lunch and it was the most bland pile of noodles I've ever tasted. Others have also noted issues with delivery. My delivery took nearly 90 minutes, and 30 minutes longer than they had quoted. Keep looking. read more

My Tekkamaki was good but the vegetable tempura was not. The sauce was too sweet and every veggie had a very thick breading on it that I had to peel most of off to make it edible. The nice waitress gave me another sauce but it was way to salty. I do like the thai food here though. read more

The wrong order was delivered to me - an order of sushi. The quantity of food was not comparable to what I ordered for two, and quite frankly it wasn't that delicious. This place gets a (-0) from me. It was Monday night and they were not super busy. Me and two other girls walked in and were seated right away. We ordered three different types of appetizers(crab rangoon, fried tofu and veg spring rolls) which were fine. For the main course, we ordered chicken w/ veg, thai fried rice w/chicken, veg crispy sweet potato maki and two other kinda of roll. Our server first brought out the sushi rolls and they were okay. I had experienced better, but I was disappointed with the thai entree. As soon as I tasted the chicken, I knew it was not fresh. It smelled like a rotten food. I called my server and complained that the chicken is smelly. She said the chicken was fresh and there was nothing wrong with it. At that point, I had it enough and didn't argue with her. I Asked for my check. I had half of the sushi rolls sitting on table and both of the thai entree. She didn't ask if I wanted carry out boxes. In my 'hood (borderline between Edgewater & Rogers Park), there are 2 places I hit up for thai/sushi ... The Blue Elephant (see review) and Hello. TBE does not have sushi and that's cool, but when I want sushi, I say HELLO! (That was so cheeseball, but I couldn't help myself. I crack myself up.) Anyway, I've had Hello both delivered and dine-in. Delivery is speedy and the hot stuff arrives hot and the sushi is packed separately to stay cool. I cannot tell you how many times I've ordered from places and gotten hot food and sushi and they pack it together and I've got hot raw fish. BARF. Ok, back on track. But it's a really nice place to eat in too! If you're driving, there is always plenty of meter parking on Devon right in front. It's decorated all dim and kinda sexy, reds and dark browns. It's never crowded (which is too bad; they deserve to be) and it's BYOB. The menu is huge and I've never had anything I did not like. Do your belly a solid and try Hello. read more

I used to love coming here for their sushi. However, over time the place has slightly gone down hill. First off, I will say that in the beginnning of my relationship with HELLO was good! I thought all of the sushi was phenomenal. My top three faves were the Spider Maki, the Nightcrawler, and the Dragon. NOW, the menu has changed completely, and all of my faves, except for the Dragon are gone. I understand that certain restaurants from time to time will change things up, and switch menu items around. However, other new specialty roles that I have tried are just not that good at all. I have not had any of the Thai entrees, as I just would always go there for the sushi. I must say, their sea weed salad is very good! Get it every time I go. Oh, and it's BYOB! The service is always mediocre. The girls who work there don't speak a lick of English, which is not the biggest concern of mine, as you can easily just point to a menu item, and they then know exactly what you want. Other than that, the service is just okay. I live on Ridge in West Rogers Park, so I typicaly just drive there. It's located right on Devon and Clark, and you would think the parking would be bad, or could be bad, especially on a weekend night, but it never is! That is the one convenient thing about going to dinner at HELLO, is if you have a bad dinner, at least you don't have to walk a mile to your car! There is almost always parking right in front of the restaurant. Overall, I will be a frequent visitor to HELLO if they bring back some of my favorite Maki! read more

These guys do good food. And its a nice environment. But Edgewater is a very competitive neighborhood for Asian eats. I would say give em a try if you live or work along Devon or if you're one of the Loyola kids. But there's a few other places I'd recommend first if you had to venture somewhere. read more

A while back, after my original review, I decided to try Hello Sushi again. My first impression had not been the best, but since then I have ordered delivery many times. Mom is in love with the food from Hello Sushi, especially the soup and some of the appetizers. I've tried a variety of the Thai dishes and although I have had better, I am very content with what I get delivered to my door. I still tend to not order sushi. It is not bad, but other places have spoiled me. The delivery service is terrific. They are always fast, and every thing is well packed. One time I had ordered a ginger ale and they forgot to send it. I called and told them. The next time we ordered, the ginger ale was delivered. I was surprised because to be honest, I had long since forgotten about it. I like that kind of attention to detail. So ... yes, I am now a fan and I am glad I gave them another try! read more

Apparently I am one of the few people who found Hello Sushi absolutely disgusting. I got delivery and it took almost an hour and a half. The food itself absolutely left something to be desired. I ordered the sweet potato rolls that everyone was raving about and practically gagged after eating my first piece. It was so full of the mayo/cream cheese whatever that it completely overpowered everything else. I tried to take some of it out, and the roll was still completely bland. Ordered Pad See Ewe and Pad Thai TWICE. Both experiences have been wonderful! $2 delivery fee and $12 minimum - nothing in this area beats that! The first time I ordered was late at night around 9 pm ( a few weeks ago) when none of the other Thai places around were able to deliver except Hello. Though it did take some time to get to me, I wasn't surprised considering the weather circumstances and the time I ordered it at. Regardless, food was hot and tasty! Second time was during lunch hour around 1 pm yesterday. That was the quickest delivery I have ever seen for any place I've ordered Thai from! Food was pipping hot and so delicious. I love the flavors they infuse their noodles with. I could eat the noodles without any meat (which does happen since I tend to eat most of it until I get to the last few bites) Definitely has not been a let down any of the times I've ordered and will most likely be my go-to place from now on.
