Nothing short of a beautiful hiking day at Hellman Park. Always enjoy the scenery and the lush, green nature that surrounds you. So grateful to have this place so close to home.
A great local hiking spot. My go to. Steep tall hills, one hills is very long and steep to climb! Barely any shade. To the water tower and back is about 4 miles. Parking is at small strip of sidewalk in front of entrance. Spaces for about 5-6 cars. One portapotty in parking lot at being of trail. Occasional wild animals, beetles, rabbits, lizards, coyotes, deer, crows, etc. Park rangers monitor at closing so be out of preserve before closing.
Is great for a hike, nice and steady great weather nice and clean would recommend for someone to go early morning unless you're up for the heat try 12 early morning is great for beginners
I am a person who likes sports! This mountain is very suitable for me! If you like hiking, come here
This was a good, solid hike. The first mile of this trail was strenuous and all uphill. There was a steep incline but after that it's flat until you're about a quarter of a mile from the water tower. Also, there's no shade so make sure to start early. The views were amazing and I felt safe hiking alone. I'd do it again.
Great steep, uphill hike. Bring water on Sunny days. No shade. Pack out what you pack in. It sucks that during rattlesnake season you get the idiots with big ass speakers hiking. Makes it hard to listen for the snake rattle. No one wants to hear it. Buy sone headphones.
Def recommend this hike. Warning: has lots of steep hills so if you're looking for a flat and casual hike, this isn't the place. I'd you want to Get a good pump and sweat in, it's for you. There are multiple entrances to this hike, but if you start from Greenleaf and hike all the way to the Turnbull entrance and back, it's about 8 miles round trip. It's a dirt path that's scenic and overlooks the city of WHITTIER and Rose hills Cemetery. It's packed so go early, and the parking lot is tiny so most likely you will have to park on the streets, but most of The street parking requires a permit, so pay careful Attention to the signs. Best of all, this place is dog friendly!
It's definitely a 4.5 star trail rated path. There are many paths, but this one is hard, steep, grueling at times, not for first-timers. No bikers allowed. Take water, trail to towers is around 1.5 to 2 miles ... round trip around 4 miles. Parking is hard. Just make sure you follow parking signs. None, at park site, unless you arrive at 5am or get lucky. If you have jogged hiked or ran trails before and have experience in 4 to 6 mile trips, then you should be okay. But those just visiting, try another trail before this one. They close early, around 5/ 6 pm. The best times are around 6am to 9am. Leash pets pets please, and clean after yourself. don't litter!
Say what you will about this hiking trail but for the past five years it has been one of my favorites and a good challenge for all those looking for one. Located up the hill of Uptown Whittier this hiking trail seems fitting for the name because it will be hell if you hate steep incline hikes. This parking lot is small and that means you'll be tempted to park on the street and trek to the entrance. The problem with that is for about two blocks around the area parking is only permit. So you'll have to make sure you go down a bit further to find street parking. From the moment you start the hike you realize this is going to be tough, especially for those who do not hike often. It is about a straight 45 degree incline up for half a mile. It'll be difficult, there will be sweating, and you grunts can stem from both laborious trekking to jubilant cardio. Though the first half might be difficult those views are stunning when you arrive at a peak. You can see all the way to the skyscrapers of Downtown LA or even the Buddhist temple near by. On sunsets and sunrises the skies are painted with California gold. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and makes you feel alive. However, any other part of the day, especially on hot sunny ones, and you'll feel like dying. There is no shade provided except for the trees at the bottom of the hike. No watering holes or interesting waterfalls. The only thing fairly interesting is the graffiti filled water tower you'll see sitting on our posting selfies with. This is why water and proper skincare is necessary. Highly recommend bringing a hat on those extra hot days. I love Hellman Park because it is a straight workout. No embellishment with flat ground and shaded woods. No crazy detours to forested lands. Instead, you get difficult inclines with no shades that'll make you drench in sweat and feel alive. This is a great place to workout and get your heart pumping without having to look hard to find it.
If you're looking for a good workout this is your place! This hill gets your heart pumping from the moment you start. The only downside of going to this hike is the parking. Parking is limited and nearby streets require permit parking. You can start your exercise a few block away where parking permits are not required. The additional walk is worth it! Get your heart pumping, get your stamina on point. Enjoy!
If you want a workout, i recommend taking the hellman park trail!!! The steep hills will have your legs aching and sweating like crazy. Plus the bonus to taking this hike is the wildlife you get to see up there. Which goes from lizards,spiders,birds and coyotes!! There also snakes but i recommend not getting to close to them. Suggestion: hellmans park will still be closed due to covid 19 due to the goverment not wanting people to park close to each other. I recommend taking the turnbull trail which is down the street. Also take your time hiking and enjoy the view dont rush cause there is a lot rocks to trip on.
Perfect short local hike when you need a butt kicking hill! It seems there are a lot of connecting trials but we started on Greenleaf as the Yelp map shows Pretty exposed so I would not suggest this in the hotter months unless you go very early in the morning Heading up and the cutting west gives you a nice view through to DTLA (inner this hike would be awesome at night to see the city lights) NOTE: there's a designated parking lot at the trail head

Hellman Park has been around for a long time. Back in the day when my mom was growing up in Whittier, Hellman was used by a dairy farmer as a grazing area for his cows. You could hike up in the park and hang out with the cows. The dairy farm and cows are now gone. When I was little, we'd hike up in the hills for hours with my family and our dogs. There was a water trough that was leftover from the dairy farm days, but that has since been removed (along with a lot more acreage) due to the City of Whittier. The City built another water reservoir in 2003 (which is REALLY lame since they already had a water reservoir up there and it ruined the view of the park). Hellman has basically one main trail with a lot of offshoots. The main trail is about 3 miles roundtrip. You can take another trail that will take you over to another park (forgot what it is called) that is in Turnbull Canyon. There are no facilities, so bring your own water. You can go mountain biking, walk your dog or ride a horse on the trail, but don't forget to pick up after your pets! There are many scenic vistas where you can see downtown LA, Whittier, the San Gabriel Valley, and on a clear day, Catalina Island. It can get to be pretty quiet up in the hills, save for the occasional redtail hawk or skittish lizard. Be wary of rattlesnakes. When I hiked up in Hellman Park the other day and looked out towards Rose Hills, I was expecting to see more hills. SkyRose Chapel and the new Buddhist pagoda were right there instead. This was disappointing-- that development is further encroaching into the Whittier hills. There is also a lot of tagging on some poles and logs of wood that are used to support the trail when it rains. Sigh-- I remember when Hellman was truly unspoiled, and it's disappointing to know that it is slowly disappearing and being defaced by disrespecting people. read more
It's a little difficult to review Hellman Wilderness Park because it's sandwiched inbetween Turnbull Canyon to the east and Sycamore Canyon to the northwest and it's hard to figure out if I'm actually hiking at Hellman or not. Anyways, according to the map, Hellman Park includes the whole Hellman Park Trail, parts of Rattlesnake Ridge Trail, as well as parts the Mariposa and Peppergrass Trails. The hikes along these trails are fun and not too difficult and seem to be very popular with the locals. Hellman Park Trail: Nice easy 1.1 mile uphill trail that has a small section of switchbacks. The final push to hit the Rattlesnake Ridge above is the fun part. Rattlesnake Ridge Trail: This is a scenic trail, mostly flat but you get a close up view of the Rose Hills pagoda and a beautiful view of the surrounding area and DTLA in the distance. Along this trail just before the radio towers, there is a little connector trail that takes you to Sycamore Canyon Trail called Sycamore Switchback Trail. Mariposa and Peppergrass Trails: These two trails are a split of one trail that eventually merge again. Peppergrass Trail is probably the most challenging uphill climb in this whole area. Try climbing this trail from the bottom for some intense workout! The Mariposa Trail on the other hand is a more laid back, scenic trail in comparison but it's no walk in the park either. Hellman is a fun park with variety of trails to customize your own hike with. It's also got easy access to Turnbull and Sycamore Canyons if you want to extend your hikes. There is one area as you get to the bottom where some taggers have covered up a sign that tells you not to go down that way. It's true. I've giving a park, but not Mother Nature, a 'Meh' rating. First, Frank S' review really has all of the details you need. Especially where to download the map - http://www.habitatauthority.org/trails/ Here's the scoop. It was nice to go to a new park for a change of pace. Many people said hello and were friendly. Lots of families out with kids, which was nice to see. You can see almost all of the trails so there's little mystery to where you're headed. Plenty of parking, too. For now, the Hellman Park trail is closed. I think the overall ele gain was about 700 ft and after 4.6 miles, I'd had enough of the basic trails. Unfortunately, there is just a lot of trash and the signs are all tagged. Poop bags, lots of water bottles on the slopes of the trails and even a diaper or two was spotted. I'm probably overreacting but it was just so disappointing. I only had my wastepack on so could only carry a few bits and hardly made a micro-dent. And I found the trails kind of a variation on a basic theme - wide, dirt fire-roads (except for Mariposa). If I wasn't disappointed by the trash, I might have headed down/up the Sycamore switch-backs but just needed to be done with Hellman park for now. read more
This used to be my favorite hiking trail because it was open so early. Recently the gated the trail and now it isn't open until 9am. Bummer. VERY difficult uphill inclines but it's a great workout & there are beautiful views once you reach the top. Definitely a challenge but I love this trails difficulty read more

I'm sorry for being a bit biased, but I'm not a fan of city hikes. They are too easy and meant for a quick jog or for walking your dogs. I definitely enjoy a challenge within a hike and thus wasn't one of them. This hike is very straightforward with the yelp address, so you won't have problems. One problem you might have is for parking, it is very limited. Next problem, is that you will see very many dogs out here. If you don't like dogs or are allergic, then be careful, although dog owners here are good about controlling their pets. Downfall is that the watershed thing, is fenced off because of all the graffiti. That doesn't stop people from making an opening. Take your pictures and bounce before others see you. Other than that, this trail is quick and simple. Oh and for those who are as curious about the temple as I was, it's closed. I took some off trails, to check out the temple and you have to wait for it to open or be allowed in for a reason. You can not dilly dally around that place. read more

A friend in the next suite told me about this place (we're in a diet contest together) and so i decided to check it out. The first time was challenging but doable. It was a hot day when we hiked (90 degrees still), after 6 pm - these California heatwaves are no joke. They last all damn night.. if i could only take my skin off.. Anyhoo, this place is pretty cool and they've got different trails. People bike up there, dear God, the trail is not that wide fellas.. if i fell, i'd fall off a cliff and that scares me. So from now on, i think i'll stick to the wider, yet steeper, trails. I tell you this, by hiking these trails it has built up my stamina so now i walk farther and longer and my fata$$ is attempting to run.. Go figure.. A hiking we will go.. read more

Well, I have never really been on another trail, but this one is certainly my favorite! Lol I come here about 3xs a week in the morning to get a good workout in. I typically take the mariposa trail which is nice, not so steep. Watch out, you may see some critters as I've came into contact with spiders, of all sorts, flies that look like their on steroids, and snakes. I have noticed recently that a lot of kids go and deliberately drop their trash, empty water bottles on the trail. C'mon guys - pick up your shit! Speaking of shit - please pick up after your animals too! When I take my dogs, I pick up after them. Don't be the Asshole that leaves your dog's Crap in the middle of the trail! *end of rant* Other than that, very good place to hike! Take water and stay safe! Oh, you may run into a guy named Bob! Really nice dude! I always run into him even when I take different routes! He's a local! Stay safe folks! read more
This trail area is much more demanding than the nearby Arroyo Pescadero park. The top incline is 350 ft according to the trailhead map. I started by going in a clockwise loop from walking around the water station. Then you get to the switchbacks. Up the hill, and then finally to the fire road that overlooks the Rose Hills Cemetery and Buddhist Columbarium (in case you were wondering http://www.yelp.com/biz/ibps-rose-hills-buddhist-columbarium-whittier), then back down to the trailhead. The last bit is a pretty steep decline. If I were to climb this going the other way it would have been tough. I greatly appreciated the switchbacks on the other end of the trail. The views were pretty good, the natural vegetation was interesting. Lots of high grass, flowers and cacti. Youre literally walking a narrow path between the fields at some points. Less than 10 parking spots, plus a couple handicap. This is a trail I'd like to go back repeatedly and work on my cardio. There were more trails to try and more rewarding overall for a local hike. read more
I hike this trail pretty often because sometimes I just want to go hiking but don't want to drive too far (I'm from the SGV area). It's a low key hiking trail in a residential area that I would have never noticed if I didn't look it up. They have a parking lot available at the trail start, but there are limited spots. You can do street parking but watch out for the signs saying permit parking only. It's not the most exciting hike. It's a pretty boring trail full of just dirt and some plants. But as you get higher, you start to get a good view and can see DTLA in the distance. It's a very good leg & butt workout because it's essentially hills on hills on hills. Be careful on your way down though because it can get pretty steep and you don't want to slip and fall! It's a pretty wide trail, so crowdedness isn't an issue. At the top, there's a water tower that used to be graffiti-ed out that looked pretty cool and was great for photo ops. However, they recently painted over it and put a fence around it. LAME ): Overall, it's a pretty decent hike for when you want a good outdoor workout. read more

Hellman is my local hike/trail and i am so grateful that it's so close to home. Today i came with a friend and we arrived at 8:40am so we could get good parking. The park ranger opened the gates at 8:50am and we were able to go right in. Be aware that the parking for the hike is extremely limited and you are unable to park on the streets next to the entrance due to required permits. So arrive early if you want to make sure you get a spot. If you don't, you will have to park a little far from the trail. There are several routes you can take while doing this hike. One is typically the harder than the other which is nice because you can change routes as you go. On a clear day the view from the top is spectacular! read more

This is a pick your own adventure kind of hike..No matter what route is taken you are guaranteed to start on the uphill and finish on the downhill. You will see snakes, deer, cactus and even a big cat from time to time. I'd advise not to hike alone just in case you run into trouble like getting injured. You will usually run into fellow hikers along this path. The route I usually go on takes about an hour to complete and is right around 3 miles long. I reach the highest point in my hike within the 1st mile. This mile will test you without a doubt since you climb just about 800 ft. The remaining 2 miles is a nice relaxing hike down & around the mountain back to the car. The most common path people usually take is the switch back first route (From the fork at the parking lot head left through the gate). This route is easier and not as steep. If you're looking for a more challenging route, head right from the parking lot up the dirt path. I recommend you always choose the steeper path when there's a fork. read more

Hills hills and more hills and a great workout is what you will get at Hellman Park. It is both challenging yet great knowing that you will get a good workout that your legs and butt with both love you and hate you. But the sweet part is the amazing views all around and the beautiful scenery you will encounter. Brings lots of water as there is not much shade and during the warmer weather you will definitely need to hydrate. This is a great trail in Whittier. Be cautious of the parking situation as you don't want to get a ticket. We usually park in Uptown Whittier and walk to the trail because after all it does add to the workout. read more

One of my go to hikes. It's simplistic, breath taking views, intense variations in the grade of the climb, and just never disappoints. Maybe 3 miles round trip from just the first plateau. It keeps going though but I usually chill at the first plateau for a while then head back down. Easy street parking if the two small parking lots are full. read more

Went here to do hill training for a marathon that I'm running in May. Hellman Park has a trail that's almost 4mi round trip and has crazy inclines. The trail consists of multiple hills in a row and overall the incline gets progressively steeper. The trail ends at a water tower which has some interesting graffiti but unfortunately a lot of trash as well. Would definitely recommend this hike for intermediate hikers due to the steep hills, but I do see beginning hikers do the first part of the hike and then turn around. Pros -Extremely challenging hills! -Short distance if you need to save time -Nice views at the water tower -Easy trail to navigate Cons -Trail gets crowded quickly and I had to walk around a lot of slower hikers -Hard to find parking if you hike in the later morning or afternoon; some of the blocks require permits so read the parking signs read more
This review is for 06/18/2011. I have one hike down on my belt (Malibu Creek State Park). Now, its time for another hike. With my weight loss for the past couple of months, I wanted to do more outdoor activities. So, my friend and I planned for weeks to go hiking over at Hellman Wilderness Park. Well, my friend got us lost initially on the way to Hellman. My friend's GPS got us to Hellman's House. OK, so we are going to hike a house. The situation was corrected and we went over to Greenleaf Ave and found the small parking lot for Hellman's Wilderness Trail. There are a few parking spots, but you can park on the lot. I brought my backpack with three bottles of water since it was a 3.6 to 4 mile hike up and it was quite warm that day. I brought snacks just in case. We may get hungry. The initial part of the hike was the part. It was quite steep and my legs did not get a proper warm up. I got tired after 30 steps even when all my excess 70lbs baggage came off. I had to take a break every 20 steps. My legs are still burning from that part. I thought Malibu Creek State Parks steep hill was a problem. Try this one for 20 minutes without a stick helping you. It took us about 1.5 hours to get to the water tower, but we made a lot of stops for photo ops. So, it was about two hours. We took photos of the Buddhist Temple at one of the forks in the trail road. When we reached the water tower. I couldn't believe we went up 618ft up versus 150-200ft at Malibu Creek. Another accomplishment off my books. It was a spectacular view of the SGV, but it was smoggy to see Los Angeles. The easy, but challenging part was getting back down. I still have to work on my traction since I don't balance well. Going back down was about 20-30 minutes. Geez..two hours up and 30 minutes down. I slipped a couple times and it was in areas where the trail narrows. Plus, it was on areas where there was hundred feet drop. I wasn't scared, just I was too cautious where I was stepping. We met a lot of friendly people up and down the mountain. However, there were two guys were passed us and just shouted some random thing. They knew they wanted attention or something. Whatever...I am enjoying my day. Overall, it was an excellent park and I can officially mark this hike off my list. A couple thousand more places to hike. WOW i had so much fun today at this epic uphill hike trail. Been hiking all weekend, decided to look for something closer and found hellman park located at whittier, did not think about it much at all because its whittier. How can secluded can it get. Arrived at the hellman park parking, good amount of parking, its a bit steep to enter and to exit so please know how to maneuver. Drive sideways while going down. I digress. So I arrived around 4:30pm, few people were there and a few first timers also. Warning of closing the park when it hits sunset, no specific amount of time included. But i def had time to kill. Started with the hike and it was spacious, all dirt, no shade to start, ALL uphill, that kicked my ass but at the same time, it warms you up quick, I quickly turned around and I was stunned at the view. It was picture perfect. You can even see DTLA. It was an up and down hike, mostly up. Very clean spacious hike, and everything around it is just amazing. It looks intimidating everytime you look further ahead, but you just keep going and enjoy the fresh air. Hiking backwards on the uphills helped also. Finally arrived at the top with the graffitti tower and met a lot of cool people. Once at the top, you can see all the diff routes. Took about a hour while taking pics and snapchatting lol. Spent a good amount on top, just enjoying the view and how peaceful it is up there. Downhill were much quicker, dont go against the angle, it will tire you faster. I was almost skipping on the way down, lowkey dancing also haha Bring a towel, sunglasses, water, ipod and headphones forsure! What a blast! Distance wise? Im not quite sure, maybe a good 5-6 miles. Dont cheat yourself and hit the uphills. I'll be back maybe tom. Lol read more
Visit this hike on Memorial day, and we expected it to be packed, which it was. First off the hike was very wide and a lot of room, since it is outdoor the trails cannot be perfect, so it is uneven and run down. A lot of people today with all different types of physiques plus children and fathers carrying babies on their backs (kudos!). My one pet peeve, please leash your dog and pick up after your dog or at least move it away from the middle of the trail. The trail is like 15 ft wide, the poop does not have to be in the middle.. Anyways- This hike is doable and there are options from steep or even ground (steady incline). Once you get to the top of probably the fourth hill, you can see the temple on your right. Great for butt and thighs, challenge yourself and try running up a hill, then take a break :) read more

One of my favorite hikes, just wish there was a little more trees for shade. I've found that obviously coming earlier in the mornings, or around 6:30 in the evening is best for beating the packed parking. Watching the sunset is always a awesome sight you don't want to miss. On another note, it's sad that people toss their water bottles and other trash on the trails. Please do not litter. Pick up after yourself and respect the wilderness and Mother Nature. read more

Another one of my favorite places to hike and train. The climb up might be a little much of inexperienced hikers so come prepared with plenty of water. I come here year round, but the best tube to come I'd in the spring and winter as that's when it's the greenest. The trail starts from the parking lot to the right. One of the other entrances is blocked off do the trail starts to the right. The ascent is steady until you get smacked with the view I've kick ass hill. The easier route is the Mariposa trail to the left, but take that trail down. At the top if the hill is another fork. Take it to the left for more hill fun! Continue on and take the middle path to yet another hill. The short hike up and down, and yet another fork. Take it to the left and it's one Sandy hill. Atop this hill you are greeted with a nice panoramic view of the LA Basin. DTLA can been seen in the distance on a clear day. The temple in Rose Hills is also visible from here. This hill also forks to the left and right (surprising huh? ) and you will reach one of two water towers. Coming up the hill, to the left is a nice descent down but the easier water tower is easy to get to from here. Take the trail to all the way down till you reach asphalt. There's a peace road that leads to a dead end do skip that. Another trail is found along the gate that surrounds the building. It eventually leads to a small sanctuary and residential area. Nice place to chill before heading back. The way back to the entrance used to loop closer to this water tower, but it's been closed for some time now. Back tracking, if you were coming up the Sandy hill and went to the right, you are greeted with an easier descent. The trail to this secondary water tower is a bit more of a challenge as it's another nice hill to climb. The Turnbull trailhead can be found on this part of the trail. Continue past it until you reach the hill. Take the hill up to the tower. All in all its a pretty straight forward. Despite all the forks it's pretty easy to navigate and it's pretty hard to get lost. I usually take the Mariposa trail back down for a change if scenery. It's a great place to bring your dog but bring doggy bags to clean up after them. This place loses a star though because of the, lack of parking. The lot is small do be prepared to park on the streets. If you park on the streets though, PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS! Must of the surrounding neighborhoods have "Permit Parking Only" signs and a ticket is the last thing you need to end an awesome work out. Another reason for the lost star is the fact that the other entrance had been closed for quite some time it was an, awesome way to get back from the first water tower described. Still, it doesn't take from the challenge of the hike. If you want a good challenge, definitely try out this hike! read more
The more strenuous hike in Whittier's back yard. This one unlike the others is a constant up and down. I believe it has the steepest climb in one section of its path. Nonetheless, it's a great hike that can be a little exhausting. The views you can get at it's highest point are well worth the climb. read more

I like coming here for a great workout! Prepare yourself for an intense incline, these hills are steep and challenging but don't worry If your not up for it they even have an easier trail where its more of a relax nature walk. I wouldn't recommend hiking alone or away from a crowd of people because I've seen coyotes in the past and snakes so its always best to walk in a group and before Sunset! You will get Fined by a ranger if they catch you hiking past sunset. Also There parking structure is small , so most likely you will need to park on the street but make sure to read the signs in some areas you need a ( Parking Permit ) so be prepared to park a couple of blocks away! Pros: Intense Workout, Beautiful View, Staying Fit, Dog Friendly Cons: You may see snakes, Lizards, Bunnies, Coyotes, Insects, Dog Poop TIP: No Restrooms, So make sure to go before and prepare yourself for an hour or more of a Hike. read more
Long time resident of the area, first time visitor. I must say, the trails exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be doing this hike again. We decided to begin at the Sycamore Canyon trail head off of Workman Mill Road. Parking is available in the lot, but fret not, there is plenty of parking on Workman if you don't snag a spot. The trail started off really easy with plenty of cacti and canyon views. There is a crazy smell during the first ten minutes. Might just be the standing water. Then, the switchbacks appeared. The glutes got a nice workout and soon enough, you will reach the top and have a great view. There are many trail options to choose from and the paths are well traversed. Signs, they are aplenty, so you will not get lost. If you start at Sycamore and continue along Mariposa, you'll end up at the northern end of Greenleaf in Uptown. We finished there, walked to Uptown, ate breakfast, and Ubered back to the car. It really was a great way to spend the morning. Everyone says to watch out for ticks, myself included. However, we doused ourselves in deet and continued on. No ticks. Still, to be on the safe side, inspect yourself, wash your clothes immediately, and take a really hot shower. Enjoy! read more

My girlfriend Christine. and I went for are first hike ever in the steep hills of Hellman Wilderness Park. We both had a tough time making it to the top, its not only beautiful, and peaceful, its a challenging hike. and with out us planing it we had the pleasure of viewing are first sunset together, it was a perfict evening..... The hills of Hellmen. are very convenient to the residence of Whittier. and if you are out of shape or a smoker, good luck to you and make sure you have plenty of water and sun screen. I hope you will also give your self a chance of enjoying the beautiful, yet challenging hills of Whittier. and if you time it Just right u might also have the pleasure of the incredible sunset from the top of Hellmen. The view, weather, sunset, and you Christine. next to me was amazing.... And I hope that one day when I'm old and gray you will be walking, Jogging, and hiking with me. For are lives together sweetheart will be like the hills of Hellmen. beautiful, peaceful, and at times rough and challenging, but together we will always make it to the top Love. read more

HELLMANS is steep. That's the first thing about this hike. I've done it so many times& it has gotten easier. It's fun and works out your hammys& quads as you go up& calves as you come down. Great 2ish miles. read more

Always love coming to this trail because it kicks your butt! Plus for myself it's a great post baby workout! My baby enjoyed the view and ride as well. Trails are a lil rough but if you have a jogging stroller you can make it avoid the easy trails for a better workout and challenge! read more
Parking: FREE! There are not much space in the parking lot so it's best to park on the street Distance: - Take a look at the map for more details - 1.2m one way (if you plan to get to the top and walk back only) - 2.9 m round trip (if you take the loop) - So there are 2 paths you can take to get to the top - If you want to see the graffiti water tower, then you should take the trail on the right! After all the junction, you'll keep right to see the water tower from far away - There are so many paths to take once you get to the top, so it gets confusing sometimes. It all depends what you want to see that's all! - Overall, the view was just okaaay, nothing specular. On a clear day, you could see the whole LA like in my pictures! - There are some climbing up and it could get tiring but as long you take it slow, it's really not that bad! read more

Yes. The ranger will lock you in. Learn from my experiences
Is it safe to go alone? Run into snakes a lot?
Yes! During the day there are plenty of other joggers and walkers. I would recommend you go with a partner but it is safe! Safe trails!
Is a jogger okay to use on these trails? Or would I be better off using a baby carrier?
I've seen people with strollers and it seems somewhat safe, some areas I think it would hard to use but not impossible to get around, your choice if you'd rather use a carrier.
Due to the restricted hours can you still go before 9 am?
Trails open at 9am at Hellman Park. You can get on the County's trail at sunrise if you like. 3283 Workman Mill Rd. – Rio Hondo Staging Area Visit www.HabitatAuthority.org
Will it be open tomorrow at 630am to hike?
Not is you plan to park on the Greenleaf and Beverly entrance. It opens at 9 am
Does it get busy like the other mainstream hiking trails?
No it doesn't get busy. Before hand it would but now there's restricted hours. Also a lot of the paths have been cut off which is cool if you're looking to have a good workout. No getting around the steep hills anymore.
