The rating is mostly because of the new times that they have put on this trail. Previously, it was upen sunrise to sunset, which makes way more sense than the new 9-5 time they have now. Especially during summer, when the heat is scorching early morning till late evening, a sunrise-sunset time is perfect! The hike is just ok; For the first mile you have a good steep hill and after that its a breeze. It was recently cleaned up very well, so that is a plus! I am a Whittier Local and have been forced to take the Turnbull trail now because of the crazy dumb hours. Hopefully the city reconsiders and realizes their mistake. read more

This is by far one of the closest hikes to home, I love coming here when I want to get a good quick hike. I went this Sunday and it was closed due to the rain over the week, but we found another entrance down Beverly which is a different hike site. I loved the trail, a very open feeling and being able to feel the wind. The first incline is probably the worst, after that it's just multiple smallish inclines. There's many different ways to go, but straight you'll be able to see the water tower. There's two, one with the view of LA and one like I said if you keep going straight. 4 stars because I really think Whittier is being to anal about the graffiti. Everyone loves going to be able to take pictures with beautiful artwork, only to constantly see it painted over/gate added and now barb wire. The water tower is basically like, the main attraction. My friend asked me to go on a hike with her during the summer. I didn't know what I was in for. This is definitely a very challenging hike since it gets steep very quick. Great workout! Parking here can be a pain. There aren't many parking stalls for the amount of people that hike here everyday. It gets very busy since it's so close to many homes. So most people park in the streets, however you must read the signs and be sure you're able to park there so you won't get towed. I go about two blocks out to find parking here in the residential areas. I'm sure it sucks for the homeowners. This hike gets strenuous every quick. So once you get passed that part the rest is fairly easy until you get to the water tower. Then it becomes challenging again. Be sure to bring water. I forgot my water and I went during the middle of the day. Big mistake! Also be sure to stretch before. Have fun and happy hiking :) read more

45 degree inclines and a great butt kickin. You have options to avoid the treacherous, monstrous, steepness by firkin off to the detour at the forks but warning: they are narrower and along the edge/cliffs. It tends to be empty during the lunch hour but can get populated around sunset. Do watch out for the mountain bikers. There few but fly down fast and if ur not paying attention...well,... Bring water and if ur traveling more than an hour in u might want to bring a snack. U can easily burn more than a thousand calories if u make a while of it. I've been hiking Hellman for many years so I know it well. While the review is negative I feel this is more of a warning to ladies more than anything. Since the popularity has grown over the years for Hellman, the safety has not. This used to be a safe location for women to hike with a friend, group or solo, however, this is no longer the case. I have witnessed many verbal and bold physical advances towards women. 100% of the advances were both scary and unwanted. It seems that more and more men are showing up because the upswing of women coming to hike. I witness men waiting for women and then following them up into the hill trying to get into a conversation and also while leaving I have witnessed men follow women all the way to their cars. We come here to hike and de-stress, this is no longer happening. If you are a women coming to Hellman you must be extra cautious. Also cell service is a rarity so calling for help is not an option. Ascend the hill until you reach the top, where the road plateaus ever so slightly and makes you think that you are done with the hardest part; look up to see an even steeper hill waiting for you and cry out in anguish/almost shit your pants. When you reach the fork at the top of the hill (the hardest part is now finally over!), turn left onto Rattlesnake Ridge Trail, which will lead you all the way to the graffitied water tank; enjoy the views of El Lay... or not. 7. This trail is in the heart of Whittier and there was so many prospective hikers assembling at the bottom of the trail head. I came here with a few of my friends about 3 months ago and thought I should write a review to this place since is an epic trail. The initial incline was about a 35 degree incline and really gets you warmed up. This trail appeals to mountain bikers so beware and stay out of the middle of the path. There are narrow walk ways along the mountain side, be extra cautious in those areas. We got to the top and there is a pleasant surprise: a water tower that was covered in graffiti. It was cool and artistic. You also have a view of a Buddhist temple as you sat at the top; this was a humbling sensation of how small we really are. I would definitely recommend this trail. This hike is a tough one. Expect an uphill journey. Very little shade to cover you so bring some water and weat your sunscreen. Trail is very dusty so where shoes you don't care to get dirty. I've been here a couple of times now. I have to say it seems like a small trail, but those inclined are pretty steep. It looks a bit different from when I first started going, but the workout is STILL THE SAME lol. I've seen people with their dogs, therefore it's dog friendly. I usually go with a partner because I don't like trails alone. With that said if you like to workout alone, I feel there is always people around so you won't be alone (for safety). It was my first time hike here, I read the yelpers' reviews before I made my plan. My friend and I arrived at the park around 7:30am and parked on Greenleaf ave, since the park opens at 9am and the nearby blocks and Beverly Blvd require parking permits. We walked down Greenleaf ave and made a left on Beverly Blvd, and walked all the way to the side entrance( it took about 15-20 minutes) From the side entrance, We started from the Turnbull Canyon Trail, and kept left when there is a "Fork" , so We continued with Sumac Trail, there were some cliffs along the way, but almost no shade. The weather in early morning was not bad, there was breeze along the way, which made the hiking more enjoyable. At end of Sumac trail, there was another "Fork". To the right, it is more challenging with high elevation, where the water tower is; to the left, it is much easier, it goes to Rattlesnake Trail and Peppergrass trail. Rattlesnake is a one-way trail, where ends at another tower. There are many bikers and runners. We went by Rattlesnake trail. Peppergrass trail is the one that goes all the way back to Hellman Park. I didn't know this until I saw the map in Hellman Park on my way back to my car. I think it is better to walk a loop than return the same way as I started. I didn't challenge myself since it was the first time I went there. The trails I have hiked were pretty easy for me, and We made 6 miles in 2.5 hours. There is a lot of dry grass along the way. I am assuming the view should be more beautiful in winter and spring. I will definitely be back and try other trails in this area. read more

I'm not fit (like at all lol). So if you're anything like me and you for some miraculous reason decide to go hiking at Hellman Park, you will continuously ask yourself, "who's idea was this again?!" or cry loudly, "f dis. I'm turning around!!!!!!!" Heavy incline. I mean HEAVY incline. Like your thighs will burn. Your booty will sting. So some of you may wonder, "Kay, would you do the Hellman hike again????" My answer is HELL NO MAN. LOL. No. My bff kept saying she wanted to make it all the way to the water towers. Here's the thing. Maybe I'm a brat or maybe I was dying/totally unfit for this trail or maybe both lol, but I really don't think the end point water towers to the trails are very "rewarding". Given that this trail has heavy incline for a huge portion of the trail, I felt like reaching the highest point of the trail was the most rewarding part of this hike & not the water towers. When you get to the top of the highest point, absorb the view! It feels soo good!!!! NOTE: WATCH WHERE YOU STEP & LISTEN TO RATTLES. It could be a snake. So be cautious!!!!! We heard rattles & didn't think much of it, but luckily a lady behind us heard it too & warned us to step away because it was a rattle snake near by in the plants. Overall, yes I'm unfit, sometimes I can be a drama queen lol, but all of that aside, this trail was actually good. It was a bit tough due to the very many high inclines, but with breaks & water, it's doable. I would recommend this hike to anyone looking for a lower half workout. read more

If you come in the spring, you'll be welcomed with beauty! If you come in the summer, you'll probably think you're stepping into Death Valley, CA. You DON'T need a gym membership to lose weight. You need Hellman Park, 5 times a week. You'll have a fantastic booty after 5 weeks. Guaranteed!!! (assuming we forget the tamales, pupusas and tortillas!) It's a beautiful hiking location. If the smog is dorment, you get a beautiful view of all of LA and some Orange County. You can bring your dog here too, but be careful. My golden retriever has acute hip dysplasia so it could be really painful for her. So I don't bring her as much as I used to. If you have jumpy hyper dog, bring him/her along ! She'll sleep like an angel at night. read more

This is probably one of the shortest hikes I've done where I actually get a great workout. The hills can be a doozy, especially if you stay on left. Their are two trails. One on the right for the lazy or people who are not as fit. One on the left for the people who are fit or think they are. Don't run up the hills when your hung over, it's not a happy feeling. Though it does cure your hangover. Negatives; small parking lot, lots of poo on the trails, not very scenic - your final landmark are graffitied water coolers. If you are looking for a high intensity hike that will work out your glutes, look no further. Hellman Park is one of LA's finest. Not as popular as Runyon yet not comparable to a ghost town hike, Hellman Park is a good option between the two. There are four steep hill inclines-the first is questionable, the second you will feel like giving up, and the third and fourth are easy after completing the first two. It's dog friendly, but be warned, only take doggies that can handle it. My fur baby had to be carried after the first incline. For most people the end of the trail is the water tower, just remember there are multiple trails and the water tower isn't the only thing to see. I highly suggest the Mariposa trail. read more

Like many others, I decided to change my lifestyle and become more active and to also explore my surroundings so what better way than to visit this much talked about trail. I was completely out of shape so I started with the "easier" route which is slightly to the right of the main trail. I had a tough time my first few times but I eventually got better and better and now I can run the "easier" trail and now I go mostly to the main, more challenging route which gives me an awesome workout every time! Everyone is pretty friendly for the most part .. but my main concern is the damn DOG POOP .. EVERYWHERE!!! that would be my only complaint about this trail, so many irresponsible dog owners! Speaking of irresponsible dog owners, might I add that most of the time I visit this trail with one of my friends that owns a Pit bull and wow sometimes the things people say are offensive!! We have gotten a few weird and rude comments just because we are walking a pit bull .. the funny part is all the comments that were made were by owners of a chihuahua that was more aggressive than my friends pit bull. As a matter of fact my friends pit bull is not aggressive at all and will run away from a bunny lol but I guess I will just have to blame society and the perception of pit bulls in the media. I just had to add that in because we couldn't help but laugh at the comment this lady made the other day. She was walking in the opposite direction and as she was coming near us she was holding her little poodle back with all her power because it was growing and barking at my friends 100 lb. pit bull and I look at "Jaxx", my friends pit bull .. and he was just looking at the poodle with a blank stare .. like "uhhhh okay" and continued walking .. as she gets really close to us she says "CAN YOU GET YOUR DOG!?? YOUR DOG IS CHARGING MY DOG!!!" lol my friends dog was on a leash so i don't know what she meant by "get your dog" .. I suppose she wanted us to pick him up or something lol she continued walking past us with her oh so "friendly" poodle and we were shocked! We were like what just happened lol .. anyway! that's what I meant by most people are friendly .. I just had to add our experience in because it was weird and funny lol ANYWAYS .. the water tower and the view from the top is very rewarding! My husband and I came at 9:05am on a Monday and the parking lot was already full. We were lucky to find street parking. What a workout! I've recently fallen in love with Peter's Canyon, but needed something different to spice up my hiking routine. I came here on a whim on a Monday morning. Parking, as everyone has said, is a hassle. Just pay special attention to the signs... on Mondays and Tuesdays the streets in the surrounding areas have street sweeping as well as the "Permit Parking Only" areas. I found parking on Milton street and just walked down to the trailhead. Not too bad. Anyway... these hills are killer. Such a good workout for your butt and legs. Either go before the sun is at its peak or you'll be dripping sweat. And prepare to get dirty! I always bring a pair of sandals I can change into. No complaints here! read more

Do you like walking up hill? Do you like walking up steep, dusty hills? Well this hike is for you! This is a great hike for those looking for a glute burn and beautiful vistas (just make sure that you are going up on a clear day). The whole family came on this hike including a three year old who just wanted to slide down the hill (I'm sure after a rain it would be a muddy delight ) . This is a strenuous hike. My dad, who is not fit nor owns a pair of sneakers, came along and he did it (in his business casual loafers), but we had to have a few breaks. The path is wide and good for people with dogs. Just be sure to leash them because there is wildlife they might want to chase (it's rare, but still there). You can tell that the community is also doing a good job restoring the trail and planting some beautiful cacti along the path. read more

After reading many reviews of the hike I was a little bit nervous of hard to find parking, crowds and trash everywhere. However, once I was there I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it! Parking was not difficult at all. Yes, the parking lot is small but there are many residential parking options that aren't far from the beginning of the trail. We went on a Wednesday morning around 10:30am. There were many groups of people, but was not overcrowded by any means. People were friendly and considerate in terms of sharing the trails. There was dog do-do on parts of the trail, but nothing too horrible as described in other reviews. The beginning of the trail is pretty intense, however, as you keep going the trail splits into a more relaxing trail or allows you to continue with the intensity. We took the more relaxed option that included beautiful scenery and less people. Overall, we enjoyed the hike and would definitely do it again! read more

It's high time I finally wrote a review for Hellman park. I've been going here for years now, sometimes every week. The parking is limited in the lot (about 8 spaces) but you can park in the adjacent neighborhoods, the trails are well maintained, and on a clear day you can stop and see the ocean to your left, downtown LA in the middle and snow on the foothills on your right. If you take the switchback route it *can* be a bit strenuous, but not hard at all as long as you stop and take breaks. Once you get to the top of the hills, you can take one of many extension trails to turnbull canyon, a steeper hike up to the water tower (4.75 miles total RT) or make your way down in a doable but rewarding three mile loop. On the weekends, there are alot of families, BMX bikers, and people with their dogs out and you can see squirrels and birds along the way. There are snakes, ex rattlesnakes, but I haven't had a problem yet. It's a great place to go anytime of year but during springtime, the hills are green and lush with pretty wildflowers everywhere. Whether you are a first-time hiker, experienced or just want to work out, I think Hellman park is the perfect local hiking spot. Once your hike is over, don't forget to head down to Mimoo's cafe on Greenleaf in old town Whittier for a great outdoor brunch! read more

A breezy Fall Sunday around 9-10AM! I originally wanted to do Turnball Canyon, but I heard the trails intertwined, and decided to go to this one. First things first: it is NOT hard to find. Typically, I have such a curse when finding trails and parking. But luckily, this was not hard to find at all. There is a designated location/address and parking available. Not to mention right behind downtown Whittier or a popular area (Greenleaf Ave.) There are parking in the neighborhood right before you hit the location - be careful because in some areas a permit is required. However, if you drive towards the trail/park, there is a designated parking area, but very limited. I decided to take my boyfriend on his first hiking experience. The weather was just perfect, not too hot nor to cold, and not crowded like most trails I been on either. There are multiple routes if you continue on the trail - first you will hit a big hill. After you go up that hill there are different routes you can take. The routes we ended up taking lead us to a dead end - which is the trail you go towards Los Angeles, more West and if you see a water plant, go BACK. If you continue forward, you will end up in a neighborhood that is far from the park entry. It is not as green as most trails I been in especially in the LA/626 area, however, it is such a great workout for your hamstrings and buns. I kid you not, my butt ached for a good two days. If I had to rate this trail being an ass-kicker or not, it would probably rank second after Garcia Trail, forsure. It's such a different vibe from LA trails though: no dogs, people are very to themselves and predominantly people from a Hispanic background, and a lot of dirt, barely any greens in sight! read more

Keeps closing, to many issues on this Hill. Every ranger bringing up small incidents and they end up closing for weeks after for nothing, sucka for us not knowing wether is open or not it's a waste drive up or a waste of gas. read more

This place is great if you want to train for your races. Hellman Park has a ton of inclines that you can run or walk up. Once you've conquered the incline you get a beautiful view of the city if it's not a smoggy day. There is a small parking lot. I say don't waste your time sitting in your car waiting for a spot to open. If the whole goal is to go run or hike, park a little further down the road and get a few more steps in. I don't understand why people would wait in their car and miss out on being outside. Watch for the signs that say permit parking only. They're BIG, so if you miss it, I don't know what to say. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and have a great time! There is no shade, so if it's a hot day I'd recommend come early in the morning or a little closer to the evening. read more

Here's my review from my hike When we first arrived it was mid morning and the parking lot was full maybe because it only has like three parking spots but there was ample parking on the street. The hike consist of steep hills followed by an even steeper hill and it seems like the hills will never end but don't worry it does end and once on top you get a nice view. I would say this hike is not difficult but can still make you sweat. If you feel like cheating a hill (i don't know why you would want to) there is paths that will allow you to bypass a hill Two warnings: first -It is very possible that you will encounter a tarantula. We spotted one during our hike and yelpers have posted a few pictures too. Second warning- dog owners do not pick up after their dog! who does that?? So i constantly found myself checking where I stepped. I love dogs and happy they allow dogs on this trail but really pick up after your dog!! happy hiking read more

As far as trails go, I would probably rate this one as being medium in difficulty. My first time going to this trail was my first time hiking at all. It whooped my a$$! the last couple of times I've been there, I did pretty well. There's a nice view of a buddhist temple once you get close to the end. From the top, you can even see all the way to LA. It's a great way to get your cardio in. I've never seen any creepy wildlife either. I definitely recommend this trail. read more

Just completed this hike and I'm truly shocked I didn't die. The inclines are steep but with multiple trail options to the water tower you can choose the level of difficulty you're trying to achieve. The views are spectacular and the breeze makes for an amazing workout in the early morning. If you plan to go around mid day I'd suggest taking a hat and sun screen as only one of the trails has tree coverage. I also just realized that now all the streets around the park are by permit only so please keep that in mind to avoid tickets or having your car towed. Other than that enjoy the rigorous climbs hellmans has to offer. read more

Great place to get a workout. Enter thru Hellman Park, head right and go up the steep hill. If you can run it, even better. I'm not there yet, but I don't stop and it's a killer workout. Go up the other two hills and run to the graffiti covered water tower. Once there, you take a breather and start running down the back side, head back in same direction and run down towards Turnball canyon entrance. It's a great workout and only takes about 1 hour. If you take your dogs, please clean up after them. No trash bins so be prepared to carry with you. Enjoy!!! This is the best find ever. read more

I don't think any of the people that hike here with their animals pick up any of the dog waste. 75% of the people using the park have those loud blue tooth speakers (Its not exactly a serene sound) Also I don't think anyone has ever heard of not littering. Trash was everywhere. Also mountain bikers use the trails too. Half are courteous and share the trail the other half will run you over. Upsides are a good amount of hills if you're looking for a challenge, the less traveled trails are nice and you can cover a lot of ground pretty quickly. This park could be a gem but with how people treat it its definitely not as pretty as it once was. We won't be back anytime soon. read more
