Hands down -Best place to eat in the Davis area! Service is awesome, food is delicious, atmosphere is cool and clean! We had a table of 8 and everyone got something different and shared a bit. It was all great, but The Admiral everyone loved the most! The Gravity check was a close 2nd! But seriously all the meals were good, there was not one that we didn't like. The bean dip is a must! Nice portions, great atmosphere but the food seems like it is made by someone who likes having a restaurant but is not a chef or experienced cook...someone who likes the idea. If you want to try this place I suggest you get a bunch of small things and maybe you will like something. The side of chips and guacamole was very good but it was filled with chopped onions...maybe you like lots and lots of onions. I got a black bean and rice burrito and it was ok....the beans and tortilla were fine but the rice had a strange flavor...I could not finish it. I wish I had just bought some black beans, salsa and chips and ate at home but sometimes you don't want to cook and you hope a restaurant will just be ok...and often they are not. I think the people who give great reviews are drinking a lot and or are just loving the space...maybe they found something they like..the three of us three times have not. I say read the great reviews and go in there with a positive vision...drink and lot and you will like it. read more

We came to this place on a tip that they could do gluten-free. My burrito was huge, incredibly fresh, and great. My girlfriend's burrito bowl was gluten free and pretty nice too. Friendly service (although a little but slow). Check out the men's bathroom if you go. read more

A great place. Not exactly the "Mexican" food you might expect in California, but nevertheless delicious and original. Hellbender does some local takes on the burrito which are really great. The atmosphere is also terrific and the servers are all very cool. Top this experience off with some good beer on tap from Mountain State Brewery in neighboring Thomas. Visited this cool restaurant after receiving a tip from the bartender at the resort we were staying at in Canaan Valley last week. Really good burritos, but my wife and I shared the Green Chili and it stole the show. Excellent flavor with just enough kick. Nice beer selection and great crowd. When you think about West Virginia, do images of massive, great tasting burritos come to mind. After eating here they will. Along Rt. 32 is the town of Davis, West Virginia, home of Hellbender Burritos. While not ethnic by any means it is an American twist on burritos and quesadillas. Appetizers include chips and salsa, guacamole or queso, quesadillas and other rotating morsels. The chips are slightly salted round tortilla chips. For the main course there are pre-designed burritos, make your own burritos, tacos and quesadillas. Some of the specialty burritos include the Admiral, a burrito stuffed with chicken, bacon, beans, guacamole, salsa, cheese and lettuce, the Hoodoo Voodoo, the Face Plant, the Lost Hiker, the Hellbender, Goofy Foot, Shovel Head, Gravity Check and the Gendarme. Some of these contains items such as barbecue sauce, Fritos, TVP, broccoli and cilantro lime rice. The Admiral is a avalanche of diverse flavors hitting into you, in a good way. Desserts include grasshopper cheesecake, a mint chocolate chip cheesecake, and key lime pie. All of the ingredients are fresh and this shows. The chicken is chunks of grilled chicken, The guacamole made fresh daily and the fresh squeezed lemonade goes well with anything on the menu. While the pre designed burritos are amazing, the depth of choices lends itself to the make your own burrito. The atmosphere is friendly. In the front there is a wood burning stove for the cold winters. In the back there is a fish tank full of fishing lures, and a large wooden statue of a hellbender holding a burrito. This place has huge servings for a great price. I think my family of 4 could have made a meal of just one burrito. The shrimp hellbender is definitely something different (and surprisingly good). Just came through today with my family and we called ahead of time and the people couldn't say how long of a wait there was. We arrived and they still couldn't give us an estimate until a certain waitress showed up. It was over an hour later and when we were ordering the waitress was not friendly. We will never know if the food was good. The service was just plain rude. We walked in this tiny establishment eager to try something new other than the food we pack for the cabin/skiing. The female server told us it was seat yourself. There was a tiny table located right next to the door which it was cold and windy out so she told us to take the table in the bar that could sit 4. After we were given menus and had waited about 5 minutes we knew what beers we wanted to try and a male server came to the table and said "yeah we need you to move to another table, maybe something smaller is open upstairs. We have a party of 6 waiting for a table (they came in after us) and he just stared at us until we collected our coats/purse and we walked straight out the door. Never have I been told I had to give up a table that we were already sitting at and ready to order for a group that had just walked in the door! Especially since he didn't even know if any other table was still open! In a town the size of if you blink you would miss it customer service should be your first priority, we would never return! read more

LOVE this place! The beer is always good, the burritos are amazing, the atmosphere is chill and the service is always quick and courteous. Horrible Service and we will never know if the food is good. We were told there was a 45 minute wait for a table of 8 so we asked if we could order to go. They said yes order from the bar. We waited on the ramp to get to the bar 5 minutes and the bartender said to go upstairs and look at the menus first. After going upstairs we came down and tried to order and bartender said we could not do separate orders which shouldn't be a big issue since we are two families and can order together. We waited, waited, waited standing at the bar area that they directed us to order from. After 10 minutes we asked if we can order now and he just looked and said sure. So we said we almost had to leave due to bad service. The bartender then said we don't need your service then. So after 30+ minutes we left upset after a horrible experience. It's too bad because we do want to support local restaurants. Please be honest with the restaurant if you choose to ignore this review. They need to learn how to treat customers and people in general. Good food will only take you so far. read more

Today we came upon an urge to have burritos today, we made a decision to come upon hell benders, we walked in and saw loads of people chattering in the distance, we walked up to a server and they told us for 8 people to dine in, we woild have to have a 45 minute wait, we came upon a decision to just take our food to go. The server told us to go upstairs until we made our decision, then after our long decision we went downstairs and we had to have a 15-20 min. wait and then the adults came in and had another 15-20 min. wait until my mom budged at the bartender and told him "can we please order our food" and the bartender responded and said "sure" and so my mom said " because i was about to leave be ause of poor service" then the bartender said " then we dont need your service". My mom left right then and there and told us that she isn't coming back" THEY HAD HORRIBLE SERVICE, HORRIBLE WAIYING ROOM, NO RESPECT, NO TABLES. read more

We've been traveling to Canaan Valley, WV since 1998. It is not a booming metropolis, which is what we love about it, and this means there aren't a whole lot of places at which to eat. Hellbenders opened a couple years ago. Our experiences before this last trip (in May 2011) were uneven at Hellbenders, skewing toward disappointing, with indifferent service and mediocre food. But wait! This time we visited Hellbenders twice and found it quite good. Our servers were very friendly and on the ball, and the food was delicious. The burritos are gigantic and, while not wildly memorable, taste great. We tried the smoked trout quesadilla and it was a revelation with gently smoked white fish and mellow cheese between grilled tortillas, served with a side of chunky, spicy salsa - very good. The bean crisp appetizer is also wonderful and makes for a more moderate sized meal for one. Kids menu items are simple and good; my son's burrito had plentiful large pieces of chicken breast - no skimping. Hellbenders was willing to "hold that" and "could you put that on the side" when asked. The local beers were great. Desserts (key lime pie, chocolate cheesecake) were yummy, if a tad small. Overall, solid performance on two visits and we are very likely to return, the next time we find ourselves in beautiful Canaan Valley! read more

Tucker County is one of my favorite spots in West Virginia and this restaurant just makes me love it that much more. What a find! Hellbender serves up massive burritos and local/regional brews. The first time I tried coming here I was with a few other people and it was (I think) a Saturday night, kind of late, during ski season. No open tables and we would have had to wait about 45 minutes for one. Bummer. I came back a few months later when my mom was visiting on a weekday around lunch time. The restaurant was nearly empty so we were seated immediately. We started with chips and guacamole. The chips were nothing special but the guacamole was some of the best I've ever had, and you get a lot of it, too. I got the Faceplant burrito, which is basically a walking taco stuffed inside a burrito: seasoned ground beef (you can get a vegetarian substitute, too), queso, rice, sour cream, pickled jalapenos, and Fritos chips. So good, but also huge; I had to take home half of it (it didn't reheat well, but it was still tasty). I got a porter from their tap and it was excellent. The set-up of the restaurant is a little strange since the host stand is in the back near the bar instead of near the door, but that's my only complaint. Super vibe-y place with tasty specialty and make-it-yourself burritos and local craft beer? Yes please. I'll be back whenever I next visit Tucker County. read more

First ate here in May '12 and have made it a point to visit every time I am camping in the nearby Dolly Sods Wilderness. The atmosphere is an awesome blend of rustic local stuff with some hipster like influences. The service is very good, the beer selection is great and the drafts were mostly from the local brewing co(big plus for me), and the servings definitely live up to the "huge" size that most people have mentioned. The food size is probably the places best aspect after quality and atmosphere. As a 5'10", 210 pound football player, power-lifter, and distance runner I typically order 2 entrees at any restaurant to get a filling meal, yet at Hellbenders I can get by on one Admiral burrito with an extra side of meat. The chips without complimentary salsa substituted for coleslaw(good fresh slaw) is a bit odd, but for 1.00 to add a side of salsa this is hardly a deal breaker. After living in Southern Cal for several years, where there is a great burrito joint in every neighborhood, I can honestly say Hellbenders is truly one of the best and most innovative regarding the combinations on their menu. In addition to the great staff and atmosphere, the local crowd is also filled with interesting and friendly characters. Go ski, hike, or bike, then get hungry and head to Hellbenders. This place is no Chipotle: because it is not a monotonous, inauthentic attempt at tex-mex by a chain of McDonald's owned franchises. Easily the best Burrito joint within 5 hours of Washington DC. read more
