Fun place with outstanding food and great beers. The place was packed at 6 pm on a Saturday night. The hubs and I sat at the tiny bar and ordered food. A little uncomfortable for eating dinner, but the bartender was great. We drank the local beers from Mountain State Brewing Company, and the bartender recommended an IPA for hubs to try. I had the Gendarme, which is like a cheesesteak in a burrito and the hubs had the shovel head with pulled pork. Huge burritos--prepare to leave stuffed. We stayed in Canaan Valley for about a week for mountain biking and hiking. The grocery store was limited, and no kitchen in the hotel so we had to eat out. This was the best place to eat by far. I only wish they had a larger menu. It almost reminds me of a gourmet Chipotle- you can choose burrito versus bowl. They also have tvs with different sports, which was greatly appreciated. read more

It would be a serious mistake to go to the Davis/ Thomas/ Canaan valley area without eating here at least once. We come to the area several times a year for weekend trips and having a hellbender burrito is an absolute must. It is frequently busy but service is quick and attentive. The menu is full of really interesting burrito options, or you can build your own. My husband and I visited this weekend on Saturday evening for dinner and on Sunday night for a couple of West Virginia beers. I requested quite a few changes to my dinner and was afraid the server would be annoyed, but he did not seem so at all. He wrote down all my requests and the food came out exactly as I requested it. I really wish we had a hellbender's in our hometown as we would eat there quite often. This place seems to be a favorite among locals. The decor is rustic, charming and welcoming. We spent some time at the bar speaking with the bartender who was wonderful. They made us feel welcome, chatted with us about the area, and were very knowledgeable about the beers they offer (a great selection by the way). I can't rave about this place enough. Went here roughly 10 years ago. Still to this day hands down my favorite burrito. Nothing crazy just the chicken Hellbender. Often inmates but never duplicated. I've managed to create my own at home that can at least take me back if I close my eyes but it is still not the OG Hellbender. Now that I have moved within 500 miles of Hellbenders I'm hoping to plan a weekend ride in the near future. Glad to see their still alive and kickin' ! read more

Visiting Davis area and stopped at Hellbender Burritos. Ordered what the menu described as a The Shovelhead "pulled pork barbecue" burrito. One would expect pulled pork to be lean shredded pork. Not so. Once served, the burrito contained large hunks of fatty pork and connective tissue (what I call gristle), camouflaged in rice within the burrito wrap. Literally inedible. Entirely disgusting. This matter was brought to the attention of the waitress, on the occasion of her obligatory inquiry as to my satisfaction. She grimaced, left the room, and upon returning, simply said all she could say was that she was sorry, and when, or if, I should ever return, perhaps I should try something else. Seriously. Then, she left the bill. I paid for the meal that I couldn't eat, didn't leave a tip, and vowed never to return. I advise others to do likewise. Wait staff should not inquire as to the guest's satisfaction with the food if there is no intention to do anything about dissatisfaction. Just saying sorry about your luck is not appropriate. The staff should have the authority to make a problem right, and to advocate on behalf of the guest if it cannot be corrected. Neither was done here. Just on the basis of this business having no regard for the satisfaction of the patron is reason enough to avoid it. Do not give these people your money. read more

Great spot, cool atmosphere, excellent beer selection, and bizarre-o world food. Other folks have commented that the chicken was tasteless, well, in a traditional sense, a lot of the food is just presented, the stacks and stacks of salsas, hot sauces and such are there for you to customize your food to your taste. The burritos are unlike any I've ever had anywhere else, and they are HUGE. We usually end up splitting one, as they, as stated, are gigantic. after banging around in the woods all day on your bike, or battling your way through the rhododendron thickets in deep snow on your xc skis, this is THE SPOT to refuel for the next day. It's a local favorite of the folks who live there, and that says pretty much all that needs saying. Davis is a town with a lot of great food, mediocre doesn't cut it here. It's a neat looking little place, but don't be fooled. The food is alright, but the service was awful. I stopped in with a group of friends and they wouldn't let us pay separately. Eventually, the owner sorted it out but our waitress would not let it go. She loudly bad-mouthed us in front of the entire restaurant. Then, she proceeded to complain about our "$3 tip" when we left her a $20 tip in total! She stormed through the place loudly complaining about us right in front of us and everybody else there. It was embarrassing. You can bet that we won't be back next time we go through Davis. read more
