Joined for lap swimming. When pool is open, it's usually almost perfect. BUT (and this is a big "BUT") management of the pool schedule is bad. Hours for lap swim posted on their website are usually not correct as pool is not open when hours posted say it is. Was told by front desk people their website is not accurate and I should only use their new 'app' to check hours. So I loaded app and have used that to check pool lap swim hours. Tried to swim on weekday last week. Checked app 2 hours prior and said lap swim open 1:00-5:00 pm. Arrived at 2:10, changed and got to pool deck at 2:15 only to be told "We are closing for 30 minutes from 2:30 to 3:00 today." Today, a Sunday, at 9:00 a.m. app says pool open for lap swim from 10:00-1:00 pm. Arrived at 11:00 only to find out pool is closed due to swim team practice. they are "very sorry" for my inconvenience. This has happened 4 or 5 times in past month. Frustrating to plan my day/week, drive to the YMCA, and show up only to find out pool is not available. Seems like this is happening more and more often in past 5-6 weeks. If only we could know when pool will be available for lap swim. Seems like this should not be that hard to do. Put someone in charge of schedule and posting updates. And, once hours posted, stick to that schedule. read more

If you are a swimmer, this is the gym to get membership with! There are several lanes with plenty of open swim time and Lane 1 is usually designated for walking and exercise. They even offer swim weights, boards, and noodles to use for aqua fitness. There are indoor racquetball courts, open gym for basketball and volleyball, an indoor track, fitness rooms with all kinds of weight and fitness equipment! The YMCA offers just about everything you might need or want in a gym. I really do love the YMCA! I have been a huge advocate for the "Y". And will continue to do so. My biggest complaint about this one would be the shortage of staffing, especially life guards! It seems many hours of swim time was closed due to lack of staffing! The soap in the shower stalls need to be checked and refilled regularly, which they clearly are not! And whomever goes in to turn on the sauna and steam room needs to make sure that they are actually on! It is such a pain to undress and step into a cold sauna or steam room, only to have to dress back up to go to the front desk to seek help. The biggest star removed was for the many times that I have had to kill bugs in the locker room before I could take a shower. It is disgusting and gives me the heebie jeebies! Someone please get rid of the bugs!! I want to give every Y that I attend a five-star rating, but unfortunately, this was not worthy of one. Come on guys! Let's step it up! read more

This YMCA/YWCA we go to is awesome! My husband and/or I go daily to the lap pool. He does the aqua boards class and I do my own Zumba workout to my music I have in my headphones. I can always get a lane and sometimes I share my lane because I don't use the whole lane. We go right when they open the pool and have no problem. The lap pool is very popular and always full at 5am! This is so good to see people making good use of our pools and they are always bustling with activity. Marshalltown has a golden egg with this Y where it is. If you haven't visited, please do. They offer SO much more than just the pools. read more

zero stars. I cancelled my membership with them 3 times and their still taking money out of my bank account which is theft. I had to close my bank account and open a new one because somehow disputing those charges doesn't work. Very bad move from a charity organization, best business practices do not go out the window because you receive donations. I really believed in what they stood for, but now that I know them to be crooked, I think the whole world should know and hopefully the next time someone cancels with them they will take it more seriously. read more

I had been using this Y as I've had time in between classes at Coe and I don't want to fight off all the students over lunchtime. I had forgotten how bad other gyms where until I went somewhere else today. This is a plate and weight place. Great upper body place. Never did legs here but pickings seemed a little slim. Wide selection of hammer and other machines. A few more leg pieces and this would be five star easy. read more

The facility itself is decent, no real complaints there. However, parking is usually a nightmare. Finding parking during peak hours (after work) is a struggle. I've had to park a couple blocks away before, and that's a concern being a young female after dark in that area of town - not worth it I think I've encountered ONE friendly staff member. When you walk in, you have an employee scan your card - well, most of them avoid eye contact with you as much as possible so you'll go to someone else, they aren't welcoming or friendly. When I ask what room a class is in, they treat me like I'm an idiot for asking. I know there is a daycare available, but I'd be curious to know if anyone actually uses it. Kids (young kids - under age 10) are running around, hanging out on the track, playing on the equipment, etc. This is a safety issue for them and a huge inconvenience when you're trying to use the track or equipment. A lot of young teens (I'd guess ages 13-16) are there to socialize. This is clear because they are not in gym clothes, they are hanging out on the VERY limited number of mats available (I think there are only 3 of them upstairs), etc. And I don't mean they're using said mats to exercise - they are hanging out with their friends, playing on their phones. GO HOME and do that. If you bring this to a staff member's attention, they do not want to deal with it and brush it off. Least helpful staff I've encountered in a long time. Considering your membership can be income based, it appears (yep, I'm being stereotypical but some things you can just tell) the majority of customers are paying very little - you would think they'd want to get some more paying members in there, but apparently not. read more

Very disappointed in the organization of the volleyball leagues. I've played here several years and it has gotten worse year after year. We are scheduled to play every week at the same time, but somehow the staff consistently forgets to set-up the nets and raise the basketball hoops until 10 minutes after start time. The communication between the staff and the teams is abysmal. This winter, the Y had canceled that evening's league due to weather and didn't even bother to alert the teams, and on multiple occasions, didn't even have a staff member on-site to open the building until 5 minutes before start time. read more

Love how they have a track! Definitely something you don't get at other gyms in the area. Pool is nice. Location is good. Nice facility and every Y has had great instructors and trainers. I did end up canceling though. Very expensive for outdated equipment. The staff here for whatever reason, was never the friendliest. They usually were rude or seemed like it was an inconvenience that you walked in the door. Hopefully that has changed. There were always teenagers in the way upstairs messing around. read more

I have been to a few gyms in the Cedar Rapids area, and the Downtown Y is great for a number of reasons: availability and kinds of classes offered, the size of the facilities is decent (although their parking doesn't come anywhere close to accommodating the volume of patrons), the sauna and steam rooms (most gyms don't have that) and the racquetball courts. So why 1 star? First, the parking issue is pretty ridiculous and unfortunately I'm not sure there is much they can do about it. Downtown real estate is getting gobbled up. Going to the gym at 8pm when it's desolate doesn't work for me, and apparently doesn't work for 1/2 of the Cedar Rapids population. Second, all those people taking up said parking areas? They're all in the gym, naturally; so many times there's simply not enough room to accommodate everyone who wants to use a machine or a space. In short: the place is usually super duper crowded. Everything's taken or in the least, highly concentrated. Third, and most important, is the staff doesn't seem to take privacy issues of cell phone or other tablet/electronic devices in the locker rooms seriously. That great sauna feature I mentioned earlier is terribly hard to enjoy when you've got someone coming into the sauna with their phone or iPad with them. It's a matter of privacy and a matter of tact. Am I missing something here?? WHY do you need your cell phones in the sauna? The sauna just isn't a place for watching YouTube videos, updating your Facebook status, dominating Flappy Bird or jamming out to Lady Gaga. And while we're on the subject, you do realize that the combination of heat and condensation is going to fry your phone, right? If you can't tell, I find this act of disregard for common courtesy and respect of privacy in an err, extremely "public" space to be extremely bothersome. So what's the Y got to do with it? There are signs posted throughout that cellphones/electronic devices are not to be used in the locker rooms and if someone sees this happening, to report it. As you can imagine, I did let the staff know about it happening in the sauna and they did absolutely nothing about it. For an hour I waited and when the hour passed and the status quo remained (yes, this same person was in the sauna the entire time on their device) I asked again if they had had a chance to talk to this person about it/make them aware this was violating privacy regulations and gym rules. I was told they "didn't have time" to deal with that. Uhmmm....whaaaa? The locker room is like, 10 steps from your desk, this event is occurring in the present time and you choose to do nothing....for an hour? I mean, I GUESS that makes sense :-/ A few days later I headed back to try my luck at the sauna again after a run. This time there's not one but THREE people in the sauna with their phones. That was the final straw for me. I canceled my membership that day and plan on reinstating it never. Between this issue and the lack of parking and machines, it just doesn't seem worth the monthly fee. Not once over the years of me coming to the Y have I actually seen a staff member go through the locker rooms just to check on things. Maybe they do? But if they do, it's obviously not having an impact and the rounds should be occurring more often. It seems like a very easy way to uphold this important protocol, and yet, nothing. Not only that, but I was made to feel like I was bothering the staff by asking twice in one hours worth of time if they had taken the 2 minutes to set the record straight with this person about protocol/rules. It is a completely controllable variable on the staff's part and the inaction to rectify the situation speaks for itself. read more

This place restored my faith in Gyms. Employees are very friendly and helpful. Locker rooms are clean. Plenty of machines available when I go during the day. I also really like the variety of classes available. I love BODYFLOW class!! There are so many choices of things to do from basketball courts, to swimming pool, to racquetball courts...its nice to change it up. I also really enjoy the steam room and sauna. read more

Convenient location in downtown Cedar Rapids with a very friendly staff... but the exercise equipment (except for the treadmills) is a bit dated and the men's locker room and showers are kind of nasty. I also don't like that there isn't going to be towel service anymore. If you are looking for a convenient no-frills place to workout, the YMCA could be for you. read more

This YMCA is the best of Several YMCA branches in Cedar Rapids. I often frequent this particular branch for many reasons: one it is roughly five blocks from the Ground Transportation Centre, second it is the only YMCA branch in the Cedar Rapids area to have both a steam room and dry sauna, third unlike the Marion and Stoney Point branches, this particular branch has individual shower cubicles. Marion and Stoney Point do not, lastly the pool at this particular branch has wider lap lanes and doesn't feel terribly dated. read more

Activities are plentiful, but the front desk staff act like they hate their job. Rude and short with guests.

This isn't a gym. It's a daycare. Stay away. Spend the extra dollars a month and join an actual gym. Kids everywhere. I couldn't shoot hoops because there were people on their phones in jean and boots carrying on conversations. At one point I was dribbling and out of nowhere a kid came from behind took the ball and started playing. I kid you not, as if I was invisible. I went to use the restroom to see 10 kids hanging out sitting on the sinks talking; then looked at me weird as I tried to use the restroom with no privacy. Just utter chaos. It's sad when an actual paying member who wants to use the facility pulls their accounts because of no structure. And to top it all off I go to the front desk to talk with someone and they agree with everything I say. If I could give no stars I would read more
