Started at bar with a couple of extra dirty martinis... perfect. After we got to our table we added a bottle of Cantena Malbec with the escargot and shrimp/crab appetizers, which was great. Cornbread/bread served was fresh and flavorful. Entrees were a Red Fish (jambalaya like) and Halibut. Both were absolutely FANTASTIC! I never take home anything but I asked for a box for leftovers. This place was PHENOMENAL! I live in downtown CHS and this was top tier. Cocktails- fantastic. The honeydew cocktail special was refreshing and delicious. We had the mozzarella and heirloom tomato appetizer, scallops. Both amazing I could have licked the plate! For entree we shared the halibut and the short rib. The short rib was amazing and just fell apart as I cut it. I have worked at a steak restaurant and this was incomparable. The halibut- I don't like fish but this was so good! Probably the only place I will get fish!!!!! For dessert- the banana brûlée and it was so good! Can't recommend enough. Service was also unbeatable. We felt so taken care of. Went here recently to celebrate a significant milestone in our family. Service was very good. Drinks were very good. We had a bottle of Chateau Margeaux (how can you go wrong). Food was just north of inedible. Every dish was incredibly salty. Lobster was swimming in Beurre Blanc that actually hurt your tongue from the salt level. Had a steak and trimmed off the outer layer to get away from the salt. Frites had to be shaken (to remove the excess salt) before eating. This place has potential...but they need to address the showering of the dishes in salt. Truly cannot imagine who would enjoy that much salt.... Wished the meal was better as it put a damper on our special night. read more

For appetizer we had the grav lox and the scallop paella and for appetizer I had the red pizou seafood linguini and the halibut with white wine buerre blanc. We came to Hege's hoping for a special dinner, but unfortunately, the food was a major letdown. Nearly everything we ordered was badly overcooked. The escargot was under the broiler so long the butter actually burned. The lobster ravioli wasn't any better--the lobster and shrimp were rubbery and totally devoid of flavor from being cooked into oblivion. Somehow, they managed to swing in the opposite direction for dessert, serving a crème brûlée with completely unset custard. It was basically vanilla soup with a sugar crust. It felt like the food was designed to come out of the kitchen fast and impress people who don't actually know what a good meal should taste like. The staff is just going through the motions and spent more time complaining about the guests at the station near our table than helping people. For a bill of over $500 for a party of five, it was a complete joke. We won't be back and you should skip it too. read more

An evening to remember is an understatement. Our group of 19 spent over 3 hours eating superb delicacies and sipping on tasty wines. Everything at our Valentines dinner party was perfection. As we slowly venture out in the post pandemic world, we were thrilled to have dinner at Hege's this holiday weekend. We were greeted by an inviting host who led us to an inner dining area with comfortable couches on one side. Very cozy and elegant at the same time. Our waitress was outstanding sharing local favorites and helped guide us in our menu choices. Everything we ate was delicious starting with the cornbread which vanished immediately. One standout was the savory cheesecake appetizer - unique layers of flavor with a sour dough crumble crust. Easily could have just eaten this for the whole meal. Definitely start off with this! I was surprised at how filling the vegetable entree platter was and the fish of the day was perfectly cooked. Everyone was happily full with their meals and the overall dining experience. Hope to return next time we are in town. *I noted the extra steps the staff took to ensure people felt safe in the dining setting. A party of 4 was seated near us and they politely asked to be moved further away. They were promptly relocated and the staff proceeded to break down the setting completely and redress the table prior to sitting anyone else down. read more

No need to go there, unless you stick to very specific items on the menu. The shrimp and grits was just awful. It was not made according to the specifics in the menu, there was lots of stringy onion (not scallions), and green pepper, I have never had that in my life, there was no andouille sausage. And there was only 4 shrimp, all for $36. It was a complete rip off. Also had a bowl of the French onion soup, it was incredibly bland. It was a not poor, but it was bland. The Caesar salad was delicious, homemade dressing. My one friend had the 6 ounce fillet and it was delicious, had a bite. His wife had the chicken Marsala, and she said it was very tasty. Worst customer service we have ever experienced at a restaurant. We made reservations for dinner. One of the members of our family became very ill with covid the morning of our reservation. We called Hege's as soon as we knew that we would not be able to attend dinner that evening. Restaurant did not answer the call. We called a second time and they finally answered. Hege's staff agreed to waive the cancellation charge given the circumstances. We checked our bank statement and the charge was not waived. They charged us $25 per guest ($225 in total including a charge for a child under the age of 2). We stopped by the restaurant the following day to ask for the charge to be reversed as we had extenuating circumstances. No smile no graciousness: we were confronted with the most abhorrent behavior. The staff we spoke with were completely unsympathetic to our circumstances and treated us very rudely. They lied and said we never called to try and cancel our reservation. I offered to show proof of the call but the staff would not even consider their fault. Our family frequents restaurants almost daily. To this day, we have never experienced customer service as poor as this. We were looking forward to rescheduling our reservation when our entire party was healthy but we would never consider giving this restaurant our business after the way they treated their customers. read more

We were seated promptly and the service was outstanding. My steak was excellent but the asparagus was too salty to eat. I should have asked for a new side. Went to three of the resort restaurants for dinner during my time on Kiawah and this was my favorite meal (believe the whole group shared this view). Started with the French onion soup and it was good (not great) but of course that has to be a staple at this French restaurant. Got the old-fashioned on their menu which was also tasty, albeit a bit sweet. 5/7 of our table got the steak frites, which was a 5 oz filet + skinny french fries. Everyone loved it and it was the beast meat we had all week. They've got an interesting ambiance at this place: each room is a different color and the paintings / artwork on the wall match that hue. read more

It started off well. The seasonal salad and French onion soup were great. Then the entrees came out staggered and incomplete. My husband's entree was cold. My daughter's steak frites was missing the frites. My mussels were not open. Unopened mussels should NEVER be served. This was a birthday and work promotion for me. The waitress came by and told us that the internet was down so we should pay in cash. I don't usually have several hundred dollars in cash on me. After everyone else was finished with their meal the waitress offered to bring out my replacement mussels "in a few minutes" I declined. The floor manager did apologize and they did comp our meal. What they did well they did very well. The overall vibe was that the regulars got prime tables and service while the visitors were second rate. read more

Spoke with the manager, Scott Hudson, who continually interrupted me, so I hung up and walked in to ask him to stop doing so while I asked why. Was still continually interrupted, so I asked for owners contact. I was given the owners card and was told it was his number. Called and immediately went back to host stand. First time here, meeting up with two other couples who suggested this restaurant in the Freshfields area near Kiawah. They have eaten dinner every time they stay at Kiawah, down from Knoxville, Tennessee. A photo posted by me of the two pages of the menu so that you can see that this place is definitely not cheap, but is high-end on the prices. An interesting place where there are rooms here and there to break up the space and thus the noise is controlled, except for the laughter from our table. I had the shrimp, crawfish, and lobster etouffee for $42 which I would get again. The lobster was not cut up but laid on the top within the shell of the tail. The crawfish and shrimp were abundant in the creole-style sauce. In a word, delicious! read more

Franco American dishes. Owners are almost always there. Solid service and usually busy. From oysters Rockefeller to Betty salad to French onion soup to ny strip to rack of lamb to short rib to crab cakes in our group - everything was excellent. Bread pudding desert was delicious as well. read more

If you are not one of the "regulars" they will treat you horribly! We were sat by the toilets, which smelled awful. We asked to be moved to two open stools at the bar but were told that they were reserved for regular customers. (Reserving bar stool, how classy) Upon observing another two stools opening up at the bar, we asked again to be moved. Request #2 denied. We left after being served Appetizers. In all, we were there for about 45 minutes. At no time did anyone sit at the reserved bar stools. Just a completely disappointing experience. Service was abhorrent! Food was average. So, I was a bit concerned dining at a French restaurant as my husband is a bit of a "steak and potato" guy and I'm the adventurous one but Hege's delivered one of the best meals I've ever had while pleasing my husband's palette with steak and potato. Service was top notch, food is outstanding and atmosphere is perfect for fine dining. I had the lobster fettuccine, which was beautifully put together with shrimp, scallop and half lobster in a cream sauce with fresh cherry tomatoes and a chili sauce. They let my husband sub his original sides for whipped potatoes and he said they were some of the best he has eaten. The desert was peanut butter cheesecake and AMAZING is all I need to say. read more
