If you are not one of the "regulars" they will treat you horribly! We were sat by the toilets, which smelled awful. We asked to be moved to two open stools at the bar but were told that they were reserved for regular customers. (Reserving bar stool, how classy) Upon observing another two stools opening up at the bar, we asked again to be moved. Request #2 denied. We left after being served Appetizers. In all, we were there for about 45 minutes. At no time did anyone sit at the reserved bar stools. Just a completely disappointing experience. Service was abhorrent! Food was average. Attitude from the staff was 100% full on rude. Especially the manager, Scott. Much better restaurant options at the different clubhouses on Kiawah. Pass on Hege's. read more

Decent service, good food. Pricey, but overall a good experience. My only real complaint was that they charged me 7 bucks for an expresso. Seemed too much like a tacky cash grab than a nice way to finish a meal. Would return, but will enjoy a coffee and dessert elsewhere. read more

The food is great! Everything came piping hot and very fresh. The service is awesome too, I forgot our waitress's name, but she was very polite and knowledgeable of what was in the dishes. The ambiance is nice, we had a large party (13 people) and sat in the back of the restaurant, which was a little bit of a tight fit but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless. I will include that we had reservations, so you probably will need them too. This is very a highly bourgeois restaurant after all. Dress up, or at least classy casual. read more

just visited Kiawah Island and ate at Hege's twice during our visit. I had the shrimp and crab fettuccini carbonara the first night and she crap soup with a caesar salad the second. McKayla was our server and she was amazing! I would highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We were visiting the Seabrook Island, SC area and were lucky enough to get a reservation for Hege's. I'm not sure I can even describe how wonderful it was. Our waiter Will was charming , knowledgeable and funny. His knowledge of the menu was amazing and he did not steer us wrong. I had the Chilean Sea Bass (I ate it before I thought about taking a picture) it was delicious! My husband had one of the specials of the day Etouffee , his was also eaten before we thought about pictures. According to him it was delicious. We were seated outside and enjoyed it. Warm air, light breeze and a bit of people watching. If you're ever anywhere near this area and looking for a really good meal do yourself a favor and visit Hege's. The restaurant is casual dress, maybe not Jean casual and I would say definitely on the more expensive side. But the food was worth it and when we retire down here I'm sure it will be a favorite dining spot. read more

As a local on the island I am eager to support local business but in this case I will have to opt out at Hege's in the future. I have given Hege's several chances for breakfast but always leave with a negative response. I agree with Yelp Reviewer ~ AJ (5/26/18) ~ and I am well within the same time frame as this reviewer is. Upon entering this restaurant to exiting this restaurant I feel I am an "imposition" on them ~ food and service wise. The portions & quality are marginal. They "dole" (ration) everything out. Had to return an egg plate as the entire plate was cold. Not to mention the wait time. If it wasn't for the lone "server" making rounds with coffee I would have gotten up and left. From frequent past dining experiences at Hege's for breakfast I happen to know that they "comp" you with a small bakery basket and on this last occasion they did not bring one during the meal. I got up and walked towards the kitchen and noticed trays of pastries just sitting there! I had to ask the server for one! I also noted that other tables DID NOT receive a pastry basket ~ what are they saving them for???? I had communicated during recent visit to an "owner?" (hard to tell, a couple of fellas walk around but are NOT attentive, rude and seem totally disinterested in patrons), but on one prior occasion I felt I wanted to share (maybe bond with someone here!!!) with him that someone I had run into recently "loves your restaurant"; he was congenial and lit up with the compliment but on a followup visit this "owner?" continued his old habits and never acknowledged....... Terrible customer service....For repeat customers, this is a NO NO! especially in the food and hospitality business! They may do well for dinner but breakfast time is OUT and I will not return ~ I think Hege's may be taking too much on with weekend breakfasts.... it seems the kitchen and "owners" are too tuckered out to cook/serve and maintain a pleasant atmosphere for breakfast service on the weekends in a community that will once and a while report some disappointing negative news and reviews.....! read more

Went back to Hege's last night and they were busy because of the jazz festival. I don't think they were well prepared for it because it wasn't as good as the last time I went. I got the prixe fix menu. I tried the ceaser salad this time and it was good but there was no anchovy on the salad which was disappointing. The dressing tasted like it was homemade from a good recipe. The crabcakes were delicious, perfect actually. Not too much breading and the flavor was good. However the white rice that came with it was over cooked. The sauce was good, and the shrimp were cooked nicely. My mom got the lobster and ravioli. It was ridiculously over priced in my opinion. 3 mushroom ravioli and one half of a lobster tail for $32 seemed a bit steep. The sauce was ok but the sauce that came on mine was much better. Maybe they could have gone with 4 or 5 ravioli and it wouldn't have seemed like a joke. But 3 ravioli is a joke with an overpriced price tag. Was really looking forward to this French inspired restaurant after looking at the menu online and they did not disappoint! My party of 5 people all ordered drinks, and shared the shoestring fries and conch fritters for the table. Everyone also ordered salads which were delicious and I ordered the she crab soup! LOVED IT! Worth the extra calories if you love crab soup! For main courses, three of the five of us ordered the ramen bowl. This is a good option for vegetarians. They are. Enjoyed their meal. Our fourth friend had the fish special and I had the shrimp and lobster linguini. Everything was delicious and the service was great. Our waitress was Lisa and she was honest about her favorites and when we asked about the crab cakes (we have Maryland roots), she said you won't like them if you like lump Maryland cakes! We really appreciated the honesty! We all shared a chocolate tarte for dessert and enjoyed the evening! Make sure you make a reservation during busy season or you will never get in! read more

Heges was fair but not great, and in my opinion was over priced given some of the other local restaurants who hail in comparison. Our experience started in a loud room, followed by drinks that were not quite what we ordered. Our appetizer was a summer special with fried shrimp and a peach slaw, and they were delicious. They came out very quickly, along with the bread, but we waited nearly 75 minutes for our entree and no one even apologized for the time spent. The ravioli dish, which was recommended by our server, was fair and grossly under salted. However, the chicken dish was so salty that it was difficult to eat. All in all, not bad but not worth the price tag. read more

Be careful dealing with them. I recently made a reservation for Hege's using Resy, earlier that day, had to cancel it. Provided 3 hour notice prior to seating. They even thanked me for notifying them. Later that evening, my CC was charged $125 by Hege's. Contacted Richard Hege and he indicated it's their policy, I was aware of it thru RESY, so too bad. Cancellations within 24 hours are NOT permitted. So long Hege's, there many other fine dining options on the Island. Total inflexibility in regard to their reservation policy. read more

Was looking on line for something a little different than Lowcountry cuisine. The menu for Hege's isn't posted online,but the pictures don't lie. And the specials are pretty amazing. I had the Grouper special with a fennel tomatillo sauce, it was delicious. As was the BLT Cheesecake. We shared an order of calamari that was okay. But the show stopper of the night was the Veal Tomatillo Tomahawk Chop. It was so delicious. We'll be back. read more

This is probably the biggest joke of a restaurant in the entire Kiawah Island resort. This was our second trip in two years there, the first year our waitress was so angry at the world we chalked up our bad experience to her. This last trip, this past May we went there and spent $324 for two adults and two 8-year-olds. The food and execution was so subpar I would've gotten a better meal at a local chain. I had the special. It was seared grouper on top of an eggplant mash with watermelon. If you are passing on that, I need you to open your mind to the possibility of flavors that await you. You have a crispy seasoned grouper on top of a garlic eggplant mash, with almost a gazpacho surrounding it with the sweetness of watermelon to accompany the flavors. It was an explosion of flavors wildly unlike the monotony of downtown Charleston food. I'm only unhapppy this restaurant is 40 miles from my house and I can't come here more often. read more

If you're going to be reservation-only, then you should say that clearly...somewhere...anywhere. We tried to get a table after having an unexpected opportunity to go out without the kids. We arrived early at 5pm with plenty of empty tables in full view, but were quickly told upon entering that they were reservation only. If you are reservation only, that's your business, but make it clear--don't let someone get ready to go out, drive down there and then get rejected at the door. Only positive thing I can say is that the gentleman who informed us at the door was exceptionally polite, apologetic and seemed to be embarrassed. read more

This place came highly recommended and for good reason! The pricing really isn't that bad. I felt like the hostess was a little impersonal but we sat in the back room and the ambience was perfect. The first room was bar atmosphere, the second room was loud and crowded then the 3rd room was more private and quiet. The service was amazing, very helpful, always right there. I ordered the pork and did mashed potatoes. The sauce with the pork was delicious and everything was cooked perfectly. My significant other ordered veal parmesan and it was bursting with flavor. The cornbread was so good we had a second order. For desert we did the angel food cake with blueberries and other berries. (I forget the name) but it was the perfect end. read more

Just wow. Hands down best French toast breakfast I've had. Fresh berries with maple marscpone spread. No one was disappointed with their breakfast on the last day of the bachelorette party weekend. Pimento cheese grits were 'a whole new level of grits'. It's a little more expensive than McDonald's, but worth every penny. Once again it is a little small, so be prepared for a 10-15 minute wait during peak on Sunday. Would love to come back here again. read more

Unfortunately, a very disappointing visit tonight. We had an 8-top with an 8:15pm reservation. A bit slow service from the beginning, but after we waited about 50 minutes from when we were served our appetizers, I asked to speak with the manager to inquire about the long wait. Unfortunately, the manager on duty basically gave me a "so what" reply. He said they were backed up in the kitchen and that was about it. No empathy or understanding or apology about the long delay in our food service. Frankly, I was taken aback at his response and apparent lack of understanding about what is an acceptable amount of time to serve a meal. No customer service focus whatsoever. The food is really good, but this poor service experience and especially the manager's reply will keep me from returning! read more

I started off with a Kettle One Martini and it was well crafted. We ordered the Escargot as our appetizer and it was very tasty. Recommend dipping the table bread into the buttery garlic sauce! Yum! Now onto the main courses. My wife ordered the Fish of the Day which was Halibut on top of Orzo and really enjoyed it. I ordered the Calves Liver and Onions and it was exceptional! The best entree I've had so far on the island and comes highly recommended. The Mashed Potatoes that accompanied it were creamy and buttery which went well with the rich liver. For dessert we selected the Chocolate Lava Cake and it was wonderful! Perfect pairing of rich, warm chocolate and creamy, chilled ice cream. So if you are on Kiawah Island and want a wonderful dinner, this is your place! Bon appetit! read more

The one star is for our server. She was a true professional. How this place has almost a 5 star rating is beyond me. 4 courses and the best thing on the plate were the cherry tomatoes. Appetizer: calamari - rubber bands and frozen, should have called it day right then and there. Soup: She-crab - I'm almost certain the soup had been frozen and reheated. Mealy crabmeat and veg. Bland bland bland. Asked for some sherry which along with salt and pepper gave it SOME flavor. Salad: wedge - not much you can screw up with a wedge, so this was the tastiest part of my meal. Odd presentation with 2 crisscrossed pieces of thick bacon across the top of the wedge. Main: Crab cakes with asparagus and shrimp (as in 1) with a buerre blanc - at $42 one would expect jumbo lump and not pitiful small shreds of backfin. Over cooked to dark brown, so they were totally dried out except the middle. The lone shrimp gave its life a second time. Easily overcooked by a minute and a half. Worst $264 I've ever spent for a meal!! Just plain pitiful. read more

Superbly prepared food and top notch service The fish of the day was Snapper grilled to perfection with a cauliflower risotto and it was delicious. Crispy crust and moist inside. I could have eaten a boatload of this fish but had to save room for dessert. Key Lime pie with a berry side made a fabulous finale. Hands down this restaurant was our best meal during our vacation on Kiawah Island. Apparently it has been around for about 7 years and is a real favorite of the locals. That said, this place is definitely more upscale than you might imagine when you first walk in so be prepared for prices that reflect really good food and wine and expert friendly service to boot. We walked in around 6pm right off the golf course and inquired about a reservation closer to 8:15. They were cordial and accommodating and even told us that at that hour, some of the specials like the soft shell crab might be gone. We asked if we could reserve one order for the entree and they willingly obliged and noted it next to our names in the reservation book. Can't beat this type of service! When we arrived at 8:15 we were promptly seated and the dining room was quite full (as was the bar room in front). Our female server was lovely and brought us Pellegrino and drinks right away. She suggested the rose which I thought was fantastic and the Sauvignon Blanc my husband had was really complex...delicious. We skipped right to the entrees and ordered the soft shell crab, the signature Asian style seared tuna in a broth with rice that was perfection. The sides here were also spectacular-the grilled lemon and garlic asparagus were enormous and beautiful. But the brussel sprouts were knock your socks off good-sautéed in a smoky olive oil sourced locally. This gave them the most delicious bacon flavor without the pork! Totally vegan...yum! Note: my husband orders soft shell crabs whenever they're in season and has had only two preparations in his life that he enjoyed. These were fried but the batter was light and let the crustacean really shine! Looking for a Pinot noir that would pair nicely with my tuna, I ordered the Sass 2012 which our waitress recommended and wow was that good. We even bought a bottle at the wine shop in the little fresh fields village on departure! Couldn't ask for more in the way of quality food, great value in terms of the portions which were huge, wonderful wine all served by folks who really care in a warm setting.
