I'm in Abilene every year at this time and treat college students to a meal at Heff's Burger. This time, we had 9 people with a variety of combinations of food and sides. When the young lady brought out food, the burgers and sides were all mixed up....she had the order slip and attempted to organize things several times... And provided an extra side and the last order we needed...but the fries were cold, the onion rings weren't as good as usual, and a couple of us didn't ever get what we ordered. I look forward to a root beer...but all I got was carbonation....no root beer syrup. My burger was greasy. I'm disappointed! Hope it was just a bad night. I've always been satisfied in the past... Wow! It's been six years since I reviewed this place. Well, it's still 4 stars! All the Heff's in town are everywhere except where I live. I have to drive across town to eat at one. And I do. They have always had a great selection of burgers, and my favorite is the Bucket Burger. But I go to Heff's for the steak fingers. Steak fingers and gravy, fries and gravy, and toast and gravy! Definitely my favorite meal at Heff's. I really like the way the dining room is decorated. I hear people gripe about Heff's on Antilley Rd, but this location has never done me wrong. Had the Bucket Burger with chili cheese tots. Great food, super fresh bun, excellent service. So why not FIVE stars? I've driven by the place several times recently and it honestly looks closed. Never more than a car or two in the parking lot. Super dark parking lot. Blinds drawn on most windows, and very poor lighting inside. Inside, half the chairs are up in tables, half the lights are off or burnt out, and those that are on are all different shades of yellow and bluish white. I went in yesterday to order food..the chef was cussing on the phone bragging about how much they made that day red flag 1..the lady working the front counter didn't see us and we were standing there for a while waiting red flag 2..I start to order and she starts telling me the long list of things they don't have and the fry machine is broken and that's strike 3 and I'm out. Not good. Traveling through Abilene and figure - college town, local burger joint, good Yelp reviews - what could go wrong? It is really hard to get down to 2 stars with me. I ordered the "Texas Twister Fries". The picture on the big menu on the wall resembles a basket of fries from spiral sliced potato. Or so I thought. It is potato chips. Cold crisp potato chips. And not particularly good ones. How do you call that fries? I know they call fries chips in England but this definitely ain't England. I was livid. They also have 'House Recipe' ketchup from Sysco; letting me know they don't care about me enough to spring for the extra fifty cents for Heinz. The burgers were burnt, the bacon was under cooked, the fries were soggy, and my son's corn dog was so over cooked that it was black. The soda machine was out of syrup. Heff's was highly recommended by my colleagues, so we decided to grab lunch. We were not disappointed. Burgers : I ordered the Bucket burger. The jalapeno bun makes that big difference! The burger was great and prepared to perfection. My friend ordered the Double Meat burger and enjoyed it as well. Sides : I tried the Twister fries and the tater tots. Personally liked the tots better. Heff's sauce : Forget about ketchup.... just go for the Heff's sauce. The sauce made all the difference to the meal. They also sell the sauce for $6 a bottle. Loved it! Shakes : Was not very impressed with the shakes. Only reason for the 4 star. Service : Friendly and courteous. Ambience : A nice lil place with ample parking. They have outdoor seating which was perfect for the weather. Definitely recommend Heff's if you are in the Abilene area. read more

A bit underwhelmed. On line order could "not be seen" although payment went through so I had to re-place order at register. Fine, technology fails us sometimes. Sent out the door without the drink and no cutlery for salad. Is it my fault for not catching the drink? Probably but after 10+ hour drive, too tired to care. Also fries a bit underdone. Momma Heff is a very sweet lady, met her a few times at the mall location and she played for us a beautiful song on the piano. I know....I said piano! The idea of having an ice cream bar and for ice cream socials with friends at the mall is a very good idea. Made with Blue Bell of course. The salad bar is new and very nice choices to accommodate anyones taste buds. Also on Monday night they have Jindo bingo froM your phone and can win a $20 gift card at the end of the night or free ice cream. So, here's the bad....service. Expect long delays when you order, the staff is all over the place because I think the inexperience and maybe the customers keep asking for one off things which makes the staff run around and forget other customers??? Either way, I've heard others in town day the same and will not go back because of the staff shortage and the attitudes. Stinks....we need more people like them but I think this is not going to change. The live music nights is a hit, but some improvements are needed and it won't happen overnight. read more

We stopped here on Labor Day, and it was so so. The burgers were good. The fries are fresh but not at all crispy and stuck together. My kids didn't care for them much. The kid's burger was on a full sized bun, so we needed to tear off about an inch around the patty to make it visible. My husband ordered the El Heffe burger which came missing avocado. He requested it for the side to put on himself, and there were several brown spots which could have easily been cut before serving to a guest. There were several tables that had not been wiped down in the dining room, and the restroom was out of paper towels. I might give it another shot if we were in Abilene, but I'd probably try somewhere else first. read more

I'd been to the Heff's in Sweetwater before, so I had high expectations with this Abilene location. Initially, I though the menu was more creative--most of the burgers here were basic, common styles. Nonetheless, I happily ordered the sourdough burger and was not disappointed by the choice! The bun was absolutely delicious, and the meat was well seasoned and juicy--very flavorful. The sweet potato fries were cooked perfectly and were quite yummy as well. Service was fairly quick, but it was also 2pm. My husband liked his burger was said the regular fries were seasoned very well. Overall, the experience was very good. We stopped for dinner on our way through Abilene. It was really good!! We loved the decor and the staff was very friendly. The burgers had a wonderful flavor and not greasy at all. The onion rings were hand battered and tasted amazing. The salad was fresh with homemade ranch dressing. Their special sauce was a little spicy for my taste, but my son And husband loved it. I was going to give this place 1 star, but my wife made her point that 1) nothing catastrophic happened and 2) the food was edible (not good, but edible). First, it took 30 minutes to get our order of 2 burgers and 2 sides. Both orders were wrong in some way - wrong bread or no jalapeños on the jalapeño cheddar burger. The meat was extremely lacking in flavor and way too done. There was no juice whatsoever. It was also $25 for our meal, when I could have gotten the same thing at Whataburger for half the price and less than half the time. And better tasting for sure. I'd also like to note the dead flies in the light fixture above our table are pretty gross and the fans are really, really due for a dusting. Bottom line: not worth it. read more
