With more than 420 stores in Texas and Mexico, the H-E-B grocery company is the fifth largest (by revenue) privately owned company in the U.S. It was founded in 1905 in Kerryville, Texas and became H-E-B when a successful 2nd store was launched in Del Rio, Texas, using the initials of the owner, Howard Edward Butt. I've experienced their take home Texas barbeque a couple of times, and was excited when my brother let me know that his local H-E-B had a Bayou Boil House (not all do), serving up Louisiana Crawfish boils during the weekend. The stand is located at the front entrance of the store where the carts are located (similarly where a hot dog stand would be if in a Midwestern store). It is manned by two H-E-B employees, with coolers stocked with the already cooked seafood and vegetables. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived an hour before closing (closing at 6pm), they were out of crawfish (would have been $6.97 per pound). Instead we got shrimp (headless and deveined, shell-on for $12.97 per pound), with corn and potatoes ($2.97 per pound), sausage ($7.97 per pound). Snow Crab would have been $16.97, though I never think it is worth it. It is all mixed together in a large durable plastic bag. We brought it back home, and I ended up eating it for dinner and the following breakfast. Everything was really good: nothing was overcooked (i.e. mealy or mushy), the sausage was a good andouille, and the old bay type seasoning was just right. They could definitely elevate it up a couple of notches if replicating a Viet-Cajun sauce, that is very popular in the Houston area. But as it is, definitely a winner...along with their Texas brisket, makes me wish an H-E-B was visitable from where we live. read more

HEB - Grocery Near Me - Kingwood, Texas

HEB has been our "go to" store for a long time. Unfortunately, that has changed. In the past, HEB offered national brands along with their brand. It has gotten to be more and more that they are squeezing out other brands and. It even offering them anymore. I went in today to get deli, chips, bread etc for the weekend because our kids and grandkids are spending the weekend. Went to the chip aisle and the only baked chip they offered was a baked Cheetos. No baked lays, no baked scoops and not even an HEB brand of baked chips. So now I know I already need to go to another store. Next stop, I need some fat free half and half. Surprise, none available, not even the HEB brand. I gave up after that and just went to Kroger. It's a little farther from my house, but they had a variety of baked chips, the fat free creamer I needed, a much bigger selection of brand name cereal and they also offer Boars head Deli. So a wasted stop at HEB and I was able to get $ 173.28 of everything I needed at Kroger. I guess I have a new store. read more

Keep an eye on the cashiers and baggers. They are almost always teenagers who don't pay attention to what they're doing. Today $50 worth of steak magically disappeared from my bag. Apparently this happens so often that they have a log book for this. If you aren't careful H‑E‑B will write down the food they steal from you and resell it. I love everything about this store and location, except the meat department. The online ordering is great, but not the case with meats. 3 times now they've delivered meat that is already expired, even though it's dated like 2-3 days out. Chicken, beef, seafood, etc. Pick out your own meat, sure, but even then I've had similar results. I once had picked up crab here (my own fault on that decision) that ended up being already decomposed. Steamed it up, bit into it and instantly regretted it. Pure ammonia. Never again. Everything else about the store is great, though. Staff are always helpful, so I'll just not buy my meat here again. Super disappointing. I've had some great steaks and other cuts of meat here, don't get me wrong, but after 6 times buying spoiled meat, I have lost faith in their meat department. read more

We love having an HEB SO CLOSE to home. The only complaint we have is that we wish the soup bar would have menudo on Sat and Sunday mornings. its very good and popular especially on weekends. IT would be great for HEB customers to be able to count on menudo being available every weekend. It would definitely sell and especially if customers could count on it being available. When I ask about this, employees just told me they have no set schedule. I understand if it's not available, but that has not been the issue. Vegetable quality is just consistently poor. Fresh green beans that are wrinkled and starting to compost. Wormy Brussel Sprouts. Bagged salads with good dates that have apparently been mishandled and turning brown on ends. I've talked to the Management and they simply don't care. read more

Still having issues with deli counter not able to slice the prosciutto right. It's still too thick, this turning out really chewy. But it's also "only" Boars Head or H‑E‑B brands. Which is ok for regular use but I wish the deli staff (who seems to be young and new staff recently) doesn't really know how to cut things despite me giving instructions. But that's a learning curve and I get that. By BIGGEST issue is the baggers. Why oh why do you train your baggers to put bottles (milk or any kind) flat in the bottom of a bag? Noooooo! I would think to put them upright to avoid possible spillage. In addition, why do they bag food items with cleaning supplies? And then you buy delicate heirloom tomatoes and they're put in the bottom of a bag topped with heavier stuff and when I get home I can ditch the by then squashed tomatoes. Wasted money. I'm tired of complaining about this location! I ordered sandwich trays for pick up last week. I needed them for a funeral in Louisiana. I got an email my order was ready, when I got there I waited 25mins. I eventually called the store and they informed me my order was not ready! When I got to my destination in LA, one of trays had six pieces of nothing but bread! I would like to say that I will never shop there again, but I really like that store. It's better to have the HEB than the Hep-C, but either one can be iffy. This HEB is located way off the highway in the heart of the very bourgeoisie Kingwood area, and is a very fancy HEB Store that caters to a fairly well-to-do crowd. It has all the stuff you would expect it to, and some things are overpriced whereas other things are good deals. Overall I think it's one of the best grocery stores in the country, generally speaking, and I enjoy it, and this location would be great if it was just a little easier to get to. read more

Moved back to Texas. Loved H‑E‑B before and love it today. I always brag on the southern hospitality. The great quality of the generic brand is phenomenal. My hubby is a huge cold brew fan but he's hooked on H‑E‑B cold brew and it saves money. I like then express check out it's easy to use. They have amazing produce, cooking connection and meat Dept. Young guy Kam is always cheerful and helpful. This is my go to store when I visit my mom. This store did the catering of deli trays for our wedding almost two years ago and we still talk about how great it was. Thank you Kingwood H‑E‑B!!! Second recent curbside pick up today - 2'd time we are positive personal shoppers are instructed to move the worst looking produce to curbside. Our watermelon is already grainy and breaking down. I got the wrong cantaloupe- why give us a choice if you aren't going to pick the correct on up - all my items are marked no subs. All of the bulk items were weighed heavier than ordered and one of the items is literally "dust" not an edible whole pecan in the bag. I know this post is "bougee" and there are way more things to complain over- however the real complaint is - if you are going to offer this sort of service- them make Sure those you employ are doing it right. Don't empty the pecan dust you have in stock and sell it to me at 13.00 per lb Lesson learned: standard staple Items curbside ok - special items- go in the store- Will plan accordingly next time. read more

Is it just me or do the employees seem nicer than when they were located across the street? Maybe it's the new, roomier, updated store. Or maybe it's just new employees altogether. I don't know. But they seem a lot more friendlier now that they've moved to this location from across the street. And that was my primary beef with them before. Javaman coffee and bbq on site. Nice. Fresh donuts with chocolate filling (my favorite) and long john Bavarian cream filled for same price as regular donuts. Nice. Vietnamese spring rolls need some work though. Tasted horrible. Blah. We moved to San Francisco 4 years ago and we love it! The weather, scenery, atmosphere....everything is wonderful. When I go grocery shopping I'm so let down. HEB spoiled me!! We can't find anything close here. You would think the seafood would be better, but our local options don't hold a candle to what we had back home. Every time I go back and get to an HEB I miss home. I even pack a cooler to bring back Chappell Hill Sausage. The seafood is great here, don't get me wrong. The displays and freshness of HEB... I took for granted until I don't have it anymore. I've always shopped this location on Friday evenings, as I find it to be the least busiest during that time. I will forever praise this location after my experience yesterday. I was one of the ones trapped in the store during a flash flood and brief power outage. Winds were whipping outside, knocking items off the shelves every time the doors opened. Some shoppers were panicky, while others, like me, just wanted to be alone on an aisle, away from the chaos. Once the bad cell went through, I perused the produce section again and noticed people were standing by the door. One of the employees told me the parking lot had flooded, and everyone was stranded. I was fortunate to park my little car toward the front, but there was a river that had formed behind it. Once I managed to get to my car, keeping high on the curb and tossing groceries in the back seat, I noticed employees wading in the water, helping shoppers safely get to their cars. Some were loading the vehicles or standing to see how deep the water was getting. A news helicopter buzzed over us, and the sound of chainsaws started whirling, bringing back Harvey memories. Although it took an hour for me to get home (usually a 15-minute drive), I'll continue to shop and support this location. This store has always had top-notch produce, great prices, and wonderful employees. read more

I don't think I've reviewed a grocery store before, but as #momlife takes over, I find myself spending more and more time here, and less and less time frequenting the bars and lounges I reviewed in my younger days. I've moved around quite a bit, but my experience with H-E-B (and the kingwood location in particular) is the first consistently wonderful grocery store experience I've had (Stew Leonard's is also amazing, but for different reasons). They've always got the freshest produce in the area, reminiscent of the quality I found in the brooklyn fruit stands. I'll drive an extra ten minutes out of the way just to buy produce here instead of the nearby Kroger, ALDI, Walmart, or Randall's. Their app is amazing. It lets you know what they carry, how much it costs, and what aisle it's in. You can also search separately to see if a coupon is available. They've got a surprisingly vast array of items available. I cook a lot of recipes from seriouseats.com, which can ask for some obscure ingredients. I've been able to find *most* of the things I need (with some obvious exceptions which usually require a drive out to H-Mart or Bellaire to get). I'm still continuously impressed by what I've been able to find here. Their store's brand of products is also consistently great. It's really the only place (maybe Trader Joe's?) where I've been completely comfortable swapping out a name brand of something for the store brand of something without feeling like I'm losing quality. Their brand of brisket sausage is now my go-to above any other, and is kept constantly in our fridge and freezer. And the icing on the cake is the amazing service. I know I can call to ask if a product is carried/in stock and get an answer without an attitude. Employees go out of their way to be sincerely friendly and helpful whenever I'm in the store. I haven't felt any of the apathy that often comes when you ask an employee a question (particularly one that takes them out of their way). My absolutely favorite part though, is that in spite of alllll of the above, their prices are incredibly reasonable. I've found many things cheaper than even Walmart's prices. This place is so great, I literally rave to my New Yorker friends about it. I will miss it more than the galleria or anywhere else in Texas if we ever move away. read more

Called for crawfish today, was advised they no longer split sacks for customer convenience. I wish they would look out for the local customers who do not need to buy 35 pounds at a time. Now I have to drive to another store to get a ten pound portion. Way to go HEB in Kingwood!!! Update: Called around and Found another HEB who were much nicer on the phone. Said it would be no problem to sell me loose crawfish. Makes me wonder if selling loose crawfish at the Kingwood location (which is very common) a management decision or someone not concerned about customers because it may take a little more work. This is a very large,modern H-E-B. The selections are enormous the isles are very wide and the people are friendly. If you like H-E-B elsewhere then this is an H-E-B on steroids. I can't say it has any unique products are things that you can't get elsewhere but certainly the selection is impressive. I recently saw a full-fledged barbecue restaurant preparing to open within the store. Perhaps that would give another reason for coming to this store and not another. read more

I don't understand how the deli prepares all the salads fresh but somehow manage to allow bugs to get into the bottom of the salad bowl? If you guys do not care about people's health and well being when selling food then maybe you guys should hire other people who would see things that do not meet the standards and throw it away. I have not had a bad shopping day here yet! Most of the staff has been welcoming and super helpful during my trips. We have used this store frequently during the pandemic and sanitation processes were enforced. There's no wonder everything is better here; HEB sets the bar! Remember when grocery stores were dreadful and cumbersome? You wait forever in those tedious lines only to be reminded that you forgot what you came in for and you need it for the pecan pie you were gonna make for thanksgiving; pecans. This store makes it feel like an event. Going inside is like going into a brand new mall back when malls were fun and brand new. This is that only with something better: food samples. The flour tortillas are some of the most amazing tortillas I have ever experienced. Yes, it's a taste experience with how amazing they are. It wouldn't be a complete grocery store EXPERIENCE without wine on tap!!!! HEB spoils us with this neat feature as well as kombucha on tap! Don't like people? Get anxiety? No worries. Let the incredible staff take care of you with curbside! Ask for the lady in red named Nancy! She's always the friendliest, most knowledgeable, and helpful to a point of disbelief. I like to say the young man that I just spoke to at curbside has to be the rudest person I've spoken to since I've moved to Houston. I called to say they had delivered bags to our house and we had not ordered. This happens a lot. One time it was enough to fill the back of a pick up truck. This house has two 95 year olds in it so food that extreme is a waste. The people listening to him while he was on speaker heard how rude he was. H.E.B. is a fairly good sized grocery. Plenty of parking. Store brands are typically really good, and cheaper, I have had some, like their salsas, that are better than name brand. Produce is typically exceptional, and a good variety. Fruit is typically pretty good with an excellent variety. The deli has a wide selection of meats and cheeses typically carrying Boars Head and their own store brand. Meats are OK, average I would say. Seafood is good, about like most groceries. Occasionally have things you don't normally find that readily like clams and such. Product selection is generally good. Typically if I can't find something, it is not a food item, and it is usually a specific thing, usually deemed to be fetched by the female side of the household, and usually something to do with hair or skin. You know what I mean, "I want the brand X shampoo for frizzy, non-colored, long, medium diameter, extra body, straightening hair one, in the blue bottle (make sure it is a blue bottle) with the Martian Lily of the Crater fragrance." Check out is usually pretty good, and fast to medium depending on crowd at the time. The employees are typically friendly and say hello when you pass them, or excuse me if they are in the way restocking, that kind of thing. Cost wise, I find I spend about 20-30 dollars less than Randals on a typical grocery week, and 15-25 dollars less than Kroger. There is also a Central Market prepared foods counter and prepackaged items which is not bad for a Microwave quick meal. Navigation around the store is typically easy, no big surprises like sections with opposing aisles, that kind of thing. Fancy cheese section, olive bar, pharmacy and florist sections. Of the four different groceries in my immediate area, this one is the one I go to the most. read more

Here is why I feel that way: 1) The produce section is small and the selection is smaller than other area HEBs. 2) Selection seems a schizophrenic mix of Central Market and regular HEB 3) Overall selection not as diverse as other HEBs in the area. 4) Fish section often smells like "fish". This does not inspire me to believe their product is fresh or that their sanitary processes are well followed. Now, for the good stuff about this location: 1) Pretty darned good cheese selection, especially for a smaller store 2) Smaller store means it's not a hike to do your shopping 3) Located near the Park n Ride, so grabbing something on the way home is easy 4) Staff is always friendly. read more

HEB is a Texas staple. Don't know how I'll ever live without a neighborhood HEB. When it comes to grocery stores, HEB is the crowning achievement. Now, this location in Kingwood is my first stop for grocery needs. Kingwood, for being a smaller enclave, has a lot of grocery store options; Kroger, Randall's, Walmart. All of these pale in comparison to HEB which has an amazing selection of organic, seasonal, and local food. Their HEB brand is just as good as name brand, and their prepared foods are restaurant quality. I've purchased their crawfish from their seasonal crawfish boil, their BBQ from their seasonal cook-outs, and frequently stop by to grab a quick prepared dinner from their hot foods bar. Their staff is friendly and makes you feel welcomed. For my birthday, the bakery forgot to make my cake so they gave me an already made cake for free. Everyone is always helpful when you are asking for specific items. I LOVE the Combo Locos that they offer weekly - best way to load up on a week's worth of food for less than $50. They even have someone with samples of the Combo Loco food, so you can taste it before buying. If I could write an ode to HEB I would. This location in Kingwood is just a prime example of a wonderful grocery store. read more

My lord, I love HEB. Great prices, great produce, great service -- a trifecta of perfectness. I lived in Austin for several years and was already familiar with the chain. So when we moved to Houston, and subsequently Kingwood, my first question was, "Is there an HEB close by??" Fortunately for me, yes. This one is an HEB/Central Market minihybrid. It has the Cafe on the Run, which includes ready-made meals. It also has prepared sides. I personally, am a huge fan of the mashed potatoes. DELISH. This HEB also includes fresh-made tortillas and the layout of the store is intuitive enough that you won't get lost in the floral shop on your way to dairy. Also, very decent beer selection. I usually go on Sundays before noon and even though this sounds like madness, the crowds aren't too bad. Past noon, however, and it's every man for himself. read more

I live on the opposite end of Kingwood, but I still make the journey through rush hour to go specifically to this store because I love it so much. True, it's not as big as other locations, but that can also be seen as a good thing. It's never overwhelmingly crowded with people and the shelves always have a good range of products to choose from without being too easy to get lost in. There has only been one instance in the years that I've been going there where I found an expired product still on the shelves (vitamins). Of course, I didn't realize it was expired until I had already purchased it and left, but when I went back a couple days later to tell them, they were very helpful and made the return easy. I also like their selection and price range of wines, which makes finding enough for a different variety 6-pack (you know, to get the discount) each visit real fun. And do you know what goes really well with wine? Cheese! It makes me really happy that they always have cheese samples out, and fun fact, if you ever want to try a cheese that isn't being sampled, just ask them and they will always open and sample it just for you. Bit of advice, however: if you see an employee there named Lou, be ready to hang around chatting for potentially quite a while. Sweetest man on earth and full of interesting stories, but he's quite the talker and doesn't seem to notice when you start subtly backing away because you just know that ice cream in your basket has probably turned into a milkshake by now. read more

I was at HEB today and I had a basket with a probably about $50 to $60 worth of food. I went to pay at the self-checkout when the cashier put her hands in front of me and said no you can't pay here. Why would you ever tell a customer no you can't pay here. I think it's time to retrain your Associates when they're telling your customers they don't want your money. read more
