With more than 420 stores in Texas and Mexico, the H-E-B grocery company is the fifth largest (by…read morerevenue) privately owned company in the U.S. It was founded in 1905 in Kerryville, Texas and became H-E-B when a successful 2nd store was launched in Del Rio, Texas, using the initials of the owner, Howard Edward Butt. I've experienced their take home Texas barbeque a couple of times, and was excited when my brother let me know that his local H-E-B had a Bayou Boil House (not all do), serving up Louisiana Crawfish boils during the weekend. The stand is located at the front entrance of the store where the carts are located (similarly where a hot dog stand would be if in a Midwestern store). It is manned by two H-E-B employees, with coolers stocked with the already cooked seafood and vegetables. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived an hour before closing (closing at 6pm), they were out of crawfish (would have been $6.97 per pound). Instead we got shrimp (headless and deveined, shell-on for $12.97 per pound), with corn and potatoes ($2.97 per pound), sausage ($7.97 per pound). Snow Crab would have been $16.97, though I never think it is worth it. It is all mixed together in a large durable plastic bag. We brought it back home, and I ended up eating it for dinner and the following breakfast. Everything was really good: nothing was overcooked (i.e. mealy or mushy), the sausage was a good andouille, and the old bay type seasoning was just right. They could definitely elevate it up a couple of notches if replicating a Viet-Cajun sauce, that is very popular in the Houston area. But as it is, definitely a winner...along with their Texas brisket, makes me wish an H-E-B was visitable from where we live.

Discovered this place after watching an episode of Rick Bayless's Mexico, One Plate at a Time. We…read morewanted Chorizo. We found it! And we found a whole lot more. This is actually more than a meat market. They have groceries and a lunch/breakfast counter too. We generally go by once a month and load up on things like plantains, baby bananas, bulk beans, garlic, chorizo, tortillas...the basics for latin cooking. The produce department is small, but they have a good selection. I do have to look at things kind of hard sometimes as I don't think they have great turn-around on some items and they can look a little dried out when they shouldn't. But, vigilance pays off and I can always get what I came for. The general dry goods area is oddly arranged (to me) but I can generally find what I want without having to ask. The meat market is the thing we love most. Their meats look great and taste better. We always get bulk chorizo. It is so good with eggs and potatoes and crumbled on top of mac and cheese. I digress. Their seasoned meats have also proven to be tasty. Another nice thing about this market is they sell rendered pork fat by the quart. This is essential in making carnitas and other dishes. The fat is always fresh and never rancid. The guys behind the counter are always nice and helpful, even though our Spanish is mutilated at best. The little breakfast/lunch counter is fun. We have gone there and gotten breakfast and lunch tacos. Their food is definitely authentic and tasty. I will not claim to have tried everything, but so far I have to vouch for tacos (pork) and the basic eggs and chorizo breakfast. We tried menudo, but the texture of the actual tripe threw both myself and my hub off. The broth however was really nice. Give this little place a try the next time you need some groceries with latin flair.

We bout a rack of beef short ribs, noticed all the fat on the slab asked the "butcher" for a better slab and his response was they are all the same. We then asked him to trim the fat and he said they cannot do that for us. All in all I may give them one more chance before I try some place new.

We visited this location late in the afternoon around 7:30pm upon our entry we were greeted with a less than enjoyable welcome from behind the counter, Ms. Christina didn't seem enthused with our presents, She asked us what would we be having tonight in an annoyed manner. While we were ordering at the register she was leaning on the wall just staring at us waiting for our order with no type of help or information on the menu. Me being on a vegan diet cannot do dairy so as I was asking what my options were she could hardly tell me anything at all. Then when we did place our order she printed our ticket and walked over to her co-worker where the proceeded to point and snicker at our ticket like it was some type of under the table joke. Ms. Christina was very slow at making what we ordered and seemed thrilled to have to actually do something. There was no thank you come again as we were leaving or anything of that nature. I've visited this location several times and have never had any problems out of other employees except her. Which Is sad because we really like this location. I feel if the employee don't want to work or do her job then she needs to quit or be let go. Me and my wife both noticed the snickering at our order and we're both taken back and surprised by this employee's rude demeanor. We will be returning, We just hope we don't have to order with Ms. Christina again.

I think they do a good job keeping carts available, getting you through the checkout line and assisting if you have any questions. I like the Texas themed merchandise they have throughout the seasons. It's a great one stop shop. I always pick up my beer and groceries, fresh breads, love the butter there and all the HEB branded canned goods and soup stocks. The prices are competitive, often beating other big box stores. Quality is always there with everything I've purchased. As with any store, I've had some stuff ring up for more expensive than the shelf (old sale tags that weren't removed) but I've always been met with associates who take care of it. Truly my favorite grocery store.

One Star is Too Much!!! Garden Area - On this morning…read more09/24/2025 at 9:30 am, my husband and I, went to H-E-B off Northpark at Interstate 59 and received very poor assistance by a male (description: brown skin, not African American - approx. 5'7 blk/hair,brn eyes) working the area. First of all, I noticed him in the caged area so I said excuse me I'm trying to purchase some of the small succulent plants and the display shows $2 but I purchased some the same ones on Monday at $1 each. He responds, let me scan them and says, well the price is $2.97. Then he, changes the display price from the $2 to 2.97 while my husband and I stand there. And as he proceeded to walk off from us as though we're of unimportance he said with his back to us, I don't make the price so my husband responded back and said, oh you just change them. We proceeded to the inside of the store to attempt to make contact with a manager or individual with a more accommodating and pleasant disposition. But that didn't work either we encountered a female kid by the name of My and after explaining our concerns of what had taken place thus far, she stated, "I don't work in that department so if he said the price was $2.97 then it's $2.97, I can't change it cause I'm not over that department." She further asked for the male name and we didn't remember it but described him and she said, oh I think I know who you're talking about so I'll talk to him. I tried to explain that I'm not asking for you to change the price nor talk to him for the unprofessional disrespect of the individual working outside but that I would like to know if HEB feels that they should honor the prices they display. Manager My said, I can't change the price if it is $2.97. At this point, my attempt for resolution or assistance was to no avail so I told her that was okay but I would be submitting a review for the mistreatment we've encountered today because it's not right and I began to walk away very quickly and hurt. When we had almost reached the exit door, manager or Lead - My, came behind us saying, "ma'am I can give you a discount then", and I responded, "that's okay because if there's not a mature store manager here than I'll just do my review because you all aren't treating people right and we continue walking out of the store and left. This is our neighborhood location but unfortunately if this is the new treatment that HEB will be displaying toward their customers then we'll just have to patronize KROGERS and elsewhere for all of our future groceries/gardening purchases.
