If you're a woman visiting alone, don't be surprised if you're treated like the day's entertainment by some of the older men who spend their mornings here. Within minutes, I was repeatedly invited to sit in a stranger's booth, warned not to stay in town too long or I'd "get pregnant and have to stay..." and asked about my political views before they knew my name. Basic manners are optional, but political screening is not. They made fun of gay people and told a joke about a preacher and a "colored person." If you're not a part of the political party that does that, they'll say that you aren't welcome. I was polite, as I was alone, but I did say, "I will be sitting over here the whole time," the 5th time I was asked to sit in the city council member's booth. One of the woman said, "he's not a pervert, he just plays the part." I did like her but If my husband had gone instead of me the comments would have been different. They might think they were friendly or charming but actually most people would find these comments intrusive and uncomfortable. The bakery isn't responsible for every customer who walks through the door, but if this behavior is common, then it becomes part of the customer experience. I was antsy to get my food and leave... Just a mom grabbing breakfast for my family at 6:45am. They have good food and reasonable prices. The server there was wonderful and so was the man pouring coffee. I ordered the fish and opted for the onion rings . Delicious !! What a fabulous entree. Both the fish and onion rings were deep fried in home made batter, lightly salted and crispy. Four large pieces of fish mixed with large pieces of onion rings. Plentiful and more than enough for take home. Delia was our server and we couldn't be more lucky and grateful for her excellent customer service . This place has the most amazing food and service. We came in on Mother's Day and were immediately taken care of. Due to being new to the area, we were told the story of the restaurant and shown around. They loved my blue heeler service dog and had zero issue with her being there. Had the best Mocha coffee over ice and OMG the best sausage links and crispy bacon we've ever had. Can't wait to get moved up here to enjoy this FANTASTIC restaurant more often. The Hearthstone Lodge has a bakery and cafe in town serving a complimentary breakfast with a fixed menu. However, if you want to eat off their regular menu they give you a discount. Beware, though: it IS a bakery and they had a great selection of breads and pastries. I had the veggie scramble and hubby had the pastrami breakfast. He enjoyed his breakfast and I thought the scramble was delicious. More than I could eat so it was a good portion. We left with a loaf of bread (rosemary garlic) and made sandwiches for lunch. WONDERFUL bread! Haven't eaten the pastries yet but if they are anything like the bread we'll be in heaven! Highly recommend! It did take a few minutes to get our food but the staff had just seated a large party and was also crowded with tables of 2 to 5 people. They kept the coffee coming so we were fine with that. After a week of camping, we were looking for warm comfort food, so what could be better than a bakery? Unfortunately there wasn't a hearth, and the biscuits were stones. There was quite a bit of confusion among the waitstaff about the "&"symbol versus "or" on the specials board. Let's just say we would have made different choices if it had been clear. My husband and I had brunch here today. While my lunch, pastrami on sourdough and soup was delicious my husband's pancake was burnt on one side and it took 45, FOURTY FIVE minutes to get our food. I rarely write a bad review because I use Yelp to drive my restaurant choices. We were not let down today. There were 5 of us and not one complaint. I had the French toast breakfast (perfectly delicious), the little mister had the chicken fried steak breakfast (savory, crunchy, and tender with delicious gravy), my son had the fiesta scramble (most perfect and absolutely to die for), and our two little girls had their usual kids's meal (chicken strips and French fries). Friendly staff and a homey interior made this our favorite stop (so far) on our trip. Hungry? Go here!! Also, if you get a choice to order the jalapeño cheddar toast, do it! So good!! read more

Oh my gosh! Stay at the Hearthstone Lodge and your free breakfast is here! Our server, Chantel, was so kind and informative of what was offered on the menu. The offerings for free breakfast is limited to 4 different choices. If you decide to not have one of those items, you receive a money credit on the meal you choose. I chose to have a bacon/cheese breakfast sandwich on sourdough bread. I expected just a slice cut in half but got a full sandwich with hash browns! Amazing! Thick bacon and fresh cheese on freshly baked bread. Hubs had biscuits and gravy. Large biscuits and big pieces of sausage in the gravy. So hungry we failed to take photos of how big the servings were. Of course we had to buy some pastries and a fresh loaf of bread with us for the road. When we take road trips, we try to support locally owned businesses and stay away from chains! Who would guess you could find this gem in small town Kamiah, Idaho! This review is based on two consecutive visits. We came in for pastries and coffee and the next day for lunch. The first day pastries were good as usual, and the coffee hot. My wife ordered a white mocha after asking for a tea. The girl working there said they didn't serve tea. Anyway, the white mocha was nothing more than cocoa powder milk and coffee. Def not a white mocha. We chalked that up to maybe a new employee. The next day we came in for lunch. We stood at the door and waited for a few moments and were told to just grab a seat anywhere. We sat down over by the kitchen doors. As we sat down we noticed two other tables with people at them, so we would be the third. Not slammed by any means. We than sat for almost 20 minutes waiting for menus and our drink orders. Finally the older waitress who has been there a while came over and asked if we had been helped. We said no, and she ran off to get menus and our drinks. We sat for another 15 minutes and we finally were able to order our meals. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich and my wife ordered fish and chips. As we waited one other customer came in and the other two tables left. So I would say they were anything but busy at this point. We waited almost 25 minutes for our meals and when they came the other lady working, rushed them to our table like the kitchen was on fire and ran off. My wife's fish and chips looked good but they didn't come with any malt vinegar, tarter sauce or a lemon wedge. My meatloaf sandwich looked good, but I wanted ketchup with my fries and there was none on the table. I waited for almost another 10 minutes til someone came back from the kitchen and I was able to flag her down. Getting annoyed by this time. The fish and chips were good, but having to wait so long for condiments was a bummer as your food got cold. My meatloaf sandwich which was advertised as a signature meal was hot. But the meatloaf was very dry and very bland. The sweet potato waffle fries were very good and crisp the way I like them. Overall I was very disappointed. I've been coming to Kamiah to eat here for about 11 years now and the food and service here used to be great. The service has really gone down hill and the food is nothing to write home about anymore. I will come back for pastries but not for a meal. I miss it when they served dinner and they had a special chef from the south who did a fabulous job. Its hard in this area to get excited about food because so many people are fine with mediocre. Some training on greeting customers and waitresing would go a long way. Oh well, back to the hot dog stand in Orofino. It is still the best food in the area, and even that isn't as good as it was when the original owner had it. read more

This place is a gem in Kamiah! Such friendly service, (Jennifer)? I had a scone which was moist and chock full of blueberries. I also had a cup of tea (a pot), which was so charming and relaxing. I got a ham and cheese which was their special. LOOK. A ham and cheese on tomato basil bread. I think. I don't remember, because it was toasted perfectly and had a perfect amount of butter. Coffee drinks are now hit-or-miss depending on who makes them, portions can vary depending on who is cooking, etc. 2013 update: the best place in town for a "healthy" (aka not-fried) lunch or dinner with some vegetarian options. The service has been better of late with GREAT coffee drinks! Beautiful interior, great location. We stopped here on the way to Bozeman, Montana, and got sandwiches to take with us. I loved the decor! The tin ceiling was wonderful, and I loved looking around. The rest room was spotless, a big plus in my book. They had homemade bread for sale and we bought a loaf, and while we waited for our sandwiches to be made I looked around the building. I was not at all put off by the Christian books in the bookcases. The sandwiches looked really appetizing on the menu, but we were disappointed in how dry the bread was. That's the only reason for the 4 stars; service was a bit slow, but it looked like people were getting ready for some kind of event in another part of the building. I wanted to get a huckleberry pie to take along but felt that $20, even for huckleberry, was kind of steep, so we didn't get one. But all the pies there looked wonderful. I can't believe I have not done a Yelp review on Hearthstone before. It is our favorite breakfast stop when we are in Kamiah. It is housed in a renovated old pharmacy with its ornate wood soda bar (sorry just the woodwork), old wood floor and tin ceiling. They have their own on site bakery which always tempts us with a take home loaf of one of their specialty breads. You better pay attention when they ask what type of toast you like as it is a bunch. The menu is not large, but they change it up and the offerings are generous and well made. We generally eat breakfast but have also had lunch and have never been disappointed. I wish they offered dinner but understand why a family owned place would have to have some time off. For a long time this was the home of my favorite maple bar. Since I cant get them where I live I miss them...but alas they dont have them anymore. For those that like cinnamon rolls they got your number though. read more

If I could give NO stars for a review, I would do that. I've been to this restaurant before and NEVER have I had such bad service. Two waitresses in the building; the dark haired woman was hustling and taking care of several tables. Our waitress, the gray haired lady - and I have gray hair, so it's not an age thing, just a description, took 20 minutes before she even took our order. Others who had come in after us had their orders taken and their food before we did. Our waitress finally came over and told us our order would be ready soon. We said it's been nearly an hour since we arrived, and she repeated how it just got so busy. We reminded her it was nearly 20 minutes after we arrived that she took our order and she said AGAIN that they just got really busy. We ordered BLT's and the bacon wasn't even warm, so I was wondering how long the food sat up on the shelf before she brought it to our table. I have a say, this is the first time I've never left a tip for a waitress. She really needs to start taking responsibility for her own lack of service to her customers. read more

What a find in Kamiah (Kam-ee-eye) as we rode the circuitous US 12 from Missoula to Lewiston! Homemade bread for our sandwiches, delicious soup and a cookie made for a wonderful lunch to keep us going. The restaurant is a restored turn of the century building in the center of town with a Victorian ambience. Our server was very friendly and more than happy to share with us the history of the area and correct pronunciation of the nearby town names!
