Awesome dining experience 9/21/23 with our party of 5 (4 adults and 1 toddler). We found this place located at the property we were staying at (smugglers notch resort) after our son and daughter in-law and our youngest granddaughter joined us for vacation. We left to go dine around 6:15pm at another establishment, but they were slammed. Went to another and it was more of a bar and they were also slammed. People eat early around here! My daughter in-law called ahead after we left the bar type restaurant and they had us a nice table waiting for us! Excellent atmosphere and the service was very friendly and welcoming. I think Billy was the name of our waiter but several of the other wait staff worked together to help him. Our dinners were all excellent and everyone enjoyed them. I had the pork chop and it was prepared perfectly and flavored well. Wife had the scallops with butternut squash and she raved about it. Can't remember what ther other three had. Excellent wine, Ken Write Cellars Pino Noir. So good we got another bottle to go. read more

This is our go-to restaurant for special occasions. The food is incredible - so delicious no matter what you order. We enjoyed the Sirloin steak, Butternut squash soup, the Winter squash caprese salad (my new favorite dish) and the special: scallops wrapped in bacon - so tasty! We appreciated the excellent service from Kelly - friendly, professional and helpful. And we enjoyed a nice cozy table in the corner. We had a lovely group dinner at the Hearth & Candle . It's a very lovely Vermont Inn feel . The menu was limited but the salmon was good, coq au vin delicious. Both pastas were good. The salad had a nice balsamic dressing. Topped off with a delicious apple crisp. You do need reservations. Friendly service. read more

We are staying at Smugglers Notch Wyndham and this restaurant is on the property. The first time we ate here this week, it was out of desperation. We knew it was going to be expensive and reservations were needed. We walked in at 740pm and there was a single open table! I was super happy. Tim not so much. Tuesday: We had the bread appetizer with the maple butter; the bread was fluffy and the butter not too sweet. Tim ordered the creamy tomato soup of the day. It was fresh tomatoes with herbs; very clean tasting, not like a bisque. Then we shared the charcuterie cheese and salami. Our choices were delicious and they were not skimpy servings. There was plenty of salami left so Tim put it on the mixed green salad he ordfor dinner. I had the scallop dinner. The flavors were an explosion in the mouth. The bacon was minced and sweet yet salty and the perfect amount was laid on the "corn sauce". The creamy corn sauce was to die for; sweet and creamy, almost smooth. The scallops were perfectly cooked and so delicious. I am not a fan of the red pepper drizzle but it went well with the rest of the flavors. The potatoes were crispy and petite and tender. It was just so good. I dreamed about the scallops so we ate there again last night! Thursday: Last night Timhad the special which was Lobster Fettuccine Alfredo. The noodles were homemade. OMG! Deliciousness. The sauce was mildly garlicky, the lobster plentiful, and the noodles tender. I had the scallops again! They were just as good the second time around. I would have them everyday if that was an option but it is pricey to eat here. They have several dining rooms and a bar area. It is beautiful and leans towards an upscale, rustic, romantic interior. The Dr ess code - if they had one- would be semi casual. There is one waiter per floor that we could see so it is not a place to go if you are at all in a hurry. The menu is set and limited, except for the rotating specials every night. I don't know if or when they change the main menu options. I would say there is something for everyone but that simply isn't true. Tim is a meat and french fries man and he had salad; a regular old salad. If you have picky eaters, I would not recommend. If you like to try different flavors and are adventurous- even a little bit- this is the place for you!! read more

We came here after trying and failing to go to a local brew pub for dinner (they were packed and understaffed). The staff were so welcoming and accommodating. I have been going here for years but this was the first time I sat in the basement. It has an old hunting lodge vibe that I loved! The food was also amazing, the baguette with maple butter was so good we ordered another one for the table. The place that saves Smugglers Notch dinners. 6 years ago I ate here every night, this time looks about the same. Great food and amazing staff. We started with a cheese platter, charcuterie plate and a braised leek appetizer that had a beef cheeks with a super chimichurri, not to forget the roasted garlic with the other 2 appetizers. We follow up with the 5 oz New York for my kid he loved it, cooked perfectly and well seasoned, the salmon and my wife got the pork chops which had lentils, kale and bacon lardons. Out of the 3 desserts, I love the S'mores brownie not to take any credit front the Hearth Affogato, and Panna Cotta both were delicious as well! read more

Hearth and Candle was a hit and miss on our recent visit. Five stars for atmosphere and service, 2-5 stars for food and drinks, 1 star for value. The atmosphere is dark and cozy with 4 or 5 separate dining rooms. Our waitperson was very friendly, attentive and offered recommendations (also honest with her likes and dislikes). For drinks we had wine, martinis, coffee drinks and a hot-toddy. We started with the pork belly as an appetizer, it was lean with a crispy rim. Side salads came with Maple Vinaigrette. Dinner included braised short ribs with purple mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The ribs were tasty, sprouts were crispy but only 4 were served. Order of Venison bolognese was good. Unfortunately the seafood paella was bland, the rice was dry and the shrimp tasted like they came from a frozen bag and not worth the $38 cost. Overall it was pleasant experience but portion size was a bit small and over priced. After a full day of skiing, we wanted to refuel for the next day but didn't get that from Hearth and Candle. read more

Hearth and Candle is a cozy restaurant situated at the bottom of Smuggler's Notch Resort. The restaurant gets busy especially during peak season, so make sure to call ahead and make a reservation (especially for large parties). The food here is excellent with a wide variety of dishes, roasting specials, and an eclectic cocktail menu ranging from zero proof, low proof, and martini options. I had the Nectar of the Gods to start out with which is aptly named - it's a tart martini made with tequila. The duck confit and latke appetizer was delicious and incentive, the crispy textures of latke and duck confit were perfectly matched. The bread and butter you'll need to pay for, but it's worth it in my opinion. The butter tastes fresh churned and was so good my mom insisted on taking the leftover home with us. We had a platter of dips that was refreshing. For mains we tried the pork chop, five cheese raviolis, mussel and veal specials. I appreciate the uniqueness of the menu and while most things were excellent there were some misses for me. The veal short rib was extremely fatty, and I don't think veal really works in a short rib format. The lavender in the five cheese ravioli dish felt a bit out of place to me. Overall still some of the best food I've had in the area. Don't skip dessert! The after dinner drinks are worth sampling as well. read more

HEarth and candle came in clutch tonight after an initial plan for dinner failed. Heads up: they're a separate entity from Smuggler's Notch so you cant charge to your room. There were four of us here tonight and one of us got the special Bolognese pasta, and loved it, commenting it was lighter and more tomato-y that expected, almost a Northern Italian take. I had the "Beer Belly" pork belly appetizer and the chowder, which was also had as a main by another member of the group. The chowder needed pepper but was otherwise really good and the pork belly was amazing. The coconut shrimp also got high praise. 5 star atmosphere and service. Perfectly fine for kids 8 and up, but best for a couples or family dinner if there's no kids in your group. read more

Food was lackluster, interior was not upscale for the price, service was decent but not up to the standard of what they are selling restaurant as. My raviolis were good, as well as the soup, but the portion was so small I was not filled. My girlfriend was served one piece of duck with a can of beans. Her sister got soggy fries and frozen chicken fingers. My mom got the toughest chicken ever and my dad got bitter iceberg lettuce in his salad. $230 for that mess. Good things-- service was solid and the food came out quick. They have high chairs, and crayons and coloring sheets for my 15 month old. They also have plastic cups with lids and straws which is awesome. The place is super cute, and the ambiance is very nice. The big down side-- the food was just not that good. Everything was incredibly under seasoned. We ordered the three dips and one was incredibly garlicky, my husband describes the tzatziki as cucumbers covered in watery yogurt with some dill on top. The beet one is edible . The pita was the best part-- the veggies were sort of old looking. The salad we got sounded great from the menu but then was really sort of inedible. The walnuts were raw, the Brussels sprouts were raw, and the dressing was sort of tasteless. The pork chop was overcooked, and had a fig jam which was so thick it felt like it came straight out of the jar. The veggies on the side were fine, but lacked salt and pepper. Came here to enjoy a nice anniversary dinner while we were vacationing around Burlington and Stowe. It wasn't busy so we were seated immediately. Loved the ambiance of the old colonial home. Our server was nice, nothing extraordinary nor was he bad...it was just mediocre. I had the coq au vin blanc while my hubby had the steak and cake. Both were very delicious and cooked to perfection. We had a nice evening here in the adult room with excellent service and a server who knew the wine menu. I started with the $10 beet salad which was delicious if not a bit skimpy for the price. My husband had the halibut special. The fish was great but the risotto cake was akin in texture to a hash brown cake-even he could not finish it. I had the ravioli and like other reviews noted-the pasta was undercooked. I was hungry after a day of skiing and it was the only vegetarian entree so I ate it. I had been hoping for a nice creamy sauce. It had a nice light tomato sauce which seemed fresh. We skipped dessert. My thought is that the menu is creativeg and unless you want to get in your car you are sort of stuck eating here versus a pizza place or cooking for yourself. Still, I would come back. Not sure if the food is microwaved but I did wonder about the second floor kitchen. We came back a year later. The lobster tagliatelle is delicious. A decent amount of lobster made the $36 price tag less daunting. The fish and chips was so-so-would not order again. CoD was flavorless except for the creamy sauce of cucumbers next to it. The gnocchi appeared to be fried which made them bland. It was a bland fish dish. The reisling was great-served icy cold. Service is good. Friendly and not intrusive. read more

We have been coming to Smuggs for 30 years and this was our first time eating here. Cocktails are on point and the wine is just as good . The duck tacos were fantastic. The kids mozzarella sticks were surprisingly good. I had the pork special and it tasted great. The steak is really good too. The desserts were all delicious. This is probably the fanciest restaurant on the Smugg's resort. Just a fair warning - it's a bit pricey, but a nice place regardless for a date night or nice dinner. We took advantage of the Kids Night Out (Tuesdays) at the resort and came here without our daughter. Upon entering, we walked down a short flight of stairs to the lower level where the restaurant is located. It is not big; maybe 10 tables or so - Quite intimidate. There is also a small bar in the far corner of the restaurant with some seating. We were seated next to the fireplace (not real, but still nice ambiance) and were greeted warmly. The menu has a nice selections of small/medium/large plates - small plates ranged are under $20/medium under $30, and large (entree) are under $40. They have a full bar with a few nice microbrewery beers on tap. Since we weren't too hungry, we just had 2 entree dishes - Lobster tagliatelle (handmade pasta w/ spicy vodka sauce w/ lumps of lobster meat) and wild boar gnocchi. Both were very delicious and just the right portion. We also shared the Banana foster dessert - which was so yummy! The service was great - they were attentive, yet respect your space. The food came out at a good pace and we never felt rushed or ignored. We are looking forward to coming here again. read more

I would probably give this place a 4.5! We stayed at Smuggler Notch and my best friend had already dined there twice earlier that week. With a party of 6 including 2 babies, we went there since it was more convenient and a walking distance. The restaurant was quite full on the first floor but there were seatings (and a lot of space) downstairs. My friends ordered the octopus soup, it was very tasty! We had the calabrese salad (which was ok-good, pricey indeed but we were expecting it) and the crab cake (my husband loved it!) The lobster pasta was very generous lobster wise (34 or 36$ US) and delicious !! It was a heavy plate though. My friend had the lamb and also loved his plate. Service was okay. It cost us about 150$ for a party of two, including wine, plus tip. The food was very good, my friend tasted other plates and recommended it highly... and i have paid this to eat at restaurants in the past, but something/wow effect is missing for it to get 5/5... read more

I would actually give this 3.5 stars. We ate here with a large group of 12. Our server was fantastic. We all really enjoyed our meal. Everything from the mussels, cheese board, steaks, lobster fradiavlo, salads etc. it was all very good and good quality. My complaint is the prices for the portion size. The entrees were on average around 35-48 dollars and everyone still felt a little hungry. The kids meals were also over priced. There were two chicken tenders with the fries. You're paying Boston or New York prices. From our experience, it's the only quality food on the mountain but unfortunately we wouldn't go back with a large group because of the prices and portion size. read more

I savored the seafood chowder snd a beet salad, the statler chicken was enjoyed by my daughter and my son in law thoroughly enjoyed the prime rib special. Had a delicious dinner there last night with my husband. Romantic ambiance with candles and fresh flowers on the tables . I had a martini from a choice of many unique cocktails which had oxymel( a locally prepared elixir) ! We both had fresh garden salads and warm bread . I had scallops with a nice risotto which was wonderful. My husband had a steak and cake ; New York strip on a pancake with a glaze and with carrots .He totally loved his dinner . We had coffee and shared a brownie s'mores with brownie, marshmallows and a sauce . I would highly recommend and look forward to going back . So far this week staying in this area in Vermont, Hearth and Candle was the best meal we had from both a service and food perspective. A lot of people have noted it was very pricey. I felt that the quality of the dinner and experience was very reasonable for what we got. We ordered two cocktails, two glasses of wine, an appetizer, a kids meal, the Statler chicken Newberg entree, and filet wrapped in bacon entree. With tip this ran about $160. When we arrived, we had made reservations, and our table was already prepared for us with a highchair. Our server was wonderfully attentive to our needs as well as our toddler's. The atmosphere was friendly, warm, and welcoming. The other diners were friendly and complimented how well behaved our toddler was. The cocktails were well crafted and tasty. I ordered a gin fizz and my husband a Manhattan type drink. Both were on par with what we've had at craft cocktail bars in Boston and NYC. The food was superb. Our appetizer was beets and cherry tomatoes roasted with truffle oil, blue cheese, and topped with dill. The vegetables were all roasted perfectly and evenly. Not a single beet or tomato was charred. Each one was roasted to peak flavor and sweetness. For entrees, my toddler isn't quite a young diner yet but I loved that they had two kids menus. He loved his bean and cheese burrito. He tends to be picky but loved almost every bite. It was baked with a perfectly crisp outer tortilla shell. I ordered the Statler chicken Newberg, served over prosciutto and apples, with mashed potatoes and carrots. The chicken was perfectly cooked, exceptionally moist, and was such a large portion I could only finish half with my big appetite. The only thing that could have made this dish better was roasting the apples a bit. I paired this with a crisp glass of fume blanc from Sonoma Valley. My husband ordered the filet wrapped in bacon, perfectly medium rare with the smokiness from the bacon infusing the steak with flavor. This came with mashed potatoes and green beans. He paired this with a local barnyard red wine, which was tasty with strong hints of vanilla. We might have been tempted with dessert but the choices just didn't seem very exciting. We probably were too stuffed anyway, but this would really be the only room for improvement. Well, the chef needs to find another line of work. The Venison Bolognese was an insult. It was watery, and merely approached having any flavor. Tonight's special Grilled Swordfish was another mistake. It was watery, and if it didn't have watery onions, would have barely qualified as food. The scallops with mint risotto was yet another insult. The five scallops appeared to have been sautéed, but only barely tasted like scallops. The mint risoto was horrid. It was mush, no body, must have been scooped from a mush bin made a week ago. The Coq Au Vin Blanc may have had been made with white wine, impossible hard to tell. Another watery mess. Neither the portions nor flavor justified the $32+ cost of each entree. If it were not for my wife keeping the mood light, I'd have had an even worse experience. Good thing we had cheerios afterwards at home. All this for $230 for 4 people. Yay.... You have to know the truth. read more

Nice caesar and an even better butternut squash risotto and I enjoyed the venison chili appetizer but I felt bad for eating Bambi. Mains were a pretty epic fish and chips and my lady had the filet. Do NOT eat here!! My family and I checked into Smugglers Notch Resort and decided to head to Hearth and Candle for dinner. The kids menu with separate kid appetizers was cute and we enjoyed the Brie with apples and pesto. We asked for their seafood chowder and were told it had sold out but minutes later our waitress returned to say they had a bowl of it left. The chowder was obviously what was leftover in the pot because it had almost no actual seafood in it. My husband ordered the filet, I ordered the salmon and my kids had lobster tagliatelle and a kids menu pizza. The adult drinks were good (quite strong though) and their mocktails were delicious for the kids. The trouble began when the entrees arrived. As soon as I put a fork to the salmon I could see how pink and uncooked it was. I'm well aware that some folks enjoy eating salmon "rare" but I've never been to a restaurant where they just cook it that way without asking. When I alerted the waitress she apologized and took it back to the kitchen. By the time I saw the salmon again my family was completely done eating. The waitress put my food down and announced that they had "put it in a smaller bowl"....I'm still not clear on what that was supposed to do. The biggest problem was that by this point it was horribly overcooked. We asked for a to go box but I couldn't bring myself to even take it with me when we left. The waitress kept apologizing but super weirdly - she kept saying really intensely, "what can I do the make you happy?" and, "I feel like I haven't made you happy." We told her that it wasn't her fault, she hadn't cooked the food. But it felt like we had to take care of her and her feelings on the matter, instead of our poor experience. As a former server myself I don't ever tip poorly and this was no exception. There was a man in glasses who seemed to be a manager yet he walked by our table probably 10 times with not a word. I was with a group of four people as we stayed in the smugglers notch resort. We dined at this restaurant later in the evening about an hour before they closed. The waitress was a little annoyed and stand offish with us for some reason, not quite sure why? We tried to lighten up the situation and she only got more strange. Anyway it was a lovely evening and the food was delicious and fresh. Farm to table fresh! We ordered a cheese plate for an appetizer and it was yummy and the cheese was tasty. Everyone loved their dinners, I had the vegetarian meatballs with ravioli in a light cream sauce, it was very good. Nice portion size. The interior of the restaurant is a little dark but kind of romantic too. It's really hard to judge a restaurant during Covid times because they are A little restricted on what they can and cannot do. Manager/host was very friendly and accommodating! My husband had the Cobb salad which was a meal in itself. My caprese salad was good- 3 different types of tomatoes, cheese some nice pesto laden toast. I would have preferred some meatier tomatoes rather than a red tomato, a green tomato and then some grape tomatoes.My husband had the special which were bacon wrapped scallops. He said they were exquisite and was very impressed that the bacon was well cooked around the scallops. He took the last order of scallops so I ordered the filet. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce was wonderful and tasty. A bit pricy but the food was quite good and it was a nice relaxing atmosphere. read more
