We went to the store yesterday (June 21, 2021) a very nice professional employee was very knowledgeable about the ingredients for healthy food. She helped us pick out dog food that was is similar to the one we have been using for our dogs because we could not find the product that we have been using in this area. We moved from out of state and the very nice young professional employee found us another food that was very similar. And it's local and a family owned business. Which we really like to support. She also informed us that the food that we buy at a local grocery store was recalled and we had no idea that was happening. Healthy Pet is a great place to come for better brands of pet food. I feed my dogs wellness brand treats and food, and the selection at the other stores around here, isn't as good as what Healthy Pet carries. When I first got my pups, Healthy Pet was the only place where I could find natural food options for dogs. So that leads me to believe they are in the know on what's best for your pets, before other stores do. Another reason I like coming here, are the free roaming cats. No, I'm not a crazy cat lady!! It's fun when for me when I come across one, and a couple are very friendly and like to be pet. This is something I like because my daughter is allergic to cats and I can no longer have kitties in my place. Years ago, my father brought me here and we discovered they had cats available for adoption. Of course I fell in love with one and had to have her. The process and what they required for someone to adopt was a bit strict. They will not let you adopt if you plan on letting the cat out. At least back then they wouldn't. We got a lecture on the dangers of letting a cat outdoors and we had to swear we'd keep her inside. I thought this was a bit much. But when the lecture was over and I swore I'd keep her inside, I left with a kitty. They have a program for pet food, where if you buy ten bags, you get one free. I personally think this is a good deal. The pet bed and leash/harness selection isn't great, but they have enough. They have bulk bird food I buy for both my outside bird feeders and my inside parakeet, who has a preference for their bird food. They have a nice fish selection, both salt water and fresh. And they still have a cat adoption clinic, in their store. Every time I go there, there are quite a few available. If you're looking for specialty dog food brands, or the usual brands, and a more personal form of customer service, this is a nice place. I'm giving four stars and not five because of their requirements for cat adoptions, semi limited hours, and lack of non food dog items such as leashes etc. Oh, the cat I adopted, Sophie. She lived to be 13 and was an outdoor cat her whole life. She could often be found under the lilac tree or on the walkway getting a cat tan, often accompanied by the other outdoor cats of the neighborhood. read more

Although the smell isn't always the greatest, this is a super convent spot to pick up all your pet needs. They even have a cute bakery section for special treats for your fur babies! I picked up some cookies for my dogs first birthday and they were reasonably priced and super cute. Very close to my job where I can grab something on my way home. It's better than PetSmart. Pretty much the only option for better brand pet food in Rensselaer County. It's nice that they have fish stuff. If Benson's had a competitor, this would be it. Healthy Pet does have bulk treats, which is good. They carry Lupine. I find everything is really expensive... the brand of food we buy is $5 more a bag than at Benson's. They mark toys and treats up A LOT. The only staff member that's nice is a younger girl with short black hair. Everybody else isn't rude, but they're not nice either. You're better off going to Benson's. read more

This pet store is the cat's meow. Large selection of grain-free, canned cat foods. My cat loves the Pride brand "Ritzy's Rabbit Recipe" in gravy. There's a small, adoption room with some really lovely cats. The staff are exceedingly helpful and courteous. I don't have any other species for pets, so I can't comment on the rest of the store. But judging on the feline section the whole store stocks quality, wholesome brands. Just a limited cat toy section from what I can tell. read more

If I were to describe the store a few months ago, I would have described it as a well kept aquarium supply store with health fish and expert staff. Today I would describe healthy pet as store that charges more than money than larger establishments and cares very little for their customers. There is very little reason anyone to shop here. For more details, please read the detail of my review below. The store changed it's store policy on trading in fish/corals for store credit a bit before November of 2014. They will take your fish for free, but will not give you any credit towards a purchase in their store. As an aquarium owner and big spender in their stores ($3000-$4000 in the past two years), I was a little irritated by this. Local fish stores are more expensive than the competition. I support them by spending more money there because they offer more, and this service is one of the bigger things that differentiate a Local Fish Store between a PetSmart or a Website. The least they can do is throw me a bone when I give them something that will obviously make them a 200-300% profit. So, I decided to make a stand. First I spoke with Matt (Head of the Fish Dept in the Troy store) to discover why they'd changed the policy. I've been told that taking trade-ins was a difficult policy to replicate. Healthy Pet Center would like to open more locations; however finding the expert staff to replicate that process is difficult. People who turn this hobby into a career like Matt and Jess are tough to come by. You need someone like that to evaluate a fish and estimate the resale value. He explained that this came from the man/woman who owned the store. I'm a big spender at Healthy Pet. Hell, I'm probably in the top 5% of customers in the last two years. One thing that is true in most business settings is that roughly 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers. Meaning, customer retention is actually more profitable than customer acquisition. There are a variety of reasons for this, and if you're interested google, "customer retention vs acquisition". My point is, if I'm in the top 5%, then the owner probably wants to know what someone like me thinks. Healthy Pet Center was opening a store in Latham, and they were going to have a grand opening! This would be a perfect opportunity to share my experience as a customer. After all, the point of a grand opening is to celebrate success and interface with your customers. I spoke with some staff to make sure the owner would be there and marked my calendar. Finally the day had come. I spent a good half hour to an hour trying to figure out how to articulate my perspective on the policy, and I ventured into the store. I spoke with the first staff member I saw. He was an older man wearing a pair of khaki shorts and a pair of glasses nested in his hair. I asked him if he knew where the owner was. He asked about the nature of my business. When I told him I wanted to talk about the fish, he told me to speak with one of the aquarium staff and said he didn't know where the owner was. I decided to wait for Jess (The most knowledgeable aquarium staff member in the store). After she was done with a customer, I asked her where the owner was. She pointed him out. It was the man I had spoken with earlier. I felt disrespected. I was upset. I was angry. She could see it. I told her he lied to me. She apologized. My girlfriend asked if I still wanted to talk to him. I was too angry. I couldn't. I'd make an ass of myself. I left the store and decided to write an email to the company explaining what I've explained to you. They've yet to respond. It's been weeks since I've emailed them. I told them that I'd post reviews everywhere if they didn't respond. So here I am. I'm so irritated. I wish I'd just saved 1000's of dollars by purchasing my stuff from an online store. I'm also frustrated because there is this store with great employees, healthy fish and an ass of an owner. Don't make my mistake. Don't waste your money on an establishment that doesn't care about it's customers. read more

They have everything healthy you would ever want for your pet. They're very warm, personable and they know their regulars by name. What really sets them over the top is their love for the pets. They have a small adoption center and they love the animals as if they were their own. I particularly love that they are also a safe haven for people who have just dropped off pets and ran away from them. They kept, loved and nutured a little drop off kitten. I've gone to Healthy Pet for 3 years now and I've finally given up and am driving across Albany to Benson's from now on. The owner hires young kids who do not acknowledge you whether you're coming/leaving the store. One time, several girls were behind the counter while I was trying to check out - all of them with suckers hanging in their mouths. The only time anyone said a word to me (because they were too busy talking to each other) was to push the receipt toward me and say "sign this." The manager or owner is just as bad. There's no customer service. I've had to carry several 40+ pound bags of food by myself out of the store (no cart) while their staff stands around and talks to each other. I'd rather drive farther away and at least have someone say 'thank you for your business" than to be treated like they don't care if I shop there or not. 11/2013 - When I have no other choice, I'll go to Healthy Pet. Not much change in the service; it's marginally better but don't expect anyone to help you open the door if you're carrying anything heavy or awkward. They still deserve a 1 star. read more

This pet store is a local gem. They sell the no-hide bones that my dogs love. All of their products are high quality, and the prices are great! I would recommend this place to anyone with a furry friend. They even told me that if they did not carry the particular dog food that i wanted, they would order it for me with no additional charge, and no obligation to buy. Love this place! read more

I am very satisfied with the Healthy Pet Center! I find that their aquarium supplies and saltwater fish are reasonably priced compared with their competitor. Matt is very knowledgeable and very attentive. Jessica is very helpful and also attentive. To date I have not had any problems with the fish and corals I have purchased. They are thriving! This is great since it is a huge investment. I purchased an 80 gal. Nuvo aquarium and it is absolutely beautiful! The live rock is great! It came with so many surprising sea life that everyday is just an adventure to see what pops up next. The staff behind the counter are also very nice. They greet me every time I come in. Jayne the groomer at healthy pets is the best! My dog loves her so much and can't wait to go that I can't even say her name. He's a very big strong dog , gaint schnauer and some groomers said he was too much. Jayne gave him a chance when he was one, well he's eight now, and still going to Jayne every six weeks. Healthy Pet is our first choice for all of our pet food, treats and toys. We usually go to the store in North Greenbush. Over the years the staff there have always been very kind and helpful when we had questions. We love Jayne the groomer who takes care of all three of our dogs and does a wonderful job. We go to the Delmar store. The staff are wonderful, really knowledgeable on berthing you need for your pets. They also welcome your pup with open arms when we visit. The owners are involved with rescue and we have adopted two pets through rescues they work closely with. read more
