We had a wonderful experience adopting two guinea pigs from this shelter. Very pleased with the outcome and experience.

I picked up my cat that was microchipped with my name listed as a contact. I of course explained I had rehomed her due to medical issues and I was unable to care for her. The manager there the older, tall, Caucasian woman with short brown hair with highlights or whatever. I came in obviously anxious to make sure she was okay. This woman was so incredibly judgmental and rude to me for no reason like I was interrupting something. I just wanted my cat back that was the entire reason I went to pick her up. The women in the other part of the building were sweethearts. I thought that was that I wouldn't have to go back. I checked the stray page again a few days later to ensure none of the other cats I previously rehomed were brought in since I didn't want them to end up like my one girl I picked up a few days earlier since I am in a much better spot now. That being said I saw a cat that looked like a possible match to a different cat I rehomed. I called and asked for information on the cat. They neglected to mention how old the cat was when I was on the phone with the woman. I drove 45 minutes one way since they said I can come in and make sure it wasn't her. I get there and once again the manager was a problem again with her attitude. I was talking with a different person at the front desk, and she cuts her and myself off multiple times. Manager tells me to go wait over in the area with the chairs with an attitude she has had since she seen me walk through the doors. I wait for my turn to see if I can view the cat, I was curious about. I was told on the phone I could then as soon as it's my turn. I explain the situation again for the 3rd time. The person goes and asks the manager if I can go back to check even though they already said I could. I wait another 15-20 minutes. The manager finally comes in and I have to explain the situation AGAIN! She cuts me off while i'm talking and asks if I have proof of ownership. I explained my proof of ownership and how I rehomed her due to my medical issues. She accuses me collecting cats and then goes on to belittle me and talk down to me like i'm stupid. Proceeds to continue talking for 10 minutes saying a lot of cats look alike and it doesn't mean that it's her. I explained that yes, I understand that but, if one of the cats I rehomed was on the streets I would like to take them back and keep them since I'm physically and financially able to again. She continues to cut me off saying it's not my responsibility and a bunch of other condescending comments that really rubbed me the wrong way. After 15-20 minutes of listening to her she asks how old the cat was I told her and she said no it's not your cat that this cat is a year old. At this point I was livid. I drove 45 minutes one way just to be lectured by someone that has ZERO right to be lecturing anyone. I try to leave, and she continues to go on about how it's not my responsibility if one of my cats ended up at MHHS after I rehomed them. I absolutely cannot believe someone would put someone like her in a manger position. I genuinely hope they find a better manager for this establishment because this entire experience left a godawful taste in my mouth. Please do better. This humane society has gone downhill. read more

I've adopted several cats from this shelter. I've also donated to them on several occasions. I cannot speak to their veterinary services, but I can comment on their front desk. Their "process" or whatever it is called to see and adopt an animal needs to be revised. It is overly long, repetitive and involves talking to 2-3 different people and someone to take to see the animal before adopting. In addition, despite having adopted several animals from them, the same exact form needs to be filled out every single time you got there to adopt. If they're capturing my information on their iPad it must be getting stored somewhere, so why must I refill it out every single time I adopt. In addition, why must I speak to one person to fill out the form, another about seeing an animal, a third to see the animal, and a fourth to actually adopt it when all of them except the one showing me the animal all sit right next to each other? Lastly, and this has already been longer than intended, so I will not into any example, but some of the more recent front desk staff have been rather rude and "lazy" for lack of a better word. That said, anyone who has every taken me in to actually see an animal has been wonderful. So, can't give 2.5 so 3 stars. Needs improvement. read more

BEWARE! They give rabbits KETAMINE here!! My 8 month old rescued bunny was brought here this past weekend to be spayed. Without informing me or my friend who brought her there and waited to pick her up, Dr. Christine Cornish gave my bunny KETAMINE because she said that the anesthesia wasn't working. She was so dosed up, she took forever to wake. She died. DR. CORNISH KILLED MY BUNNY. In no way was ketamine necessary and she caused my bunny distress before a painful death. Good, clean friendly place. Veterinarians in scrubs wandering in and out. One came and took a little pooch for an amble in the car lot. This place really needs a serious sign, either by the road, or on the building. I tried to find a person and could not. I own a business in the area and I have been very very generous To various organizations within the Capital District. Today I came in and wanted to look at some of the animals that they had here, the door was locked even though the website says that they were open from 12 to 5. One of the workers came out of a side door and immediately said that "we are closed and we are not open to the public" I immediately responded and said that I was here to make a donation and wanted to view some of the animals, I did not tell her how much the donation was. She immediately said that I would have to come back on Monday and walked away. In the meantime more cars have arrived trying to get in to no avail. Other cars have arrived and are dropping off donations of cat food and dog food with in blue bin outside. Sorry guys.....My company is pretty big in the area and I was about to donate $25,000 to you Because I felt the need to be generous today but unfortunately your workers Made it impossible with their attitudes. read more

I am happy to say that because of our bird experience, my mother and I were involved in an incredible undertaking by MHHS to rescue more than 2 dozen parrots from a hoarding case 2 years ago. The conditions they came from were terrible, with over 100 other animals. Not being one of their regular volunteers, it was an amazing experience to see everyone in the shelter come together in this effort. Donations of food and cages from local company and helpful citizens. While MHHS does not normally deal with birds, many, many of the staff and volunteers who did have bird experience were able to get these birds cleaned up, checked by an avian vet, given sanitary cages and then placed in loving and experienced homes to get the attention they had been previously starved of. I myself fostered 4 and then kept 2 of the birds, and my parents 4 others. During the initial fostering they were very involved in making sure we were seen by an avian vet and provided with all of the medication and care we needed to make sure they were rehabilitated to full health. They checked on us to make sure everyone was doing good. My happy, healthy, spoiled parrots are thankful that MHHS was able to rescue them and give them the long lives they truly deserved! read more

You cannot go and see the cats and give them love (which they all look like the need) unless you are 100% certain of adopting THAT DAY. No one let's you know until you try and go into a room and then you get shouted at saying you can't go in there. Not sure how you know if you want to take a cat home unless you interact with them... all women staff is extremely rude Also facility smelled worse than other humane society I've been in. It is unfortunate because I would like a cat in the next week and now will go elsewhere with better policy and staff. read more

This so-called "humane" society does little to protect animals. Instead of protecting defenseless animals from neglect and abuse they fob off complaints to the State Police who have no knowledge whatsoever of laws that protect animals. They NEVER answer their phones. The head of their enforcement division, Andrew Fiumano never returned our call about a very serious situation because he was too busy taking his own dog to the vet! I urge people NOT to support this group because they are not accessible and never return calls and I wonder if they even properly vett potential adopters. The MHHS Board of Directors should be monitoring this uncaring and incompetent operation. I figured I would wait to post my review until it started to get a little chilly out. Maybe the colder weather will be keeping people inside more and that will mean more time to get a new pet transitioned into your home *hint *hint* Years ago I adopted a kitten from here. Little black kitten.. the feistiest one of the bunch :) Well, it's been about 6yrs, she's still fiesty, a fan of cuddles, and also a very solid member of our family. When we got her she had an upper respiratory issue, just something that happens once in awhile. Figure she was found with her little family outside so she didn't get the best start. The shelter offered to take her back, but even after just a couple days we were in love with her. The staff sent us home with helpful instructions, things to help feed her and medicine.. all free. She got better fairly fast and today is healthy, strong and can pretty much climb walls. Our vets wall still carries her nail marks today from when she tried to reach an impossibly high window! That winter we also got Sophie as a companion for Edie. While the two didn't end up hanging out as much as I'd have liked, they always sleep together and always have each others backs when another cat creeps into our yard. Even tho the local cats just come to bake on the walkway when it's sunny out and aren't looking for any Edie or Sophie trouble. Nice to know the yard has four-legged security! My last visit to the shelter wasn't such a happy one. One of my dogs had passed away and I brought him over to be cremated after my vet told me that was there they sent animals. I chose a private cremation so that I could have the remains back. It was a difficult time for me but the staff was very sensitive and helpful. During that last visit I took a walk through where they keep the cats. Most were keeping it cool and relaxing, some were ready to play catch the finger through the cage. Some wanted to be pet and then pet some more. I then visited where the dogs were. Almost every dog perked up, most coming to the front of their little areas. Excited to see someone, tails wagging, tongues hanging out making that one track mind face that shows thoughts of "pet me, pet me" "let's play" or "ooh ooh a visitor". As I walked out of the room, heads went to the floor, backs turned to the room so they could look out their windows and some just curled up looking a bit spent or perhaps let down. It was genuinely sad. If you have the space, some extra time, and love to give that's pretty much all the animals here are looking for. Well that and maybe a treat or two and some room next to you so that they can be close to someone that loves them :) read more

We actually got our new kitten from a petsmart which had an adoption center which partners with this humane society. We went to this H.S. to get her microchipped. I walked in the door to be greeted by a funky wierd smell and very drabby surroundings. Their pet viewing area was okay but it could be so much better. The staff weren't too organized. I really wondered what was the point of making an appointment when we still had to wait while some staff just sat at the front desk. I'm all for getting pets from the humane society but this facility needs a makeover and the staff need to up their game considerably! read more

This review is a little different from the previous reviews, rather this is about my volunteer experience there. Last Saturday a group of us signed up to do a Habitat for Humanity at a local house in Albany but in the days leading up to it had rained a lot. Since the project was outdoors, it was cancelled when we showed up that morning. So the 9 of us decided to look for another place to volunteer since we had the next 6 hours free. We headed to the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society to ask if they could use our help with anything. We wound up sorting the donated bottles and cans they get for a few hours. It's not glamorous but it's something they would've had to do. The staff was really helpful and friendly as we'll probably go back there. I didn't even know you could donate your refund-eligible recyclables there! Learned something new.. read more

Mohawk Hudson Humane Society is wonderful. They go above and beyond for the animals that come through, and they advocate for each and every one of them to be adopted. We've attended a few of their events, including cat yoga and the MeowLuau. Without them, we never would have met our pitty, Harley. She's the perfect addition to our family. read more

WORST SERVICE EVER!!! I wish I could give negative stars for this crap hole! Absolute worst service ever! The people who work here are the epitome of TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! The website says returns calls within 24 hours. Actually, it's more like 6 weeks! I tried calling for information on surrendering a cat for at least 3 weeks before I got someone to call me back. I was working and missed the call. I tried calling back again for a couple more weeks and nothing. I called one more time. This time I pressed the button for "reporting animal abuse" instead of "surrendering an animal", and what do you know, someone answered. Don't remember her name. I told her my situation. She says "we have no room for any cats anyway." Well why the Heck couldn't someone tell me that!!!??? Or how about ANSWER THE Damn phone!! I asked for a manager and when she got on the phone, again explained the situation. I expressed how I've been calling and calling and get nothing back and how I finally got a voicemail from someone. She cuts me off with " Well you can't really say no ones called you back if you got a voicemail, can you?" This is the manager being a condescending B!!!! I called her a smart ass and she hung up on me. That's it! Forget this place. You suck at life and you suck at work, and the whole facility needs customer service training. Or how about just being a decent human being training. Both are necessary for these Incompetent butt wipes! read more

I went to look at adopting another cat several months ago. when finally this male volunteer came over with two young teenage girls he was training. I told him which cat I wanted to see. we went in the room and he said this cat was Ferrell because he hissed at him and you couldn't pet him. then proceeded to tell me he was from a hoarding situation and abused. It didn't seem the volunteers were trying to work with these cats so they were more trusting of people. i think the cat was probably afraid because of being abused and distrusted people. wouldn't you be? the male volunteer was very arrogant and proceeded to drill me about how many cats i could have. i told him it was not a problem and he refused to show me any more cats. i did not tell him my one cat was not doing very well and i may have to put him down. i think he was just trying to show off in front of these girls. if i ever do decide to adopt another cat i don't know if i would ever go back there. their adoption fees have more that doubled in 5 years. its crazy. there are a lot of good people who would be great pet owners but can't afford the fees read more

Got my lovely Artemis (pibble extraordinaire) here back in March. It can be a little hectic here when there are folks coming to see animals, adopt, new animals are coming in, people are arriving for appointments etc. But the staff are generally friendly, very helpful. The adoption fees for canines generally range from $75 - $250... I've heard people complain about the fees... but you get a speutered, vaccinated, vet checked pet here. The vet care alone they get before you adopt a dog here would cost far more than the adoption fee. I'm so glad they found "Myra" when she was out on the street as a stray. They gave her a chance (something pitbulls often don't get in other areas of the country) and I ended up with a perfect dog. (but of course she's perfect!) read more

My husband and I adopted our Violet in March of 2014. The experience of having her has been wonderful. We love our bull. MHHS is comprised of employees and volunteers who truly care about animals. You can bring dog and cat food to the shelter anytime for a donation. MHHS also accepts your empty bottles as donations too. In the last couple of years I have been frequenting garage sales; buying sheets, blankets and towels to give. Everyone is so nice and thankful when you donate. I'd give it zero stars if I could. TERRIBLE customer service! We waited about 2.5 hours during their "Clear the shelter" event today to see a specific dog, only to be told that the ONLY person who could show the dog had left. If the dog had been adopted by a family in line in front of us, I would have been happy for the dog. However, to wait that long to not even be able to see a dog that is still available is unacceptable! I will NEVER adopt from this shelter. After relating my story to a friend, I was told she heard they send sick animals home with people. I guess it's just as well we didn't start to bond with that dog. read more

Dear Editor, Yesterday, my husband and I had to put our 18 year old beloved cat, Daniel, to sleep. We made the decision when we observed that he was no longer eating or drinking. We called the Hudson Mohawk Humane Society and we were told that "yes" they euthanize and it would cost $75. Bob left work early. We wrapped Daniel in a blanket and drove to Menands. Upon our arrival we were told by the receptionist that we couldn't be with Daniel when they put him down. There gave no reason for not allowing us to be present. All we were told was that it was "policy." When we asked why this was the policy, we were told, simply, "it was policy." It just didn't feel right to give them my living cat and have them bring me back a dead cat. We begged to be allowed to be with Daniel while they administered the drugs. We were told flat out "no" and that we could take the cat to our vet. So, we wrapped Daniel up and drove another 15 miles with him very uncomfortable, to the Latham Emergency Vet Hospital on Route 7 where they were extremely kind, very willing to have us present and we put our loving pet down. It was very peaceful. It made us wonder: how do they kill the animals at Hudson Mohawk Humane Society? What is the objection to having the owners present for the euthanizing? Are they doing something in humane behind those closed doors? I think somebody needs to investigate. I will never go back there ever again. Later that night after we buried Daniel in the back yard, a friend came over for the evening and we told her the story. She said that her cat got out of the house and she couldn't find him. He had a computer chip for identification. She was told by Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society that they found him but never checked for the chip. They simply killed her cat. Someone needs to investigate this operation. They present an image of doing good work when it comes to dogs and cats. However, I am very suspicious of their activities. Sincerely, Corlis F. PRO : What this shelter does is wonderful. They do save alot of lives, and they take good care of the animals they have. They do love the animals, and I love that everytime I go down there I see staff walking and playing with the dogs. They have a great prgram for Pitbulls called Save-A-Bull. They also offer low cost spay and neuter. CON: Be prepared if you have an appointment, to wait. And wait. And wait some more. The desk staff are rude and the whole place is disorganized. If you call, Don't expect a call back or to even speak to someone in person. read more

So today I decided to fly a kite with my daughter with everything that going on in the world with covid and all. There is a field that is right down the street from my house that I've been going to for the past six years with no issue at all it's a police k9 memorial and it leads down to the humane society. My daughter, my girlfriend and I went there with our dog like we usually do and decided to fly kites. For some reason a volunteer decided to walk from the front of the establishment towards us which we were a little less then a quarter mile away. She insisted that we leave the private property which there are no signs posted stating that it's private property and that if we wouldn't that she would have staff come out and tell us. Me not understanding the issue said that she should have someone come and explain what the issue is with me flying a kite in a open field with my daughter. Staff came out and stated that the kite was scaring the dogs which I didn't understand because there were two other volunteers walking dogs and the dogs weren't even phased by the kite plus the first volunteer that actually went out her way to come up to us had a dog with her and the dog wasn't phased at all wasn't even looking at the kite the dog was sniffing the grass and doing his business. Now I have to deal with my daughter crying because we had to cut our kite flying short. It's unbelievable that the staff at the humane society in Menands, NY have nothing else better to do during work hours then to stop a father and daughter from flying a kite especially with the way the world is today, also not to mention my daughter and I are of color if we weren't would that have happen? I truly, honestly don't understand what the issue was with me enjoying my day with my daughter!? It's just sad the way the world is going. Management needs to look into productivity in that building and possibly reassess staff and volunteers that work there! Just sad. I will be following up with city hall and also calling the mayor as well. read more

I do like this place and they do their best to keep it up, but some of the staff seem overwhelmed. One of the receptionists there was somewhat on the moody side and was snippy and snotty at times. Also the adoption counselors were nowhere to be found when I tried to get info from them on certain pets. They also WILL NOT RETURN CALLS. If you're interested in a particular animal on their site and want more info, your best option is to go down there in person, because they will not call or email you (altho they say they will). I went thru this just before I finally went down there to look at the cats I was interested in. However...In spite of this, I still recommend this place. I adopted my cat Serena here and would do so again. read more

I adopted a cat name Freda from the mohawk Hudson humane society on September 1, 2018 was not informed that the cat was sick with a upper respiratory infection so we brought the cat home and my other cat that we already had was exposed to the infection so we realize that the cat was sneezing green and yellow mucus at that point we went back to the humane society and they gave us and appointment for the cat and at that point they gave us medication for the cat. the point that I am trying to make is read the paper work that they give you because once you walk out that door if you have a sick animal they are going to tell you that they inform you. never again will I adopt from there now I have to take both of the cats to a veterinarian. staff not helpful at all. read more

DO NOT ADOPT FROM THIS SHELTER. My son, a student with no money, incurred over $3,000 in veterinary bills within days of adopting a cat. The cat was treated by a vet for many issues including anemia and a potential blockage in her GI tract. The cat had to have blood work, exploratory surgery, a biopsy, a transfusion and went into cardiac arrest. On the day of the surgery, my son tried multiple times to contact the shelter-who totally ignored him. He could no longer wait and had the surgery done, otherwise the cat would have died. The shelter would not tap into their "Guardian Angel Fund" to assist with some of the bills because the costs were incurred without pre-approval from or an agreement with their organization. He tried many times to contact the shelter before the surgery-they did not respond. What was he supposed to do? Let the cat die?? read more

Kind of disappointed in the care at this facility. My husband and I had been looking high and low to adopt the right kitty. We found him and then the volunteer was like oh you must see this one and she could tell I'm weak when it comes to animal. And she kept saying you get a discount if you get 2 ... we knew for sure we were getting the little orange guy and after making us feel bad we took the black and white girl. She was a sweet girl don't get me wrong but something was off we took her to the vet and 100 dollars later they tell us she had an infection before spaying her so now she she needs antibiotics that cost us more then we paid for her but we love animals and could never see an animal hurting so we gladly paid . The little guy at first was fine then he started being Lethargic took him in thinking it was a similar but after our vet looked at him she thought it was the feline equivalent to parvo ! They had to do test turns out he doesn't have that but something is wrong since he's had Diarrhea and won't eat since we brought him home so they sent us home with meds and I'm currently using a syringe to feed him this has been an awful experience I am allllll about rescuing there is no other way but all in all two cats cost me almost 800 which is absurd! Just be aware of what your signing up for !!! read more

January 2nd, 2017 I adopted my cat, from the Petsmart in Latham. They got her from this humane society. She's 7, and seemed perfectly healthy. Now 2 months later, she starts to get sick... Sick as in had to take her to the ER. She had bloody stool and vomiting, also pain in her stomach. Come to find out that she had a preexisting medical condition with her intestines, and now she is dying. Unless I got a surgery for her intestines which would be about $3,000 that I just do not have. Oh, also the surgery isnt guarenteed that she will be 100% better. I am VERY upset that no one had any information on her being sick before I adopted her, I've called them and they said they don't help with anything after 2 weeks after adoption. Seriously? I adopted 3 cats from you, and you can't help me? I am sad that my cat is suffering because she became part of the family. Thanks MOHAWK HUMANE! read more
