Monthly visits work best for me, and I gladly drive 35-45 minutes each way because I wouldn't trust anyone else with this task. We brought our dog Ruby, a small cockapoo, in on a Friday morning for a full grooming. Included in the package was daycare for the rest of the day, which is nice for people who have to work on a weekday (most people, I imagine). We asked for a puppy cut, and they did a great job: the sensitive parts were trimmed and shaved, the tummy and paw pads were shaved, and her nails were cut. Ruby got a high quality bath too. Her coat was uniformly fluffed, and so soft! She smelled good for days afterwards. Ruby had a great time there; her tail was wagging when we picked her up. No nicks or cuts anywhere on her. Before even allowing me to ask any questions, the woman cuts me off and says the are not taking any new clients and in the same breathe talking about they are booking out to March. I've been bringing my dog here for a few years now and have never had an issue, until now. I brought Sophie in on Monday morning and picked her up in the afternoon. I didn't notice anything at the time, but by Tuesday morning I noticed a large red spot on her shoulder. I was with her all night and did not see her scratching or licking/biting the area. I called Head to Tail Tuesday afternoon and told them what I had noticed and they said I could bring her in that evening for them to look at it. As the day went on the sore seemed to be getting worse and was clearly causing her pain so I made the decision to take her to the vet where she was given a steroid shot and a topical medication. When I brought her into the store, the woman was asking whether she had been scratching and seemed to insinuate that this was some kind of rash that was unrelated to the grooming. She took down some information and said that she'd have the owner, Marie call me the next day. Which brings me to today... I did not get a call from Marie and decided to call myself in the afternoon. I was very pleasant and asked her if she had heard about the situation at which point she started to get very nasty with me. She kept saying "well, what do you want me to do about it?". I explained that my dog has not had any skin conditions before and that this was obviously a result from the grooming that she had the day before. She kept interrupting me and insisting that this was not their fault and then ultimately told (yelled at) me to mail my vet bill to her and never come back there again. I had called from my work phone and once we hung up she called back. She told me "I'm even more mad now because I read your notes and your dog comes in matted." I'm sorry, but I thought that was what the groomer was for? If you can't handle matted hair without harming my dog, then you should have said so beforehand. Also, how dare she tell me that she's mad when my poor dog is the victim here?? To top it off, she felt the need to threaten my job by saying that she would complain about me being rude (after I said I was going to post this review)... I used to work there and everyone actually was telling me I was doing a great job every time I asked how I was doing and if I did need to change something I would. I was fired the week before Christmas .. The owner Marie treated me like absolute garbage the day she fired me and told me that I had "lied about my experience with animals" as a boss and as a grown women to say such mean and hurtful things to a person was just uncalled for and completely disrespectful to the point where she made me cry as I was leaving there. I LOVED the dogs there and I did let them know I had personal things going on. Marie was incredibly rude when firing me. She told me I was just not working well there after I had asked constantly how I was doing and she always said I was doing good. For years, my parents have brought their tiny poodle here for grooming, and she always has a great experience. So, just this week, for the first time, we decided to bring our tiny yorkie here for grooming. Usually we bring her to PetSmart, and we've never had a bad experience there, but we felt it was best to try another groomer. So, we brought the pup in first thing in the morning, at which time I met several other happy puppies being dropped off for grooming. Our pup was done being groomed faster than PetSmart, she looked better (much more like a yorkie), and she could hang out in the playroom with other puppies while she waited for us to come get her. And let me tell you, the icing on the cake with this experience was that our pup was MUCH happier than she usually is when we would pick her up from PetSmart. I think Head to Tail has a better setup and is much more comfortable for dogs. Again, not that we've had a bad experience at PetSmart, but our pup had a MUCH better experience at Head to Tail. The staff were incredibly pleasant and knowledgeable. We will, for sure, be bringing our yorkie here from now on. It actually seemed like they groom a lot of smaller dogs, though I did see a few big ones as well. Overall, it's a very comfortable place for pets. Would highly recommend. 5-stars. read more

Cute Ma and Pa pet supply store that's well-stocked and a bit idiosyncratic, the way you want a local independent to be. They have a doggy daycare right on the premises, limited to an indoor area, but the dogs are visible from the store and appear to be having a great time every time I go in here. Prices are marked up, as you might expect, however. Another downside is parking; you will have to park in back, as the Gershon's parking lot in front is both full and a nightmare to get in and out of on the rare occasions you see a spot. (Beware: there is an actual traffic light regulating your exit from this front lot, and it's insanely complicated by the pedestrian crosswalk to the right and the sidewalk in front of you.) The lot in back unfortunately is often full as well, so it makes it difficult to do spontaneous stop and go shopping at this location. read more

We are beyond pleased with our experience at Head to Tail! Our eight-year-old Great Pyrenees / Australian Shepherd mix had never been groomed before (we rescued him less than a year ago) and we were originally thinking of bringing him to Petsmart. After calling Petsmart numerous times and getting quoted all different amounts (ranging from $65 - $90+) for a basic wash and trim, we remembered we had a gift certificate to Head to Tail. We called and they were able to get us in right away! The entire staff is so warm, friendly, and accommodating. Everyone welcomed us into the shop when we arrived and the staff did everything in their power to help our doggie feel happy and comfortable. I love the location on Upper Union and all of the awesome toys, treats, and other goodies inside. We dropped him off for a few hours, and we were told we could actually pick him up as late as 5:00 (all of the groomed dogs get to hang out at doggie daycare for the remainder of the day)! Upon pickup he seemed very happy and was sporting a cute custom bandana. They also gave us a few doggie cookies for the road. We were so impressed with the level of personal attention and customer service! And I must say, I've never seen our Mason looking so clean and fluffy! I can't stop cuddling and petting him-- he looks, smells, and feels fantastic! After liking their Facebook page (which I highly recommend) we noticed they posted 50 photos from that day, and our Mason was looking so happy amongst his new doggie friends. I took my dog in on March 9th to get his winter coat coat cut. We have had his coat cut there twice before in the prior year with excellent results and their store has many great things for sale, from food to pet supplies. But, this time was not so good. When I brought him home, I noticed his left eye would not open. Even when I forced it, he would squeeze it shut. I immediately called my vet and brought him down to be seen before they closed. Apparently, some shampoo or something else got into his eye and caused a chemical burn. After getting diagnosed and getting medicine for his eye which cost me $167 on top of the $73 I paid (including tip) for the grooming appointment. Subsequent followup appointments cost me another $140 in office visits. When I called Head to Tail to inform them what happened on the 9th, the groomer who was speaking to the counter person while the phone was off the hook denied they were the cause of it and flatly refused to offer to pay my vet bill. They were obviously unaware I was able to hear their conversation because they asked for permission to call the vet and confirm my accusation. The vet sent the bill to them and when I called to followup, the said someone would call be back with a resolution. On my second followup call after I received no call back, I was told I would be contacted and it has now been over a week since that call. I cannot in good conscience recommend this place, as I had last year. They refused to accept that it could have been their error that caused the injury, their failure to followup and offer any kind of payment or refund, and no offer of apology or acceptance of their part. I understand accidents happen, and would not have held anything against if they offered at least and apology and refund of my grooming fee. read more

we have had our white poodle trimmed there several times before with decent results. I won't say great and I won't say bad but the price was good. about three weeks ago, we took our dog in for a grooming "apparently" with the same groomer, and when we got him back, I immediately noticed how close they had shaved his belly and his rear end, which this groomer had never done before. he was acting very funny with major sensitivity to his rear end. over the next several days, it just got worse and worse to the point where we had to take him to the vet. we took him to Sand Creek Vet where the founder Dr. McDaniels examined him and said that they had shaved skin off of his bottom side in two places. One where he was neutered, and another one closer to the rear. They had to put him on powerful steroids for two weeks to get rid of the infections. I called the people at head to tail to inform them that we were taking him to the vet and they said they would notify the owner immediately. It has now been nearly 3 weeks and nobody from head to tail has even picked up the phone to call and find out what happened or most importantly how our pet was doing. our dog is now pretty much back to normal thank goodness but this is incredibly disappointing the least they could do is refund the grooming and pick up our $145 vet bill. Head to Tail has been our go-to grooming place for our terrier. The staff is friendly and they do a good job with the grooming. They run a doggie daycare as well and you can partially see the playroom from the register area. It's easy to drop him off and pick him up; usually we drop him off right before we go to work in the morning and pick him up right after work in the afternoon. The only annoying part of the visit is that there are limited parking spots in front of the store. The first time we brought him in, they asked if he was friendly with other dogs. Since he's very social and loves other dogs, they let him play with other doggie clients during the day. This is my favorite part and of course, his favorite part! I feel bad leaving him at home during the workday so it's nice to know that he's getting lots of playtime when we bring him for a grooming appointment. And when he gets home after a day here, he is pooped! The grooming prices are in line/better than other prices I've seen in the area. And Head to Tail gives us a little baggie with 1-2 small treats as a send-off. read more

I've been here with my dog twice. The first time I received a gift card to use on grooming for my 25 pound dog, and the second time to get his nails trimmed. The first time I was pretty annoyed because his grooming appointment was at 1:00pm, but I could pick him up as late as 4:00p from the daycare. I asked how long to grooming takes when dropping him off, and they said around thirty to forty-five minutes. So, I arrive right around 2:00p to pick him up, only to discover they didn't even start the process! His appointment was at 1:00p! I'm aware that I can pick him up as late as 4:00p, but everyone has a schedule. Just because he CAN stay there that late doesn't mean that I can accommodate that time. When I explained my frustration the woman behind the counter seemed annoyed, and didn't bother to tell anyone to move the process along. Overall, my dog wasn't ready until almost 3:00p, and I didn't return for some time. Finally, I decided to go back for the free nail trim that you can receive once your dog is groomed there. Well, that only took a few minutes, but there is NO WAY to tip on a card unless you buy something. If you have a service-based business, you should have a way to leave a tip on a card without purchase. Not many people carry cash, and every pay-ahead/complementary service business I go to allows for a tip as is. Last, my dog was pretty horrified coming out. He gets his nails cut often enough to not be scared, and took him almost a full day to be himself again. However, I will say when there were over 30inches of snow on the ground, barely able to drive down the street let alone park for 5 minutes to grab my 96 year old grandfather a sandwich... the owners and workers of this establishment bombarded my car to tell me to move... there were 3 spots open for other customers. Head to Tail allows you to drop your dog off before work (7:30) and pick your dog up either as soon as they are finished grooming or anytime before 4:00 p.m. After your first grooming your dog is able to go in anytime for a free nail trim. The grooming price is fair and your furry friend leaves with a cute bandana, some homemade treats, and smelling better than when he arrived! The staff is knowledgeable about the products they sell, and when asked, they will let you know how your dog did. When I did get my baby in I came back to get her at the end of the day and noticed a blue thing around her neck. I asked them what it was that was on her...... I was told it was a "bandana" That was what the owner told me directly to my face. Ok, I told you she had issues, I told you to CALL me if there were any problems, Never never would I have allowed them to use a bark collar on a 12 pound dog do you put a collar around your child when they act up? Loved this place when it first opened. Convenient, friendly, affordable whats not to like. Until recently when my Golden retriever came home from grooming with a huge gash in the back of her ear. When she was dropped off we instructed for them not to trim near her neck or head because she didnt need it but they ignored that and went ahead anyway. Not only did they shave and cut behind one ear, when i confronted them about it 2 days later they blamed the dog having matting which she had none whatsoever and then after i showed them a photo of the cut they tried to tell me that she had a hot spot and she had irritated it. I think i would know if my own dog had a cut or sore on her body before bringing her in for grooming and if they noticed it right away then why wouldnt they tell me when i picked her up?? Their story kept changing and instead of apologizing and taking ownership they denied, lied and tried to give me a lesson on dogs fur matting and hot spots. I was very surprised by this since i thought so highly of them when they opened but the owner did nothing but defend her groomer and pretty much tried to call me a liar, like i really need to scam their business for a lousy $35, who would lie about that? didnt even care about the refund which they did issue, but just own up to something you did wrong...especially when it comes to treating other peoples pets. I recently went to Head to Tail and because I am a new dog owner (meaning I haven't had a dog in about 30+ years) I was concerned about taking my 1 year old to a new groomer. (The old groomer I went to went out of business) I read all the reviews on Yelp, and decided to give Head To Tail a try. First, I explained that I did not know how my dog would handle a new groomer, and I was concerned about leaving him a long time so I asked, do you think for the first time coming here for grooming, I should pick him up right away? She said "That's up to you." Well I said that since I was dropping him off at 7:30 in the morning, would it be ok, if I could get him by 12 or 1? She said, no problem. My dog looked great and was very happy and I was too, until... The second time I took my dog back to Head to Tail and said that I would pick him up at 4:00 because I had to work. On my way there, I was 3 minutes late, I received a phone call asking if I was coming to get my dog. I said yes, that I was literally up the road and they immediately hung up. When my dog came out, he was not himself at all. He was cowering and would not run up to me and when I got him home, he was scared of me, his owner and it took 2 full days for him return to "normal". Finally, I wanted to give this business the benefit of the doubt and brought my dog back a third time and may I say, that each time I went to this business, I asked that my dog get bathed, groomed, nails cut and ears cleaned. When I took my dog to the vet 1 week after his last grooming at "Head to Tail", his ears were so dirty, that the vet said that it was a good thing he cleaned them, because my dog could have gotten an infection from the amount of dirt in his ears. I then asked, is having my dog cleaned and groomed (along with his ears) once a month enough, he replied yes and where did you take him, I told him and he immediately suggested another groomer. They are friendly but the owner really gets annoyed sometimes when you ask questions, but does try to help as much as possible, do have a good selection of food, toys etc., but you can get that stuff anywhere. Let me start by saying this is the first negative review Ive ever written. The groomer here cut our 8 month old puppy under both arm pits and his paw (pictures are uploaded). Our puppy is in so much pain and so uncomfortable- its heartbreaking. They denied it and laugh and mocked us. They meaning the owner, grooming manager, and groomer. We went to our vet who said that due to grooming cuts, he now has a bacterial infection. We brought the written up prognosis to Marie (the owner)- she didn't believe us and called the vet. The vet of course told her exactly what he wrote. She refunded our money and paid for our vet visit. None the less she denied it and attacked us verbally. It was the most upsetting, disgusting experience Ive ever had. They should never be allowed to be near animals. They are mean, careless people. read more

Have had a great experience getting my 5lb Yorkie groomed. The price is fair ($40 for a bath, hair cut, teeth brushed and ears cleaned), the staff is friendly, and the facility is welcoming. They have a ton of goodies for you to buy for your pet (treats, shampoos, etc). As long as your dog gets along with others he/she can play with others before or after he/she gets groomed. They don't keep the animals locked in a crate. Will definitely be maki them our preferred groomer for our dog. read more

Service has always been excellent. Groomers are professional and do a wonderful job on our dogs. Owner is obviously an animal lover and is very well versed in every dog and cat food in the shop. I trust her judgement completely for what she feels is good for my individual needs for my pets. The Shop is always very clean and neat and very well stocked. If there is something that I can't find she will order it for me. Her day care staff is alert and they watch the dogs assigned to them carefully. They love their job and it shows. If there is a problem, there is enough staff in the back available to assist. The staff in the front are all courteous and friendly and are always busy. I love all the 'special' little things that I find when I go there. My dog absolutely LOVES to go to Head to Tail. They do a very good job bathing and grooming him. He leaves looking like a prince. But the best part is that before and after his grooming he gets to play with the dogs in doggy daycare. He's not stashed in a crate behind a one-way mirror. There are both indoor and outdoor spaces for the dogs to play -- and my little guy is highly social so this environment is perfect for him. Our dog is a rescue, he is an 7 year old lab, golden, great Pyrenees mix, in short he has hair and a lot of it and is 75 to 80 lbs. We have been to Pet Smarts, Pet Co, (the groomer we liked at PetCo moved further away). I tried Head to Tail based on a neighbors suggestion. They have been great. I will not leave him any where for any length of time in which he is crated, as I know he does not like it. The ability to leave him all day and not crated is great, to boot he gets a play day with other dogs. For what we have done (the full boat - bath, cut, nails, teeth, etc.) they have the best price around. Head to Tail has also been a savior for us. I do not know what happened at Pet Smart, but the last couple of time I took him to Albany store he shied away for them. He also started to be hesitant to go to the one in Latham. When we arrive at Head to Tail he is always excited to go in and see them, almost as excited as he is to see me when I have been away a couple of days. To me that says it all........ My experience with this privately owned shop was excellent. Yes, the parking is challenging especially around noon. But the environment more than makes up for it. My dog had a previous horrific experience (cut requiring 11staples) at another groomers, so he is very skittish. He won't tolerate being in a crate before or after. Here he was free to be on the floor in the "playroom" where the other dogs were playing and comfortable. Judy took extra time grooming him due to his anxiety and he came out looking great.
