I was in the area of Wolf Road and I checked my GPS to find the nearest pet supply store. My GPS directed me to Benson's. When I saw all of the great reviews, I was floored. There are so many great products available at the store that I didn't know about. For instance, if I wanted to feed my dogs frozen venison, there's a freezer full of venison products for dogs here. I actually needed pee pads for the puppy-- who's still in training--and I was looking for new doggie bed that both pets could share. The assortment of beds there was just too much to look through and I figured I'd come back another time when I wasn't in a hurry. The staff is helpful and friendly. When I asked for assistance in locating the pee pads, the clerk actually apologized that they were running low on stock, even though I was able to purchase exactly what I was looking for. This is a big store with a lot of interesting, hard to find stock. I recommend it highly, but the best way to shop at Benson's is to give yourself plenty of time to see all of the inventory.

We came here for a dog tag for our basset hound and I found the process a bit annoying. The friendly staff then kept recommending multiple different ones over and over which we didn't want. We settled on one and I took it to the engraving station, but was told I had to pay for it first (fair). Then, you take it and scan the receipt into the computer and finally you can design your tag. It all is reasonable, but I wish it had been a bit more intuitive. That being said, the store has lots of fun things for pets including a dog biscuit buffet. Are they the best quality treats? Probably not, though from past experience I know that the cookies are actually diabetic cookies which can also be eaten by humans (don't ask!). The staff were friendly, perhaps too friendly, but I would rather have that than be ignored. We also liked looking at the birds and hamsters and other animals for sale.

Tonight I stopped in during Troy Nigh Out because I heard Mugzy's Barkery was there selling homemade, all natural and organic dog treats. I spoke with the lovely owner of HLB and Jaimie from Mugzy's for some time and then walked around the shop trying hard to restrain myself from buying everything in sight. The shop is clean and the owner is an absolute doll. I wish I got down that way more often, but this will always be high on my list of places to stop when I do.

Employees are often not communicated with until last minute about staying beyond their designated shift and they are asked to perform tasks well outside of their hired job description. For example, incubating and raising ducks and chickens inside the bathroom of the business. This also led to the heat lamp blowing from being left on all the time, and causing a small fire that was thankfully caught by another employee before it caused any damage to people, the dogs or the building. The ducks and chickens remained even after. The entire bathroom was virtually unusable as the ducks and chickens were allowed to roam around defecating on the floor.

Nice selection of leashes and a good amount of dog toys. They also carry items for smaller pets like hamsters and gerbils. If you are looking for travel pet carriers, they do have some. I don't love that they sell dogs here, so that's the only real con to this store. Would love to see them team up with a local rescue or humane society and give them space to showcase dogs who don't have homes. They also sell birds and smaller critters like hamsters.

I am sure that the thoroughness has saved many a pup from a bad situation. They were dedicated to the rescue of many lovely little dogs and for that, I am happy to have been a part of them. I recently adopted a little Chihuahua from them, she was from a shelter in South Carolina and came through their gracious network. From the time of my first inquiry with them to adoption I found their communication to be on point, clear, candid, and open minded. I spoke to Jennifer, Nancy, Marge, and others. I From the time of my inquiry to adoption was a time frame of about 2 weeks. My experience was they promptly replied to my emails, picked up my phone calls, would return email me back even late hours into the nights and weekends, this organization is obviously driven by a profound sense of service and devotion. I would probably mention that since they are volunteer driven, if you have your heart set an a pup with them and it doesn't follow up through to adoption, be patient, be kind, and keep trying. It doesn't mean you are not a good person or candidate for a dog! I invite you to keep faithful and remain patient , it will all be worth it in the end once you can connect with your adoptive family member. They are not a for profit business, they are a for-happiness and pro-altruism rescue. They are a 501c3. Offer to volunteer, foster, and keep an open heart and mind. Each dog is a unique individual and I would encourage you to understand that once the time is right you will connect with your forever baby. They followed up with me afterwards, assisting me with procuring multiple medical records from out of state, even going the extra mile to mail me microchip and rabies tags. They even patiently and lovingly replied to all of my updates that the dog they placed with me was thriving. Wow. I'm writing this because I cannot believe the happiness my little angel has brought to me, she came from a tough past and now it is her time to be treated like royalty. I ended up going with 3 shrimp, Bubba, Lt. Dan, and Jenny. I also like how they have their fish separated by aggression levels. I went to another local aquarium shop recently and they had cichlids, semi aggressive, and community fish all mixed together.

I was there today and it wasn't busy, but the shipment was being unloaded. I pulled my ticket but no one was calling out numbers. I finally asked a woman for help but she said "I don't work here but I'll let them know". At that point I just left. I've been ignored there for 25 years going back to the old Latham location. One positive experience I had was a few years ago. They had species plant I wanted but there was only a couple left. The salesman informed me that they had some that were yet to be unpacked in the back room. Long story short he was reprimanded for selling plants that weren't yet in the display case (in front of me while I was checking out). That ruined the experience and made me feel I did something wrong. So I guess I never had a positive experience, I just witnessed someone going above and beyond being treated like trash. It's sad to say, but I'm actually happier walking in and not seeing anything I want to buy. The stressful part is seeing something I want and having to jump through hoops to get someone's attention and get service. I have actually shopped here, against my better judgement. I fell in love with a young Syrian (teddy bear) hamster and had to bring her home. Two weeks later, she gave birth to eight pups, because this store apparently can't be bothered to segregate the small animals by sex. I could have just taken the pups back, but I couldn't bear to take them back there, so I separated the boys and girls at hamster puberty and found them homes myself.
