I flew in on Friday and headed to the convention center for the expo. Packet pickup on Friday was a breeze (it was on Saturday, too, when I returned with my running partner, but more crowded). This expo seemed smaller than some of the others and some of my fave vendors were absent (Sparkly Soul, ProCompression, Nuun), but plenty of local vendors, which is great for those who live in North Texas. 5K On Saturday, I participated in the inaugural 5K, which was organized in Fair Park. 2 of the 3 miles were through the park, but one mile was on an out and back on a road leading to one of the entrances (not so interesting). Even with this short distance, there was a water stop, which is nice. Finish line was well-staffed with volunteers handing out medals, bananas, water, etc. A live band was playing at the end, too. Corrals were self-seeded based on estimated pace (6/7/8/9/10 minute miles).Compared to other 5Ks, RNR definitely offers more amenities. Half Marathon Sunday was part two for those of us doing the remix challenge (running the Saturday and Sunday events). For the longer events, RNR seeds corrals based on estimated finish time, though they are not enforced. This was obvious over the first few miles when we encountered plenty of walkers (which for people with my corral would not involve much walking). 2015 brought a new course, but since I'd never run this one before, I can't compare. It was continuously hilly, and heavily on concrete streets (which I really felt later in the race), many of which were in poor condition, which meant I spent a lot of the race looking down to avoid tripping hazards. For a RNR event, this course seemed to be light on the entertainment. There were a handful of bands, which were really good, but then long stretches with no music and a few spots where there were speakers hooked up to a sound system. Kudos to the volunteers along the course and at the finish line. You are so appreciated!! As far as scenery, I loved running over the new bridge and near the turtle creek park. We finished at the American Airlines Center. Crowd support was great when we came across it, but again, long stretches without. Not my favorite event, but always well organized by the Competitor Group.

It's a great way to see the city. This race is always very organized with bag/gear check, and the volunteers and spectators are always awesome. The expo where you pick up your race packet was stocked with swag and goodies. I love getting my drawstring bag every year as well as the dri fit shirt. The medal was great this year too! It's a pricey race but you do get a bang for your buck so it's worth it. My only issue with the shirts would be that they would make them more gender specific. Other than that I very much enjoy this race and will definitely be back next year! Up next San Diego!!

This is one of many beautiful parks in and around Valley Ranch that has a small trail to go on a…read morestroll or run, as well as water fountains and an actual park/playground for the kiddos. There is not a ton of parking nearby but you can park in the neighborhoods or over by the Barbara Bush track before the middle school opens in the mornings. This is also a great destination to view the sunrise or sunset skies and it is colorful with lots of nature. Lots of runners and walkers meet in the area in the mornings to do their daily miles. Bring a flashlight and a buddy if you workout in the earlier hours of the day or towards sunset. But great for families or your furry friends. The neighborhood that surrounds this park is so cute! It's so quiet too. The park has a tiny parking lot, so I parked and took my walk through, taking pictures. I saw three other people during my visit. Two with dogs. I was super surprised to see a huge patch of bluebonnets. You don't see those often in Dallas proper, unless on the side of the highway. The trail goes to a creek and there are some homes across the way. It's so peaceful. It's definitely worth checking out, but maybe not a destination-must-go-now. I'm happy to know this place is close by, and maybe on another nice day I could walk to it. Great job to the neighbors for putting this nature walk together. It's lovely, and a good recharge to the soul to be out in it.

Once you walk past the organized rock constructions that make the entrance, the unpaved path gets a bit rugged and poorly maintained. I didn't mind it because it created a sense of "natural wilderness" that is absent in many artificial/human-maintained parks. I saw at least 7 different bird species and plenty of squirrels in my first 5 minutes, so that was exciting. Too bad it is such a small place! I was done in less than 20 minutes.

All the dog owners there were friendly and respectful of having to be in leash. Like I said, nice little off leash trails if you want a cute adventure and then about a mile long paved road if you wanna stick to just something short and simple. There are a few benches were you can come have a meal or just chill. It is also right in front of a school so safety is always a priority. I like the park because they have recently remodeled everything including the tennis courts. Only downfall is there are no trees for coverage on the courts so when it is really hot you need to bring a lot of water. For the most part the park is always quiet. Only con is if you come play tennis with a family you could run into high school teens smoking pot in the back bench. They literally don't care if you see them nor do they try to hide it. I have no problem with it. However if you are against it or with younger kids/family that would be the only con I have for the park.

The gym is super convenient, located on the corner of Main and South Country in Frisco, and it has off-street parking in the garage behind the gym. The facility is well-stocked, organized, and clean. There's a small area to the left of the entrance where you can buy merchandise, seating to the right with cubbies for your belongings, and the group workout room is to the far right. The group workout room has 12 bays, each with its own small area and equipment for the class. Outlaw also offers Personal Training for individuals, couples, and groups in the open gym area at the back of the building. Plus, there are cubbies, a scale, and other body metric tracking equipment in the back of the gym, next to the workout area. There are also two restrooms nearby, and a Flow station water machine to refill your water bottles with cool, filtered water. I've taken the group class myself, and it really gets the heart pumping! If you're someone who finds long, slow workouts a bit dull, this class might just be your thing. The trainer guides everyone through the moves and keeps the energy up by counting down the time to the next one. I was surprised how much I got out of a 30-minute session as it felt like I was actually working hard and not just sitting around. Plus, it didn't feel like it was dragging on, which is great for someone who's just starting to get back into strength training. After class, I got a high-protein snack and a friendly reminder to drink water. I've also had the chance to work with a personal trainer, and Paul is fantastic! He's patient, knows his stuff, and always encourages you. I really loved learning why we do the exercises the way we do. He takes his time, explains things clearly, and gently pushes you to try things you thought you couldn't do by offering modifications that make it easier. I left feeling both worked out and empowered, with a real sense of accomplishment. Instead of feeling defeated, I wake up excited to go to the gym because I know I'm in good hands with my trainer. Lydia, the owner, is also very sweet and always encouraging, working hard to make everyone feel like they're part of a team. Everyone I've met, from the staff to the customers, has been friendly and supportive. Overall, I'd say this gym has been one of the best I've been to in a while.
