I love this place and been here several times when I lived close to downtown. Just the smell outside the store is so divine and drive you in to get those light, buttery croissants. I didn't even realize croissants can be a Japanese thing until we ate here.. this place is pricey but not as pricey as some of the french patisseries I've reviewed before. Another new Asian-y food place popularized by social media. Was it worth the hype? Well... I went in person to line up for the free box of 6 croissants on the 2nd day of grand opening. I went pretty early to ensure I got my freebie, and was pretty forward in the line. I also purchased an additional croissant not in the box. Overall, I thought the taste was just... meh. Buttery, flakey, and fresh yes, but it just misses the mark in all aspects. I've had much better (more buttery tasting, more flakey, more fresh out of oven) in other patisseries and bakeries in GTA. Everything at hazukido was a little too sweet, underwhelming, and so so soooo small for what they charge. $5+ for a tiny croissant is just ridiculous, even for dt toronto. Honeycomb: their plain butter croissant, which I always use to deem the true taste of croissants. I ate this straight out of the box, so it was a bit cold but still crispy. Too sweet, too small, again, underwhelming. Chocolate hazelnut: kinda special, since most places inject chocolate filling inside, hazukido has a glaze over top similar to ice cream bars. Reminds me of a ferrero rocher. Outer layer is very very crunchy and kinda overpowers the croissant itself, so all you taste is the hard chocolate shell. I could see many ppl liking this, but I wasnt a fan. Truffle crab: also very unique. It's creamy, but I could not taste the truffle at all. Where is it??? Salted egg yolk: isnt it salted? All I taste is an egg yolk custard. It does ooze after being heated, but I've definitely had better versions of this with a more savoury and imo, better, flavouring. Custard: it's just. Alright. I guess. Raspberry panna cotta: the raspberry filling was actually pretty decent, a bit sour with a lemon-y flavour. Even though I'm not a huge fan of raspberry, I actually enjoyed this. Golden cheese (purchased): so very disappointed. I LOVE cheese croissants, and I find they're pretty rare in croissant shops, so I was excited to try this. Unfortunately, I dont think I'll be buying this again. The cheese on top didnt seem encrusted, more like a cheese glaze that solidified after cooling. It was... sweet cheese. I was incredibly confused, especially after reaching the centre which had, sweet mayo? Perhaps this is more in tune with asian tastes for cheese croissants, but I definitely wasn't a fan. Overall, I was thankful for the free box. Taste was decent and enjoyable for their individuality, but i certainly wont be paying these prices for them nor going out of my way again. Very instagrammable though... if that's your thing. (11/11 was their first day grand opening. I got 6 croissants, and ate 3. All the croissants were good, but was it worth the wait? Probably not. The only croissant that totally blew us away was the 'Caramel Almond & Custard'. This doesn't seem that unique, but god damn the textures created the best combination. You got the flakey croissant crumbling on your first bite, coupled with the crunch of the almonds, and then the final ooze coming from the custard. This is AMAZING! The almonds resembled the taste of the honey butter chips you would find in Asian grocery stores, you know, the sweet and salty ones. My husband gave this a solid 9/10, I think I gave it 8.7/10 because I'm a jerk and can hardly give high scores. To be honest, the place was super nice, and I appreciated how much they tried to maintain PPE and physical distancing measures. I love how they use the app to entice customers to come back; there is a points reward system! Many people don't recognize this, but they responded to almost everyone's comments on their IG and ensured that updates were posted on their IG stories every few hours. This is commitment. I found out that they scrapped the app for freebies on Day 2, and just told people to line up. I think a business who can change plans and learn from mistakes has potential to build success in the future. I've had better croissants in my life, but for what it's worth, this is a place I would recommend for croissants in Toronto. You might ask me which other pastry locations are good, I suggest dropping by Delysee's. For myself, I'm interesting in trying Le Beau because they got a pretty big hype going for them as well. Folks gave this a pretty low rating for the grand opening, I don't think it's fair. I've spoken to at least 4 other friends who have been here, they all agree it's alright to good, but not mind-blowing. There are so many croissant options in the city now unfortunately Hazukido does not make the cut for me. A lot of reviews here talk about the small size of the croissants and the price, while that is true, If they tasted good it wouldn't be an issue for me. I got the chocolate hazelnut croissant and the croissant itself is not fresh, it tasted like supermarket croissants. the chocolate wasn't sweet and did not have much flavour and the hazelnut crunch was not crunchy. I'm glad there was no line, because I would have wasted my time. although the croissant was small, I did not finish it because I didn't want to waste my calories on this product. read more

Came down here on a Saturday morning. We got to the shop around 9:45am and waited for about 45 minutes to be served. Definitely didn't complain at first since they only allowed 7 people in the store at once so it was expected that we would have to wait. However, once we got into the store, we also understood another reason why it was taking such a long time to be served. There was ONE girl at cash doing walk ins....on a weekend. It was very disorganized from what I could see. We had ordered about two dozen assorted croissants, but some of the ones we wanted had run out, so the girl at cash had told us we can pay for it first, and they would give us a call in about 45 minutes to come back for pickup. About an hour passes by and no call. So we go back into the store to see if our order is ready and the girl tells us that some of it needs another 10-15 minutes. I also took a look into their open kitchen and I'm sorry, but the staff were very slow. I could appreciate the precision and professionalism but it was just too slow. In terms of the product, not worth the wait, I'm sorry... I was absolutely shocked that the croissants were so tiny. It honestly looked like they were barely proofed and just thrown into the oven. Aside from the size, the ones said to have fillings, were barely there. For its price, I expected a little bit more. Tried Hazukido for the first time after hearing my friend rave about this place and I already plan on returning Food ($4-$5) You cannot go wrong with any of the croissants here, they have so many unique flavours to choose from!! On this trip I got the Golden Cheese, Spicy Cod Roe and the Double Chocolate Croissant (not pictured) and they were some of the best croissants that I've had. These croissants were BUSSINN, they are flakey and crispy on the outside. My top pick would be the Spicy Cod Roe as I have never tasted anything like it. It honestly tastes like a pasta dish and I have no clue how a croissant could be so flavourful Drinks ($4-$6) Brown sugar drinks are my go to for most bbt spots and this Okinawa Brown Sugar Milk was better than places that specialize in bubble tea. Packaging was good because they take the time to put a cute golden bow with your order. Onto the tasty test... the croissant quality was Poor!! Dare I say, equivalent to croissants you can get in a regular grocery store injected with some filling or fancy toppings added to it. These were nothing compared to French bakeries or any artisanal bakeries. They weren't flakey or buttery and not worth $5 each. Moreover, each croissant was tiny! Maybe the ones I got in the signature box were a day old, but they did not taste fresh or flaky at all. The plain one tasted so bland and not buttery at all. I would say they were good, like a slightly smaller and emptier tim hortons croissant, but not great or amazing... so really, this place isn't worth the hype! Maybe I'm biased because I like croissants with substance which are flaky and crunchy on the outside and super soft on the inside that can pull apart. Oh, I miss France. These ones were quite hollow and lacked the layers of dough, butter, etc. Their recipe is missing something and their croissants are definitely overpriced. I love the idea of fusion desserts and this places serves up a lot of Asian flavours in a croissant. Although I can't say this place has fully lived up to my expectations. I guess I was hoping for a more substantial croissant, but where the pastry lacked, the filling somewhat made up for it. I got the salted egg yolk one since I'm a sucker for anything with salted yolk and honestly preferred the filling to the croissant itself. For the price (about $5) and the time spent (about 20 minutes) waiting to get the end product, I just didn't think it was worth it. This is definitely a treat as a box of the signature croissants set me back $24 but you get what you pay for! I preordered a box for my bf's mom and she really enjoyed them. The croissants are small but super flaky and we enjoyed both the sweet and savoury flavours. I tried the hazelnut chocolate croissant and I thought I was eating an actual Ferraro rocher! The truffle crab, salted egg yolk and custard were also so unique. This is not something that I would order on the regular due to its price (and it's all the way in the heart of Toronto) but if you're into pastries and croissants, I'd say it's worth a try! read more

Happened to be in the area and saw this new bake shop. I remember reading a piece on BlogTO about it. Specializing in croissants I had to give it a try. Went for the lemon glazed and the raspberry panacotta. Nice 'bake' on both. Though I preferred the raspberry panacotta over the lemon glaze. I found the lemon glaze to be overly sweet and unevenly thick. I admit I'm not a baker. I thought the croissants themselves were 'ok'. The various toppings/fillings may have been a novelty a few years ago but there are just so many good French bakeries in the city now. I'm sure everyone has their favorite. First of all, I was expecting a half decent service from this chain with minimal standard of customer service quality. I have visited there last Sunday around 3 PM, which is not a closing time by any stretch. A young woman who works there has taken my order and when I asked for the couple coffee, she looked at me like I was ordering something crazy and saying she doesn't have any coffee left. And she didn't even bother to make a new fresh pot of coffee. I was with the party so we were prepared to order least 6 cups of coffee, yet she was too lazy to make a pot of new coffee for us. She look completely annoyed, she didn't even bothered to say thank you. I don't recommend this place to anyone. I have not had such a low standard of service in a worst type of establishment. The flakiness of the croissant really reminded me of the croissants I enjoyed in Paris. Not many place in toronto can make it this flaky and decadent. Didn't have a chance to try a simple croissant but I assume that would've been delicious. The hazelnut chocolate croissant was glazed with chocolate so if you're chocolate fan, this is for you. The truffle crab leg is a savory flavour, I thought it'd be an odd flavour but the truffle is a hint in the Mayo and the crab leg brought out the sweetness. It's definitely worth trying. Salted egg yolk reminded me of the chinese custard bun but better because it has the croissant flakiness and buttery-ness to it. Hazelnut macaron was the least favourite of mine because I didn't take the croissant as much, more of the crunch of the macaron top but still good. read more

With such a creative menu and decent flavours it's hard to recommend this place for many of the reasons others have stated. The croissants themselves are identical to those you can find in a grocery store bakery(decent, just not the artisanal) . What makes them unique are the flavours which are actually great. BUT The croissants are smaller than any other that you can find by other trendy bakers in the city. SLOW SERVICE. No one has a defined role so you have many people just running around doing random things. I can't impress this upon you enough. It will shock you how slow the service is. I only had 10 people ahead of me and it took 1.5 hours to get my order. The only reason I stayed because I was in awe of how slow it was and my gf wanted to share her thoughts with the manager who just made nonsense excuses. It's amazing the lack of urgency when they had nearly 100 people lined up outside. So many more interesting places in the area to go to that will respect your time. read more

First time here and I have mixed feelings about it. Some are prejudicial on my part and may not apply to the reader and some are more objective. First, as I have often said, half of East Asia is secretly thankful to Japan for helping it put food on the table. Here is a Taiwanese business with a Japanese name whose website proclaims "HAZUKIDO insists on the Shokunin spirit of Japan" Really? Basically, these very nice Taiwanese people shall master the Japanese art of striving for perfection. I hope the Chinese team across the street selling AYCE sushi would read this and be inspired. The website of course makes no mention of Taiwan, but a cursory web search tells one that this "world-wide renowned" croissant chain is also in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia. Cool. But won't show up in Japan, I bet! So how was the croissant? Their croissants are more creative than the average and come basically in two varieties: sweet or savoury. Savoury includes Truffle Crab or Garlic while sweet includes Strawberry or Lemon (this one ironically). They had a buy 5 get 1 free promo, which I took advantage of given that I was a Hazukido virgin. The croissants are fine, but nothing mind-blowing. They are fresh (check), buttery (check) and come in unexpected flavours and kinds (check and check), but nothing stopping a Canadian company from taking over their market and business. But of course, we won't because all we do is the same old same boring same old forever i.e. bags of 6 plain croissants at Loblaw for $9. Imagine a Canadian company showing flair locally. That is not going to happen so for now we have the Taiwanese company perfecting the art of Japanese French pastry bread in downtown Toronto. Speaking of which, they follow the Uncle Tetsu formula of hiring only East Asians (like I am supposed to imagine the uniformly non-Japanese employees at Uncle Tetsu are Japanese!?!?!?), having a distinctive bag and also a distinctive box. They do not even have a single plastic bag at their shop. The store was very clean and tidy (basically like a high-end pastry shop, but selling croissants), empty and the two girls were polite and helpful explaining things. As mentioned, I took advantage of the free sixth croissant offer, but the prices range from Chocolate ($3.45), which they call Deluxe for some reason to $4.95 for Golden Cheese to $5.49 for Truffle Crab for each croissant. read more

The croissants are smaller than your regular croissant and pricey for what it is. The lemon cream glazed had a hard shell exterior (not what i expected) and was sour and sweet. Inside wasn't as fluffy or buttery as I had hoped and the lemon flavour was quite overpowering. The caramel pudding was better. The pudding in the middle was quite unique! I am so happy I got to finally try these after seeing so many photos from my friends. They're incredible light and flakey and they have so many interesting flavors to try. I definitely will be coming back to try some of their other decadent flavors but this time I only got the classic honeycomb and a deluxe choco and a strawb choco. There was a short line but it wasn't bad, you could also pre-order some in advance so that you don't have to worry about a specific flavor being sold out. They just don't have the ingredients and have supply issues so you get what you get. Their grand opening promotion today for the first 30 orders (get a free box of 6 croissants) was a real sham. Besides their app being glitchy and crashing, I was able to get an order through. I even received an order confirmation number. 30 minutes later I received an email informing me my order was cancelled. So disappointed. Like wtf... who does that? I received a text saying BOGO was still going to happen and I thought I thought to give that a try. Nope, the app was hammered and I couldnt get my order through. Went to try this Taiwanese croissant chain's first N American location this morning around 1030am. The lineup wasn't very long but extraordinarily slow, and from what I observed it was due to the workers moving like molasses. I literally watched people being served at a snails pace one by one as 5 people were sitting behind the counter. Another guy took about 8 minutes to move croissants from baking sheet to tray before putting in the window to refill and empty tray. The girl serving us took 5 mins to get us our order (and we only ordered 2 croissants!!) and then slowly checked us out. All while it was wet snowing and cold outside and people waiting. Also, no one is keeping tabs on how many people are actually in the store, the sign on the door posted says 7 people max but at one point I had to tell people not to enter because there were already 11 people inside plus 5 staff. The Covid guidelines are in place for a reason: masks are not 100% protection and people do still have to distance 2m with them to bring transmission rates down to a negligible level. While the cod roe croissant was delicious, I won't be returning due to the poor efficiency of their service, overcrowding in the shop, and overpriced small croissants. They need to implement a curbside pickup process. read more

These croissants are nothing but generous. The quality and flakiness of each croissant is nothing like i've ever tasted before. The fusion of flavours are insanely good and is the perfect balance between sweet and decadent. I typically don't enjoy croissants because I feel like I'm eating a stick of butter but these unique flavours made me truly appreciate a croissant. The raspberry panna cotta was my fave because it was so refreshing and tarte. My next favourite was the salted egg yolk croissant which tastes exactly like the salted egg yolk buns you get from dim sum! I prefer the creme filled croissants such as the strawberry or caramel almond & custard. The banana chocolate and hazelnut macaron was nothing special but it was still tasty! When you get your croissants, I recommend heating it in the oven for 5 minutes to achieve the ultimate balance between the crispy exterior and soft interior. read more

Looking for a coffee place in a random rainy day in Toronto, and my choice fall on hazukido. Put myself in the line around 3:40 pm, and I had three customers in front of me. After 15 minutes, I had the opportunity to order a regular latte no sugar, nothing to difficult to prepare. After taking my order, I waited to received my coffee 10 more minutes and noticing that three customers that ordered after me received their drinks and croissants before. At that point, I asked politely the lady that took my order where was my coffee, and with a tone disappointed, answered me: "it's gonna be ready soon"... after 5 more minutes, I received my latte. Nothing else, but waiting for a simple latte 30 minutes is unacceptable. read more

But the customer service was so bad and I was treated so rudely, I will not be back.
