Other than döner kebaps in Berlin, this was my first shot at Turkish food. And the quality was much better! Ambience was very cool, and with an interesting eastern touch! The food was very flavorful and I was surprised how big the restaurant was. This place seems very popular. I would definitely come here again! Definitely not my last time with authentic Turkish cuisine! Yum!

Nestled under an overhanging grey office building and looking out over the romantic (if slightly scummy) waters of Docklands is the newly opened Hazev Turkish restaurant. Decorated by someone with a serious fetish for wood carvings and curtains, it comes across as a kind of "formal christmas" vibe which means it will be interesting to see if that attracts punters during the summer months. Perhaps they'll take back the curtains then - which at one point billowed from what I thought was a wall and almost enveloped me to the amusement of my friends. It has only been open for a few days, it was already filling out with a small crowd of people but with so many tables free then there was no problems getting a window seat. My two work colleagues had joined me to curiously try this place out, especially rating it against the other nearby Turkish restaurant, Mez. Staff thronged the entrance way and we were efficiently scooted over to the aforementioned window seat and drink orders taken. We decided on one colleague ordering from the menu and the other two of us going for the set menu "choose a starter and a main for 9.99" deal. Then the formally attired waiter brought our drinks - and he had gotten mine wrong. Diet coke instead of my lemonade. I valiantly pointed this out to him with quivering lower lip and ... actually I didn't really care to be honest, so I told him of the mistake (how will he learn otherwise?) and then said I would just take the coke. If he had been bringing me a coke instead of a beer or wine then I might have been annoyed. Warm, soft and very tempting bread arrived with a small set of humus and about 8 olives. Not going overboard on the quantity there but then they brought some more with the meal and looking on the bill later on, it was free after all. After a few minutes, justifiable since they appeared to be actually cooking the food in an open kitchen area rather than just heating it up, our starters arrived. Menu-boy got a tasty looking veggie cheese on a mound of mushrooms thing (Hellim?), while us Setcourse-boys got an edible set of greens with garlic (Maydanoz Salatasi?). Damning with faint praise maybe but actually it was just as well prepared and set out as when I've had it in other Turkish places - interesting but not startling. Then the main course arrived... Menu-boy had... something (Mentar apparently). To be honest I was too busy tearing into my lamb shish. Wonderfully cooked and still nicely sizzling hot on the inside which shows it came straight from the grill rather than loitering under a heatlamp. Gorgeous and slightly crispy on the outside, these big blocks of lamb were lovely. Served with cous-cous which was moist enough (dry cous-cous is a pet hate of mine) and a nice set of veggies. Finished up with some pistachio turkish delight cubes and left looking curiously at the nicely appointed bar area which we will have to try some evening after work. Despite the drink mix up, which is probably due to new staff, I liked this place. I may order off menu next time too... Matt

Just when I thought I found a Turkish restaurant that wasn't a Tas (the chain taking over London), turns out that this multi-function Turkish restaurant/bar/cafe is also part of Tas but going by a different name. Tried the deli food, though they were happy to order from the restaurant menu a tomato soup, as all they served in the deli was red lentil soup, which was very tasty. Tried an assortment of cold meze and it was generally good flavour and decent portions. Not overwhelmed by flavours here but the service is friendly, the ambience very chilled for a cafe-deli and its clean and fresh. They also sell Turkish oil, wine and sauces, snacks, cheese etc. Most with the Tas brand.

I've been here on three separate occasions and thus figured it was time to give the Hazev a write up. I do like the location as it does have plenty of indoor seating along with the entire bar which has an nice view of the wharf area. In the better months, there is also outside seating. The interior is nicely decorated, a little bit ecliptic but all in good taste. The seating however is perhaps a bit tight, especially when at full capacity to which point this place is very loud. Atmosphere rating = 4 stars I personally like the bar area as there is plenty of room to mill about and can accommodate large gatherings. Even when the bar area is packed, the bartenders do a good job at keep the drinks flowing. Bar rating = 4 stars We got the fixed menu where they bring out a bunch of starters all of which is Turkish, thus made up of dishes designed to be mopped up with bread. In my view the starters are really good and if not careful, they can end up being your meal due to overeating on the starters and being full when the main meal comes. I like the varied textures and temperatures of the starters and they go along very well as you converse with your friends. Starters rating = 5 stars For the main meal, I've now tried two different types of lamb and one chicken. The first lamb and chicken where variations of kabobs and in both cases I found the meat to be very dry and hugely disappointing. The other lamb meal came with plenty of sauce and sitting on top of some mushy stuff which... at least is was not dry this time but I found it very bland. Main meal rating = 1 star The waiters were friendly and helpful in terms of giving better descriptions of the menu, but boy were they slow. Now, I will admit the slow rate of which the food was coming to the table is partially due to the speed of the kitchen, but my God, there is no excuse for them to take 15 minutes to even start taking our drink orders... it was much quicker in going to the bar. Even bringing out the starters they were very slow in getting all of them out. When the main meal came, they also mixed up several of the orders as well. Wait staff rating = 2

The interior is quite spacious but have no idea what a previous reviewer was talking about regarding a cool interior; the AC wasn't working when we were there and it was humid and I had to ask for a door to be opened! Anyway I got the kisir, the imam biyaldi and we shared the cacik. The first was so tasty even my meat-eating friend was impressed. The portion is quite substantial as well. The aubergine in the imam biyaldi was tender and juicy and the combination of sauces and onions, tomatoes and peppers lent it a rich flavour. Again a large portion. Ditto for the shared cacik. The pita bread that accompanied the meal though was tasteless. I took leftovers home. My friend praised her lamb as well. We also enjoyed the Turkish port after. But my God why can't it figure out service?! I asked twice for our meals to b wrapped up and then twice more for a check and each time it was more important for the waiter to clear an empty table next to us (where there were plenty of empty tables and no customers waiting), and make another?! He then got to seating a group that came in and handed out menus. At that point I was so peeved - and more than 20 minutes had passed- I got up to go to the cashier. Thank gosh service wasn't included in the bill because I would have deducted it. I might come back here just for takeaway but not to sit in again. Shame it doesn't deliver.

Saving half my meal in a takeaway box, we left the table and I looked back from a few meters to see the table cleaner swoop in in a few seconds. I ordered the simple lamb shish, my girlfriend the iskinder kebab (lamb baked in a tagine with yoghurt). For starters we shared hummus and fried white bait. The white bait was excellent with a real fresh zing, the hummus lovely and rich with the free bread and olives served with your meal. The lamb was delicious in both the mains and they were very generous portions - we had to ask for a doggy bag to take home. If I was to be very picky, I would have preferred the pitta bread to be a little less 'toasty'. I like the warmed breads from Turkish restaurants which have been grilled with the fat of the meats! We didn't need a reservation for a Saturday night when we arrived before 8pm. Though it was very full all evening. I would definitely return.
