Omg I didn't expect this place to be so nice! The waitress is an absolute delight, I had the best minestrone soup EVER, and I'm not a fan of it usually, I only go it because it is cold out. I grew up eating this pizza. They were awesome and was always a family favorite here in Noe Valley. In fact, my family has been going to Haystack since the 70s. BUT I think within the past 3 years the service just went downhill. They don't provide coupons anymore, even to the local neighborhood. Their prices have really gone up and they have been taking extra long to deliver their pizzas even though we are literally 5 blocks away. Today they are taking almost 2 hours to deliver a pizza. Haystack was our neighborhood go-to pizza place growing up. I mean, before I learned how to drive and opted for Milano's or Pasquale's. But whenever I'm visiting the folks, they will still order from here since it's just a few blocks away. I always remembered it as just being okay. Our default toppings are always pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom. Haystack's sausage is unique, but everything else was just average. Flash forward to present day. This month we've ordered from them twice and I gotta say, something's changed. And for the better! I'm not sure if it's the sauce or the dough. Maybe it's the dough. It definitely seems different. Fluffier. Well, whatever it is, both times we got takeout and both times I ate 3 or 4 slices when I usually limit myself to 2 max. And it's not that I wasn't thouroughly full after 2 slices. It just tasted really good and my mouth kept begging me to keep the good times rolling. And it wasn't just me that noticed a difference. We all did. I think the consensus is that the dough is different. Well, whatever it is, kudos Haystack for improving your pizza. Coming from a person that LOVES pizza and spends a lot of time in Noe Valley, that's a job well done! read more

Sometimes you're just in the mood for an old-school pizza joint. You want booths that are clean but poorly patched with duct tape. You want waiters who look like they've been here for decades. You want a beer selection not much more complex than "draught or bottle". Appetizers that blow your diet. This place does the trick. Everything is very classic old-school pizzaria. Nothing too fancy, nothing too unique. Just the same pizza shop experience that every generation has enjoyed since Italians became Italian Americans and set up this little slice of Norman Rockwell Americana. Fried calamari were delicious; though next time I'd ask for marinara sauce (which I'm sure they have) instead of tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. The pizza was a homerun. Not gourmet, just awesome. I really like haystack! Not sure why they only have 3 reviews! We had garlic chicken, onions and mushrooms on our pizza and it was delicious!! Service is very nice and parking isn't so bad as you far usually find some parking in the homes around the block. Nice bars and lounges nearby should you want to grab an after dinner drink. read more

My family's experience here was terrible. Upon being seated no one was up front. When we finally saw someone who appeared the manager he seemed to have an attitude. The waiter gave everyone else bread and oil. We had to ask for ours and he brought stale bread with just butter. We ordered the old mcdonald which was supposed to have chicken on it but there was barely any. Our pizza was basically a vegetarian pizza with too much mushroom and tomato. Pizza arrived within 45 minutes on a Friday, so that wasn't bad. When I took a bite of it, though, it was burnt quite badly and tasted terrible. For some reason, I also ordered fried zucchini and it arrived swimming in grease and a little overcooked as well. A quick call back got apologies and the offer to refund or send out another. Wow! The doorbell rang & it was the pizza delivery guy. And voila! A piping hot pizza (yes hot) arrived from Haystack. The best pizza there is the simple New York. It tastes just like an honest to goodness New York slice, the delicious kind that you fold & eat. The crust is thin and crispy, the sauce sublime. The cheese is perfect, and the herbs add a subtle flavor. But back to the sauce--it's so good. At $13.50 for a medium pie, this beats pretentious Una Pizza Napolitana by a mile. Sure, UPN is good--but it's twenty-five bucks & Zero Zero is less expensive & just as good. Plus Zero won't shame you for asking for chili pepper flakes. (That's right folks--Una Pizza Pretenciosa doesn't ALLOW any condiments except salt. And I've had pizza in Napoli, & it doesn't cost $25.) Haystack's NY pizza is the like Napoli's spunky cousin. It looks different, tastes different --but she's just as tasty. Dining in is like stepping back to the Mad Men 60s. Sit with your pals in the back room, and order a a carafe of Burgundy (yes, Burgundy--I told you, it's old school;) & a plate of antipasti. Well, I have been waiting on this review. I do kinda rely on Yelp for trying new places... That said... It was New Years Eve. My dinning partner and myself were looking for a good pizza. NOT just a slice, but a whole pie. We decided on hitting up Noe Valley. It had been awhile since I strolled up and down 24th Street, so we popped into Haystack. I know, I know... Maybe New Years Eve isn't the best time to give my two cents, but the place wasn't that busy. (hmmm, maybe a bad sign) We stood at the door for a few minutes, then went up to the bar and explained that we wanted to eat. We were seated fairly quickly then... Again, they weren't busy. (The SFPD were being treated pretty good though) About 15 minutes later, we flagged down a server. She said she was sorry. "No big woop" we say, as we are pretty hungry at this point (feed me, it's already 7:00 p.m.) The pizza arrived fairly quickly though. At this point, I figured I could eat anything.... No bueno! We ordered from Haystack Pizza while staying in Noe Valley. We used GrubHub and our pizza came quickly and tasted delicious! I especially appreciated that they weren't skimpy with the toppings. Don't you hate it when you order a mushroom pizza and you have exactly 9 mushroom slices on the entire pizza? Not at Haystack, they loaded it up! One of my absolute favorite restaurants in the city. Love the Ranch Chicken Sandwich, the Chicken Cordon Bleu is fantastic as are their pizzas and calzones. Whether ordering for delivery or eating in the folks at Haystack always give great customer service; they are sweet and helpful. Reminds me of pizza/pasta places back east where they serve delicious food from recipes that have existed for ages and you are treated like family when you arrive. I love this city for is unique and interesting foods, but when I want guarantee that I will enjoy every part of my meal, Haystack is always my top choice. read more

I come here after often after a night of drinking on 24th. So I'm usually pretty shit faced while stuffing said face with a personal pizza (sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, jalapeños) and chicken wings (no sauce needed). Perfect food to soak up all that booze. Staff is very friendly and there's hardly any turnover, so the faces are friendly and familiar. Also, sometimes when I'm hungover on a Sunday, I'll fuckin order a cheeseburger and fries for delivery. This is no-nonsence delicious Italian food It can get busy and noisy at times but when I'm craving Italian at 11:45 in the evenings, this where I come to pick up a phoned in order, whether it's a personal pizza or a full-on Pasta dish. This restaurant survives for so long by being consistent. If you have eaten here many times for many years, you will sometimes get something unsatisfactory, but those bum dishes are far outweighed by so many of their consistently great meals! This is one of our most prized possessions living in Noe Valley. If you choose to sit down for lunch or dinner, you will be surrounded by a safe yet funky atmosphere. This place gets 3 stars but that is a sum of very extreme ratings on a variety of topics. 4-5 stars: Value of italian dishes, especially the tortellini or anything eggplant. We never come home hungry. The meats in dishes and on pizza is usually good. Open pretty late. Great location. Sauce on pasta can be awesome sometimes, especially if you like thicker sauce. Speed of food coming out often is faster than the wait staff can bring it, and that is not due to just being microwaved. 1-2 stars: Freshness of salad, pizza quality at times, slowness of wait staff at times (at best a 3 hence why we sit at the counter), wine selection not as big as most italian/pizza places in bay area. Definitely a solid option when used strategically as in certain items are extremely good value for San Francisco. read more

It has been a while since I've ordered from Haystack Pizza and I've always ordered the fettuccine a la haystack and was always disappointed so I took a chance and ordered. OMG!!!! The roast chicken was tender and moist, the Alfredo sauce was so creamy and so flavorful!! Whoever was the Chef that day... he/she is a keeper. Actually everything that I ordered was delicious!! I was actually gonna hold off on writing this, but after reading the most recent posts, this restaurant needs a serious wake up review. Now, I could go on for sentences talking about how awesome this place USED to be, or how the decor is outdated, blah blah blah. I honestly don't give a rats about minor things like that. No Haystack, let me tell you about what I expected from you this particular evening, and what I received instead. I had an awesome walking trip with my family, from Glen Park, all the way up Diamond Heights, back down through Noe Valley, and finally making it to 24th. We were tired, we were hungry. And I personally had a young child who was very whinny after the long walk. We went to the first pizza place nearest to us, and had lame service there (check my last review), then left to find a better place. That's when my GF tells me, "Let's go to Haystack!", and a rush of feel good memories hits me. Some of our best dates were at this place. The last time we walked the same route with my family, we ended up here and had a blast. So I was DOWN to eat there. Enough beating around the bush, let me tell you WHERE YOU JACKED UP(please DON'T excuse my french, because Yelp's guidelines won't allow me to swear). When our FIRST pizza came, it was a size smaller than what we ordered, plus had the wrong toppings. Hey, no big deal, just flag down the waiter, have him take it back, right? Or, it would be right, if the bushy haired server didn't make a face like we're stupid. Didn't even apologize. Dude, in the food industry, I don't care if you didn't even look at the food, you apologize even if its not your fault. Unspoken rule. Period. Our waitress comes by, shows us the ticket to prove it wasn't her fault. That's cool, kinda unnecessary, but that's cool. SECOND pizza comes. Got the right toppings, YAY. Still the wrong size. Of course we have no choice but to call back the wonderful guy who served it to us, he makes an exasperated sigh (pft, like we WANTED to talk you). So we let him know it a size too small, and that we ordered a medium. What does he say? "That is a medium" Wow. You work with pizza. All day. Errday. And we're having size issues? I had to check him with what his menu says, 10 slices for medium. 8 for a small. What statement does he counter with? "Look man, I don't slice the pizzas, I just serve them." That statement speaks for itself of how bad your restaurant sucks. I was so ready to go, but I couldn't, since my fussy child was ready to snap without some pizza. Our waitress comes back, tries to mitigate the situation, halfway through the conversation, server dude comes back with the right one, explains how he got it mixed up. Still no apology, at all, and this time it actually was his fault. Fine, whatever. You know, with that attitude, how am I supposed to feel about what happened to the pizza in the back while you were with it...exactly, right? The readers get me. Then, our waitress decides to throw us the whole "let me get you something comp'd" line. Again wasn't necessary, but she offered free desserts. Cool. After we were done with our meal, she was nowhere to be found. What a surprise. Made an empty promise. Like the empty promise your restaurant is. Now, the main thing that reeeeeally grinded my gears was the server. Look, man, you were walking around with a nasty scowl on your face. Do you hate your job? If so, why are you still there? I don't know if this is you everyday, but going off of my experience with you, you don't belong in the restaurant biz. You suck, man. Go find a better profession, and stop making people have bad experiences there, you obviously aren't down for the cause. I say this not as a yelper, but as a human being. Go find your place in this world, a pizza shop is most def not it. As for the restaurant in its entirety, I don't think you should care about whether or not I actually come back. What I really think you should be thinking about is how many bad reviews is it gonna take before you guys realize you suck? Oh yeah the pizza was ok. I check back in a year or two from now, just to see if you guys are still around and convert on the multiple feedback. Hopefully bushy haired angry server won't be there ;) read more

I emerged from my office Friday night at 6:00, the earliest I had left the office since....well, probably February. I wish I was joking when I said that. When I left the office, I had a standing appointment to return the next morning at 9:30, bright and early, to spend another weekend feeding the monster. By Friday at midnight, after an 18-month wrestling match, the monster appeared defeated or placated. Take your pick. Result's the same, either way. Saturday came and it was almost too breathtaking beautiful to actually enjoy or believe. Perfection whispers illusion in this day and age, and I spent the whole day walking on eggshells, expecting a call that would drag me back to the office, never to return. By Sunday, my frayed nerves relaxed just enough to allow me to climb the vast hill to the summit of Noe Valley, and then to collapse in a booth at Haystack Pizza and proceed to eat and drink. I cannot comment on their sandwiches or pasta, for Wifey and I split a small pepperoni, sausage, olive, and onion pizza, and it was fantastic. The service was friendly and attentive, the setting was quaint without being too over-the-top, and the price was nothing to complain about. But what now for our hero? [Or, at least, for me?] Will he be summoned back to the cave of eternal struggle, therein to waste the remainder of his summer in the battle of the stupid versus the evil? Will he once again disappear from Yelp, with nary a fan or friend to notice or miss him? Will he discover The Penguin's evil plot in time? I was craving some "Italian" food today so I fired up the ol' Eat24. I used to order from Haystack back in 2010 and don't remember it being so: 1. Expensive 2. Shitty. I ordered the chicken parm with spaghetti and alfredo sauce. It came out to almost $19 with tax before tip. The spaghetti was flavorless and congealed into a giant white clump the second it got cold. The chicken was dry as hell, the sauce tasted like something out of a jar, and the cheese tasted like cardboard. I know I know, I shouldn't have expected much but dang, for $19 I expected a little more. 1 star because my fat kid Italian food craving has been satisfied for at least another four months. 2 stars for the sweet lady working the counter. read more

Had a yummy pizza from here on Sunday. We ordered takeout using their online system and had some issues - better to just call in your order if it's same day. The pizza itself was very good and I'll order it again. Only complaint is the crust was a little plain. We built our own pizza - a medium with pepperoni, mushrooms, and jalapeños (they were pickled, not fresh). It wasn't New York Style or Neapolitan style, but was more along the lines of Papa John's or Dominoes (but better). The pizza was just shy of $24. A little steep, considering it was just a pizza - but I know Noe Valley rent so they're probably just trying to pay the bills. The medium easily serves 4 people who eat a normal amount. read more
