I signed back into Yelp after many years of not Yelping just to write this review. It's a bit of a story (and a long, personal one), so bear with me (or just look above to the five star rating and call Rachael!).
I believe there are two types of people in this world, those that eat to live, and those that live to eat. I am the latter. Food is essentially the only thing that I'm thinking about all day, any day. I plan my life around my meals, and not the reverse. But, after a bad stomach bug years ago my gut never fully recovered and I was suffering in a major way - to the point where every meal brought me stress and discomfort. I went to a GI doctor and another and another and ultimately it was determined that I had SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and that was the cause of many of my symptoms. For me, it was not a life threatening condition, but more of a frustrating nuisance that interfered with my work, my health, my happiness and yes, my eating.
To treat it, one doctor recommended a 10-week course of 2 different antibiotics which would fully wipe the bacteria from my small intestine. I'm wary of antibiotics, especially when it comes to my already sensitive gut - so I asked for alternatives. He said I could try the "low fodmap diet" (http://www.ibsdiets.org/fodmap-diet/fodmap-food-list/) which essentially would starve out the bacteria and hopefully restore the gut. This frankly sounded a bit quackish to me at first, so I went to another doctor who suggested the same diet if I wasn't willing to try the antibiotics just yet. So I figured I'd give it a go as a last resort before going on a big course of medicine.
Turns out the low fodmap diet is a huge pain. No lactose, no gluten (my lifeblood), no garlic, no onions (which are both in everything, btw), no sugar, or sweeteners no avocados (da fuq?) no beans, no peas, no honey, no grapefruit, you get the idea. It was HIGHLY restrictive. But alas, I persisted, and tried to make myself food. Two weeks in, I ended up hungry, exhausted and even more frustrated than before. It was bad enough having a sh*tty gut (pun intended) - but now the one thing that I actually enjoy (eating heartily) was destroyed. So I turned to the one friend we all turn to when times are tough: google.
And after a little bit of searching, there it was: The Cupboard! I was immediately drawn into Rachael's website and what sounded like genuine passion for cooking and helping people live their best and healthy lives. The website was beautiful and so I sent her an email and hoped that her food had the same level of care as her webpage. I explained my awkward condition in the email and asked if she was game to tackle this annoying food challenge - and thankfully she was!
We got started shortly thereafter, I signed up for the BusyBee lunch and the two bulk dinners. I wish I were exaggerating, but working with Rachael changed my life. Her food is creative, fresh and a delight with every bite. I get excited every time she e-mails over a menu or drops off a delivery with perfect packaging and a specially printed menu - the level of care and thought that she puts into meal planning and her entire business is incredible. She makes awesome dips and snacks, incredible salads and some of the best dressings I've ever had. She somehow perfectly cooks meat every time. She makes me love food that I didn't even know I liked and probably wouldn't order (walnut basil crusted salmon, who knew?).
The food is so good that I completely forgot that I was on a freakish diet and the weeks passed by quickly and easily as I found myself back in love with food and feeling energetic, healthy and happy again. And despite never feeling hungry, I actually lost 8 pounds (which is a huge bonus when you're in your 30's). I stuck to the fodmap program for about 6 weeks as the doctor recommended, before going on a vacation where I found myself oddly *missing* her food while I was away.
It's now been about five months of working together and I'm back on a normal person's diet now (gimme that cheese!!), but the weight has stayed off and my symptoms are still thankfully gone. Throughout the entire time of working together Rachael has been compassionate, thoughtful, communicative, and truly a kind and generous-hearted person. I hope that more people can find the joy that I do in working with her. read more
