Love the pizza!! The pies are pretty large and thick. The toppings are plentiful. It's fresh, not greasy. They are consistently good. I've taken lots of out of town guests here. It's a relatively small place. I always try to sit in the front of the restaurant, as the large groups of kids/families are usually seated in the back area where they have more room. I've ordered take-out from Haystack for the almost 20 years I've lived in Noe Valley. I love their pizzas - the Haystack Special, the Zorba; also a combo of pepperoni, linguica, mushroom and onion that they make for me which is delicious. My friends have all loved it also when we've had it together. It's a family owned restaurant with a nice neighborhood charm - the owner and the servers are mostly family members and their friends. It seems like some folks that have eaten there haven't gotten great service, but I can say that the pizza have ordered for many years has almost always been tasty and worth it (and I've tried many kinds of pizza.) Have been eating here occasionally for over 30 years. The quality of the entrees and service have definitely gone downhill -- while the prices have risen disproportionately. I still like the pizza with that thick, doughy, yeasty crust and the generous iceburg lettuce and canned beans salad with fresh, chunky (made in-house?) blue cheese dressing. This is 1970's comfort food at 2011 prices. They used to serve hearty, acceptably-priced lamb chops, chicken parmigiana, and spaghetti with meatballs, always enough for leftovers, but no more. It's been nearly empty for the last few years whenever I've been in. Haystack's Hayday is ovah. I love pizza. If pizza was "good for you" I would eat it every day. Unfortunattely, it is not at all "good for you" and therefore I do not eat it very often. So, when I DO order pizza, its a bit of an event. Despite the glowing reviews, I was NOT very happy with this pizza. It took over an hour and there was practically no sauce. The topping were good but crust was chewy and we didn't eat what didn't have toppings on it. The crust made the leftovers nearly impossible to eat. Maybe it would have been better with extra sauce? On a recent visit to SF, my husband and I decided to explore a part of the city that we had never been to. Our son lives in SF and is always bringing us to these yuppie, overcrowded, over raved about restaurants. Many of them have had very tasty food but that trendy scene gets old and expensive. As we made our way up 24th we saw this little Italian place, Haystack Pizza. It reminded us of an old school Italian place so we decided to try it. It was a Monday at 1pm and there were only a few couples in there eating. We ordered pizza and a salad. We LOVE the pizza. The sauce is perfection. We didn't get the thin crust (didn't even know they had it until I read the reviews); it was on the thicker side but not too thick and baked to perfection. A size small was big enough for both of us and we even had a piece left over. Our salads were just okay. I would actually give the pizza 5 stars but because I haven't tried anything else on the menu I hesitate to give the whole place that much love. Ambiance is old school. Don't expect to be impressed with the decor. But if you want a good pie at decent prices...this is the place. read more

The Pizza here is good. For the Noe Valley area it seems like a really boring restaurant. They do serve Italian food which doesn't seem to be what they really want to sell. This place is pretty solid. The veggie pizza was a little soggy in the middle, and it tore apart when I picked my first piece (and every piece thereafter). Other than that the pizza tasted pretty good and the customer service was good while we waited. They let us order a pizza for pick up 15 minutes before they closed. They're one of the only restaurants in Noe Valley open past 10:00, so it's great for a nighttime pizza emergency. read more

I wish I could give them a 6 star rating. The service was above and beyond from the moment I walked in with my wife and kids. Our host was great a young man D. He did something most places dont when I asked for waters he brought my son and daughter child cups plus crayons and paper. Our waiter was a very nice man and made nice conversation with us we felt at home in this place. A man whom I believe to be the owner or manager with a mustach was excellent with his customer service and took pride in the resturant as we waited for our food the pizza #10 which was breath taking. He went out side to sweep the street and the resturant you don't see owners or managers do that much. He was a class act and this will now be our familys pizza/pasta resturant for years to come. GREAT pizza, especially with the whole wheat crust. I like the topping selection, though they could have some more authentic italian toppings like proscutto and pancetta. I don't know how the delivery service is, since I am just a couple blocks away. This place totally exceeded my expectations. Was expecting an old school, minimal option pizza joint, and while it was old school, I was very impressed with the customization. Plenty of veggies to choose from, and the mini size was just right not to feel like you're overdoing it, but still filling when partnered with a salad. Never tried eating in their restaurant but my uncles would always have their pepperoni pizza delivered at least once a week and I don't understand what exactly they find appealing in Haystack pizza. The crust is too thick, the topping is way too salty as in waaaaaaay too salty and it's just too greasy for me. I have loved Haystack for years because they make pizza the way I like it:) They know what extra thick crust means, and their sauce is sweet and delicious, not bitter and overwhelming like other pizza restaurants. The ingredients are always fresh and plentiful, plus you can add extra for just a little more. There was a delay with delivery, but after having a nice conversation with the manager they are back on track and better than ever. Thank you Haystack for listening and then delivering your best!! Haystack has been our go-too pizza delivery option in Noe Valley for the past 10 years+. I'd guess we've placed 200 or so orders. Their standard crust isn't too thick, isn't too thin... nice, normal non-"New York style" midwestern pizza. If you grew up on classic midwestern style pizza (Dominos, Little Caesars) Haystack is a much appreciated upgrade in the same style. read more

I had a pretty bad experience. Service took forever and when we went in to see how much longer it would take (after waiting for 45 minutes) we saw the food just sitting on the counter next to the waitress. It took about 25 minutes for them to bring out the bread and butter and a salad that we had ordered which was basically two hearts of romaine with sliced tomatoes and mozzarella on top. Nothing special... we had also ordered the lamb chops and while they do come with four, they are extremely small. After everything is all said and done it was definitely not worth the money that we spent. Which was roughly $50 for three plates. Don't recommend, save your money. read more

Spent dozens of nice evenings in Haystack in the Days of Yore when the Noe Valley's 24th Street BUSTLED on a Saturday night. Here's my impression of what we had Saturday night at Haystack. The "mini salad" really, really sucks, resembling hospital cafeteria "salads." It had beets and stringed beans that were terrible. And other God-awful-tasting "greens" that tasted like they'd been sitting around a few hours. They deserved to be sent back. Didn't like the dressing either. Cost-cutting for razor thin margins must have really taken a toll on Haystack's "French bread," a sort of sour dough substitute, that had tasteless, soft crust, an equally bad, textureless, inner dough, and looked and smelled terrible w. a faded, insipid color. My girl, a lover of French bread, decided not to even taste it, based on the bread's unappetizing looks. God only knows what bakery ships their bread, and how many days it's in the back of the truck, but I'm hoping their pizza crusts are better. The fettucini carbonara was very good and the portion healthy. Grated black pepper on it would have nearly completed the "fettucini experience." The substandard waitress was reluctant to take our order but ended up somewhat friendly, though she forgot our water. Using her words, they were "underhanded" that night, though the place looked nearly half empty (which, at 9 pm on a Saturday night, is probably testimony to Haystack's quality). Gave 15% though only because it's a tough job. She did not deserve even this lousy tip. Greek Feta burger was pretty mediocre and came with stale tomato. OK, late August California tomatoes may sometimes not be the best, but let's please stop tossing canned veggies on top of salads. The Feta and garlic were good, but the bottom of half of the bun came soggy enough that you couldn't hold the burger. Burger King's sesame burger buns would beat this by miles. Fries OK. The house white and red was barely adequate. When time came for coffee, dessert, or a drink, we declined. Some flan and coffee or brandy would have been nice to have while looking at some pretty paintings on the walls in the back dining room. Provided they fix their sunken-in seats so that you're not sitting so low, and at an uncomfortable tilt. The only thing this place may have going for it is the man who appeared to be the owner -- a very nice, warm -spirited, middle-aged, gentleman in a pullover sweater and white shirt. But I'm looking at the 3 out of 5 stars of the other reviews here. We won't be back any time soon. The pizza place across the street is more of a restaurant, and the food's better. Yuppification took out a major portion of the Noe Valley. Herb's, a great breakfast cafe, the Acme Cafe, and Spinelli's coffee -- who had staff that wentto Coffee School, and had cafe that'd have you Walking The Wires, my brother. Last stalwart bastions: News on 24, which survived a horrific but nice past owner and offers an eclectic selection; Noe Valley Music, which has survived a mean guitar maker (of oh, so, cool-looking guitars) and unprofessional guitar teachers; one or two great used book stores. Alas you're more apt to run into tony Cisco execs than you are, say, an artist. Well, we didn't find pubes in the food like Yelp reviewer Kathy W. says she did. Or have my credit card charged twice for a pizza that never came like Kati K. But......... read more

Just arrived back home from our first trip to Haystack & we were really impressed. The atmosphere was nice and casual/comforable, service was excellent & so was the food. We ordered a large Haystack combo pizza - it was one of the best pizza's I've had in a while and the whole table agreed. Just the right amount of cheese and toppings, toppings were very fresh, sauce was excellent and tasty, just moist enough and perfectly cooked. We ordered the house salads first and they were pricey at 5.50, but large enough to keep us choming until the pizza arrived - all in all a very pleasant suprise tonight - we will be back. read more

We've given this place three chances (a lot for an SF eatery) and they always fail to do a good job (both in timely service and quality of pizza). Tonight, they took 1.5 hours to deliver our pizza! I would have to say...mmm meh? We ordered delivery on a Friday night and it got to our home in 45 min-which was quite good...but the pizza was nothing really worth raving over. We ordered 3 personal pizzas: cheese (this one was the best as you really can't go wrong), bbq chicken (no thank you and won't order again..peeled chicken and really quite bland) and a chicken and onion (again, actually bland-despite the onion). Haystack pizza is one of my all time favorite pizza places in San Francisco! I am obsessed with the "Popeye" pizza on thin whole-wheat crust because it is so different from the more "traditional" pizza varieties. The servers here are always so friendly and attentive, checking in frequently throughout the dining experience. Their calzones are amazingly delicious too but if you order one, make sure you brought more people along with you to share it because even the "small" calzone is MASSIVE! Overall, Haystack pizza has great quality and generously-portioned food that comes with reasonable prices. You will never leave hungry or dissapointed with any part of your experience. read more
