Loved my haircut!! I called and scheduled an appointment with Jenny for a haircut. There's plenty of parking and the cute Tiffany blue sign makes it easy to find! Jenny is so sweet and made great recommendations for my hair and I love the way it turned out. Also, the shampoo was the best head rub I've ever had. Definitely bring cash because it's much cheaper that way! Also, Jenny works 7 days/week and in the mornings so if you want to see her, schedule it in the morning any day! I made an appointment a week in advance to get an inch of split ends removed and some facial framing layers. My appointment was very easy to make by phone and there was parking on the lower level downstairs. I texted Hana to say I would be 10 minutes late but she said no problem. When I got there, the salon was very cute with the light blue door. I told her I just needed to refresh and get rid of the split ends that were due to all my at home color treatments. I'm currently letting the color fade so I can update the highlights soon. Just by removing the split ends, my hair feels healthier and lighter but I still was able to keep the length which I wanted. Hana was very nice and ensured that I was happy with my results before I left. Price was reasonable and my mom wants to make an appointment now for her haircut too. read more

I made a personal vow to follow Jenny wherever she goes, so when she decided to open her own salon I almost cried (for joy). Nowadays I get lash perms from her regularly because she does it just the way I like it--the right curvature and she spreads out the lashes super evenly so it doesn't flip weird ways as it grows. This new salon space is so cute, more roomy, and parking is easy--right downstairs. The location is perfect for me. And I like not having to inhale nail salon toxic chemicals as I enter. LOL If Jenny started doing lashes in a dark alley, I'd probably follow her there, too. But since she's opened this uber stylish, convenient, comfortable space, I'm stoked to keep my vow by visiting her regularly (maybe more) at Hawaii Kai 101 Salon!!!! Also I just realized it's been 5 years since she did my permanent eyebrows and I'm in love with them now just as much as I was back then--the shape is perfect and I haven't even had to do a retouch yet! --------------------this was my original 2012 review after Jenny did my eyebrow tattoo and lash extensions: I got eyebrow tattoos and lash extensions from Jenny, who works in June's salon....and I couldn't be happier! I have 3 young kids and NO time in the morning for any make-up, so I'd been wanting eyebrow tattoos for so long...finally took the leap, despite my fears of looking like Groucho Marks or it hurting too bad. Neither was the case. Jenny is so super gentle, she talks you through the whole process, she listens to what you want and really HEARS you out. She puts numbing cream all throughout, so there was no pain. Seriously, it felt like she was just tickling the hairs on my brow--I didn't even realize when she actually started. I LOVE the shape and color of my brows. And she's REALLY good at the lash extensions. She just is. It's just the right length and curl. Not too long--very natural. Now I can surf, swim, workout, and not have to worry about coming out brow-less! :) :) I already have the eyeliner from back in the 90's...boy has technology changed. The pigments are better and the tools are much better. The only thing that is a drag about the eyebrows is that they are super duper dark the first week, until they form scabs and fall off. Then they are like 50% lighter. In the mean time, you have to wear a cap and sunglasses. At least I did. ;) --------------------and this was my 2015 review of Jenny's lash perm: Jenny gave me an eyelash perm on Oct. 31, 2014. I am not kidding you, today is January 9, 2015, and my normally straight as an arrow lashes are STILL curled up to my eyebrows! That is literally 2-1/2 months, or almost 10 weeks of not having to use my eyelash curler even once. OMG--I never thought I'd be able to say that! I am usually curling my lashes once or twice a day if they get wet and I need to redo my makeup. It has been totally liberating not to have to even think about my lashes. I just add a little mascara to the tips and I'm good to go. The process was quick and easy--especially compared to lash extensions. I love the look of lash extensions, but it didn't work with my lifestyle. I like to swim, surf, rub my eyes if I have to, scrub my eye make-up off when washing my face. So though I REALLY enjoyed having lash extensions for a while, it just wasn't practical for me long-term. I'll do it for special occasions like for the holidays though. The lash perm, on the other hand, I'm convinced I will keep up for the rest of my life here on earth. Or as long as I'm in this Asian body whose hair lacks any curl whatsoever. With the lash perm I can jump in the ocean, wipe my face without worrying about my lashes, shoot the showerhead straight into my face without a care, and come out of the water knowing my lashes look just as good as when I went in! LOVE. I wasn't surprised that Jenny did the lash perm with the same precision, professionalism and perfectionism with which she did my original lash extensions. The girl is good. She is damn good. She is just so meticulous and careful, gentle and calm. I'm convinced that's why my lashes have held the curl this long. Jenny talked to me when I felt like talking and let me lay there and relax when I didn't feel like talking. That to me is a super important quality for anyone working in a salon. Be sensitive and aware of when your client feels like talking and when she just wants to sit/lay and relax in the quietness of her own thoughts! I love that about Jenny. She just knows. I'm throwing out my eyelash curler because too often it's cut my lashes in half or pulled them out and left gaping holes in my lashline. Yikes. For the lash perm, I was in and out of J Salon in exactly an hour. But only like 15 minutes of that is applying the permanent solution. The rest of the time you're waiting for it to set. So it's really a relaxing process--I fell asleep! Good naptime. :) It's easy, quick, works with my lifestyle. So I'm coming back when this current perm wears out, if it ever does. read more

I haven't colored my hair in over 12 years from past trauma due to a really bad color job from another salon. She even told me to come back if my hair wasn't the color I wanted. To be honest took a little getting used to since my hair has been so dark for so long but I honestly love it! Everyone has complimented me on your hair and asked me who did it! A hidden GEM for eyelashes! Being Asian and not having the fullest lashes it is hard to find an eyelash extension place that works with what I have to maximize it 500x. You need to trust her recommendations. Jenny does an amazing and meticulous job, taking her time to make you look gorgeous. Jenny is personable, professional, cute and strives for perfection. When she works on my lashes, she treats my lashes with such care, passion and excellence. Her work lasts 2x longer than any other place I have been to and worth every $!! Unfortunately I live in Mililani and this place is in Hawaii Kai but to me, it's worth it! When you first walk in it is a hair salon but Jenny has her own private room in the back of the salon. I have been going to Jenny for eyelash extensions for over 2 years now and I am addicted. She does a truly amazing job at making the eyelashes look fabulous, but not fake. I love going to her because it gives me an excuse to lay down with my headphones on for a whole hour and a half without getting interrupted by phone calls or a crying baby ;). Jenny is amazing! I had my lashes done about 4 weeks ago and they are still holding up. Jenny was trained in Korea and is a master at making lash extensions look extremely natural. She is also so meticulous and gentle during the whole process that you will never feel a pinch or pull during the entire process. After my lashes were done, Jenny mentioned that she also does eye liner tattooing. Although the idea of a needle so close to my eye terrifies me, Jenny is such a perfectionist that I am considering going back to her for the eye liner tattoo. Jenny is also very kind, patient, and personable. The first time I met Jenny I felt like I had known her forever. She gave me an early Christmas present, which was a kit to make my lashes grow thicker so that she could add more lash extensions the next time. I must say my review will be different than all the other five-star reviews. I have a home in Hawaii Kai and I also spend quite a bit of time in Shanghai. Due to the coronavirus outbreak I am staying in Honolulu longer than anticipated. This is my first time getting eyelash extensions done locally and since Hawai'i Kai 101 Salon is just down the street and the reviews are outstanding I stopped by. Unfortunately the results are not exceptional. The lashes start to fall the next day and the rest started to go every which direction. I struggled whether to say something and when I did I was surprised and disappointed. I was told the poor job could be rectified by paying another $55. If I want to switch to the owner I will have to pay the full amount. Reason: the employee who did my lashes did not belong to the owner of Hawai'i Kai 101 Salon. Instead she is an independent contractor. I have been doing my eyelash extensions for over a decade and never before have I been displeased. Customer satisfaction is not at the core of this salon. Unless you are already a loyal customer of the owner I would highly recommend new comers to go elsewhere. It is not so much the job was not done well but the service was incredibly under par. read more
