I tried their passionfruit and their sea buckthorn, and both were great sorbets (sweet but still a little tart) and perfect on a hot day of exploring Montreal. Every market's gotta have an ice cream stall. On a summer day at the market, I was most looking for a stop at this place. At first, I was a little concerned about dairy but yay, they have vegan sorbets and there's a great selection of flavours! So many that I didn't know what to choose. I was tempted by a combination of exotic fruits. Then I noticed some unusual flavours such as corossol (soursop) and lulo (naranjilla). We tried the pink grapefruit and something with maple syrup (because it's sugar season), and both tasted like fresh fruit juice! Since it's only mid-April, the market is still quiet, so we had the only table all to ourselves while enjoying the very fine sorbet. The girl at the counter was very friendly too. It's definitely good ice cream, but nothing to go out of your way for, and it's cash only. This is located in the food hall/farmers market which in itself is a nice visit and if a local, I'm sure an awesome spot to have nearby. It's serving up creamy rich ice cream/gelato with some sorbet options. On the day I visited flavors were pretty standard and out of the 3 or 4 samples I tried, flavors were very nuanced and subtle. I can't quite remember as this was a few weeks back now, but nothing too memorable. Not the cheapest ice cream, either. Normally I don't like macaroons so the fact that I kept buying one after the other here tells me that this place is AMAZING!! they have ice cream inside the macaroons which is what drew me in the first place. They had coconut, mango, espresso, caramel, etc. I think the lady was laughing not at my French, but at the fact that I would buy one, turn around eat it, and then buy another one. Stumbled upon this place over the weekend whilst exploring the Jean Talon Market. I was casually passing-by checking out the vendors when I caught a waft of warm sweet sugary goodness which stopped me in my tracks. Standing outside Havre-aux-Glaces, I could see the mouth-watering waffle cones being freshly prepared. That did it for me, I had to get one of my own! Being a weekend, the queue was quite lengthy but I didn't mind as it gave me time to decide on what to have! From Masala Chai to Maple Crème Brulee, Mango to Pink Grapefruit, we were spoilt for choice on authenticity and uniqueness! I decided to keep it simple (as it was close to breakfast time) and opted for a Cranberry & Raspberry Sorbet in their homemade waffle cone. It cost around 5$ which was a little on the steeper side, but after tasting, WOW it definitely is worth it! The flavour was divine and very fresh - you can actually taste real fruit! I could sense that adrenaline rush in me when it comes to candied stuff and asking myself if I should get a scoop at 9am seems unwarranted. Desserts in any form always make my day, I am not a real sweet toothed but when u are away from home for an extended period of time and missed some of that comforting food, u just need something to get yourself connected and feel good. And ice cream is the easiest and cheapest means to get me excited and happy and especially when that the ice creams are laced with maple syrup - 2 maple flavored ones are waving at me from afar! Obviously there wasn't any crowd on a Friday morning when I patronized. I asked for a sample on the 2 maple ice cream and when I couldn't decide which one to get, the lady offer a mix of both even for a petite cup (the mini in the cup range). Smooth, creamy and intense, the Caramel & Maple ice cream swept me off my feet. Instantly, I revealed a broad smile! I know this is a notch sweeter than the ones I had at Maple Delights, but the latter don't partner up caramel with maple in their store. This one at Havres-aux-Glaces has a robust burnt sugar taste with a harmonious maple scent, clean and without a trace of off-flavor. Lovely. The she mixed it up with my second choice; Maple and pecans. Equally smooth and creamy, this is less nectarous than the caramel variant but it has a modest pecan bites in them, adding extra depth, quite nutty but Maple Delights is more generous in their walnut helping. The service is prompt although the lady at the counter didn't win the "most friendlier" badge from me. But the gooey taste in that single scoop makes up for that. Firstly it has a proper schedule that isn't affected but the weather or the mood of the owner and it is open until 10pm. Secondly, it has creative new flavours at reasonable prices. So you can actually get two scoops and a decent amount of ice cream for under 10$. Lastly, and this is a big one, the people that work at Havre know their stuff and offer amazing advice. The whole concept is to mix and match flavours in order to get new creations of ice cream goodness unique to your pallet. You have time to taste 3 or 4 flavours and the staff always offers suggestions of what flavours to mix together. I always believe that people make restaurants and well ice-cream parlours. As good as your product is, if it isn't presented to the customer properly it won't leave a lasting impression. To me Bilboquet is simply the GOD of ice cream in Montreal, but Havre aux Glaces (Ice cream's Haven) comes close, pre--tty close. The shop is squeezed between a cheese shop and a sandwich stand, but you probably won't miss it thanks to the mile-long queue in front. The shop is cramped but pretty and colorful. I was pleasantly surprised by the easy-going and friendly service. Another surprise is their flavors. Now that every other shop sells lemon and matcha ice cream, ice cream parlours have to constantly outdo themselves. I found burnt maple, ginger, hazelnut, expresso and 72% cocoa chocolate ice cream. Now I know I NEED to be back to taste that one. Seriously, it is pitch-black with cocoa! Their sorbet selection is generous (my parents favourite was blood-orange). I was totally blown away by how authentic the flavours are, you really taste fruit, and the natural aromas of whatever it is you chose. Their greatest size is around 4$ which is a sufficient quantity to bring along with you on your discovery of Jean-Talon market. I knocked a star off because they don't have that much choice in terms of portion sizes or cones which is a crying shame.
