We drove over an hour to visit Haven Humane. Compared to some other shelters we have visited lately, the staff here was awesome, as well as the cleanliness was top notch. We found the perfect dog, couldn't take him home as next day he had a surgery scheduled. They took such great care of him, and the team of veterinarians were fantastic and extremely informative. I just want to start off by saying that I understand that animal shelters can't save the world, but how you speak to people, and using condescending tones matter. My cousin found a dog a few months ago, and my 10 year old daughter was with her when they found her- my daughter and I don't want her sitting in a shelter. We were in the process of moving from Sonoma County to Shasta County. To make a long story short, we are now living up in shasta county full time. Today I went into Haven for some guidance, and explaining I am happy to foster her in my home until she is adopted. I was immediately spoke to like I was stupid for not "knowing Haven's Rules.' Now that she has been in our care for over 30 days, Haven refused to help us. The rude girl in the back area kept poking her head out to add and repeat the same rude, condescending comments. I just thought it was really unnecessary and mean spirited- Questioning if I even found the dog in shasta county- as if it mattered at this point, because you already told me "here's what that means, it means we won't be taking the dog and that she's your responsibility." And yes, my cousin found here in Redding. WHAT IS HAPPENING?! I have been trying to rehome this great dog and keep her out of a kennel, but I have learned that that is a bad thing to do in Haven's eyes. I don't work at a shelter, and I don't know what the specifics rules are. I'm sorry that I messed up. I was just trying to help. We have adopted and fostered with Haven in the past when we lived in shasta county three years ago, but I left feeling very ignored, spoken down to, like I was stupid for not knowing Haven's rules (I know, how dare I not study the pamphlet before stepping foot in their building). I understand that there is basically an epidemic of stray animals in Shasta County, but how you speak to people should matter. Even if you're unpaid volunteering, please rethink your "good deed" if you are going to go out of your way to try and make people feel unintelligent, dishonest, and just overall icky. I'm very disappointed in how I was treated today by the two women in the very first building- the pregnant woman and the other woman that was working with her. Boo. I have contacted haven a handful of times in the last 40 years 40 years And not 1 single solitary time have they helped me. This was the worst place I have EVER been to for my animals. We have a feral cat infestation on our property and it is getting out of hand so we NEED them spayed and neutered, but when a friend told us that they cost less to get for ferals and infestations, we decided to go, but nope nada not at all! The service there was horrible and they started charging us more because, mind you they are cats that LIVE OUTDOORS, a couple of them had cuts on their head and they made us pay extra for them to vaccinate them and cuts. We do not need them vaccinated, we need them fixed! The people at the front desk were very rude and I honestly hope to never see them again. I didn't realize Haven Humane wasn't no kill until I was told by CEO Mark Storrey. Long story short...my husband found a cat that had been hit by a vehicle out at the college and we took it in to Haven after he contacted them. Before signing the paperwork to drop her off in their care, he asked them to contact us before a decision about euthanizing her was made so we could look into other possible options for her if it came to that. Most cats out at the college are completely feral and this one wasn't. At all. Seems like maybe she got away from her owner ... or was dropped off ... anyway, once we were assured someone would call us if euthanasia was being considered, we left having filled out foster papers to take care of her until she could be placed in a home. We travel too much right now so we are pet free for the time being. Anyway, we called later in the day but nobody answered the phones. We each left a message with the vet. Still no return call. We were told they were open till 6 so my husband went out when he was off work at 5 and they were closed. I called the vet office the next morning, still no answer so I called and pushed the button for animal control and they answered. They got me over to someone at the vet office where I was told the cat was killed because her pelvis was broken. I was devastated. After talking to a few other people, some kind and one quite condescending, I left a message for Mark and he called me the next day. He said he'd find out why we didn't receive a call about her being put down and stated he did see the notes about us asking for that but offered no real help. Except to let me know they aren't no kill. I've since heard some alarming stories about them and won't ever take a found, injured animal there again. My ultimate goal in speaking with Mark was the lack of follow through on what we were promised between departments. People who love animals want what's best for them and want to know the hands they're leaving them in mean what they say. We've had a couple other unrelated and unfortunate experiences with this facility so we definitely won't be going back. read more

One woman who works her reminded me of a nurse years ago. There were not enough incubators for the babies. They put two babies in a room and left them. I was told to put a box of kittens where I found them without the box. Let them die, I guess. Then she gives me a sheet of paper that gives me possible solutions. She never appeared caring, just indifferent. I am so glad she didn't became a nurse with her attitude. I took them home instead. My Lola looks at me and then the kittens. read more

I set up an appointment to meet a specific dog (Cyrus). We used one of the rooms to see if it was a good connection, and we all really liked him so I immediately filled out the adoption contract. A sweet volunteer started chatting with me and told me more about Cyrus that made me like him even more. The whole process was as easy as could be expected. Recently, I was forced to take my beloved senior companion cat to end her life. I'm a quadriplegic (w/TBI & brain tumor) & a shut-in. We don't have transportation for my 370 lb wheelchair. Instead, I suffered an enormous amount of pain, trying to ambulate a great distance (for me) w/my walker, then perching on a hard wooden bench, feet on a stool to (barely) ease the excruciating pain. I put myself through it because I love my companion cat & wanted her to have a peaceful, PAINLESS death w/her mama beside her. Since I only go out for medical appts, she spent nearly every day with me, for almost 13 years. I always joked her highest ambition was to become one of my internal organs. I brought her to Haven purring, full of love despite the stress of being at the vets, because she was there with me -- her mama since her rescue at 5 wks old -- and I've never allowed anyone or anything to hurt her. But at Haven, she died in screaming in pain, panting in terror. Dr. Cross claimed she was "asleep," but I have medical training (as well a mother who was in a coma for months), and that was NOT "sleep." She was paralyzed; not "sleeping," so there's no way to know if she was conscious or not. I suspect she was fully aware. Instead of peacefully setting my baby free of pain, they made her death as traumatic as possible, for all of us. My sister, who loved her, too, was also devastated by this experience. I'll NEVER get over it. Dr. Cross did NOT make us fully aware of how painful this would be for my cat. If she had, I would've walked straight out that door & found someone who actually cares about the HUMANE treatment of pets & their people! Haven needs to remove the word "Humane" from their name. It's false advertising; in fact, it's an outright LIE. There was NOTHING 'humane' about what they did to my beloved baby. I looked up this 2-shot procedure online. It's NOT supposed to be painful, so that indicates Dr. Cross is too poorly trained to be trusted with the euthanasia of pets. Either that, or she deliberately chose drugs that would cause as much pain as possible to the animal. Only a sadist could do that what she did to someone's pet, directly in front of the owner. And since she admitted that OTHER pet owners had complained (but made it sound like they were exaggerating), she knew BEFORE she gave the 1st injection that it would hurt my cat horribly. If nothing else, Haven is guilty of deceiving me, in regard to the amount of pain this would cause my baby. They need OPEN DISCLOSURE of the actual amount of terrible suffering this series of injections causes. The way they tricked me (and my sister) into allowing this was EXTREMELY deceptive. This procedure should NEVER be used without full disclosure of the actual pain it causes. Since -- according to Dr. Cross -- I'm NOT the first pet owner to find this procedure upsetting, they already KNOW this is a problem. There's NO EXCUSE for Haven allowing this to continue. It needs to stop. NOW! At the very least, Haven needs to review the training of Dr. Cross & ensure she's not allowed to torture dying pets in the future! I also found the way they handled her to be both disrespectful & distressing. The overly loud, attention-seeking assistant grabbed her by her CHEST FUR & jerked her around on the table, supposedly so I could stroke her head while the 2nd injection was administered. They claimed she wasn't aware, but how can they KNOW when it's a cat who can't speak? Recent evidence indicates those in comas ARE aware. What did my baby think of her mama, allowing them to treat her so badly? Even if Cross were correct & she didn't know, I DID know. I saw it, and it upset ME. If they don't care about the pets, they should at least have some compassion for the owners! Haven needs to teach that man how to behave when people are grieving. His behavior was disgraceful; he behaved like he was at a party! He should -- at least -- figure out how to appear a little less gleeful in the presence of grieving clients. He needs to learn PROFESSIONAL office behavior, including keeping one's voice at an appropriate volume. Especially around animals already stressed from being at the vets -- & MOST especially when people are waiting with dying pets! About 2 months ago, my sister took her 18-yr-old cat to Haven for a peaceful death. One shot, and her cat passed on, painlessly & at peace. So we didn't expect this. I feel deceived, because Cross never made it clear how painful the process really was. I would NEVER have allowed it to happen, had I know, but she spoke about past patients being 'upset' in a dismissive tone that led us to believe those patients had been 'overreacting.' I don't know why Cross made my cat suffer so horribly, but I can only assume she's a sadist. Nobody with a drop of compassion could possibly torture a dying pet that way, unless they actually enjoy causing pain, bot to pets & their owners. We took our 14 year old, beloved dog to Haven for end of life services. Under the circumstances, it was the best experience we could've asked for. Everyone was so accommodating, sympathetic and really caring toward us and our dog. We were offered a private room, gentle handling and even allowed to spend time with him after he passed. It was a very peaceful, beautiful goodbye. If you have to say goodbye to your pet, I highly recommend using Haven. They made it so much easier for us. read more

My mother died years ago and my father recently passed (i had to take care of them both because my father blew all their money and I was threatened with elderly abandonment charges if i didn't care for them) and that cost me my job. The bank did what banks do and used every trick in the book l to sell the house out from under my family and so I am now homeless. Feeding myself is hard enough now and now these guys just forced me to take on another mouth to feed while making it impossible to gain employment because I have nowhere to leave him while working... these people are horrible and showed not only no compassion but actual contempt. They are ONLY about money and making life as hard as possible so they can fine people who already have NOTHING! read more

I found a dog named Snow White on petfinder that Haven had listen available for adoption. I wrote them interested in adopting her. I fulled out an online adoption form. I didn't get an immediate response & when I did get a respinse they told me the dog was so new to them they didn't know her personality well & she was scared. I said we would like to meet her & that's understandable because rescues can be overwhelming to some dogs. We wanted to schedule a time to meet her over the weekend. I recieved no response, until wed. the next week to tell me they had killed her rather than adopt her to us. I was in total shock, apalled and disgusted. I have no words. This dog was a beautiful, young, perfectly healthy animal that was not eating because she was afraid and had been there a very short time. Absolutely the most unprofessional group of people around. We had a stray cat hanging around our house for 6 months. We decided we did not want it to have kittens so we took it in to get spayed. We specifically explained that we found her and had them check to see if she was already spayed. They shaved her and said no. We left and came back to pick her up. Turns out they cut her open, again, to find out she was spayed. They proceeded to charge us more then we were quoted because they would not honor the quoted discount since they cut her open but did not actually do anything for her. Would never take another animal to this group. Recap: 1)They don't know what they are looking for in a spayed cat. 2)They unnecessarily cut open a cat. 3)They did not honor their quoted price. 4)Were then holding the cat until we paid the higher price. read more

My review of Haven depends on which department I'm contacting. Last year I had to give up a litter of kittens. Their mom was a stray (I kept one of her daughters). This year I thought I was OK with doing cat rescues. But the 1st cat I rescued had 4 babies. The kittens were almost 3 weeks old I took mom and babies to Haven. It was a horrible experience. If I'm dealing with the people in the Spay and Neuter department they seem to be compassionate. The animal regulation people are 2-thumbs-down! Two thumbs down, uneducated, no skill required want-to-be cops. Period. I want to go and get those kittens back and their mom but I know they won't let me. So sad and guilty. read more

Typically, I would give five stars because I know of the love these folks have for animals. However, there is a HUGE flaw in their "spay & neuter" info on their website. The third Sunday is "Feral Cat" spay day. The community is encouraged to bring the feral cats in their area on this special Sunday for discount spaying of these animals. A GREAT service and many of us are eager to control the growing problem of unwanted kitties. Today being the third Sunday, I read the info on the webpage, woo'd the feral kitty into my arms & put her in the kitty carrier I borrowed. Here's where the problem arises. No feral cats will be accepted unless in a feral cat capture cage. Had I known that...had the website read "All feral cats must be presented in a feral cat cage" I would have borrowed one and brought her in it. Rather, we were turned away for our 25 minute drive back home. Perhaps another option would be to have feral cages in the shelter so we can move them over. Whatever! There were others turned away as well. One guy is just going to let the cats go. He said it was too big of a hassle to do this again. So, Haven Human... Please change your wording to reflect this requirement & we'll gladly change our stars from one to five again! read more

A wonderful animal shelter that puts a lot of effort into decreasing the population. Their kennels and cat rooms are clean and safe for the animals, trainers are there to work with dogs that really need it. The facility is very clean and inviting. Their adoption rates are very low, $135 for a dog, includes vaccinations (distemper, rabies, parvo, kennel cough), heartworm test, exam, spay/neuter, microchip, flea/tick/heartworm preventative, and a free bag of dog food. That's mind blowingly cheap, and prices are often reduced to help dogs find homes if they haven't had much luck. $85 for a cat, includes rabies, upper respiratory infecting vaccinations, felv/fiv test, spay/neuter, exam, microchip, flea/tick/heartworm preventative and a free bag of cat food as well. Prices are also reduced sometimes. Their clinic provides very low cost spay/neuter and vaccinations to the community, as well as low cost vet care to folks on medical/medicare. read more

I have been trying to trap feral cats in my backyard and caught a skunk instead. I learned the hard way not to attempt to release it myself. After several showers, bathing, and laundering, things are back to normal and I called HHS about the skunk since I'm not about to try releasing it again. They dispatched a police officer to remove the skunk. I want to see how he handles it without getting sprayed. My only complaint is that the officer will take the trap with the skunk. I will have to drive to HHS and pick the trap back up myself. I wish the officer could just transfer the skunk to another cage instead of transporting it in mine. read more

When we adopted a dog from Haven, we were told about their "return" policy. But when we needed to return the dog 2 days after the acceptable return day, I was told that I had take the dog back home due to a lack of spot for the dog. I tried explaining that I called earlier and was told they were holding a spot for us because both of our small children were scared of the lab mix. But was still told I had to take the dog back home. After a lengthy conversation and me in tears, I was told they would take the dog but I was going to be black listed for the rest of time from being able to adopt any kind of animal from Haven. read more

I had my male dog nurtured today and we had a great experience at Haven Humane. The staff were friendly and competent, the place was clean and there was lots of cute dog paintings hung on the walls. I really appreciate how sweet the staff were especially since they have such a stressful job! The operation was very affordable, his neuter, rabies and license came out to $82 dollars! Definitely get your dog licensed , they give you a voucher for the operation! My Luke dog is happy to be home and in good spirits, thanks haven humane!! read more

Took my two cats there for a general check up- the usual flea treatment, update of vaccines, etc.... They didn't seem to even give one cat any flea treatments at all, and after the appointment, the other cat seemed "off" i.e couldn't walk straight, dizzy, lethargic, wouldn't drink water or eat, etc.... I took him back in again and told them my concerns, they gave my cat an I.V. (the I.V site seems like a point of irritation which my cat scratched all his fur off, and opened a new wound area). The whole general appointment left me with high anxiety, because I thought I was losing my cat from the simple treatments there. This experience left me somewhat apprehensive about bringing my animals to a vet, as I fear we may encounter this again, or worse.... read more

Took my fur baby in for her to get fixed since I was on a tight income and I could afford Haven. Little did I know that the end result would be my paying way more. Day 2 after her operation her front paw began to swell. I called them back and they said I could bring her in and they would take a look at it but due to it not having anything to do with her operation it would not be covered. I waited for the supervisor to contact me back and never heard from her. This was a Friday, by Saturday morning my pups paw was so swollen it looked like it was going to split open and she had this horrible cough and continuous sneezing. Long story short I had to take her to Asher. Turned out she had cellulitis from not being properly prepped for iv and she had kennel cough. (my other dog got it too) it wasn't until I wrote a review on their fb page did the supervisor contact me. Now their review section is gone ‍ spend more money and take your pet elsewhere, you'll save money in the end. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Very disappointed with their adoption services. I went to adopt a kitty for their full price of $75. I noticed the kitty smelled really bad on the way home so gave him a bath immediately. Still stank, gave another bath. Also noticed liquid coming from his butt and it had the most putrid smell EVER. Called Haven and they said oh its just stress; if there is still diarrhea tomorrow, call again. Overnight I left the kitty in the bathroom with a tower, bed, etc. Woke up to a stench. Before I even opened the door, it smelled. I called Haven and they said I could bring him back for a dr visit; however, I would be responsible for the meds. Excuse me??? You sold me a sick kitten! It's like me selling someone a used computer with a virus and then telling them "well go get it fixed!" Who does that??? Kennel cough I get... but diarrhea within hrs of being sold is unethical and disgusting that they can hand off a kitten to an unsuspecting buyer, who just lost a cat from being hit by a car, to now having to deal with a sickly kitten. Am I willing to pay for meds? Absolutely. Should I in this instance? Absolutely not! I would STRONGLY advise people to think twice before purchasing a kitten here. I'm able to exchange for another kitten, but I'd rather be at a loss at this point. I've lost $75 as well as a nice cat tower and a cat bed that are now ruined because they sold me a sick kitty. The kitten smelled when I bought him. HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW YOU WERE SELLING ME A SICK KITTEN? DO YOUR JOB AND TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR ANIMALS. read more

They also pretend to send out reminders about when licenses expire but they don't. It's all a con to fine people $50 and then berate them when they come in to renue. I have had THE WORST experience with the clinic. I was told my new adopted dog would be ready Monday after 4. After waiting for 40 minutes I was told she was not ready today because she had just had surgery a couple of hours ago. Any professional business would've called me ahead of time so I wouldn't have to drive all the way out there let alone wait 40 minutes just to be disappointed. The next day when I went to pick her up they forgot to give me her medicine. I had to make a third trip there in less than 24 hours. Now one of her stitches came out and they are not answering the phone. I tried the animal shelter and was told there is nothing they can do. At this point I'm ready to take her to another clinic just to avoid going back. The adoption center was amazing for us though, and we absolutely love our little angel. read more

I wish I could give no stars to this place. I found some kittens that had clearly been dumped off the side of the road. When I called, I was hung up on. Also, I have a cat that I adopted from them several years ago. They had neutered and gave him all vaccinations when he was very ill with a fever. I asked if they check temperature before putting an animal under anesthesia and was told that they didn't have an answer for me. I consider it very lucky that he didn't die during the procedure. I then wondered just how many animals don't "make it" through surgery because of a simple kennel cough. I would have waited. read more

This business is neither Humane, nor a Haven for animals. They should be ashamed of themselves! Taking advantage of people in mourning. Making it almost impossible for a family to rescue their own deceased family members dog! When my Stepmom passed away, Haven Humane came to rescue her lil 10 year old Chihuahua. None of the family were nearby at the time, nor did we know she had passed away, until Haven Humane already had her dog. This doggie was her companion animal his whole life. She was a paraplegic. Her 5lb Chihuahua was by her side in her wheelchair and slept with her, too. The lil guy was so traumatized after witnessing her dying, and being carried away by strangers, that he tried to bite. Their "professionals" listed him as abandoned and vicious. All 5+lbs of him... and they couldnt handle him? They had him less than a week, and by the time we rescued him FROM them, he had lost so much weight, his bones showed. He had lost almost a pound! I have had him with me just over a week, and he looks fabulous again. We paid dearly to retrieve him from them after our terrible family tragedy. We were in mourning from losing our family member. We explained our situation. Then, they charged us an abandoned fee, AND for the bite. I believe that little dog could bite as hard as possible, and still not hurt anyone. Especially a professional. These people are NOT professionals, unless its about getting people to pay them money unfairly. I mean, REALLY?!!! Abandoned does not fit here. Poor little guy lost his Mommy! After I got home with this poor little traumatized doggie, ( drove 5 hours each way) I needed to know what shots or vet care he may have received while in their care. So, I called them the very next day. They were rude and unprofessional. Said I would have to give them his "number" so they would know which dog I was asking about. I gave them the date, and address of where they had picked him up. I gave them the description, and the date and time he was claimed from them. They still couldnt help me, refusing, because I did no have his "number". How many unaltered Chihuahuas did they pick up from that Motel that date? ONE! How many 10 year old unaltered Chihuahuas did people pick up that date? ONE! How many Chihuahuas were so vicious they had to charge the person that rescued them? NONE, I say. He was just traumatized. Im beyond pissed. I came to Haven Humane 10/28 in hopes to find a dog. I found 2 pugs that I feel in love with. A worker asked me if I wanted to visit with the female, I said yes. As I was holding her, the worker was called out and came back in 2 minutes later telling me that the pugs weren't adoptable. they were waiting for the owners to get them. As I walked out, the receptionist asked me if I wanted to fill out the form in case the owners didnt get them. Of course!! I was told i'd find out on 11/7. At one point, I called to check to see if they were still there. Yes they were. They told me again, the 7th is when I would find out. ok! Today is the 7th... I couldn't wait to find out.... I call.... "umm im sorry but we called you monday because they were released then. We called several times and the voicemail box wasn't set up." LOAD OF CRAP! I honestly feel they didn't try. And two, YOU GUYS TOLD ME THE 7TH!!!! Don't give someone a date (I dont care if you "tried" to call, you still wait till the 7th) The dogs are now with another adoption agency and the adoption fees are way higher than haven humane... which pisses me off even more!
