"What do you get when you cross a Smurf with a cow? Blue cheese!" -- The Smurfs (2011)
What an utter disappointment.
My Mom and I came here to celebrate my birthday on a Saturday night - reservations made through Open Table, well in advance. While 7:30pm is prime time, I expect a restaurant to be properly staffed when they know the crowds they are going to have. Apparently, not so.
The place is nice, dimly lit, but a nice, chill atmosphere. However, because of the exposed brick walls, there is nothing to absorb sound in the place, so when the restaurant is filled to capacity, it is almost deafening inside. Luckily, their music is at a soft level, but with tables too close together, you really do find yourself almost yelling at one another to have a conversation.
Our waitress took a while to come to our table after we were seated by the hostess (which was immediate) - but she did not give us her name. I finally asked - Sharon. It took until her second visit to the table to take drink orders. My Mom ordered a scotch and I asked if they had any cider. Sharon said they usually have Crispin and she would check. Unfortunately, no they don't, but how about a Moscow Mule. Okay, these are not interchangeable drinks at all. But I said sure. Once they were delivered, the mule was in a tall glass and was so sweet it was not drinkable. So, not really a mule.
Sharon gave us the specials and walked away to let us make decisions. She had at least 3 other tables we knew about (big spender 4-top to my right and 2 tables behind me). She finally returned and we ordered appetizers. Mom was still trying to decide between 2 entrees (Sharon offered no help here), so I asked her to put in the apps and come right back). About 15 minutes later, our apps arrived and we began eating. Still no Sharon. We were halfway through our starters (with waiters rushing past and knocking the menus off the tiny table) when she returned and asked if we wanted to put in our entree orders yet. Sigh. Um, yeah about 30 minutes ago! This gives you an indication of the level of service and how little we saw Sharon. She did apologize each time she came to the table, but that becomes empty after awhile and she was a "chatty Cathy" at the other tables. We were more of a nuisance to her, it seemed.
We decided since it was my birthday that we would take home leftover entrees (not eat it all) and opt for desserts. I now regret that decision. I had to flag Sharon to get boxes and dessert menus. She returned the food in bags and delivered the menus...and then crickets. I finally caught the eye of the manager/owner? and shook my head and put my head in my hands. He did come over and asked if we needed anything. I told him we would love to order dessert if we had a server. He took our order. Sharon showed up a couple of minutes later (dessert menus were off the table) and I explained that her boss took our order. After the desserts came out, she came by the table and asked my Mom if she ever got her wine (I ordered a glass to be delivered with her entree). No, Sharon, we didn't. "oh gosh," she said. I told her to make sure it was not on the bill. No return visit from the owner, no apologies, nothing.
So let's talk about the food as it was the ONLY saving grace. My mom started with the fried Gulf oysters with lemon grits and was in heaven - they were small and and she raved. I, however, ordered the Mama J's Butter Lettuce salad with candied bacon and creamy blue cheese. So look, you all know I've been classically trained. So certain things probably bug me more than most - whole lettuce leaves? Topped with a whole slice of bacon? I feel like this would be fine had the place setting included more than a glorified butter knife. I really struggled eating this salad. At least crumble or chop the bacon, please? The whole lettuce leaves were a serious struggle - my chefs would have failed me for not tearing the leaves. However, the flavor was delicious - a bit too blue cheesy for me. I don't feel you need a blue cheese dressing and crumbled blue cheese.
Entrees: Mom had the bacon wrapped whole trout (more grits) and spiced pecan butter. She was almost silent eating with is a testament. I ordered the Cowboy Ribeye, medium rare, with the sautéed mushrooms. The ribeye was amazingly good and I would have eaten it all had I not wanted to get dessert. The mushrooms need to be rethought, or the menu needs to state that they are spicy/peppery. I love spice, but I didn't want spice that night. So I would have ordered something else as my side or maybe a sauce. Or Sharon could have mentioned it. They were good, just not what I wanted.
As for dessert, Mom went with the Banana Pudding (served in a Ball Jar) with homemade Nilla Wafers and was very happy. I opted for the Warm Brownie with salted caramel ice cream and espresso sauce. Out of this world, but big enough to be shared, so half of it came home.
Food gets 4 stars, service 1.5. I won't be back. read more
