Living in North Atlanta, we frequently go out on the weekend for brunch. Sometimes with friends, sometimes just my wife and I, we have tried a good number of places from Five Points to Cumming. Not wanting to go far this past Sunday, the two of us decided to give Haven a try. The restaurant is clean, well decorated, with both inside and patio seating (we did not have to wait at 11:30am on a Sunday morning, which was a bonus). We chose an air conditioned table inside, and were seated by a very nice hostess at a 2-top in the center of the dining area (more on this below).
The menu was relatively simple. We chose an appetizer of Biscuits'n'Gravy; my wife had the Eggs Benedict; and I had the French Toast with a side of bacon. Please note that I specified a 'side' of bacon - Haven's brunch menu is pretty much a' la carte. If you order French toast, you get a couple slices of homemade french toast with some whipped cream and a few (5) blueberries on top.... and that's it. Eggs Bene? same thing. No protein, no grits, no side of fresh fruit - nothing. And I think this is one thing about Haven that bothered me: They don't make COMPLETE meals with perfectly partnered/balanced sides; rather, they make individual components and let the patron choose IF they want anything else.
Now, the food quality was good! The Eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked - as was the French Toast - As were the biscuits. Everything was TECHNICALLY perfectly cooked...... however, technique is only part of the puzzle, as nothing was really 'memorable'. The taste of the french toast was good. Not great, but good. Same with the biscuits. Same with the Eggs. (see a trend?).
Service at Haven was excellent. While there appeared to be a slight mix-up on who our server was, everyone was very attentive and seemed surprised when I thanked them for filling my water and coffee (has Brookhaven really become that snobby?).
The table we were sitting at was right in the middle of the restaurant. While this might be awkward in some restaurants, the tightness of this dining area made it awkward AND uncomfortable. This center path serves as the primary walkway for servers and other diners. This made for a constant watching of elbows and holding drinks to make sure people having to squeeze by each other didn't accidentally bump the table. Additionally, other diners were directly facing us, not any further than five feet away, which made it difficult to have a private conversation.
Given all of this, I think Haven deserves a solid 3 stars. The service was excellent, the food was good, and the restaurant was clean. However, the lack of complete dishes seems to drain some magic out of eating out. You aren't able to experience the chefs creation of a meal, but rather only parts of it. This combined with nothing memorable that separates it from the drove of other brunch locations really gives us no reason to go back.
Overall meal cost: $52, including tip (2 coffee, Biscuits and Gravy, French Toast, Eggs Benedict, Side of Bacon).
Pros:
Clean restaurant, good location, good food, great service, no wait (for us).
Cons:
Incomplete plates, seating can be cramped, nothing 'memorable'. read more
