In the historic section of Downtown Glendale, a block away from Murphy Park is Haus Murphy. Laid back and casual setting, diners here can enjoy a delicious, German meal; one of the best schnitzel I've tasted! Start off with the Bavarian Pretzel; the pretzel is incredible with the spicy mustard! Definitely order the Potato Pancakes! Crispy outside, delicious potato inside and serving it with sour cream and applesauce - amazing! If we didn't order dinner, our party would have ordered 2 more of these! I had the Jäger Schnitzel, so delish! More yummy potatoes and the red cabbage was tasty (don't knock it 'til you try it!)! Also, if you're not sure what biers to order, they offer a flight of 4 biers. Not sure which 4 to order, no problem, our server selected 4 for us and all tasted good. We had Reservations for 6pm for a party of 20 but it was downsized to 11 people. Our Server was Kaylie and she started out nice but we had people ordering drinks and asking about different items on the menu and that started to irritate her. We had Appetizers and they came out fairly soon but after about another hour sitting there, she came back out to check to see what 3 people in the party had ordered. So we politely asked her if they forgot the order or hadn't made it (We were going to just ask them to cancel the order at that time since we were all starving) and she told us that it was ordered & she just needed to verify it. She wrote down all our orders so she had her pad of paper she could have verified it truthfully with the kitchen. So it is going on about 8pm and the dishes start slowly trickling out. Mind you other parties have already been seated served and have left while we were waiting for our food. The food came out at all different temps, some meals were hot, some were just warm like they were sitting there or under a heat lamp. The Meatloaf was very dry and the Beef Roulade was extremely tough and had no flavor like I've had before there. She never came back to check to see how any of our meals were or how we were doing but sadly she complained about our table to the other waiters and bartender since we overheard it. The Bar area and outside seating area have gone down hill. They used to have strings of lights outside that ran over the table area which are gone and inside it used to be a little darker for a more authentic feel but that has all gone away. This was my Favorite place to come after Thanksgiving but the Service has drastically gone down hill and the food was not as genuine and delicious as years past! I'm not sure if Owners have changed or they don't care about the Restaurant like before but it definitely shows. Our bill of $489.00 wasn't cheap for the sub par experience & mediocre service. Hidden little gem in downtown Glendale. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know a lot about German food and drink, but Haus Murphy's is worth a visit! Service: Nothing too special here but they're certainly friendly enough and get the job done. We came on a Saturday evening without reservations and despite being very busy they found a spot for us. Food/Drink: Again, I have nothing to compare it against in terms of German food but it was all enjoyable. I think I got the Jager Schnitzel and Potato Pancakes along with two different wines while I was there. The Schnitzel had great flavors and a nice crispy texture and the Potato Pancakes were decent but I didn't really dig the sauces. It's been a few months now and I forget which wines I drank, but one was German and one was French. Neither were varietals I had heard of before. I've never been the biggest fan of old world wines, but these weren't bad and getting to try new varietals is always fun. Ambiance: This was the highlight in my opinion. From the front door the restaurant winds through various rooms with a range of German decor. As we approached the large back room where we would be seated we started hearing accordion music with voices singing. As we walk in the room we see a jovial old man playing an accordion with the entire room singing along to "Do-Re-Mi"! Tried this place based on a colleague's recommendation. We got the platter for 2 and Schnitzel sampler and it was more than enough food for 3 people it would probably feed 4-5 comfortably. The Schnitzels were all great, the meatloaf got mixed opinions from the group it definitely doesn't taste like the standard American meatloaf but it is authentic German food after all. I also tried their Grapefruit beer and it was probably one of the best I've had, though I don't drink much. I also loved the atmosphere it was quaint but clean and they had fun German music, I assume folk it wasn't pop or anything. The food did take awhile to come out but I take that as it being prepared from Scratch. They also offered me a nice little Streudel for my birthday which was also delicious. read more

Attended their Oktoberfest. Made a reservation for 6:00. Didn't matter, because we ended up waiting for 20 minutes in line. Reservations couldn't be made online, you had to send them your phone number and they call you individually. Cover charge was $10pp, cash only, even though they accept cards for food. No ATM on premises. Finally seated around 6:30. Wait a while, order drinks. Wait longer. Eventually order food. We order appetizers, mains, and try to order dessert. Our waiter gives us attitude for trying to order dessert along. Completely uncalled for. Eventually receive drinks. Wait at least another 30 minutes. Finally receive apps. Pretzel was fine, but we were starving by this point, as it was 90 minutes from when our reservation was supposed to begin. Finish it quickly. Wait, literally, no joke, at least another hour. They forgot about us. I go to get another drink. Apparently getting drink tickets at the front is cheaper than ordering with the server. Oh well. Server is giving everyone around us attitude for asking where their food is. Other people leave without paying because they were forgotten about too. Other people around us eventually receive their food. They help flag our waiter. They finally bring our mains out. It's for the wrong table. Oops. Another few minutes. At long last, our food is here, 2.5 hours from our reservation start. It's cold. Schnitzel is soggy. Potatoes are burnt. We eat. We give up on dessert. We wait at least another 30 minutes for the check. It's for the wrong table. Wait a few more. The check now has a bunch of extra stuff we didn't order on it. Finally receive correct check. Waiter is nowhere to be found to take it. Flag someone else to charge it. We finally receive it back and leave, 3.5 hours from our reservation start time. You may ask, why didn't we go and dance and listen to the band since it's Oktoberfest? We wish we could. We could barely hear them. There was hardly room near the stage to dance. The benches were set up so it was nigh impossible to get out from them on one side next to the wall. Once you were in, you were in. The most depressingly disappointing experience we've had in Phoenix. People say this is the best Oktoberfest in the Valley. Somehow that's true (Oktoberfest Tempe is impressively worse), and yet it is also completely unrecommendable. read more

It isn't bad, but with so many places to eat, I prefer to spend my money on more than just OK food. My grandson wanted to eat here so we did. It's been years since I was here. Walked in and it looked like the place hadn't been cared for and the tables and chairs looked it. We ordered, and the food came out hot. I got veal schnitzel, and my wife and grandson shared a schnitzel platter. The food was once again OK. MY SCHNITZEL was bland. My wife tasted hers and said I make it better. The server was very nice, but it took a while for someone to come to us. When she did she greeted us with "has anyone helped you yet"? This place was SO good! My nephew has been wanting to try this eatery and decided that now (while my husband and I were visiting) was the best time! I'm so glad that he waited for us. This place was actually featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. There was so much to choose from. We started with an order of their stuffed mushrooms. They were stuffed with sausage, spinach and herbs, and served over some kind of mushroom cream sauce. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. For my entree I ordered the Schnitzel sampler plate. It came with one Chicken schnitzel, one Jaeger schnitzel, and one Paprika schnitzel. I liked them all, but I think I liked the Paprika one the best. It was served with German potatoes and red cabbage. All very good, and very plentiful. My husband got the Kassler Brat combo, my nephew got the Big Smoky Beef Bratwurst, and my niece got a Caesar salad with chicken. There were no complaints. My best friend is part German and she always tell me how this place remind her of being back home with her grandparents. So we met for lunch. I wanted to try a little bit of everything and for her it was nostalgia. I got the paprika schnitzel and it was so delicious. I don't know what sauce they put on top, but it was so yummy. The like red cabbage thing they give you actually isn't that bad, but it is sweet. We did order a few different appetizers which were just as delicious. And of course we got this sauerkraut torte which just taste like a chocolate cake with a different weird type texture that I don't hate. I love the decoration the music was nice. Our waitress was very kind. I want to say we were there probably about an hour. It did not take us very long to get our food. We were seated by right way. We did come Friday right about 12:30 PM so close to opening. I want to say we left about 2 PM and it was starting to get busy. It could definitely be a pricey place. Horrible customer service. I want to start by saying this is the most racist place I have ever been to. I walk in to use the restroom and right away a bus boy or server asked if we were customers we say yes we're at the bar. Than when I use the restroom again the boy walks into the restroom just to ask if we are paying customers. I was very confused why a man was in the girls restroom. I told him we're at the bar once again and I expressed the concern to another co worker and they just walked away. We were excited to try this place in Glendale after having made our first trip to Germany last month. However, the similar menu items to those in Germany are about the extent of the similarities. Here's the good: The waiter (a guy whose name eludes me) was very kind and friendly; he also kept our water filled. The menu was also very German. The potato salad are hot, cooked potatoes - they were good. Now, the not-so-good: The wait for our food was long. The kids mac-n-cheese looked like it had sat on the counter a while & was barely warm. The sauerkraut is nothing like in Germany - it was super sweet. Same with the red cabbage. The jalapeño cheddar brat was alright but the smoky beef brat was better. We would also have preferred the brats a little more browned on the outside. The chicken schnitzel was just okay. My family visited this place on Wednesday and it had quite a few people dining. We were sat in the back room so it was pretty quiet. We ordered the Oktoberfest big pretzel with the house cheese and the potato pancakes as starters. They were pretty good, although i wasn't a fan of the cheese dip. For mains we ordered Wiener schnitzel, chicken schnitzel, das Haus brot, currywurst, and Oma's hackenbraten. There were no complaints on the food at all. We were also celebrating a birthday so they gave us a small slice of apple strudel which was super good too. We also ordered a apfelschnapps snot which was incredibly good. Our waitress was very attentive and the food all came out hot. We enjoyed our food. I did use the restroom here and it was a little odd, one stall have the toilet seat completely removed and sitting on the floor. Thankfully the other stall was all put together. It is in an older building so it's a little "small" and the entrance isn't marked very well (it's through the outside sitting area as opposed to the front door) there is also a missing gate or something to the outside sitting area that has some exposed bolts that my sister stepped on and hurt her foot. So just be aware as there wasn't any signage or anything warning and someone could trip and fall or puncture there shoe on it. read more

It was AMAZING! I think somethings have been adopted to fit a more American palette, but this is a must try and don't forget the beer! read more

It has been a very long time since I have been to this place, partly because it is on the complete opposite end of the valley for me. I know people talk about the meat and sausages, which were definitely solid and very German in my opinion, based on what I have had at other German restaurants and from German butchers. So, I focused on the side dishes this time. I am also someone who enjoys good sauerkraut, and theirs is pretty good -- it is less face-puckeringly sour than some that I have had and had a mild flavor that I think makes it more accessible to people who are not accustomed to the bold style. The späetzle was pretty bland, and the German potato salad was OK, but, again, not as vinegary as I am accustomed to. I noticed a trend with the sides and it was toward the less sour to bland side in general. However, I really enjoyed their red cabbage (blaukraut) side dish. This one is traditionally sweeter and "spicier" than others. Theirs had a sweetness that really worked with the warm spices used in the dish. I remember traditional spices being cinnamon and cloves, but I think there was something else in there that expanded the flavor a bit more, and it definitely had more sugar, less vinegar than many. Service was good and the food came out rather quickly, but the place is showing its age. It is less "shiny and new" than I remember it. Still, the food is good if you don't like vinegar as much as I do and maybe focus on the sausages... and, for a treat, try their blaukraut. read more

Came here for lunch with a friend of mine, we had decided to try it since we were there for an event that was being held outside. We came with a 5 year old and a 1 year old, they didn't have a high chair only booster seats, which was already a bad thing being that I had a baby/toddler with me who I'm used to being able to buckle her in her seat so she doesn't fall etc, I ended up having to hold her the entire time. We ordered our drinks, I asked for a water my son asked for a tea with no ice, he got a tea full of ice and I got a water with no ice... ok so it was starting on a bad path already. We then waited forever for the waiter to come back, finally able to order a pretzel, the pretzel came and again we had to wait forever for him to come and take our order, finally we get our order put in, the wait was forever and with hungry kids it seemed even longer. I ordered the Ruben, my son a chicken parm, and chicken nuggets for the baby. My friend had ordered I forgot what she said it was called but it was like a meatloaf sandwhich, her son chicken nuggets also. They brought her sandwhich and mine, followed by the parm another 5-10 mins we got the cranky hungry kids food. I didn't care for the potato salad, or my Ruben and I love Ruben's... it hardly had any meat at all... I ended up leaving all my food and so did my friend she didn't like hers either. We had to flag someone down just to get our check because we were never checked on again. Overall it was a terrible experience and I try not to leave my first impression on a place I try to give it another go if the experience wasn't so good, but I won't be back. read more

More than most German restaurants we go to. They even have a dedicated section to vegetarian entrees. Much appreciated! Homey is getting a cauliflower schnitzel and spaetzle. My favs! The staff are friendly and helpful. You can call and make reservations. But it doesn't guarantee that time. They won't run anyone out that is already eating. It took about 40 minutes from the time we got here, to get our food. It did take about 10 minutes for the waiter to initially get to our table. But fresh cooked to order food is worth the wait. The cabbage is really sweet. Tastes like there is apple sauce in it. The guys loved the wiener schnitzels. I didn't try the Apple strudel. But the person eating it, said it wasn't one of his favor. Yikes! What happened to this place? We came in around 4:30pm on a Friday night and there was only one other couple dining in the restaurant. We were seated at a table inside and immediately noticed how dirty and unkempt the restaurant was. The ceiling fans were filled with dust, the floors were dirty, the curtains on the window at our table were filthy, there were holes on the table top, the walls were filthy and there were visible dust particles floating around. All of this, on top of the musty odor permeating the air, made me immediately lose my appetite. Nonetheless, we decided to order two drinks and the stuffed mushroom appetizer. The drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and the stuffed mushrooms were bland and didn't taste right, including the weird cream sauce they were floating in. We had intended on eating dinner but after seeing how dirty the restaurant was and how awful the appetizer tasted we decided to just get the check and eat elsewhere. We used to really love this restaurant but it's very obvious things have drastically gone down hill and the restaurant isn't being maintained the way it should be. These served to whet our appetites for our highly anticipated entrees. We decided to try this place because we're so far away from our favorite German place, Edelweiss. We came on a Wednesday around 4:30pm and were seated inside right away. They have a spacious outdoor seating area as well. Our server showed up right away asking if we wanted drinks. He came back with our drinks and asked about an appetizer. We ordered the pretzel. Didn't see our server again until he brought out the pretzel. We had to ask if we could order our entrees. My husband got the Jagerschnitzel. I got the Schweizer Schnitzel. Both came with German fried potatoes (good) and red cabbage (gross). The schnitzel breading was bland and weirdly enough the pork didn't seem to have a ton of flavor. I will say the bites where I could really taste the Swiss cheese in mind were pretty good. Mine was also greasy, which I did not like. Our server did not come back to refill drinks until my husband's had been empty for half of our meal. We also had to get our credit card out and hand it to our server without seeing our bill just to get out in a reasonable time. So overall, food was ok. Service was lackluster. When it arrived he asked for a bun, which the menu indicates can be requested. We were told they did not serve buns, sorry. A little strange.
