The doctors are very knowledgable, kind, and professional. The office has all the latest equipment in diagnosing diseases of the eye which I truly appreciate being that I only have one eye left. Office staff are very nice, friendly, however it took a month before I received my new glasses when it was promised in about a week or 2. I kept calling after 2 weeks. 1st excuse was the lab sent the wrong size. 2nd, after still no results, no excuse. They did apologize, however. I just moved to the area and one of the things I worried about was finding the right optometrist. I went on Yelp to just find the best optometrist in the area before I went on the website for my vision insurance. I saw Hattori Vision was highly rated (great reviews, so thanks) and then I saw I could use my insurance there. It was a little difficult for me to find but that is just because I kept passing the building from the main street (I told you, I was new to the area). Anyways, Dr. Gonzales was the optometrist who assisted me. Dr. Gonzales is the best optometrist I have ever had. Let me put it like this ... I rarely write Yelp reviews. He was conversational, professional, thorough, relatable, and showed a genuine interest in the overall health of my eyes. I was concerned about one of my eyes due to shingles and he reassured through various test that my eyes were perfectly fine. Also they have a great selection of eyewear. I've recently moved into Northern CA and needed to find an Optometrist so I searched on Yelp and found Hattori Vision. Their rating was solid so without hesitation I booked an appointment with them. Honestly, for the first time in my life being seen by a doctor today was by far the best doctor's visit I had. I am a doctor myself and I know that we're always rushed to get patients in and out but I was very impressed by Dr. Gonzales who was my provider today. He was so thorough and knowledgeable. He went step by step in explaining EVERYTHING and showed me pictures and answered all my questions so methodically. The technician/assistant who brought me in before the doctor was also so meticulous herself and friendly. Basically today was the first time I was seen as a patient and did not feel rushed like I was just getting seen quick and out the door. The office is clean and just felt warm and comfortable. I just liked the feel of the office and they have lots of parking spaces which is such a pain to find elsewhere! I had an amazing experience here and glad I came here. My colleagues and even patients have told me that it doesn't matter what you know--what matters is that patients can tell that you care about them and that was what I got out of my experience as a new patient at Hattori. Firstly they are fantastic. Dr. Covey is the best! I went there today with three broken (screws missing) and frame bent on one pair of sunglasses that I did not even purchase from them. Two Gucci's and one pair of Tiffany. The amazing fit/repair gentleman fixed all three pair in ten minutes. I had taken the Gucci's back to Gucci, lens crafters and sunglass hut and they were sorry can't fix them. Then I thought why not try my Optician? Thank you so much! Our job requires reading books and journals, grading bluebook exams and papers, and writing lectures and manuscripts for publication. For more than 40 years I have entrusted my vision care to Hattori Vision Optometry in Monterey, CA. My retinal tears might have led to possible loss of vision had it not been for Dr. Rick's diagnosis and referral for surgical repair. Recently, Dr. Covie Gonzales gave me a thorough eye and refraction exam and showed me the photos taken of my eye structure, explaining the functions of macula, surrounding nerves and signals sent via the optic nerve to the brain that give us sight and visual memory. Dr. Ellie has provided my wife and two children with expert eye care and advice regarding their transition to contact lens. Use to LOVE this practice but no longer. Dr. Barseghian was the best part of your practice and her leaving was bad for you. I'm glad she's opened her own practice in Carmel now, Blink in the Crossroads! I think the way they are handling their long time patients. I've been going there for 20 years and spent literally thousands of dollars there. I chose to follow Dr. Barseghian because she's been my doctor for all of those 20 years. I put in a records request for an appointment I had yesterday. I sent it 3 weeks prior to give plenty of time. Got to my appointment and nothing. Are they so sour grapes about her leaving that they aren't taking care of their patients any longer? She did my exam without any of my 20 years of history and I'm sorry but that's not okay with me. They should have sent my records or frankly they should have allowed her to take her patient's charts with her. All they had to do was document which patients charts were turned over to her and they'd have been done but they are being so hard headed about her leaving that now the staff has to copy every page of her charts and fax or mail them. That's ridiculous! You could have even called and I'd have gladly picked them up. Stop this now and be the professional office you use to be! read more

Saw the other enthusiastic reviews here on Yelp. Gave Hattori a try, and this is another enthusiastic review. Initial information and measurements were taken by a diligent and charming optometric assistant. This included photographing each retina, which was quick and of course entirely painless. The examination itself was done by the very thorough and affable Dr. Gonzales. I was particularly impressed with how he looked at various measurements and then cross-checked them for consistency with other measurements. It turned out that the retinal photos are in 3D, so he was able to move those around to show me different features as he explained what he was seeing. Happily, it was all good news. I didn't get to meet Dr. Hattori. However, I dealt with two receptionists, who were both on the ball and delightful people. read more

BEWARE----If I could give negative 5 stars I would!-Why? Bait and Switch, sleight of hand, lying when asked to go into detail of the charges and benefits coverage or.... just plain having no knowledge of how VSP benefits work. I do not know which is worse. It took 2 hours on the phone- 2 calls to VSP (who also called and spoke to Matt in the office twice), 2 calls back to Hattori myself and it was finally resolved exactly the way I understood it should work in my very first conversation with Matt! My daughter is a student at UCSC and used her VSP vision benefits today for an appointment. This was her first encounter with this provider. We have had VSP for 25 years and 4 members of our family wear glasses so we know how VSP works and have never encountered a problem with any optometrist in all these years until today. My daughter called and asked if the practice was in-network for VSP. They affirmed, yes pulled up her VSP patient record report and confirmed she was eligible for services she requested with a $15 copay. At the end of the exam at checkout they told her her bill was $112. This is where the whole story gets so convoluted that it took 2 hours to resolve. So the contact benefit is separate from the eyeglass benefit. the comprehensive eye exam is fully covered with a $15 copay. The contact exam/materials is a flat $130 benefit for any part of both after a 15% reduction in the standard service charge. The unused portion if any can be used during that annual benefit with any VSP provider. Matt insisted I was completely mistaken and that if she used the contact benefit for the office visit she would ONLY get a $60 benefit, would pay out of pocket for the amount not covered (in this case $52.75) and would forfeit the remaining $70 (of the $130) entirely. I said, "HUH???I have never encountered this in 25 years with VSP. He went on to spin a convoluted story about how the VSP work in spite of me telling him I just got off the phone with the VSP benefits rep. THUMBS WAY WAY DOWN FOR HATTORI Vision Optometry!- read more
