We've been up here both times we were at the Strathallen and enjoyed the cocktail bar. It's relaxed, but nice, and there's a great view of the city. Both times we were in town, it was too cold to sit outside, but there are several outdoor seating areas, including one with a fire pit. The guy likes their bourbon list, and I had a nice glass of wine. Depending on what else is going on at the hotel, it could get kind of loud, but is a fun place to grab a drink. read more

My husband and I stopped into Hatties after dinner at Char Steak and Lounge. It is a very nice cocktail bar, and the views of the city are amazing from the outside balcony. It was a cool night, so we didn't go outside on the balcony. However, I did get a picture of the fire pit just outside of Hatties entrance. The decor is really nice and kind of has shades of a fancy speakeasy.The bartenders were very friendly and told us about event options that Hatties offers. We just stopped in on a lovely summer evening to enjoy the view and to have a drink. I have never eaten here but given the reviews I doubt I will especially for expensive sushi. The bar was not too crowded so we were able to order our drinks quickly and move out onto the balcony which was somewhat full. (A bit later the bar was swamped with a bachelorette party.) Surprisingly there was no event in the big roof top room. This is a great place to bring out of town guests since the view of the city is top notch in a nice atmosphere. And I do like the funky light-up-cubes that adds to the scene. read more

"Meh" comes to mind. I came here at 630pm with girlfriends for drinks. The prices are a little shocking but I was pleased with the pours and the quality of drinks. The male bartender working was very pleasant. The view is second to none with great outdoor seating. Beyond that I don't have many pleasant things to write. Upon arriving there is very poor signage in the hotel directing you where to go. I would have never found the place if my friend didn't arrive before me and gave me directions. Not sure if they don't want an outside crowd? But it certainly comes across that way. Like I said the male bartender was great, he was attentive, pleasant conversation, and remembered drink orders, etc. The other female bartender seemed disinterested and maybe didn't want to break a sweat. Also there were at least 6 staff sitting around at the bar area, but only 2 bartenders. Not sure the purpose the other staff were to serve other than over crowding an already crowded space and distracting an already slow female bartender. It seems odd to be on the clock but taking up seats at the bar when they could be used for paying patrons? My meh review is due to overpriced drinks (didn't try the food) slow and impersonal service, and lack of hospitality by the majority of the staff. If you go, make sure it's a nice night where you can get outside and enjoy the view. Other than that, save your money, go elsewhere. read more

Call me materialistic, but I am a firm believer in the statement "you get what you pay for." Not just in terms of materials and food, but in the essence of ambiance and staff. Hattie's is one of those places that really nails the realm of aesthetics and decor, which I feel is a distraction of what's going onto your plate and into your glass. I came in on a Friday evening and got a comfortable spot at the end of the low seated bar. The chairs are super comfortable if you're lucky enough to claim one on a busy night. The staff are super courteous as usual. Finally able to come in early enough for a meal, I ordered the SFG sushi roll ($21) and a glass of wine. The presentation was as exquisite as their environment. The rice had a nice soft texture, and the lobster on top of it was not super chewy and tasted well cooked. The miso cream sauce, which I mistaken for an Alfredo sauce, was savory and not super salty (whew). Was it mind-blowing? No, but it's still a good meal in it's own right. $21 dollar lesson learned. What's really unfortunate is how limited the space can be when there's a reserved party or event going on. Many times I have come to see 75% of the balcony area roped off, which forces a lot of patrons to bottle necked to the end of the balcony, or to the fireplace (which isn't a very large area either). It feels like the bar was made for the Banquet Room, and not the other way around. I'm glad to see they recently put seating and service behind the bar at balcony area, but you'll still be working with cramped space on a busy night. I was very pleased with my experience overall, but is it worth it's value? That's tricky: If I was charged a $30 Pina Colada at a beach resort in Hawaii, I'm certainly paying for where I am and not necessarily what that drink is made out of. I feel like that's what the gimmick is with this restaurant. I'll keep coming for the cocktails and view, but that's as far as it will go with me. read more

I really want to rate this higher, it's a lovely rooftop bar with a gorgeous view of the Rochester skyline. My bartender made a great cocktail that wasn't even listed on the menu but based on my taste preferences. What I was disappointed by was the food service. We waited about 20-30 minutes after the manager said she would send a waitress over to take our order. She forgot and didn't realize until I asked if we would still be able to order. Service continued to be slow (we had only ordered one sushi roll and it was nearing the end of the night so it wasn't too busy) we probably didn't get out food until after an hour or more of entering the door. However, they made up for the service by apologizing and putting our first round of drinks on the house! ($12 rum margarita/ginger liqueur cocktail and $6 beer) The roll we ordered, the Killer Keller, was One of the cheapest options at $12. It wasn't the best and I probably would not order it again. We chose it because we were just looking for a snack and not trying to spend $30+ on one roll. Overall, prices are high but it's the view and the environment that you're paying for. Service is slow but they are pleasant people. This place has an amazing view. I will say when you go upstairs you are kind of amazed this is in rochester and not NYC or Toronto. The food is really good, the sushi and drinks are amazing but they also come at NYC prices. The SFG which stands for So F*cking Good roll was phenomenal but does come at a price of $25. It's not a massive portion either so you do have to order a few rolls. It's a place to impress but not as much a place to fill up. I liked it for a one time stop but there are equally as good sushi spots in town at a fraction of the price. Overall I would still probably go back on certain occasions for the view and maybe a roll but it's not a go to spot for sushi. read more

5-star view, 4-star bar/cocktail experience, 3-star dining experience. My go-to thus far has been a glass of rosé and admiring the city views at sunset. I'm so glad The Strath opted to do all the remodeling because the space is gorgeous. Hattie's is a little smaller than I expected, but it's intentional so that the wedding/event space is separate from the restaurant/bar. I recommend a reservation if you're coming for dinner because it's always full when I'm there. So far, I've only grabbed an open spot at the bar. Other drinks worth trying are the Moscow mule with sake and the grapefruit/Campari cocktail. You'll get nice views from the bar inside and the balcony lines the west side of the building. It's not as big as I imagined but it's never been so crowded that I couldn't find a spot on the railing to nuzzle in. There are a few high top tables and chairs out there too. Take advantage of the fire pit (exit to the left off the elevators). Although you will miss the sunset, but it's so relaxing lounging in those ADK chairs. For food, I've tried the spicy tuna and kanpachi rolls. The sushi rice was so bland that it detracted from the rest of the roll, especially the salmon one because it was so dense with rice. The pieces were also so large so it made it hard to eat in one bite, but if you didn't do that it got a little messy and everything fell apart on my plate and my lap. Not cute. I did appreciate that the spicy tuna roll wasn't mixed with mayo so it had some burn to it. I am looking forward to trying other food options in the future. But that view will be the thing that keeps me coming back. read more

From the Rochester skyline to the surrounding architectural wonders beyond East avenue, Hattie's is the place to take in these amazing views. The great thing is that it doesn't stop there. The inside is just as beautiful and chic. The staff here is amazing. The hostess was very pleasant..and patient with me. Our server Laura was very personable and attentive keeping our area clean and our drinks full. Oh, and I must also mention that the Thursday evening crew has impeccable taste in music! If you keep playing, I'll keep a'comin'! The food was slightly above mediocre for different reasons. Specially for the price. For apps we got the wings, but I also got 2 oysters for myself. The preparation was off. I couldn't taste their version of mignonette sauce. The oysters were served over crushed ice and some of it got on top, rendering the sauce diluted and non existent T-T However, they were quality bottom feeders and I ate them both. The wings (8) were doused in the most mouth watering and yummy sauce ever. I want this stuff bottled and delivered via monthly subscription to my door! It was zesty, sweet and tangy. Kind of like sweet & sour thai chili sauce but saltier and better. Unfortunately for me, We got 7 drums and 1 flat. This ALWAYS happen to me! I should've mentioned my preference for flats or at least to make sure it's an even count of both when I ordered. I never learn. They were cooked thru and still juicy, but then again, I should've ordered them well done and extra crispy like I prefer them. For sushi we went with the OMAKASE sushi chef's choice plate as we were told would feed 2...and it did. Could feed another person after eating apps and drinking filling beer! We had a hard time getting thru it all. The fish and ingredients quality was top notch. The eel was cooked to perfection and the sashimi and rolls were sturdy. I loved the quality of the tuna used. I'm crying inside just thinking about having another. The sweet shrimp maki was also very good and refreshing. Over all, the ingredients were great. The rice however, wasn't. The grain of rice wasn't the problem, I didn't care for it because it wasn't sushi rice (vinegared/seasoned). Granted, it didn't take away from the yumminess of the fish. But it lacked the 'sushi' taste. This should be a small fix, unless omitting it is their own approach to the cuisine. I will be coming back to Hattie's. read more

Hattie's has been on my list of must visit locations since I moved to Rochester two years ago. Tonight, I was walking by with some friends and we decided to grab a drink. I cannot speak for them, and maybe going on a less busy night would have prevented this situation, but I most certainly will not be back. I've written a fair few reviews, and I generally try very hard to be positive so let me start with some pros before we get to the cons. The restaurant is gorgeous, the rooftop views are stunning, and my drink ended up being free. The issue: I waited at the bar for 25 minutes. I was standing right at the bar, directly in view of both bartenders the entire time, my card out as to be obvious about wanting to order, and making eye contact several times. Both bartenders repeatedly chose to serve other patrons who appeared after I did. Multiple times these other customers were standing next to me. In the time I was waiting, one of the bartenders managed to serve the same group several times still without acknowledging me. While I do not expect to be served immediately on a Saturday night, I do expect better than being blatantly ignored. At some point, one of the people I was with did say something to the bartender about how ridiculous this was getting and his response was rude and dismissive, stating simply that it was busy and that he can only do so much (after which he went and served a third drink to the group previously mentioned and then came back and begrudgingly took my order). It's the weekend. All bars are busy. Yet, I've never had this happen to me anywhere else. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had at a bar in Rochester, and beyond that, it is the worst customer service I have ever received. I appreciated not being charged for the drink, but that does not in any way make up for the way I was treated. It disappoints me greatly that I do not feel comfortable ever returning, when I know how much other people have loved Hattie's. read more

Finally found a note to check this rooftop bar out & wasn't disappointed. The Strathallan did a beautiful job turning their 9th floor into a spacious dining room, but also a cozy bar area. The decor is clean, modern and simple. The drink list isn't overwhelming, it lists 4/5 cocktails, but if you look behind the bar they have any liquor you might have in mind for a drink. Their draft selections was 4 drafts, not much selection but nice to see them supporting the local Genesee brewery with two of their taps. The other 2 taps were seasonal Magic Hat selections. My friends and I ordered the crab fritters, the chicken lettuce wraps and steamed buns. All three were delicious & not over priced. The bartenders were very friendly, as well as all of the support staff. Check this place out! read more

I enjoy coming here because it is one of two rooftop bars/restaurants that Rochester has to offer. The cocktails and food are good but over priced. Even though it is pricey, it is a must see in the ROC because the vibe is like nothing else in the area. The service is okay but not great, be prepared to wait a while for your food. What I like to do is come here before/after dinner, get some drinks and apps or dessert and eat my main entree at Char because the seating is very limited especially when they have private events going on in the larger room. In a nutshell: overpriced, but completely underwhelming food, in a ritzy atmosphere. Really feels like you're just paying a cool tax here. Cocktails were 3.5 stars, but they are $11/pop (and a two hearted beer $7, really?). The real disappointment for me was the sushi and sashimi. Way overpriced and sub-par! The sushi was unimaginative, with sparse fillings, over cooked rice, and the rolls were falling apart. Mine had bacon and immigration crab meat in it... the other ingredients were indiscernible. The sashimi tasted overly fishy, and just off. The edamame our table ordered for an app was a too-small portion. Annoyingly, we never had enough soy sauce to go around for our table of 6. It was in a tiny carafe that we had to ask our server to refill multiple times-- at a sushi restaurant! Doesn't make sense. Also, our server had a snobby attitude toward a vegetarian in our party who requested a roll without bacon. I don't get the hype over this place. Maybe I'll go back in warmer months to check out the rooftop deck... but probably not for dinner again. read more

I made reservations here on a Thursday, for dinner on Friday (the next day), to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. We had been here last year as well, and were looking forward to returning. We arrived to the Strathallan and when we approached the elevator to reach the 9th floor, there was a sign that said that Hattie's and the accompanying restaurant (minus Char) were closed for a wedding. We were shocked and went up to speak with the person at Hattie's desk, only to be turned away by an attendant outside the elevator. It ruined the evening, and we were appalled that we were given a reservation despite a wedding being held that same evening. We were not only embarrassed, but incredibly angry. It was a real shame. It put a very poor taste in our mouths, and I doubt we will be returning to Hattie's again. read more

I absolutely adore Hattie's! I've been here a few times with friends when we're in the mood for something different. What I love about this place is that it's never too busy. It's always the perfect crowd and it's a great atmosphere for close conversation! Hattie's by far has the best view of any bar in the city. With a partial wrap around balcony they are a go to spot for drinks in the summer, overlooking the east end during sunset. It's prime proposal real estate so if you think he's the one... bring him here, make a memory then return with a ring. Their bar is elevated with high back leather lounge chair seating, perfect for a smoking jacket sort of evening. Opposite the bar is a fire pit and smoking area where you can lounge on adirondacks under the stars with a cigar and a whiskey rocks. The staff is attentive crafting custom cocktails to your taste buds desire with the freshest ingredients and the best liquor. Bring a credit card and relax with someone you really vibe with. This is a hard review to write. While everything that we ate at Hattie's was delicious, the experience did not meet our expectations, and information that we learned from our server means their menu and format may soon be changing.... My husband and I ate here for dinner two nights ago - this was for our wedding anniversary. We had been advised to make a reservation - which we did - and that was good because even on a Tuesday night they were packed - every seat at the bar filled and every table/booth filled. (The place is small - maybe 12 seats at the bar, two tables that can seat 4 people and 3 large curved booths that could accommodate maybe up to 5 people.) We had also been encouraged to go on a Tuesday specifically (lucky for us our anniversary fell on that day!) because that is the day they receive their shipment of fresh fish, and they were sure to have everything on the menu, at it's freshest. And, we'd been told that, bar none, they were the best sushi place in Rochester. Now, I should mention that it's been a LONG time since we had sushi, mainly because most places in Rochester serve farmed fish, and I just don't like the idea of it (maybe I've watched too many PBS specials....), so we were really looking forward to this experience. Here's where things went awry: everything we wanted on the sushi/sashimi menu (tuna, salmon and uni), they didn't have. Why? Because they hadn't yet received their shipment of fish. This was 7 pm on a Tuesday night. When we told the server we had come specifically on a Tues to catch the fresh fish, he told us that they have been having trouble getting the fish they want in the time frame they want, and as a result, they are thinking of changing their format to something other than sushi. So..... Instead we ordered the duck confit steamed buns (scrumptious - three buns of the standard size, filled with delicious (but not too greasy) duck and pickled veggies), the scallop ceviche (delicate and delicious - approx two large sea scallops sliced very thin, with some fish roe and avocado slices - the priciest thing we ate at $18 (or $9 per scallop!)), the crispy squid (very crispy, with plenty of rings and tentacles, and a delicious sauce), the seaweed salad (a regular salad of mixed greens with pickled seaweed slices on top - I loved the texture and the fact that this was a different presentation than any other sushi place, but my husband hated it because he expected the 'standard' seaweed salad), and the shishito peppers (a very generous portion of peppers, well seasoned and blistered to perfection). We also had cocktails, and after eating through the dishes, decided to try one bit of sushi to round out the experience - so, we ordered one order (2 pieces) of unagi (eel) nigiri. I am happy to report that the rice was properly seasoned sushi rice (!) and that the eel was delicious.... We also ordered dessert - that night they had a chocolate 'pot-de-creme-style' hard custard with whipped cream - very dense, very rich, and very yummy. Would I eat those dishes again? Yes. Would I go back to Hattie's to eat them? No. Nothing was that special that I feel like I would have to go back there to get it. Also, the night was rainy and foggy, so there was hardly any view from the roof; in winter, I don't think there will be as much allure as there was in summer when the place opened; and service was actually above average - we had a server and his helper, both who identified themselves and were attentive. The only glitch was that they almost forgot to serve us our eel....but everything else was very good. Not sure if I should actually recommend though, as there's no telling if they will have the sushi you want and/or if the menu will match what it is today.... read more

I came across this place staying with my mother on whim . I had my two year old daughter with me and they were more than accommodating allowing me to bring my menu back to room along with food and beverages . My bartender Michael recommended a rye over a bourbon on my old fashion and he was right ! I thought his drink was tasted and well balanced. I did have to ask for a cherry but he was more than accommodating in giving it to me ! And I'm glad I asked it was delicious and not your typical bar cherry . I ordered only one sushi roll and Bc I am a bit of food snob I wanted to be sure the snap pea did not have a heavy vein . They were happy to make sure that there was not one and my roll was very tasty ! The fish and vegetables were fresh crisp and flavorful. I noticed other people had mentioned not a lot of filling ... I would say not so much not enough filling and maybe a little too much rice ... however the rice was flavorful and my daughter enjoyed eating the remanence . The roll was falling apart here and there maybe Bc of the soy paper maybe because of the uneven proportions of rice to filling and tightness of the rolling : again this doesn't kill it for me as I am good with chop sticks and will take good taking food over pretty food. As far as price i suppose maybe slightly over priced by a dollar or two ? But had I been there with friends or for the night rather than just staying at hotel w my daughter and able to enjoy the review and atmosphere I wouldn't have thought twice about it . I am happy to pay more for fresh high quality ingredients. Last note ... I only came here for drinks later at night. The bar was pretty empty, but began to fill up as midnight struck. My Sazeracs were well made and probably a little pricier than what I've paid elsewhere, but knew that going into it. The inside bar area is limited, so if you want to get a drink here I would have to guess you'd have to time it right. Also, with the fantastic view and outside fire pit, I've heard and read it fills up fast. If I had one complaint it would be that during the night Biggie Smalls came over the sound system and the bar tender seemed to get very nervous about it and quickly changed it. My friend and I were happy to hear it come on - surprised actually. And, looking at the group next to us, they gave a little cheer and seemed pleasantly surprised too. However, the song was skipped or the channel changed. I would go back here, but selectively. It has its place in Roc's downtown scene. I'd have given it more stars, but it's not for everybody and that's probably okay with them if you asked. read more

First rooftop place in Rochester I've been to. Hattie's is the top floor of the Strath. It's a Japanese style bistro with a full fledged bar and a rooftop terrace with gorgeous views of downtown Rochester. 5 stars for the views. 4 stars for the cocktails. 3 stars for the service. If you want a good, relaxed night out, this is a great place for it. Bring a date, dress your best and enjoy some wine on the terrace. What it does lack, I feel is a live DJ mixing good tunes out on the terrace to attract more crowd. That would really set the grounds for this place. read more

Service is always a bit slow here which can be annoying especially in such a small place. Sushi is just subpar here. Never seems to blow me away. I left a ton of sushi on my plate which really killed me to do but it was just unimpressive. The rice seemed over cooked and the fish was blah. Much better off going to next door for what your paying. Come here if your not starving and are willing to pay for a few cocktails throughout the meal and you'll leave happy. By far our favorite bar in Rochester. Every time we go to Char we begin the evening at Hattie's. It's such a great atmosphere and pretty view. Not the nicest city skyline view but definitely worth a look. We sat at the bar this time with giant plate glass windows looking out over the city. The bar itself is sunken in so you get eye to eye contact with your bartender instead of them hovering over you. Drink selection is great, both mixed, spirits, wine and sake. We've gotten a few different sushi rolls. The rice is cooked perfectly and has almost a sweet flavor (but in a delicious way). Very very good but a little overpriced for what it is. I tried coming here on a Saturday but it was closed for an event (how can you close a bar on the most popular night of the week?) You won't know they're closed until you show up to the entrance. I came the following Monday just to find out they don't serve food on Sunday's or Monday's (apparently because they can't get fresh fish for their sushi every day - not sure I buy that). The bar was very impressive architecturally and decoratively (unlike the sad, depressing rooms), unfortunately the bar staff was not! As my sister and I arrived (for a cocktail get-together with other friends and family), the main bartender (that night a pretty blonde), and two other staff, literally stood blank-faced, unmoving as we arrived. Not one of the three said a word of welcome nor gave a welcoming smile. The bar overlooks a gorgeous outdoor city view; however, where the bartender stands is sunken so low one feels like an amazon human towering over all who are below it! Really bizarre. As we waited for other guests, we ordered a drink from the still dour-faced bartender. Eventually as our guests arrived and had drinks, we moved to a banquette and ordered the edamame hummus. The hummus was great but was accompanied by maybe 10 pea pods and four limp asparagus. It was really pathetic. We asked for bread or crackers to accompany the hummus several times, but they were never served. Through the entire service, the bartender never once engaged our party in conversation nor gave us a warm smile. She looked miserable. We were the only party until about an hour another party was seated at the banquette next to us. All of our party had left shortly before us, and when my sister and I left we ordered two more drinks. Despite her rudeness, I left the bartender an extra $20 tip aside from anything anyone else might have left her. I hope she was shamed by her behavior because it was really unacceptable. I will never spend another dime for the noisy, sad, dark and dated hotel room. It's too bad because the front staff were VERY welcoming and friendly, especially Tatyana. But the rooms are expensive for something equal to a La Quinta. The Strathallen really needs an update. But I digress. I will never return to Hattie's bar again. read more

This restaurant is lovely. The view of the city is wonderful, especially at night, and the ambiance was very comfortable, perfect date night spot. Parking is at the hotel, so we had no trouble getting a spot. We ordered Seaweed Salad and Duck Confit as appetizers and both were tasty. As a main course we ordered the Maki plate and a Shrimp Roll. The sushi was good, but not spectacular the way we heard. The fried buns were a great dessert though! We'd love to try this place again and branch out with the menu. My only complaint is how small it is. All in all, I would definitely recommend this place! read more

Some people come here for the ambiance, but I come here for the sushi! Other sushi spots in Rochester have been inconsistent in my experience, but the sushi at Hattie's has been fantastic every time I've eaten here. Also, I've eaten here alone and with a friend, and I've received great service every time. The drinks are not as exciting as the sushi. This wouldn't be a huge deal if the price point were lower, but given what Hattie's charges for booze, I need more kick to my cocktails. But as long as the sushi remains excellent and the service remains good, I'll keep coming back. read more

Great view and atmosphere. Kinda wish the bartenders paid a little more attention to us when we needed drinks, to order, questions etc - they talked to each other all night and the female twirled and played with her hair all evening while serving our food. Wish they got my food order right as well. Hey, I have a nervous habit of touching my hair ... but I put it up when I work at my waitressing position. We have better service downstairs!! :-) read more
