Today was the first time we'd tried Hatch. I've heard nothing but rave views from everyone and was very anxious to try it. We were very disappointed. Granted, perhaps we didn't make the right selection. It is not an inexpensive spot for two take out sandwiches with sides . You don't mind if it's worth it. But I ordered a tuna sandwich and when I got home it was all dark meat tuna and not tasty. I don't think I've ordered a $15 tuna sandwich and had the cheapest grade of tuna from a restaurant, maybe ever. My son got a grilled cheese pulled pork sandwich. The pork was cold and flavorless. The bread was barely grilled, and limp from all the guacamole spread. He did not eat it. Like I said maybe we didn't make the best selections, but based on today's experience, we probably would not try it again. read more

We were looking for a quick place to grab lunch and randomly chose this place. Our first visit DEFINITELY won't be our last. We had a turkey bacon avocado and with tomato feta salad, and an heirloom BLT with avocado with Mac and cheese. Everything was amazing. Maybe the best tomato salad I've ever had and the BLT was UNBELIEVABLY DELICIOUS. very little seating, but served in a bad in case you want to bounce. Small but mighty! I had the banh mi and the pickled carrots were delicious. My dining companions had the pulled pork Cubano and the Italian and they looked tasty! There were a lot of vegetarian options and good bread (including gluten free). If you dine in, you will get cozy with your neighbors as there are only seats for maybe 15 people. There were some pretty tasty cookbooks on the shelves too. read more

What a find! This was our first trip to Hickory. Yelp was our source for an eating place, as it is always so reliable. This sandwich shop is using the freshest produce I have ever had on a sandwich. I believe the sliced tomato was a Cherokee purple. My husband got the pulled pork grilled cheese. He enjoyed the depth of flavor the pulled pork had. It had a mild smoke flavor, but the perfect seasoning is what stood out. The cheese was plentiful and oozed out from all sides. The sandwich was still warm so melt in you mouth is just about right! The bread is thick and toasted. It certainly stands up to the heft of the sandwich contents. I had the Special for the day, prime rib. The prime rib was top quality and cooked to perfection for those of us who love rare. A hint of rosemary came at random bites. I prefer this as it does not over power the sandwich. The red onion was the crunch the sandwich needed. The service was friendly and quick. Because of the health concerns there was outdoor seating or take away only. They had tables with umbrellas spaced nicely apart. There was a station with cleaning products that allowed for cleaning before dining. I would go to this sandwich shop every time I'm in town. This place wasn't on my radar until a friend suggested that we go there one day for a late lunch. The food was surprisingly good. I ordered one of their vegetarian sandwiches and I wasn't so sure about it when I read the description, but it was amazing! The only thing I really didn't like about the restaurant is that they don't have enough options for beverages. I literally wanted to go walk to another restaurant to get something basic like a lemonade. I will definitely go back though! read more

This was my first stop on my North Carolina foodie adventure; thanks to my fellow yelpers! The menu is not huge but I had a hard time deciding because everything sounded so good. I finally settled on the Pastrami sub because it was all the things I'd never put on my pastrami! I like pastrami simple: tender juicy meat, mustard, pickles and hot peppers. Hatch makes theirs with spicy mayo, cheese, and tomato; all of which are taboo in my mind. It was delicious! Not overstuffed with pastrami and kind of like a grilled cheese on crack lol. The meat was sliced to order even at the lunch time rush, the cheese was gooey and the bread was warm and crusty. I would never try to replicate it at home but I'd order it over and over again from here! Next time I'd like to try the broccoli and cheese or one of he pulled pork options. read more

Took a little day trip into Hickory today.. cause staring at the walls of my rented condo tend to get rather monotonous after a month. Was completely surprised at the cute area of downtown with all the chairs, tables and rockers that they had set up. It was a gorgeous day... so I figured we grab some lunch and eat it socially distanced from others in that courtyard area. Found Hatch via Yelp and my kiddo agreed to wanting a nice grilled cheese as her choice. For me? Bahn mi with pork. 10 mins, walked over to the corner, bagged and paid.. quick walk back to the yard. The bahn mi was banging.. I always seem to pick the messy food items when I order and in true ugly delicious style, Siracha sauce was appointed in drips all along my t-shirt. Who cares though, right? Not like I'm gonna meet the man of my dreams during a pandemic. The meat was tender and bursting full of flavor. The cilantro fresh and green as ever. The carrots were delicately sliced to provide crunch and the bread was toasted just enough to soak up some siracha, but not be so hard that it took away from the overall essence of the Sammy. Have to say... it was one of the best hot sandwiches I've had in a good while.. so I will definitely be back. Especially if we stay in self isolation for much longer... read more

Oh my goodness if you are anywhere in the south take a turn to Hickory North Carolina if only to eat at Hatch Sandwich bar. They had fabulous gluten-free bread along with regular bread and buns but the sandwich combos are amazing. I've attached a copy of the menu for you to take a look. I am not a vegetarian but I love eating vegetarian when the veggies are great. The chef prepared a vegetarian sandwich that rocked my world. My husband argues that his pork belly BLT was better than mine, he's wrong!!!! The atmosphere is lovely you watch the chef as he works the grill right behind the counter. I love this restaurant because of the distinct dishes they serve and the freshness of their ingredients. There is no other restaurant that I have been to that serves such good quality food that satisfies your appetite. A lot of restaurants that compare in ingredient quality serve small dishes that leave your appetite dissatisfied. The friendly atmosphere is also a plus. Would you drive 45 minutes away just for a sandwich? I would... and I do. My wife and I are constantly finding reasons and things to do in Hickory so we can justify the drive. Honestly, though, the Hatch Sandwich Bar is all the reason we need. A small, but trendy, place with a great menu and decent beer selection. I always just crave a good ole PBR with my sandwiches though. It won a blue ribbon, you can't go wrong. As for my meal/s... The Thanksgiving Turkey: mayo, cranberry, cheddar, bacon, sweet potato is my go-to. I always want to branch out but I fell in love with this one... and HARD. It is a huge step up from the "leftovers sandwiches" that I had to take to school for weeks after Thanksgiving. The cranberry sauce and sweet potato add the perfect mix of sweet to the rest of the savory components, making this just an amazing sandwich to eat. As for sides... The Mac and Cheese is great but their Brussel Sprouts are just stellar. I have tried Brussels every which way a human possibly can because I really want to love them and I can't... Except for the one from Hatch. They have me completely blown away. The first time I went, they were sold out. I just coulnd't believe it. But the next time that I went, they proved to be the best EVER. The vibe - Chill, walk up to order, sit down to eat or get it to go. Quaint, little sandwich shop. Came here based on reviews. Not much seating so get here early for lunch, especially if you have a group of 4 or more. Order process is smooth and painless. Big board with their menu and ingredients, awesome. I got the pork belly Cuban. $7.95. The sandwich was hit off the grill. Great table service. Came with a small bag of chips. The sandwich was delicious but EXTREMELY greasy. Yeah, I know it was pork belly but I ended up with a puddle of grease on my plate. Eat over the plate or it will end up on your shirt, chin and people next to you. Wish thepork belly had been rendered more and fried up crispy. It wasn't crispy at all, couple that with all the grease, that is why it is 4 stars and not 5. Their menu is varied for all tastes, including vegetarian. I will come back and try a different sandwich. You need to come here and give them a try. read more

Really excellent sandwiches! Small and cozy but moves quickly. I come here every few months. I've always thought it was good, but cramped and a bit overrated by the zealous presumably millennial/GenZ raters who consistently make it "the top rated Hickory restaurant". But I went 2 weeks ago for my first visit since it explained into the adjacent space, and I think Hatch has improved in every way. Food was great; I tried the corn salad side, which I think is newer, along with pulled pork and the Brussels sprouts with maple syrup. My son had a sandwich, and it was larger, tastier and neater looking than on past visits. The expanded kitchen space seems to be a big help. It was served on one of those small metal trays which are popular at trendy BBQ places now. Ambience also much better with more indoor and outdoor seating. Service was friendly as always. read more

I have always absolutely loved Hatch. Sandwiches are amazing! And they have such creative vegetarian options. During the pandemic they have gotten even more whimsical with daily creations that will blow your mind. Tonight I had the salmon entree and it was amazing. Unfortunately my kids ate half of it! But that was ok because it gave me an excuse to try their sandwiches too. Favorites on their regular menu: broccoli cheddar melt, any kind of bahn mi, the miso broccoli side dish, and their salad. But be sure to check out their daily specials on Facebook. They often have an heirloom blt on special which is so tasty. The only dish that I haven't enjoyed is their BBQ plate which is subpar for BBQ in my opinion. but at least it provides a low carb option for those wanting that. Love to support hatch! read more
