My husband went into Haslett True Value the morning of June 29, 2020 to buy a few items we needed. We generally prefer to support locally-owned True Value stores over other hardware stores. But after his experience, we will NEVER be shopping at Haslett True Value again. My husband's experience: As I was casually shopping the entire staff starting discussing their views on current events. The men were gathered near the cash register and the one employee asked the other "going shooting today?". Then I believe the manager (see the guy every time I am in there) responded with "depends on who comes in" followed by laughter by the other employees. The tone of the conversation made me stand in the aisle I was shopping in to wait and see if the conversation was going where I thought it might be. The conversation immediately devolved into full-volume hate talk. Casually mentioning their disgust for Mississippi removing the Confederate flag from their state flag. The alleged manager joked "they are the ones that used to whoop them into shape" referring to southern white people keeping southern black people "in shape". This is only part of the conversation. None of this was said in a whisper, it was loudly stated for all to hear, two seconds after the alleged manager asked me if I needed help finding anything (they knew I was in the store and within earshot of their conversation, I was only 2 rows away from the entrance where the men were talking). I guess because I was white they felt comfortable talking in public like they were. I immediately put my supplies back and drove to Home Depot, where I'll be purchasing my hardware from here on out. Our family will no longer be supporting a local business that tolerates the airing of RACIST ideas for the public to hear. This is not the first time racist language has been overheard in this store (see Yelp review from October 22, 2019 below, which describes a customer overhearing employees using the N-word). read more

I always support True Value stores and generally find their staff helpful and not condescending, but I will NEVER EVER give this store my business again. As a parent of adoption, my husband was totally disturbed by the language he overheard an employee using with other patrons. The conversation went like this... "Trump is not racist. It isn't like he calls them niggers or anything...". That is right. He dropped the "n... word" right there. There are so many things wrong with this statement. So, yeah... never again. read more

I've shopped at this True Value a dozen times; usually they have what I need and offer friendly service. Today I stopped in to buy teflon tape, but left empty handed because they wouldn't run a credit card for $1.50 and I didn't have cash. Should I drive another mile to Home Depot? or should I pay the $2.50 ATM service charge down the street? It would just be nice if the "convenient" hardware store down the street would cater to all of its customers, including those that don't carry cash. read more

These guys are the Best! I brought in my spinning wheel which needed repair. The guy there took it apart and fixed it. No charge! They always know what might fix a situation and are so helpful! I don't know of a better hardware store. I'll always go here before Home Depot or the big stores just because their service is awesome! read more

I went to True Value to find a replacement bolt and washer. The individual I dealt with was extremely rude and unapologetic after he lost my original bolt and washer. He went to get the rust off the bolt using a wire brush on a grinding wheel. Common sense would tell you that as soon as the wire brush nicked your hand, you would let go. And that's exactly what happened. Why a hand wire brush wouldn't work in this scenario is beyond me. Both pieces flew into a very disorganized and full workroom. On top of that, from the initial sizing, he discovered that there was no replacement to be found in the store. Why have the rack of sizes if there's no stock?! He searched a short length of time, grew exasperated to the point of telling me "You must be fun to live with." when I wanted my parts back. Throw in a "Goddamit!" and you get the picture. No offer to make good on anything. I will not go there again. read more

We are very thankful for this location near home. It's an older style store with old school knowledgeable employees that are very helpful. My dad (who knows everything) even found them extremely helpful and had some laughs with them. Save your receipt if your not too sure :) read more

I suggest looking for a large friendly gentleman with a handlebar mustache by the name of Chuck- this guy literally is a gome handyman genius. He should have his own reality show. As a female who is not mechanically inclined, I've never felt taken for granted, judged or ignored. Instead, I've been well assisted in my quest and most of the time, it's fun! My questions get answered if I have one, I often learn a handy tidbit or two. My problems are usually solved in a friendly, helpful, prompt, and sometimes humorous fashion. For me, this truly is a neighborhood enterprise and I'm happy to pay a little extra for the extra care and attention I receive. read more

This is the place to rental QUALITY equipment at a FAIR price. We have rented a couple times and each time we were completed satisfied. The employees are very knowledgeable and demonstrate how to use the gear and loaded it into our car. There are no hidden fees or adder fees each time we rented. Each time it's been a excellent experience. Also these past 2 years we have taken our lawn mower blade there to be sharpen. Again, great service and value. We highly recommend this True Value Hardware store in Haslett. It's not far from Okemos and worth the short drive and time. read more

I've always find the staff here to be both courteous, and helpful. On my last occasion I was blown away: I had bought several things for fall clean-up, I got a good deal a huge wheel-barrow, and it is working great, but I bought a super cheap resin handle push broom, and while pushing leaves across my driveway it snapped when I hit my foot with it. I brought it, and my receipt back, thinking I'd buy an upgrade, or a refund, and buy a broom somewhere else, as I wasn't going to get another resin handle given it broke in the first 20 minutes of its service life. The gentleman asked what I wanted, I said I'd pay for an upgrade, or just take my money back. Instead, he went and got a wooden handle with a steel threaded end cap, put it in my broom and wouldn't take any money for the upgrade. They really went above and beyond here, in addition to their normal helpfulness, and knowledge. Great place to do business. read more
