Disclaimer: I was recommended to utilize David Zhang's expertise by a family friend of David. This…read morereview is not on the employee (who was pleasant) but it is on David. I first went to consult David back in March 2022 and he was great. He answered all my tax questions and I was in and out of the office in no time. I thought to myself, great, I just found an amazing accountant in my neighborhood. During that time, I explained to David about my situation and he responded to come back to me when tax season is over and all he has to do is to file a 1040x (to amend my tax return - 1040). (Side note: The issue that I had was that I initially e-filed my taxes. The federal rejected it but the state accepted it. Which is why I went to seek professional services in resolving the problem). So on December 12, 2022 at 1:30pm I went to see David and his office was busy. I told David I did not have an appointment and I asked, "should I make an appointment"? He decided to hear me out at first but then he passed my case to one of his employees. The employee explained to me that since I did not file my taxes 2020 taxes with them, there is nothing that they can do and I would have to come back during tax season. I tried to explain to them what David told me back in April (to come back after tax season) and David told his employee in Chinese "just ignore him, he is too annoying". Yup, just because someone doesn't speak the language, doesn't mean the person does not understand. The funny thing is that, just over the weekend, the same family friend asked me how was my experience with David because she wanted to file her taxes with him for the upcoming year. I raved about how great he was the first time around but after this experience, it got me to think: if a family friend doesn't even use your service in the first place, it is extremely telling of your professional demeanor or the lack thereof. This review will probably not affect the business but if you are looking for a tax accountant in Elmhurst, stay far away from this place.

Somehow, every year, I think I'll tackle my taxes on my own, but we often find ourselves with a…read morecomplex situation (multiple states of residency/employment, home sale, etc.), and I end up deciding that it's better for me to pay someone else to do it than labor for hours on my own and risk getting it wrong. That said, I'm always a little hesitant to outsource this task since it can be pricey, and a lot of tax services I've used in the past take FOREVER to respond and/or don't instill trust in their responses (lack of detail, generic answers, lack of understanding of non-standard situations, etc.). With this background/experience, I can definitely say that John is hands down the most detail-oriented, thorough and straightforward tax expert I've worked with (and I've probably worked with 3-5 others in the past). He responds quickly and is a great written communicator (I always understand from his emails exactly how to handle something or the directions to follow.) His fees are very reasonable given his expertise and service, and I highly recommend him, especially for people who live in Jersey City (woo hoo!) and work in NYC, as that can raise complexities.

We ultimately told him we wanted our money back because he hadn't provided any service, didn't answer any communication and didn't file our taxes, he originally agreed but offered one call. Jonathan was late for our call which lasted only 5 minutes during which he only confirmed that the research we did (since he wasn't answering our questions before) was accurate. We were still not satisfied as no advice of any kind was provided, only an excel spreadsheet that looks likes a bad version of TurboTax from 2 decades ago, Jonathan then changed his mind and offered to reimburse only 50% of our payment knowing that no service was still provided at this time other than 5 minutes over the phone to confirm a couple of accounting points we already researched for. He obviously stopped responding and we had to dispute the charge. Long story short: a dishonest thief
