I looove Japanese food! But, it is difficult to get my fix when most of my my fave Japanese restaurants are in Makati. That is why I so happy that there is Haru! Haru is cozy & I love that I don't have to rush myself to eat my meal here. My #1 favorite dish is their Uni Donburi. Look at the picture; ALL that Uni for only Php270 (6USD)! They also have a wide selection of sushi, sashimi & platters. Great for a chill night our with friends or just by yourself :)

When it comes to quality Japanese food in the Kapitolyo area, Haru should be the go-to restaurant for everyone. Situated beside Cafe Juanita (they are both owned by the same people), Haru is a charming converted house that has been decorated extensively with traditional and kitschy decor from Japan. From the selection of manga (Japanese comics), old toys, kimono mannequins and decorative tea sets, the passion behind Haru is immediately evident. Aside from the decor, the passion behind serving quality Japanese food at Haru shines through in the food, as it should. Known for their exceptional quality sushi and sashimi, Haru has always gone above and beyond. Their salmon sashimi is always a good standby, but their Dynamite Rolls are worth a mention. The large serving portions of each maki make it difficult to consume in one bite (as Japanese sushi-eating customs adhere to), but that makes it better for us to savor the flavor of the spicy tuna, salmon, slivers of cucumber, all coated in sushi rice and a sprinkling of tobikko (roe). Haru also gets special mentions in my book due to the fact that they serve natto, fermented soybeans that can best be described as an acquired taste for many. Due to its taste, it's not often served at most Japanese restaurants, but it's served here! Haru also shares a dessert menu with Cafe Juanita, since they are owned by the same people. I recommend their Creme Brulee, which is presented in a tiny little ceramic pan that resembles a bread pan. 5 stars for Haru!

Honestly, Haru wouldn't be out of place in Makati's Little Tokyo. From the old Japanese house interiors and random Japanese decor scattered around the place (yes those are kimono mannequins) to the extensive menu written in both Japanese & English, this place screams authentic! I feel like it's on the same plane as the likes of Sugi and Kimpura, but much cheaper. The sushi & maki, as you would expect, are very fresh and served in a wide number of variations. So are the sashimi! You see combinations you don't see anywhere else. The spicy tuna sashimi salad though is a lot like the one in Izakaya Kikufuji and quite as good! Also, given that their sushi and sashimi are excellent, you can fall in love with their top notch chirashidon bowls that don't all come as a mix of toppings-- you can get only salmon, tuna, or sea urchin toppings too. All are served with soup on the side. Other classic Japanese dishes like the yaki or grilled dishes, teppans, and tempuras are all there as well. As are your Japanese soba, udon, and ramen dishes. The meat teppans and the "Kari Kari Kari Yaki" oyster dish are standouts! It's pretty much a complete Japanese menu here at Haru-- a good spot for a full Japanese cuisine crash course, trying everything out at once, and then leaving plenty satisfied.

Haru's décor and food are almost equal in greatness. When I first entered Haru I was in awe with their uniquely Japanese interior design and their colorful and festive displays were inviting and beautiful. But their food was even better. Haru serves authentic Japanese dishes and sushi. Everything about the food in Haru is great. Each type of sushi is made to order and you can really tell by its taste that it's made with the freshest ingredients possible which is essential for any Japanese restaurant to be considered as a good one. Haru also serves classics like tepan, tempura, teriyaki, and the like in both to share options or if you're dining solo you can try their rice bowls. Haru has definitely become the go-to Japanese restaurant for me and my family. And in recent months it has become incredibly popular (for good reason) so it's best to reserve a table in advance

Look at that generous amount of roe!

My meetings take me everywhere and one night, it took me to Haru. To start, my client got a selection of sushi, sashimi and maki, which we all got a few pieces each. I was impressed by the freshness of the fish and the overall quality of each piece. Even just by looking at it, one could already tell that they use topnotch quality ingredients and that the sushi maker takes pride in his craft. Next, we shared an order of sukiyaki, which I also found delicious. The beef was really good and soft, just a good amount of vegetables and noodles. The broth was also tasty without being too salty or strong. Lastly, because I knew they had ordered so many items already, I just had their zaru soba - cold Japanese noodles with dipping sauce. What impressed me most was that they really do it as proper Japanese restaurants do - with the noodles really cold (and not just place on top of ice), then serve it with the dipping sauce that has raw quail egg, which other restaurants don't have.

This time the visit was with my parents, my brother, my husband and me. We were served with delicious complimentary tofu with a great-tasting sauce. My brother ordered the aji tataki for us to start off and it's been a while since I've had this. Beautifully done and very tasty! My brother got the chirashi bowl. My husband and I shared the Gindara kaku bento - grilled cod fish, salad, salmon and tuna sashimi, tempura, miso soup with clams and mango ice cream. For dessert, fruits was the other option. My brother also ordered several chawanmushi for us to share. My parents shared the Nigiri kaku bento. There was so much food. The one down side was the fish in my parents' bento box was a bit tough, unlike the gindara that we had. I would probably recommend the Gindara kaku bento between the 2 bento boxes. We also had this soup that came in a small teapot. I had missed jotting down the name but you drink the soup from a miniature teacup. Glad we didn't order more food because there was already lots of food! Highly recommend!

But your perception may vary, as my reviews are mostly from the southern region of Metro Manila. FOOD 5.0 Nama Uni Sashimi (420 PHP) Sea Urchin or sea hedgehogs are those spikey things that I always think about avoiding when going to the beach But, I love them on my plate, It is very sweet and delicate, and it tastes like the sea smells, with a soft, almost creamy texture. A 3-step process starts with a piece of Nori (seaweed wrap), then a slice of cucumber, a hefty plump of uni on top, close it off and surprise your mouth with a taste of the sea. Tofu Gratin (395 PHP) Shrimp flavoured white sauce that's smothered with cheese and lots of it. The gooey feels were just too strong and I couldn't but scrape the pan clean. Every spoonful is a renewed experience, so it doesn't get boring. Assorted Sushi (720 PHP) Their hot dishes overwhelmed our taste buds with clean flavours, which led us to unintentionally ignore this initially. Sushi pieces that are above average in size and offer a refreshing taste. Beef Sukiyaki Iron Hot Pot (530 PHP) Beef Sukiyaki that's filled with a rich broth flavoured by the tender smoked beef. This is a dish to remember and one of the items I will recall and recommend. Tonpei Yaki (430 PHP) A Japanese style Frittata topped with extremely thin slice pork that wiggles from displaced air around it. It looked alive upon my first glance. You'd be wrong to think that these paper thin slices of pork wont satisfy, because flavour is not in volumes, but in density. These melt in your mouth and just release flavour that you'd usually encounter in chunky portions of pork. I for one enjoyed less weight and more flavour. The frittata underneath is fairly standard. SERVICE 4.5 Waiters take pride in the food they serve, we were even prompted to taste the Tofu Gratin first as it's tastiest when hot. They're informative when guiding you through the menu and suggest based on your taste and not the most expensive like in other places. AMBIANCE 4.5 I love places that impress on ambiance and Mangetsu surely did. High ceilings and even a second floor for private functions, this place is well decorated and spacious. Air-conditioning is centralised, which means an evenly cooled environment.
