What is this sorcery!!! So goood!

This is my go to place in the PI. I love their chicken katsu curry. To simplify: 5 for atmosphere 5 for food flavor and selection 5 for customer service We come here so often, these guys know us like their family. Definitely a must try for any Philippines goers.

    EVERY BITE.

Drop what you're doing, and go to Yabu - right now. My boo and I spend about P600 (total), for a very satiating dinner. They're consistent every time we go. Environment: - Weekends are ALWAYS packed. Come during an off-hour like 2PM or 4PM if you want to be seated right away - Clean bathrooms WITH toilet paper (I know!) Food: - BOMB.com - my personal favorite: Chicken Special Katsudon (spend the extra P40 on the layu sauce, treat cho'self). It has a sweet flavor that mixes well with the chicken. - chicken curry: don't try to get too confident with the level of spice! you will be lit for the entire night. - Unlimited cabbage, soup and hot green tea! This meal is very #sulit. Service: - LOVE LOVE LOVE the staff here! They are awesome. They remember our name, our orders, always greet us with a smile, and are very attentive. Huge reason why we keep coming back. - The manager, Andrew always makes sure we're well taken care of!

I had a Yabu phase, whenever my parents or a friend would ask me where I wanted to eat, I'd say Yabu without thinking, and I'm still not sick of it. Manila had a katsu obsession a couple of years back and hundreds of local and international chains sprouted everywhere, but I think Yabu's tenderloin or loin is still the reigning champion. The first time I tried it I couldn't get over how tender the meat was. Even though I ordered the loin (which was layered with a beautiful strip of fat) it was so tender and crunchy, I think I cried a little. Although it gets quite annoyingly full during peak meal times, a trip to yabu is always worth the noise and crowds. So if you're up for a cheat-day or you're just always into pigging out (like I am), Yabu is always the best place to go for their unlimited rice, soup, salads, fruits and of course, katsu.

    Mmm.

All my friends know that I don't eat pork, but with Yabu around, it's getting difficult not to. Whenever we have the chance, my mom and I usually choose to eat here. We usually order a chicken salad to start us off. And depending on how hungry we are, we either order just one to share or one each. For my main course, I usually get the 100 g Hire (Pork Tenderloin). But sometimes, I do feel a little adventurous and try other things. Their Katsudon set is a big serving but it's probably the best Katsudon I've ever tasted. Their Katsu curry tastes almost exactly like the ones in Japan. But make sure to have a lot of cabbage with you, the curry is quite a big serving that you'll need something to balance out that taste. Speaking of which, I love trying out their different sauces for the cabbage. It's very light and refreshing and pairs perfectly with any of their katsudons.

I never really understood the general appreciation for katsu. There was nothing special about it for me. I had always likened it to bleh ole pork chop and dishes similar to it. A couple of years ago, when katsu first became a thing, I had been taken to a popular restaurant called Yabu, where I discovered that katsu is a meal that is part-food and part-experience. Yabu is a hustle and bustle kind of sit down place. Black cushions, tanned wood accents, servers all in black, and street style art in the bathrooms. It sounds a little rebellious now that I think about it, but it's really just a place to sink in your seat, mute out the noise, and enjoy your food. Prices are standard; servings are crazy big if you consider that you get an unlimited serving of soup, salad, and rice; the food is always worth the trip; and the servers are very nice and accommodating. It is because of Yabu that I've been made a katsu convert.

Fried food tastes good all the time, but this spot does it right. The flavor, texture, moist factor, and light feeling make the food so much more enjoyable even though it's fried! Hands down one of the best katsu spots to try and my #1 up to now. Hire Kurobuta is incredible. Try this if you are in Manila. #HaveAFoodOne

The cheese put up a fight after every bite, not letting go of the katsu like it had a life that depended on it, if that makes any sense.

The store has good ambiance and a good Japanese feel. When you enter, a sushi bar greets you. Just by looking at the menu alone, you will notice that it is a no-frills, authentic Japanese restaurant. We had most of everything on their menu: - Green Salad - your favorite greens with carrots on a roasted sesame dressing. Normal but not overpowering. - Ebi Tempura - Crunchy but the breading is too thick and bread-y at the same time. - Yaki Soba - right balance of sourness and sweetness. Good for sharing. - Unagi Don - love the rice as they use real short grain rice. The eel is enough for the rice. - Chicken Teriyaki Don - rice is good. Chicken has good flavor but quite dry. - Chicken Katsu - tender and doesn't have sharp breading. - Uni Tempura - takes awhile to serve but serving of uni is generous. - Salmon Sashimi - a bit too frozen for me. Overall, a good place to dine with friends especially if you are craving for good Japanese food. A bit pricey, but pays for quality. Service is impeccable.

No wonder this is also the favorite restaurant of our dear President. Says a lot about his taste in food! While I usually frequent their Pasay Road branch (where President Aquino usually dines), I find this branch a lot bigger and perhaps a lot cleaner. The food is practically the same so I find myself eating more frequently here. However, I was quite shocked to find out about the jacked up prices of my favorite eel set meal. While I do understand how difficult and expensive it must be to get a hold of and cook eel, one bite of this dish and the price is always worth it. There is perhaps no other restaurant that offers eels as yummy as this. Thanks to President Aquino for the reco!

Until I came across Nihonbashitei, this bummed me out because I couldn't find a place in the metro that served it. If you're an adventurous eater looking for new Japanese dishes to try, you're going to love this place. So when you finally do come across a restaurant that's very authentic, you take note of it and such a place is Ogawa. It's right here in Bonafacio Global City (BGC). Their vast menu is quite impressive and the sashimi was super fresh and they had two types of sea urchin (local and from Japanese waters). We had both and by far, the imported uni from Japan was much better in texture and taste. I also enjoyed the nigiri set and I haven't had toro (fatty tuna) in soooo long, I'm glad that I splurged and had that too. That was incredibly soft and fatty. We had a party of 6, and we were able to reserve a private room, that was special. There's a big pahking lot and that's uncommon. I would definitely come back here again for a real deal, Japanese meal. Arigato Ogawa!!

So, we decided to have another try at a birthday dinner a few weeks later and came to this amazing restaurant. The first thing we always look at when we come to a teppan place is how they care for their grill, and Teppan Okochi keeps their grills spotless. We knew we were in for some well-prepared food. As an American, I am used to the circus atmosphere at teppan restaurants - you know, the onion volcanos, spatula flipping, etc. This is not that sort of teppan place. This is elegance and grace. The food here will typically set you back a few hundred bills, depending on your particular culinary selection. The particular spread in our pictures amounted to considerably more than that. But it was most definitely worth it! The service is on point, and the food is beautifully prepared and absolutely heavenly to the taste. My favorite items we chose were the wagyu beef, the garlic fried rice, and the strawberries. We ordered a tray of the strawberries to take home, in fact. My husband adored the sashimi, the crab, and the wagyu. What was quite charming was that the waitstaff presented us with some complimentary gifts of sweets before we left. My husband was quite happy with this birthday dinner experience.

Now, comparably speaking, I would have to say one of the better sushi places I've been to. I stumbled upon this place on yelp as I happened to go to another Japanese restaurant that was closed partially because I didn't look for their hours before going and partially because their hours we not listed on yelp yet, boo. What I did stumble upon was a photo... of Foie Gras sushi, which 1) I heart Foie Gras and 2) was reminiscent of my time in Hawaii when I was able to enjoy foie gras sushi my first time ever. Soooooo Off We GO to the new Sensei Sushi! Quite possibly one of the better decisions we will make this weekend in regards to cuisine. Service was good, but I did notice a drop off as the place got more and more busy with customers. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The server kept recommending things, which was good and bad, as in my opinion if I wanted some recommendations, I would simply ask and I've been to more than my share of sushi joints and usually know what to order. Nonetheless, overall very helpful. As for the food. One word, Yummy comes to mind, delicious, tasty, fresh-er than most places. OK, that's 7. I usually don't order cooked food at a sushi place, so my review is a mix of their raw and cooked menu. Seared Chutoro Sushi: Well prepared, well cut, not the absolute best part of the tuna belly compared to Otoro, but certainly a delicious treat! Chutoro Sushi: same as above, delicious, very satisfying for those who love that fatty goodness tuna belly has to offer. Foie gras Sushi: great cut, larger than most places I've had this similar dish. Seared perfectly, in my opinion. NOT burnt like most places here in the PH that over sear their foie gras, including Antonio's. MUST TRY! Amaebi: Looked and tasted very fresh. Color was gorgeous and sweet as it should be. Not too much wasabi to spoil it, perfectly balanced in my opinion. Oh! and they deep fry the heads so they can be eaten! Proper! Japanese Uni Sashimi: Color was much better than almost every place I've been in the PH. Looked and tasted fresh-er than most, there was 1 small brownish piece at the bottom, but overlooked it because at most other places, all the pieces are brown. Snaps for the nice yellow Uni to Sensei Sushi! Color wasn't eye popping yellow as it would be when super fresh, yet I'll take it over so many others in Metro Manila. Fish Tacos: Actually quite scrumptious. I wasn't prepared to have good fish tacos, but I saw them on the menu and couldn't resist. They were delicious. Ikura Sushi: A bit disappointed, color was a bit dark and wasn't super fresh, however, that's simply an opinion. I DO KNOW, there are many different grades of ikura, I'm just used to the bright orange color with more of a traditional salted caviar taste, this one just tasted like there was something else I wasn't familiar with. Seared Salmon Belly Suhsi: Another treat I was not expecting. I wasn't expecting a salmon belly so fatty similarly to their chutoro. Overall, very good. Tuna Dynamite Roll: For a roll, quite good. A nice filler, taste was on point with what you would expect in a more than decent roll. I forget the name of the last dish: it was thin strips of beef with chopped foie gras and uni. Quite honestly my first attempt at this dish was head on, meat, foie gras, uni. So sorry not quite what I had expected. THEN however, I deconstructed it, Uni by itself, which the uni on this dish we're I think local, was a bit fishy. BUT then, the foie gras and steak alone, darn it if that wasn't reminiscent to a filet topped with seared foie gras from Central Park Bistro in San Francisco! All that was missing was a perfectly balanced '12 Opus One red to cap it off. Overall: with the exceptions above... I will be back for more! A la cuisine! Stay Hungry My Friends
