This Japanese restaurant joins the big leagues such, as Seryna, Izakaya Kikufuji, Umu at Dusit, and many more. But your perception may vary, as my reviews are mostly from the southern region of Metro Manila. FOOD 5.0 Nama Uni Sashimi (420 PHP) Sea Urchin or sea hedgehogs are those spikey things that I always think about avoiding when going to the beach But, I love them on my plate, It is very sweet and delicate, and it tastes like the sea smells, with a soft, almost creamy texture. A 3-step process starts with a piece of Nori (seaweed wrap), then a slice of cucumber, a hefty plump of uni on top, close it off and surprise your mouth with a taste of the sea. Tofu Gratin (395 PHP) Shrimp flavoured white sauce that's smothered with cheese and lots of it. The gooey feels were just too strong and I couldn't but scrape the pan clean. Every spoonful is a renewed experience, so it doesn't get boring. Assorted Sushi (720 PHP) Their hot dishes overwhelmed our taste buds with clean flavours, which led us to unintentionally ignore this initially. Sushi pieces that are above average in size and offer a refreshing taste. Beef Sukiyaki Iron Hot Pot (530 PHP) Beef Sukiyaki that's filled with a rich broth flavoured by the tender smoked beef. This is a dish to remember and one of the items I will recall and recommend. Tonpei Yaki (430 PHP) A Japanese style Frittata topped with extremely thin slice pork that wiggles from displaced air around it. It looked alive upon my first glance. You'd be wrong to think that these paper thin slices of pork wont satisfy, because flavour is not in volumes, but in density. These melt in your mouth and just release flavour that you'd usually encounter in chunky portions of pork. I for one enjoyed less weight and more flavour. The frittata underneath is fairly standard. SERVICE 4.5 Waiters take pride in the food they serve, we were even prompted to taste the Tofu Gratin first as it's tastiest when hot. They're informative when guiding you through the menu and suggest based on your taste and not the most expensive like in other places. AMBIANCE 4.5 I love places that impress on ambiance and Mangetsu surely did. High ceilings and even a second floor for private functions, this place is well decorated and spacious. Mangetsu stands out as a unique Japanese restaurant, as it moves away from many of the traditional Japanese sushi restaurants, and instead, also serves a refreshing variety other Japanese dishes. Of course, you order sashimi and sushi here, but I would highly recommend going out of your comfort zone and try something new such as the Beef & Eggplant in Red Miso, butterfish, or the Kimchi Beef. If you are in the mood to flavor the many exciting tastes that the Japanese kitchen offers, this is the place to go. Mangetsu was one of those restaurants that remained in my list of "places I must eat in" for the longest time because nobody really ventures out to that part of Jupiter anymore. I saw it in someone's blog or an instagram post, and I knew I had to try it for myself. It was a special day when I got to try Mangetsu because I was finally going to check it off my list and also literally because it was a celebration of sorts. I knew the restaurant was going to be good the moment I entered because I saw a couple of tables with Japanese people, and some sitting in the bar (definite sign of legitimate Japanese food). Since it was just a treat, I did not order much of my own things and just settled with what on the table... ...If that was what you call "just settling" then I would love to settle all the time! Everything ordered exceeded my expectations, and more. I loved the Chicken Karaage with its different colored seasonings, their fresh slipper Uni, Spicy tuna Rolls, and I can go on and on. One of the downsides of being pregnant is not being able to eat sushi and sashimi from Mangetsu (because pregnant women are advised not to eat anything raw). Mangetsu is my go-to place for sushi and sashimi. In the many times that I've been there, never have I tasted or smelled anything fishy or "malansa." Their seafood is fresh and their servings are generous. Their menu is quite extensive, so one can easily get overwhelmed with the choices here, but their staff are very accommodating of any questions you may have to help you decide on your order. They also have the Lunch Set Menu which makes it a bit easier to order since you can get a mix of several dishes in one set. My absolute favorite dish here is their Sashimi sampler set from the Lunch Set Menu. It comes with 3 bowls of sushi rice, with 1 bowl each of salmon, tuna and uni. The set also comes with a side of Japanese salad, miso soup and their appetizer for the day. It is actually quite a lot for one person to finish, unless you're really hungry, so I usually share this with my companion. I've also tried their other dishes, such as their tempura and their rice bowls, all of which were also very good. But as I said, I mainly go here for their sushi. Check them out along Jupiter street and try to go during lunch for their lunch set menu. You'll also notice that there are a lot of Japanese businessmen who dine here during this time (and that's a good sign!) I promise, it won't disappoint you! This is DTI Secretary Greg Domingo's favorite restaurant, and the fact that it's situated just behind the DTI office means that he takes potential investors, ambassadors, politicians, and other important people there for working lunches or dinners. Sometimes, people from our office are asked to join these working meals. I've eaten here several times with foreign investors since it is one of the most convenient places for great Japanese food in the area. And boy, their food is great. What I love most about Mangetsu are their special lunch menus, which change every week. The best part about these lunch menus is that every meal costs around Php500.xx, and there's more than enough bang for your buck in the combo, since each order comes in a tray-ful of dishes designed to make the foodie in you cry with happiness. This place is pretty good overall when it comes to Japanese food but I would really only go here if Kikufuji or Sernya weren't around. The sashimi, chicken, sukiyaki (although a bit too fatty), and tempura are all good. In fact the tempura is the best I've had in all the Japanese restaurants in Makati. The shrimps are huge and it's served with salt which, I think, is how tempura is traditionally served. Try it out for yourself! The ambience is nice and wholesome. It looks like a typical modern Japanese restaurant. A lot of families eat here so expect that type of environment. Service is alright and presentation is good. There are a lot of Japanese restaurants in Manila, but there aren't a lot of Japanese fusion restaurants. I've always been skeptical about trying fusion restaurants because more often than not, most restaurants execute dishes badly. Luckily I discovered Mangetsu, it's this Japanese fusion restaurant along Jupiter Street. Dishes have influences both Western and other Asian countries. To experience this, you really have to go out of your comfort zone and order unique dishes. You can start off this food adventure by trying the Marinated Sashimi with Wasabi Sea Urchin Sauce (okay, this is not so "fusionized" yet). The freshness of the sashimi combined the textured taste of the sea urchin can hype up your eating experience (in a good way of course). Get a plate of Tofu Cheese Gratin if you're a cheese lover. The hot plate gets to you and you see a pool of baked cheese on top of the tofu in the middle. Get ready to attack! Get this tofu alongside an order of Beef Yakiniku. Make sure you drizzle the two special sauces that come with this dish. Don't forget! You have to get your fill of the Uji Matcha Ice Cream. It's Vanilla ice cream with red bean paste and green tea syrup. It's so good you might want to order another glass of it! read more
