    Beef Japchae
    Kathy L.

Today hubs and went for takeout. I called and ordered beef bibimbap and beef japchae. I went inside to pick up the food and the restaurant was warm. After all the cold weather the past few days it was welcoming to walk into a warm restaurant. The beef bibimbap had seasoned beef, spicy radish, zucchini matchsticks, carrot matchsticks, soybean sprouts and a fried egg all on top of white rice. The beef was seasoned well. The vegetables with the exception of the spicy radish were cooked and crisp to the bite. This meal was 5/5. The beef japchae noodles were perfectly cooked and seasoned well. There were carrot matchsticks, cabbage, sesame seeds and scallions. This dish was great and 5/5. The ban chan, my favorite part of the meal, was very spicy today. Spicy potatoes, kimchi, spicy cucumbers, spicy fish cakes and soybean sprouts. 5/5!!! If you like Korean food, please take a trip to Madison and give Haru a try. They have the BEST ban chan of all the Korean restaurants in Madison County in my opinion. : )

Spicy short rib bento box and kimchi pancake.

I went here for the first time on Friday for a lunch meeting. I was so impressed by the food that the next day I drove 30 minutes just to have lunch at the same place. The first time I got a spicy bulgogi lunch box and today I switched the protein. Highly recommend giving this place a try.

The dumplings are very good the sauce puts them over the edge!

Haru is a terrific addition to Huntsville/Madison's growing list of awesome eateries. The menu isn't to complex for the rookie Korean diner, it's got good descriptions. All the common dishes are on the menu and you can't make a bad choice. The cool part is the side dish bonanza. You get a bunch of Korean tasty treats with nearly every meal. Combine these items with you entree and you'll be glad you were so adventurous.

Unfortunately only open for lunch, but highly recommend. Service is very cordial and responsive and family owned environment. My first time here but the food was absolutely delicious. Nice selection of ban chan and nice to have some japchae on the side. Prices were very reasonable. Nice to have a family meal here or just to stop by solo for lunch. This is my favorite restaurant in Madison.

Different type of kimichi to go

This amazing restaurant is my definite go to spot from now on. This is family owned and ran, and the food is top notch. I did a little research regarding this place, and apparently Ian Kim and his mother Koung Kim opened this lovely establishment after running a food truck in Huntsville for some years. I met Ian today when I picked up my meal, and this cozy restaurant is just perfection. There is roughly 10 tables inside, so I would imagine this place fills up quickly. The decor is extremely pleasant and the kitchen is pretty open. I really enjoyed this tiny treasure. I ordered the Jap Chae to go with came with 4 different types of kimchi as well. This was seriously some of the best Jap Chae i have ever experienced. The noodles were cooked to perfection and had an amazing taste. The beef had an amazing flavor as well. The additional veggies had just the right texture. The kimchi was delicious as well. The cucumber is my favorite, and the radish was thick chunks almost, which was different for me but absolutely delicious. I didn't exactly care for the sprouts, but the cabbage was delicious as well. The to go order was called in right at 11, and by the time of pick up Ian had it waiting for me at the counter. I am so beyond glad there is a nearby Korean place that I can order out for lunch or dine in at. It is super authentic, and i just adore the family business. I really cannot wait to bring my friends and family here!

Haru is the ONLY Korean restaurant I go to here in Huntsville. The servers and staff have only been friendly and kind to me, and the food has never disappointed. Their food is always served fresh. Their banchan is always perfect. I have never once had a complaint about both the service and the food at Haru. I would absolutely recommend this place to friends, and I always make sure to take my friends here when they're in town. 10/10 I Haru

We were promptly seated and had our drink orders taken (they serve Coke products and alcohol; no Coke Zero sadly). The menu was pretty large but they don't offer a lunch portion on weekends which was unfortunate but fine. The adult meals came with 2 sides and miso soup, kids meals featured one side and miso soup. I ordered Beef Bulgogi with cabbage kimchi and cucumber kimchi, wife ordered Pork Belly with bean sprouts and fish cakes, kids ordered Beef Bulgogi Fried Rice and Chicken Frid Rice both with Japchae noodles. The miso soup was a little disappointing - the soup cup was filled a third of the way up and only had a few slivers of green onion; no tofu or seaweed or anything else. It was the smallest, saddest miso soup I have tried. Sides were brought out before the test of the meal -- save them for when the food comes out, you will need them to cleanse your palate and break up the meat overload. Sides were pretty good. The main course was served and the food looked beautiful! Unfortunately the food was very bland. The pork belly lacked salt (don't ask me how this is possible) though the onions they came with were nice. The beef Bulgogi was pretty bad, had flavor but seemed dry and it was just a pile of meat that got old quickly. Not a lot of complex flavors. My youngest kid's chicken fried rice was bad -- the chicken was extremely dry and lacked flavoring. She loved it; but she also doesnt want to use ketchup or any sort of flavoring on her meat usually so that tells you the flavor profile here. The waitresses we had we both very nice, but they weren't attentive. My glass of water was low and I got no refill - no one at my table was ever asked if they wanted something else to drink. One of my daughters used the rest room and complained that the floor of the women's restroom had a lot of water on it. She siad when she say down on the toilet water squirted out from around thr seal and when she stood up it sucked back in. She specifically asked me to mention it and and she's 11 years old and never complains about bathrooms so that was weird. Food cost $72 after taxes for 2 adult meals, 2 kid meals, 3 drinks and no apps or booze. Not worth it. If you think the food looks good, its post production. I really hate to rank this place so low but the wife and a I both agreed that it's a solid 2 stars and that we wouldn't return here. I enjoyed most of the other korean restaurants around town and have traveled quite a bit internationally and across the US for context; this place was not good. If you do want to try it out, I'd advise eating it family style where everyone shares several dishes. Sorry!

The beef bulgogi that I cooked was okay... I've had better elsewhere, but maybe that's because I'm not a very good cook and may have grilled it too long. The lemon chicken was also ok, but I probably cooked too long and I only ate a couple of pieces because server warned me I should use scissors to cut chicken to make sure it gets cooked enough inside, and, well... I got to feeling anxious about if I was undercooking or overcooking it, so I gave up. The salad was meh, and I didn't like the look of the cucumbers (they looked brownish, not fresh) so left them untouched. At first, I thought the restaurant itself looked nice... but then I noticed that the tables and floors were not the cleanest, and walking back to the restrooms, I passed a kitchen or prep area that had several puddles of water on the floor. It did not help me feel comfortable. It's a large restaurant, but there were only a few patrons inside during the height of rush hour. I should have been more observant before I sat down. Overall, I really wanted to like the place and a positive is that the Korean music videos on the TVs were very enjoyable, but unfortunately once I got to feeling "ick", I just couldn't shake that feeling. Once again, that's probably more a reflection upon me as someone who does not enjoy cooking, even at home, so please take this review with a grain of salt. Water and unsweet tea were self serve and free, they had canned Coke products (no Coke Zero) -- all the dishes were served in togo/disposable containers. Employees were extremely friendly. We ordered a variety of dishes to sample everything; shrimp katsu plate, chicken gyoza, chicken katsu, beef curry rice and tonkotsu Ramen. Prices are reasonable for Huntville - Curry or Ramen dishes are $15, Katsu plates $12, and Kids (Keiki) are $8. Portions were good and food came out quickly. Wife is half Asian and said all the food was food for the most part. She enjoyed her Ramen and my Curry. I was not a fan of the gyoza (might have been it being chicken and not pork) and felt the sear was light. Vegetables in my curry were huge, but that's a nitpick. The owner even stopped by each table to make sure everything was perfect but didn't linger too long. I started with the takoyaki, and it was one of the best I've ever had. Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and the octopus was tender. The sauce and bonito flakes were just the right amount. For my entree, I ordered the curry chicken katsu lunch special, which comes with a soup or salad. I chose the miso soup since it was cold out and it was absolutely the right choice. The noodles were bouncy, chewy, and the perfect compliment to the pork bone soup, which was salty and smooth. To be honest, I usually have very low expectations of "hotel restaurants," but I will say Banana Leaves exceeded those. If I were staying at a hotel and this was my option for dining, I wouldn't be mad. However, I also don't think this would be my first choice for an Asian-influenced dining experience. They have dishes from a lot of different Asian countries on the menu, though I'd say it leans most heavily Thai or Malaysian, with room for Japanese sushi. The menu isn't overwhelmingly large but it is quite varied. It was fairly quiet when I visited in the middle of the day on March 4. A few other diners trickled in while I ate. Service was suuuuper sweet. Kind, respectful, and diligent. I did go a little while between finishing my meal and getting a check, but I think she was trying to be respectful of me finishing up my food. I wasn't finishing it because I didn't really care for it, but that wasn't my waitress' fault. She even brought out a few small pieces of fruit for dessert as well as a box for my meal. Very thoughtful. I decided to order one of their lunch specials as that was the most cost effective option. I selected the Thai Basil Chicken. It comes with white rice, a salad, a spring roll, and a cup of soup. I also got a Thai iced tea to drink because I can never resist those. The Thai tea was very pretty. It was not particularly sweet and had a fairly strong almost vanilla-like flavor. I do prefer mine on the sweeter side personally, but it wasn't bad. I was warned that the Thai Basil chicken would be spicy but I really didn't find it spicy at all except when I ate an actual piece of chili. Then, it was pleasantly warming but nothing crazy. The vegetables still had a nice snap but for me I thought the chicken was rubbery and I really didn't like the texture of it. I mostly ate veggies and rolled my nicely cooked white rice around in the sauce. Disappointed in the chicken. The spring roll was fine -- exactly as you'd expect. I didn't realize there was a small divot in the dish that held the sweet and sour dipping sauce until it was basically too late. Oh well. The salad was plain but I enjoyed the typical Japanese style gingery dressing. I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to see the soup was a wonton soup. That was nice and I enjoyed trying it though I ultimately found the wontons to be rather bland. Idk, 3 stars sounds a little harsh but 4 is too generous. I think that the idea is really there but just a few too things missed the mark for me on the execution level. If I were to return, I'd like to try some of their Malaysian dishes, as there aren't a ton of places around Huntsville that serves that cuisine. I appreciate the kind and polite service and calm atmosphere.
