I decided I'd give this restaurant a try a few weeks ago after seeing all the positive reviews. As others have mentioned, this restaurant is attached to a Best Western hotel. To be honest, I usually have very low expectations of "hotel restaurants," but I will say Banana Leaves exceeded those. If I were staying at a hotel and this was my option for dining, I wouldn't be mad. However, I also don't think this would be my first choice for an Asian-influenced dining experience. They have dishes from a lot of different Asian countries on the menu, though I'd say it leans most heavily Thai or Malaysian, with room for Japanese sushi. The menu isn't overwhelmingly large but it is quite varied. It was fairly quiet when I visited in the middle of the day on March 4. A few other diners trickled in while I ate. Service was suuuuper sweet. Kind, respectful, and diligent. I did go a little while between finishing my meal and getting a check, but I think she was trying to be respectful of me finishing up my food. I wasn't finishing it because I didn't really care for it, but that wasn't my waitress' fault. She even brought out a few small pieces of fruit for dessert as well as a box for my meal. Very thoughtful. I decided to order one of their lunch specials as that was the most cost effective option. I selected the Thai Basil Chicken. It comes with white rice, a salad, a spring roll, and a cup of soup. I also got a Thai iced tea to drink because I can never resist those. The Thai tea was very pretty. It was not particularly sweet and had a fairly strong almost vanilla-like flavor. I do prefer mine on the sweeter side personally, but it wasn't bad. I was warned that the Thai Basil chicken would be spicy but I really didn't find it spicy at all except when I ate an actual piece of chili. Then, it was pleasantly warming but nothing crazy. The vegetables still had a nice snap but for me I thought the chicken was rubbery and I really didn't like the texture of it. I mostly ate veggies and rolled my nicely cooked white rice around in the sauce. Disappointed in the chicken. The spring roll was fine -- exactly as you'd expect. I didn't realize there was a small divot in the dish that held the sweet and sour dipping sauce until it was basically too late. Oh well. The salad was plain but I enjoyed the typical Japanese style gingery dressing. I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to see the soup was a wonton soup. That was nice and I enjoyed trying it though I ultimately found the wontons to be rather bland. Idk, 3 stars sounds a little harsh but 4 is too generous. I think that the idea is really there but just a few too things missed the mark for me on the execution level. If I were to return, I'd like to try some of their Malaysian dishes, as there aren't a ton of places around Huntsville that serves that cuisine. We stopped by Banana Leaves on Friday before Labor Day at 11:15. The restaurant wasn't crowded most likely due to the holiday weekend. We were promptly seated and given menus and water. I told the hostess our order would be to go and she still brought out water for us. She was very nice. The inside is nicely updated from the previous tenants. We looked at the menus and ordered 2 California rolls with real crab, Singapore noodles, Thai Basil Chicken Bento Box, and eggplant and tofu. Our meals came with miso soup, egg roll and wonton soup. The hot foods were packed separately from the cold foods which we appreciated very much. Hubs and I enjoyed the California rolls with real crab meat. These were the best California rolls I have had in YEARS! Succulent tender crabmeat with large pieces of avocado made for a memorable meal. The Singapore noodles and Thai Basil Chicken were delicious. The stir fried eggplant and tofu were over the top tasty! Neither one of us complained about our foods. The meals were not too salty and neither were the soups. We give a solid 5 stars to this restaurant. If you like Asian foods, please stop by and support them. Nice patio entrance, inside is nice. Do not let the fact it's attached to a hotel deter you. We were seated quickly. Service was exceptional. Got the crab rangoons, nice crab flavor not overpowering cream cheese. Roti was soft and delicious and the sauce wonderful. Drunken noodles had such a good flavor. I noticed this restaurant tucked away near the Best Western Plus. They have a mixture of cuisine from Southeast Asia with a generous vegetarian and vegan selection (clearly marked). I was greeted pleasantly when I entered and offered a choice of seating (booth or table), and informed that today was the 3rd day that they had been open for. They have some tables outside that are presently not open for service, but plan to be in the future. Menus are already at each table and staff are willing to give you additional as well. Prices are fairly standard when compared to similar restaurants. Portions are good as well. I sampled several different items here. The Thai tea wasn't excessively sweet and had a good flavor profile. There was a large amount of ice that I wasn't fond of. I received 5 crab rangoons, which had a good layer of cream cheese and real crab meat. Most restaurants, if not all, I've been to have a sweet cream cheese layer. I liked that it was more savory than sweet, and the real crab meat also stood out. It pairs extremely well with the sauce. The chicken satay is out of this world. It's good enough to eat by itself, and pairs really well with the peanut sauce. The chicken karaage is juicy and has some crunch as well from the breading. The sauce is also a nice touch. For the main entree, I ordered a Baba Malay Curry Chicken. It had a good amount of spice for the standard customer, and suggested to staff that they have an option to increase spice level for fellow spice lovers. The curry itself was delectable, the chicken, tofu, and vegetable blend was hearty, and I could eat that all day. There was a significant portion of curry compared to rice. I would have wanted the option for brown rice, if possible. For dessert, I ordered an ice jelly. This was totally new for me. It was a gelatinous dessert garnished with mango, pineapple, and a brown sugar syrup. It was not overtly sweet, and the fruit/syrup went well with the jelly. I plan to come back here for dinner to try the sushi and some of the other items. It seems like a great date night spot. We've seen Banana Leaves open up shop for several months now, but we're always skeptical about the location tucked away in the Best Western. I'm super glad we ventured in and explored the menu. The inside was newly renovated and clean, and the staff was super friendly and attentive. Our family of 4 grabbed an early dinner here grabbing a little bit of everything off the menu. The appetizers came out fresh and hot (dumplings, gyoza and roti canai). Kids scarfed down the roti rather quickly but the small silver I had was tasty (flaky bread with a slight sweetness to it) esp with the curry dipping sauce. This will be a staple moving forward. The soups were on point and not overly salty like some places (miso and tom yum). The tom yum had a nice spice/heat to it, which i enjoy) but the wife prefers creamier tom yums. We ended up trying the sushi (few standard sashimis and a spider roll). My daughter professes that this was her favorite spider roll ever. It was standard sushi. Nothing Wow (the spider roll was good), but also nothing bad. If i was jonesing for sushi and here, i'd get it again. But some of the Tuna/yellowtaill seemed fishy. We also got the chicken katsu, some malaysian noodles and the eggplant/tofu. They were all tasty and phenomenal. The highlights for us were the eggplant/tofu and my son's katsu. so glad we've got another asian option on this side of madison. Don't be scared of the best western, Banana Leaves was a welcomed pleasant surprise for us and will be repeat customers. 5 stars overall for service, environment and food. They've only been open a few months but we finally tried Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Madison. Shrimp and corn wontons, crab rangoons, salmon avocado roll, mango tango roll, and pineapple chicken fried rice. Our definite favorites were the crab rangoons, which we LOVE mostly anywhere. These are made with real crab, not imitation. Light batter and FULL of filling. So so good. The salmon avocado roll had a great filling to rice ratio and lots of sesame seeds. Great service! I saw six cars waiting in the KFC drive thru across the street, like that food is worth waiting for. Brand new restaurant doing a soft open, grand opening happening in a week or so. Wait staff was friendly polite and attentive. Scallion pancakes are more Chinese style than Korean, which means you get 3 smaller ones not a big one cut like a pizza. The dough was very flavorful, crispy on the outside, and a really nice chewy texture on the inside. The sauce that came with it was not very good, but with a little bit of soy sauce paired perfectly. I'll be ordering these again. Thai Basil with chicken - nice size portion very flavorful a nice bit of heat, next time I'll order hotter because I like heat but my wife was able to taste it without issue. Vegetables were cooked nice, still very crispy and the sauce was flavorful without being salty. My wife ordered the vegetable sushi special which came with a salad and miso soup. Ginger carrot dressing was a bit weak and bland (but I make it at home so have my own favorite recipe). The miso soup was hearty and flavorful, I'll order a bowl for myself next time (only got a taste she devoured it). The sushi was rolled nicely, the tempura had a nice mix of textures and the avocado roll was the best. For dessert we had the coconut sago with mango, which is served cold and not too sweet but a perfect pairing to Thai food. The coconut chucks really help the sago pop and the mango adds an extra kick of sweetness. I will definitely be back, they are waiting on their liquor license but will have a full bar soon too. We tried Banana Leaves for the first time- ordered online for pickup. The restaurant itself was older, but looked clean. The service was quick and nice, so no complaints there, but the FOOD. Ugh! We ordered the Tom Kha soup, and the Tom Yum soup. Both were ok, but if you've had good Tom Kha, this was watered down and had no tangy, sweet coconut flavor. The Tom Yum, same (watered down), but with added red pepper, so a little spicier. We got the spicy crunchy shrimp roll, and it was good. The only good thing we had. We also got the Malaysian chicken satay. The chicken was good, but "bouncy", you'll see what I mean about this later. The issue here was with the sauce. The peanuts were very stale. If you have had peanut butter that's been in the cupboard way too long, you understand what I mean. For entrees, my husband got the Spicy Mango Chicken, and I got the Baba Malay Curry. They must've used a cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce, bc both were not very flavorful at all. And we asked for extra spicy. The Baba Malay Curry looked so creamy in the picture, but the sauce was translucent, and tasted super watered-down. I had to add both table salt and soy sauce to it, for it to not be so bland. The chicken had a spongy, rubbery texture on both entrees that is making me pray that we didn't get food poisoning. It was such an odd texture. The spicy mango chicken tasted only slightly better, but was also strangely lacking in flavor. The steamed rice was good. The Thai tea was good. The rest sucked, and I'm sad we wasted money on it. The pad Thai doesn't smell or taste so dissimilar to a how wet dog smells and I'm not trying to be rude, it's just exactly what it tastes like to me. And it was bland and didn't have very much meat at all and inedible. The Singapore Rice Noodle dish was good but it was missing something and seemed a little dry and bland as well.
