The most expensive drink I've ever bought was purchased here from a pretentious bartender in a pretentious yet gaudily "old" venue. Plus I didn't really like the drink, but at the encouragement of my more bar-experienced brother, I asked the bartender to tweak it more to my liking (because I didn't have the guts to ask him to take it back... though that was an encouraged option as well). This place is a classic. Stepping across it's threshold is like stepping into a past era, and not in that yucky old tired and worn out sense. I mean it's like stepping into the grand era of classic movie-stardom. Its beautiful furnishings and decor bring you back to the time of glamour, when movie-stars were venerated and not paraded around like circus freaks. It also is a beautiful oasis where you can forget about the crazy pace outside and relax for a while. The cocktails here are wonderful. They have a great repetoire of the old school classics. Sit down and have a gin fizz or martini. I suggest a dirty one. The food here is also wonderful. Look for the seasonal items and indulge. You are not going to get cheap food here, but you are going to get really really good food. Sitting on the patio is like being a movie star yourself, as you watch Rome roll and stroll by. Now, if you could just get rid of those pesky tourists...oh, wait...you just might be a tourist too. Oh well, go back to pretending for a while and order another martini. read more

I'd been to Harry's Bar once before on a 'company hosted' dinner, in 2005. At that time, it was okay, nothing special, and thank God, I never had to see the bill! We visited Harry's Bar last week on a very hot summer day. It was mid afternoon, which could have been topped off with a fine chardonnay or Pinot Grigio to make the day perfect, HOWEVER, made the WRONG choice choosing 'Harry's Bar.' The bar has an iconic history and has been visited by many famous faces over the years, which sounded in enticing, right up until we walked in the door. We were polite and nice when we asked to be seated, but rather than being greeted, the waitress just flung her hair in my face and sighed, the without words, showed us a table to sit at, and one without an umbrella over it. About 20 minutes later, she showed back up and asked for our order. It was about 3:30pm or so, hence, lunch is over and dinner is typically after 8pm in Italy, so we ordered a wine and a beer. Sounds simple, right? Especially with the severe LACK of other patrons present. Well, about 30 minutes later, I received a glass of Pinot Grigio that was not even close to chilled, and separately, a couple minutes later, my husband received his semi-cold Italian beer. The waitress appeared once again with a bowl of stale potato chips, set [slammed them] on the table and said nothing, then left. Again, we wondered, are we somehow annoying her by our presence? Should we be serving her? Does she just hate her job so much she stays for her own personal self-torture? Though the wine was so-so, we decided on a second beverage. In order to get the second beverage, my husband had to go into the main restaurant and hunt her down. She was outside somewhere having a cigarette. No problem, some people like a little tobacco break, so that was fine. Hubby told the bar tender instead, and about 20 minutes later, after her smoke-break, she returned with our wine and beer, saying NOTHING to us, not even in Italian! As if this were not bad enough, the bill, which we had to go inside and ask to have. 50EUROS!!!! For what? 2 beers, 2 wines, a waitress from hell along with being seated at the worst possible table? That was ridiculous! In order to pay the bill, since no one showed up to take the check, we went inside and paid. No 'thank you' no 'ciao!' nothing...nothing! If you are in Rome, or planning to go to Rome....Do NOT, again do NOT even consider wasting your time and money at this place. There are MANY, MANY FINE options for wine bars, cafes and such who will APPRECIATE your business at a much better price, too. NEVER AGAIN, Harry's Bar......NEVER! Not even if it were free. Service is solid, food is solid (we mostly had drinks and an appetizer plate of cheeses, meat, olives, etc.) and the service is quite kind. We had a Filipino-Italian waiter and he was very kind (we are Filipino-American ourselves and were tickled that we could speak both tagalog/ilocano to him). However, it is overpriced and the alcohol selection is a bit on the smaller side. The location was great relative to our hotel at the Rose Garden Palace and it is a stones throw away from Villa Borghese. They have live music at night sometimes. A solid place for Americans to go (we're from Cali), specifically for service and location, but it is hard to think of things that stuck out beyond what I've said above. read more

I ordered a ravioli dish which was delicious and had a unique taste. I've never had anything like it. It was a green sauce with roasted vegetables on top. I would definitely get it again. Although truly a tourist trap it was close by and we decided to go for a late dinner. It is not light on the wallet and some things are just ridiculously priced but I have to say I was happily surprised with my choices in the end. The patio is lovely and just outside of the Borghese park. The cost for 4 people was close to $200 euro. The staff was lovely, attentive and welcoming. I just left this bar for after dinner drinks. The bartender is totally diarespectful. I do not think he appriciates tourists. My first drink I had to wait before he putz around stacking (a) glass and wiping a jigger for 3 minutes. My second drink i ordered and he walked away and stood in the kitchen hallway for several minutes before i apporached the matradee about the disrespect of the bartender. When he saw i approached his manager about his bad professionallism he came rushing out and started my request. I immedialety declIined even after the matradee offerred it a free round. And I truly think they overcharged us for some things but wasn't going to make a fuss over a few bucks. However, the thing that really annoyed me was when our bill came- the waiter informed us that tips have to be left in cash. Really?! Tipping is NOT common or expected in Italy. But When somebody tells u something like what our waiter said, its like they're hinting that a tip IS expected. I didn't hear him say anything to the local italian lady sitting right next (and very close) to us when her bill was delivered, nor did she leave any cash. Overall, They should not do this. I hope somebody from Harrys reads this review and changes this habit. The word "tip" should not even be mentioned. Harry's Bar in Rome claims to evoke the la Dolce Vita flashing back to the golden age of Via Veneto in the early 1960s when VIPs and celebrities spent time in legendary clubs and lived glamorous and exclusive lifestyles. I have eaten here before and I remembered the food being good. I had the tagliatelle all' Astice e Pomodorini Della Tradizione Harry's Bar (tagliatelle with lobster and fresh cherry tomatoes.) The food and prosecco is good. Meals are well-presented and the food is fresh. However, I feel there are many, many delicious food options in Rome. I feel the prices at Harry's Bar are ridiculous for what you receive. Big price tags are fine if service, hospitality, and ambiance is incredible but at Harry's Bar, the service does not match the price tag...even with a manager standing at the door watching his staff's every move. The bread was dry and stale as if the baskets had been prepared hours earlier. The service was slow and other (Italian) customers where yelling at the waiters. I wanted to order dessert yet no one came by to ask if I wanted to order. The restaurant was not extremely busy. It was nice to eat outside on a beautiful spring evening in Rome but I found the dining experience disappointing. The clientele sent from the nearby Westin added classlessness to the restaurant. (PS...if you are an American eating out in nice restaurants in Rome don't wear flip-flops, shorts, baseball hats, and t-shirts and then ask "What are y'alls reds?" after you have been handed an extensive wine list in a wine producing country. Oooph, we needed to kill some time between the Borghese Gallery and dinner so wandered into Harry's bar for a drink. Totally cheesy and touristy, initially the people were super nice to us. It was basically empty in the restaurant, and we all ordered a drink. At 18 euro a pop the drinks arent cheap, but they were pretty good. The service, however, was not good. Basically ignored, when we finally asked for the check the waiter reminded us to tip in cash (as opposed to credit card.) WHATTTT. First of all, in Italy tipping is not customary like it is in the US. You MAY give 10% if you have great service, and we exclusively (before this experience) gave more than that on this trip. BUT never have a heard a tackier gesture, just the way he said it. Additionally, you did nothing to deserve a tip. We ordered our drinks and never heard from you again. Finally, as we walked out, one of the other waitresses started yelling at us for not tipping. Never have I ever experienced such a classless situation! I don't think I'd return here especially considering there are much much better alternatives practically right up the street.
